evening chat – george harrison

I love the Lennon/McCartney catalog. But George Harrison was as good a songwriter as they, and proved it once he started putting out his own albums. Tonight, a tribute to Mr. Harrison.

“My Sweet Lord”

“What is Life”

“Give Me Love”

“Got My Mind Set On You”

And finally, his most well-known song: “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”.

This is your evening open thread.

Thanks LL. I loved the Beatles, together and separate. My first 45 was “I Want to .hold Your Hand”! I was very young. 😉

Is today the Run for the Roses? I should have remembered that. It’s also Audrey Hepburn’s birthday.
Audrey Hepburn (1929–1993), in a promotional still for Love in the Afternoon (1957). Hepburn made her Hollywood debut with Roman Holiday in 1953, after shooting several films in Britain. She is one of only eleven people to win an Academy, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award

“My Sweet Lord”……beautiful! Great shares, LL! It’s probably not particularly your thing but I’m taking some flack from my Fam & friends for opting out of the Cinco de Mayo celebrations this year. I’m just not that into the party. I thank you for this music.

Exactly, prettyfoot! Like you, 2014 is my number one priority. If we work hard and defeat these insane tea baggers, we will even convince the so called “blue dog” Democrats to back the President. In keeping with the marvelous idea, suggested by our Globalcitizenlinda, let’s show them that President Obama’s juice is contained in all of us citizens who support his agenda and oppose the craziness of the current GOP.

Just read a little today about the NRA convention and decided I could take no more, so largely avoiding Twitter and the usual newsie sites. These people are monsters, absolute monsters.

    • May 4, 2013 at 7:06 pm

I wrote here yesterday that on my way home from my stuttering medication management appointment I was listening to the World Service. The top story was on the NRA convention. It was so embarrassing that this was the day’s image of my country.

      • May 4, 2013 at 7:25 pm

There’s always such a focus in the international media on nuts like the NRA and Palin, their madness is box office I suppose. So, that usually leaves most outside America asking ‘how on earth did a man like Barack Obama get elected in that place?’ The saner side of America is rarely shown!

    • May 4, 2013 at 7:09 pm

Honestly, there are no words. These creeps are despicable.

I just watched the first episode of Justified and it scared me out of my wits. It’s about Kentucky RWNJ Nazi gun culture and it’s freakin’ SCARY. WTH is up with these Southern states and their hold on our Congress, stunting our growth and obsessed with this kind of knee-jerk horrific violence .

      • May 4, 2013 at 7:22 pm

It really is time-warp stuff Meta, I used to love ridiculing and lampooning them, but it’s just not funny at all, people are dying because of these ****ers’ hold on political life. The little I read today was too much, as was that ad boasting about PBO’s gun law defeat while showing him comfort a Sandy Hook mother. I ****ing hate them.

        • May 4, 2013 at 7:26 pm

I remember the very deep divisions of the Viet Nam War and the culture wars of the 70s. That was nothing compared to the extremist crazy violence happening now in the GOP. It’s so incontrovertibly SICK.

          • May 4, 2013 at 7:33 pm

Oh God, so true Meta. And we say it every day, the most shocking part really is that this ever-spiraling hate and insanity is almost completely overlooked by the MSM, so no light is being shone on it all. No examination, certainly no condemnation, nothing. So these ****ers are emboldened, as the NRA crowd have been the last couple of days – utterly comfortable openly expressing racist views and their usual deranged venom. It is endlessly depressing.

            • May 4, 2013 at 7:35 pm

              THIS x100000000000000

              • May 4, 2013 at 7:43 pm

And you know Meta, I mocked the WH press corps during the week with that photo of an all-white room at PBO’s press conference, but, of course, that’s the root of their indifference to this wave of hate – it doesn’t impact their cozy privileged lives, so they ignore it.

          • May 4, 2013 at 7:46 pm

I don’t know meta, on May 4, 1970 the National Guard opened fire at Kent State protesters. It was covered by the MSN though.

        • 86 theo67
          May 4, 2013 at 7:49 pm

I’m with you, Chips. The NRA freaks are not funny anymore – if they ever were. They’re costing lives, and they’re totally irresponsible. And now that their president is a right wing conspiracy loon… they scare the wits out of me.

