Barack Obama and a Changing America….The David Axelrod interview

David Axelrod, the man who led both of Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns, joined journalist John Harwood on stage Wednesday evening, May 1 for the College’s Harwood Colloquy on National Affairs.

David Axelrod, the man most responsible for shaping the message that twice helped propel Barack Obama into the White House, will be the featured speaker at Washington College’s Harwood Colloquy on National Affairs on May 1. The 5:30 p.m. event at the Decker Theatre is free and open to the public.

Axelrod, who served as chief political strategist for both of President Obama’s campaigns and was a senior advisor during his first term, will talk with the evening’s host John Harwood, political writer for the New York Times and chief Washington Correspondent for CNBC. The subject will be “Upside Down: Barack Obama and a Changing America.”

Now a political analyst for NBC, Axelrod is the inaugural director of the new University of Chicago Institute of Politics, a nonpartisan center where students can explore careers in public service and politics, as well as engage in ongoing discussions of political life and current events with experts in the field.

The seeds of Axelrod’s career in politics were sown early. At seven years old he witnessed a speech by President John F. Kennedy that sparked a lifelong passion toward progressive idealism. Decades later that ideology would inspire powerful common ground with the young senator from Illinois who would become the nation’s first African-American president. Axelrod majored in political science at the University of Chicago, and after graduation he worked for the Chicago Tribune, becoming the youngest political writer in the newspaper’s history. He made the leap to politics in 1984 when he left the paper to become communications manager and later campaign manager for U.S. Senator Paul Simon.

Axelrod would go on to create successful campaigns for candidates including Chicago Mayor Harold Washington and Bill and Hillary Clinton, but it is his work with Barack Obama for which he is best known. Obama’s idealism and lofty hope spoke deeply to Axelrod; he told the Washington Post he thought “that if I could help Barack Obama get to Washington, then I would have accomplished something great in my life.”

Axelrod developed Obama’s media strategy that focused on reaching minorities and overlooked constituencies and on harnessing the rapidly growing social media and Internet. The 2008 campaign, which the Washington Post called “nearly flawless,” raised millions of dollars in small donations from hundreds of thousands of people under the age of 30.

      Congrats on 1st Carol 🙂

      LP – great thread!!!

Thanks Bob. It is a grat thread.

Thanks Bobfr, been holding this one in the holster…..figured why not pull it out!

        • May 4, 2013 at 10:51 pm

So important for everyone to study all that David Axelrod accomplished and the lasting (as in decades) effects it will have. OFA is an increasingly powerful, grassroots organization that is just what we need to counter the Kochs, etc.

          • May 4, 2013 at 10:58 pm

Completely agree Bobfr…I figured it being the weekend, people would have time to view the interview, or at least bookmark it. I know several TOD’er enjoy these as well…

Great post Bob. I do make an attempt to tweet about the GOP obstruction and Media co-signing on in this obstruction, at least 3-4 times a week. I will continue.

Bob, I am so thankful for your absolute commitment to pushing society too maximizes its full potential. In spite of all the GOP/RW/Teabagg’r-Talibun obstruction, PBO & you keep moving forward without showing your disgust. My hat off to both of you. Thank you.

Please understand, I do not suffer fools lightly and I do not ascribe the label of fool haphazardly. I’ve come to realize that for me, the best antidote for an idiot and a fool is shame.

I must do my very best to shame the Repub/idiots/Fool/Teabagger, back into that rat infested, putrefied sewer, in which they crawl from.

One must be absolutely committed to shaming these mofo’s. Otherwise, if you are not committed, “say nothing at all”, do not engage in a conversation with these mofo’s, just walk-away.

We should all express our gratitude to the President. You know he’s facing, perhaps, the single biggest issue of his Presidency, now. The implications of a major attack by Israel on Iran are vast, as you all know.

How can I put this on my FB page?

      • May 5, 2013 at 1:03 pm

Copy it or save it and then upload to your FB page. Then in comments section choose photos, choose existing and it should be there. Then click on it and download and post. Good luck. If that doesn’t work I could be your FB friend and I’d share it with you. Do you have twitter? I could DM my account. I think it is just Carol. But I have to look.

Another break from impending war news: tonight’s menu.

90% lean angus burgers, marinated in Worcestshire sauce, grilled over hickory wood, with mild cheddar cheese melted on top.
French fries, baked (cuts down on cholesterol), seasoned with Lawry’s seasoned salt.
    And all the usual condiments.

