Congrats on 1st, Nena. Thanks for this heads up, Chips!

And Happy Birthday to my dear friend, CanadaBarb! (I shall post that on every thread, until she wakes up and joins us, the little sleepy west coaster!!!)

Well said, Nena! They look like they’re bringing an abacus into the 21st Century, to work out their weekly budgets. All the gun nuts can think of is survival. Of the lowest scale and design. Stocking up on gold nuggets, guns, and canned goods. Oh, and guns.

Haven’t the rest of us moved past “just surviving”?

Happy OSU Commencement Day!! Being the proud Buckeye that I am, I’m so excited for these graduates on their special day….especially since Gordon Gee managed to get the best speaker in the WHOLE WIDE WORLD to speak at the commencement today!! Looks like a beautiful day in Columbus…those are few and far between….PBO brings sunshine no matter where he goes:) Talked to my sister yesterday who lives just across the Olentangy River from the stadium, and reminded her that PBO was speaking there…you know what she said? She said, “I’m so excited that he’s here! We’ll be breathing the SAME AIR!!!” She loves PBO, too….
Anyway, I can’t wait to hear him speak to the graduates and inspire them to reach for their dreams and achieve all they can. One for the memories, that’s for sure. Just happy that he speaks BEFORE they call the names of all the graduates:) He’ll be home and in bed before they get done with that:)

Yes, reminds me of an old Irish story.

Back in the early part of the last century, a young Irish woman came to this country, alone, to earn a living as a chambermaid, as so many others had to do. Obviously, she was immensely homesick for family and country. At night, she would go outside, looking up at the vast sky, and think to herself, “‘Tis the same moon shining in Dublin.”

    OSU routinely has the highest number of student enrollment of any public university in the nation – highest I have known in my time is 68,000;

    OSU is also the site in the nation’s first ROTC (and cadets are always on campus) so that is why you see the uniformed military personnel. Todays’ graduating class has 130 military (vets?);

graduating class sits on the field and family, friends and others interested sit in the bleachers of The Horse Shoe (aka The Shoe).

Usually, anyone can just walk into The Shoe is they want to attend commencement but today, POTUS’ presence made OSU hand out tickets.

each student graduating is presented with the official diploma (with their names on it) during the actual commencement ceremony.

after commencement ceremony, OSU President (Prof Gordon Ghee), stays behind in the old basket ball arena and takes photos with graduates and their families until all have a chance

  26. May 5, 2013 at 12:58 pm

    Good day everyone!

PBO about to take the podium at OSU … fun introduction …

Some perspective that I think all of you will appreciate:

“For nearly four decades, generations of IDF fighters have been training in the Golan Heights to push back a Syrian attack. For 39 years, since the end of the Yom Kippur War, the Israeli-Syrian front has remained calm. Now, in the space of four months, three air-strikes around Damascus have been ascribed to Israel, and the Syrian cannons which supposedly target Israeli bases and villages in the Golan are silent.

Where are the masses of artillery, the ballistic missiles, armored divisions and commando battalions? Every foot-soldier in the Golani Brigade learns to recite the details of the Syrian order-of-forces in enemy-recognition lessons and reservists acquaint themselves with their positions for the day it comes.

Of course, the last two years of civil war has significantly degraded the Syrian Army – but to the extent that it has lost any capability of responding, even symbolically, to the Zionist enemy’s bombardment of their capital city?

So far there has been no response to the two strikes that occurred over the weekend, just as there was no response to the bombing in January. While as a precaution, an Iron Dome battery has been deployed to the north, it seems that Israel is not expecting retaliation. How else could one explain Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s sticking to his plan of spending five days this week on a working visit to China?”

Q Harwood:As you reflect on how that whole thing went down, is there anything that your side, the president, could have done more effectively? Be tougher? More schmoozing? Be more like L.B.J.?

    A. Axelrod:
I have great reverence for the legislative skills of Lyndon Johnson. But he came to office at an unusual time, as the successor to a martyred president β€” took his program and passed it. Franklin Roosevelt, who is revered as another master, took on Congress on the Supreme Court in 1938, and never passed a major piece of domestic legislation again for the rest of his presidency. So there’s a little bit of mythology that grows up around people.

I don’t think this was a matter of schmoozing, I don’t think it was a matter of toughness. I think the president was very, very vigorous on behalf of this and very connected emotionally with this.

Johnson had 68 Democrats in the Senate — not comparable to President Obama’s situation at all. Tired of the media not getting that.

      • 98 nathkatun7
        May 5, 2013 at 5:48 pm

Actually Johnson’s problem was his fellow Southern Democrats who opposed Civil Rights legislation. Most of the Southern Democrats (Dixiecrats as we called them) are todays Republicans. Johnson found strong support from sane Liberal Republicans from the North who supported Civil Rights legislation. I was happy to hear David Axelrod stress the importance of context when evaluating Presidents instead of repeating myths.

How about blaming the 4 Democratic idiots for not voting for it. I won’t mention a word about those things on the other side. But Cookie, Cokie was a Hillary supporter. Unfortunately, I’m not sure if protests will sway the Republicans in the state legislature. Hope I’m wrong though.

I wish people would just stop voting for Republicans period and then there would be no need for protesting against their anti-average people agenda.

This is not so much for the legislature as to call attention to the injustices…to organize a groundswell for change…

I always find it amazingly awesome – that is is the young in ANY country who rise to support democracy and fight injustice. The old think they know it all, the middle are too busy trying to survive in the rat race – but the young see the stark difference between right & wrong. May they never stop supporting the good against the ignorant and stupid.

now this is SEDITION….rebellion or incitement: actions or words intended to provoke or incite rebellion against government authority

Imagine if you will…if Blk Folks came to DC with loaded guns…hell…when the Blk Panther Party took up arms to defend the Blk Community….then Gov Reagan and the state legislature couldn’t pass gun control legislation fast enough!!!…

Imagine for a moment…if the Muslim community…tired of being demonized and victimized …decided to hold such a march…brandishing weapons….

      How would that go over,,,,,…

It is only because of White Privilege that they can get away with it….

and the NRA….should be declared a terrorist organization…just listening to the new head of the NRA…sedition is overt conduct, such as speech and organization, that is deemed by the legal authority to tend toward insurrection against the established order…

I suppose they are not deemed by local authority….

“It is only because of White Privilege that they can get away with it….”

        Ding ding ding ding ding!

But I hope they don’t get away with it. If they pull this stunt, they need to be arrested pronto.

taking a bow in honor of my Alma Mater – The Ohio State University! Buckeyes love their (and our) President Obama and we want the world to know how much Ohio appreciates him.

By the way, the fact that PBO donned the OSU cap at the end probably meant more to the “rabid” Buckeyes than some very important things he has done for the prosperity of the state

Yep – and every damned day I hear of some other thing our batshit crazy, evil NC legislature is doing. I went to a community organizing assembly in Durham yesterday that is typically apolitical, but even there folks are deciding that they can no longer work without fighting the horrible scum that have overtaken our state.