          • May 4, 2013 at 7:56 pm

They scare me too Theo, especially after seeing the new guy – he makes LaPierre seem semi-rational, and that’s saying something. They really have taken over from the Tea Party as the gathering point for the nutters who cannot cope with a black man being President. Of course, they hate any one who ‘threatens’ gun law reform, regardless of their skin color, but we all know what’s truly driving them now. And this is 2013? My God.

            • 88 theo67
              May 4, 2013 at 7:58 pm

I blame the media for making Sarah Palin’s hate-mongering mainstream.

              • May 4, 2013 at 8:03 pm

And to think in 2008 just under 46% of the electorate voted to make her VP.

That’s why I laugh when such a fuss is made when PBO’s approval ratings fall – that’s 46% of the electorate who wouldn’t approve of him even he reduced unemployment to 0%, abolished taxes and found a cure for cancer. When he hits around 54%, to me that’s maximum sane approval.

                • 90 theo67
                  May 4, 2013 at 8:05 pm

Yup – when I see his approval get to 53%, I do a little dance that 100% of thinking people are behind him. It’s scary that nearly 1 in 2 people in this country are non-thinking.

        • 93 nathkatun7
          May 5, 2013 at 1:47 am

I think the answer has to do with what some people now call “white privilege.” I think the problem has also to do with the education we get. Very few Americans know that Southern whites used terror and violence to overthrow Reconstruction and restore white supremacy. But you know what, those terrorists called themselves “redeemers,”and history books treat them likewise. Many who revere Dr. Martin Luther King treat his assassination as if it were an isolated incident committed by one crazy guy. Yet King’s assassination was part of the massive terror and violence inflicted on Black people, and whites who supported them, during the Civil Rights movement. Black churches and Black homes were bombed. Innocent people, including children, were killed. Despite this history, most Americans are indoctrinated to believe that terrorism i s purely unAmerican. Only people who dark or Muslims commit acts of terror.

            May 5, 2013 at 10:19 am

            Right on Right on…Nath…

Racist Terror against blk people is very much accepted…seen as the norm actually…hence the radical racist ravings of Beck and Lambaugh can happen without impunity and if someone acts on those racist ranting…they are not held accountable..

    • May 4, 2013 at 7:12 pm

It’s like a timewarp but with bigger guns.

The NRA purposely chose a president who looks and sounds like the sheriff Rod Steiger played in “In the Heat of the Night,” which was almost 50 years ago.

They are making a statement, saying that we hold pre-Civil Rights southern values and the GOP must step in line behind us. GOP are all cowards, kowtowing to this despicable lobby.

Separately, today is the 43rd anniversary of the Kent State Shootings.

I’ve mentioned that I grew up in what’s now Duncan Hunter Jr’s district, and recall that one of my prom-princess high school classmates said the National Guard were justified in shooting those students because a few of them had thrown rocks. I thought to myself “WTH,” and but didn’t realize then what a mindset that kind of thinking represented.

Love Mr. Harrison! Here’s one of my all time fave Harrison songs! “Crackerbox Palace”

  13. May 4, 2013 at 6:59 pm

    On topic (for once).

A few weeks ago on Chris Matthews half-hour weekend NBC show (which conveniently airs at 5:30 am Sunday mornings in the Los Angeles market) had a special on the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ release of “Please Please Me,” which was their English debut single.

He asked his guests to name their favorite Beatles tune.

Katy Kay had an obvious soft spot for George, choosing “Something” and I think “Do You Wanna Know a Secret” or was it “Here Comes the Sun” (not sure, was a few weeks ago)
Joe Klein chose “A Day in the Life”
upChuck Todd chose “Helter Skelter” (he also said he was a music major and liked complex songs, hence his admiration for Queen; he played the French Horn).

Helter Skelter as fav Beatles tune? WIth so many amazing songs to choose from? I think my fav is “Norwegian Wood.”

I remember very clearly going to see the film, Concert for Bangladesh and being absolutely moved by the cause and the performances of George Harrison, Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan, Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr, Leon Russell, Billy Preston and Eric Clapton. I played the album incessantly for weeks. It was a very clear marker of this kind of event.