Wow, uk ok how’s about I bought the new Samsung Galaxy 4, not realizing it was released like 8 DAYS AGO!!! I didn’t even realize it until I just tried to get a otter case for the new phone at best buy. They don’t even have many case choices yet…lol. My cuz says I’m always getting the newest & latest gadgets…this time I didn’t even do it on purpose…lol

I just figured hey, I was looking at the Galaxy S3 and I saw the S4 and I figured hey, that’s gotta be better than 3 right? I did wonder why it had like one review, but I figured, it was kinda new. Welp, I didn’t realize HOW new…lol

I have the S3, and I am still trying to work my way through it. I sent a reply from my two great-nieces to my brother. He sent me a reply to the reply to tell me that I sent it to him, and I almost cried. No, I composed myself and sent him a little humor, and he sent a laugh back to me. But say all that to say that I love mine Galaxy S3. HZ

What a brilliant plan! A lovely group called the Armed Citizens Project wants to hand out free guns in the high crime areas of Chicago and 14 other cities. Super great! Everyone gets a gun! You get a gun! You get a gun! Everyone gets a gun! What could possibly go wrong??? Pure genius! They announced this at that friendly little gathering of gun goofballs, those lowlife idiots who love guns more than anything or anyone, the NRA convention. They have already begun their handouts in Houston. They think Chicago would be the perfect place for more funerals.

Good Saturday evening. TOD family. Love David Axelrod. He is a freakin genius. However, I have grown to loathe John Harwood. He has revealed his inner GOP, tea party beliefs and hatred for our President more and more. His tweets are disgusting. He’s joined in with the media hacks to try and discredit ACA and everything POTUS achieves. These vile people disgust me. They only want to pick the brains of PBO’s brilliant team so they can try and steal his strategies. But they forget the one thing they will never be able to steal and will never have and therefore will never win and that is BARACK OBAMA.

    • 101 jacquelineoboomer
      May 4, 2013 at 11:49 pm

proud – That’s the reason why – even though I desperately want to hear David Axelrod’s remarks – I cannot allow myself to watch that video with that scumbag Harwood in it. His true colors are ugly.

    • 102 hopefruit2
      May 5, 2013 at 12:00 am

Proud I couldn’t agree with you more about Harwood. This morning he was trying to pimp Sarah Palin of all people. Fortunately, folks on Twitter (not just TODers) weren’t having any of his BS and responded accordingly.

And while David Axelrod is probably making money off their desperation to steal strategies from PBO’s campaign, both Axelrod AND we know that no amount of “strategy” with a fundamentally flawed candidate is going to make a difference.

        May 5, 2013 at 12:27 am

I listened to the interview and Ax was brilliant. Harwood asked all the usual GOP-talking point questions and Ax refuted them brilliantly. I saw Harwood’s stupid tweet about Palin. What a crock these media idiots still trying to push that incompetent, vile, ignorant woman. They look like utter fools and more and more people on Twitter recognize it and are calling them out on the nonsense. You said it, Jackie, when you said Harwood’s true colors are ugly. He even tried to downplay the good jobs report. He is so disgusting with his hatred.

Bob…this is what I posted on the last thread in regard to your Tweet about Syrians biggest debate ever…@152 on last thread….curious to know your thoughts

Been here just reading about all this that you’ve posted…trying to wrap my head around this. But this IS a good question! What if they DO cheer the destruction of a madman’s weapons that were used against them? How does this play for Syria/Israeli relations with the Syrian people that have been murdered under Assad’s regime? Will Israel’s actions be welcomed? How does this change, for better or worse, the alliances and alliegences in the ME? Oh, lord….I need a drink.

      • May 5, 2013 at 12:26 am

df, I think any sensible Syrian, and the fella posting that rather humorous tweet is both Syrian and sensible, realize that Assad must go and that Iran and Russia have been enabling him to kill huge numbers of Syrians.

I have no illusion about warm and fuzzy relations between whatever form of society Syria becomes, post Assad.

Would also note that nothing that has happened in the past several hours or days has any chance of being uncoordinated – by the US, Israel and our allies in the region, including Turkey and NATO.

Assad crossed a line he was told not to cross – chemical weapons against his own people. But, way more importantly, he and the Iranian mullahs were stock piling weapons whose only real purpose was to attack Israel, massively, from Syria and Lebanon (Hezbollah haven).

That was stupid and Iran paid a very big price – human lives and assets, tonight.

They want to stay stupid, they’re going to regret it – and not a single US troop will have anything to do with collecting the tab.

#TrustBarack – He’s just getting comfortable in the CIC job 😉