The Woman who was the 1st Black member of Parliament in the Dutch Gov’t in the early 2000s. I believe they have one child now. Yes, I am gossiping, please excuse me……But it irks me when this educated Illiterate, Niall Ferguson who got married at 23 and was married until 2011, when he left his wife for this Ayaan Hirsi Ali woman. So when did he become an expert on child rearing? This is 2013. This guy is 49 yrs old Not Anita Bryant for crying out loud.

Now would Tina Brown fire her fellow countryman as she rightfully did Howard Kurtz or would she chicken out? Niall Ferguson has written a few bat poop articles and had lied in 2012 about pres Obama. What would Harvard do? Hmm?

The fact that she is an African and a former muslim works to shield her husband from charges of racism and religious intolerance. But then again, on the issue of race, I was taught in school that Ethiopians, like the ancient Egyptians, were actually black whites (Hamites/Semites) and not Black (Negro) Africans.

    End of the Line

Well it’s all right, riding around in the breeze
Well it’s all right, if you live the life you please
Well it’s all right, doing the best you can
Well it’s all right, as long as you lend a hand

You can sit around and wait for the phone to ring
Waiting for someone to tell you everything
Sit around and wonder what tomorrow will bring
    Maybe a diamond ring

Well it’s all right, even if they say you’re wrong
Well it’s all right, sometimes you gotta be strong
Well it’s all right, as long as you got somewhere to lay
Well it’s all right, everyday is judgement day

Maybe somewhere down the road aways
You’ll think of me, and wonder where I am these days
Maybe somewhere down the road when somebody plays
    Purple haze

Well it’s all right, even when push comes to shove
Well it’s all right, if you got someone to love
Well it’s all right, everything’ll work out fine
Well it’s all right, were going to the end of the line

Don’t have to be ashamed of the car I drive
I’m just glad to be here, happy to be alive
It don’t matter if you’re by my side
    I’m satisfied

Well it’s all right, even if you’re old and grey
Well it’s all right, you still got something to say
Well it’s all right, remember to live and let live
Well it’s all right, the best you can do is forgive

Well it’s all right, riding around in the breeze
Well it’s all right, if you live the life you please

Hello TOD – thank you all blog “tyrants” for bringing the President’s trip to us in such wonderful detail. I don’t say this often enough – always rushing from one event or project to another – Chips and all of you, thank you. If it weren’t for this blog, I would not have such excellent information.
I have a request tonight. If you have not done so already, would you please sign the petition re: gun violence. There are signs that some of the Republicans may have second thoughts because of the negative fallout resulting from their “No” votes. As the President said, that was just the first round. We need to constantly remind the Congress that we expect action on gun safety legislation.

I promptly signed this! As I keep reminding people, it took 70 years to overturn a U.S. Supreme Court decision that had legally sanctioned racial segregation. Then it took another 10 years before Congress caught up with the Supreme Court’s decision to outlaw legal segregation throughout the country. Most of the fundamental social and political changes that have taken place in America have not come about as a result of Instant/dramatic changes. Rather, they’ve come about as a result of dedicated struggles that always dusted themselves off whenever they encountered set-backs/defeats.

George Harrison (1943–2001) was an English musician, singer, and songwriter who achieved international fame as the lead guitarist of the Beatles. By 1965 Harrison had begun to lead the other Beatles into folk rock through his interest in the Byrds and Bob Dylan, and towards Indian classical music through his use of the sitar on “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)”. He developed an interest in the Hare Krishna movement and became an admirer of Indian culture and mysticism, introducing them to the other Beatles and their Western audience. Following the band’s break-up in 1970, Harrison released several best-selling singles and albums as a solo performer, and in 1988 co-founded the platinum-selling supergroup the Traveling Wilburys. A prolific recording artist, he was featured as a guest guitarist on tracks by Badfinger, Ronnie Wood and Billy Preston, and collaborated on songs and music with Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton and Tom Petty, among others. He also organized the 1971 Concert for Bangladesh with Ravi Shankar, a precursor to later benefit concerts such as Live Aid. Harrison was also a music and film producer, founding Dark Horse Records in 1974 and co-founding HandMade Films in 1978. (Full article…)

Thank you LL. George Harrison has been my love since I was a child; still remember crying into my soup in 3rd grade when I heard on the news that he had married Patti Boyd, I was so sure he would wait for me! He was such a talent and an inspiration to so many. So nice for you to highlight him. Give me love, give me light, give me peace on earth. Yay George!
