Bloomberg: Employment picked up more than forecast in April and the jobless rate unexpectedly declined to a four-year low of 7.5 percent, showing the early stages of government budget cuts failed to destabilize the U.S. labor market.
Payrolls expanded by 165,000 workers last month following a revised 138,000 increase in March that was larger than first estimated, Labor Department figures showed today in Washington. The median forecast of 90 economists surveyed by Bloomberg projected a 140,000 gain. Revisions to the prior two months’ reports added a total of 114,000 jobs to the employment count in February and March.

Steve Benen: After the discouraging jobs report a month ago, many were eager to see the latest report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics this morning to see whether the jobs market would bounce back or continue to deteriorate.
For now, it looks like the former. The U.S. economy added 165,000 jobs in April, more than expected, and overall unemployment rate dropped to 7.5%, its lowest point in four-and-a-half years. As is usually the case, there was a gap between the two major sectors – America’s private sector added 176,000 jobs last month, while spending cuts caused the public sector lose 11,000 jobs.
…. February was revised up from 268,000 jobs to 332,000, making it the single best month for job creation since 2005 (excluding temporary Census hiring). March was also revised up, from 88,000 to 138,000. In other words, as of this morning’s report, the previous two months added an additional 114,000 jobs we didn’t previously know about.

Jonathan Capehart: …. In his 2012 book “The New New Deal,” Michael Grunwald writes that Vice President Biden told him that during the transition, “seven different Republican Senators” told him that “McConnell had demanded unified resistance.” Biden said, “The way it was characterized to me was: ‘For the next two years, we can’t let you succeed in anything. That’s our ticket to coming back.’ ”
That was after Obama and Biden were elected in 2008 but before they were inaugurated in 2009. Grunwald’s revelation was on top of what we learned in Robert Drapers’s 2012 book “Do Not Ask What Good We Do: Inside the U.S. House of Representatives.” During a four-hour dinner the night before Obama’s first swearing-in, the Republican leadership met to plot their multi-year recalcitrance.
So, if folks are going to talk about Obama’s “inability to lead” they need to be fully mindful of just how responsible the Republican Party is for it.

A visit by Mrs Obama and her daughters, which would mark a first visit to Ireland for the girls, is being organised, though the trip has yet to be officially confirmed. A spokeswoman for the first lady’s office had no comment to make.

MooooOOOOoooooorning!
GM folks. GM Chips.
Congrats Amk!
Morning Amk, moooooorning everyone
Good Morning Chips & TOD!!
Morning Allison, Betsy, FayPax and any other early risers!
Hey Chips. GM
Morning all!
Good morning! Wow, lots to read later — thank you! — but off to work now. Hope everyone has a wonderful Friday.
Thanks ut – good news to greet us this morning 🙂
Morning all. Congrats AMK. Leaning on the door again I see.
The job news has some good and bad to it.
The good is obvious, increased growth, reduction in UE rate. What could possibly be bad, other then the loss of jobs in the public sector?
My concern is that the GOP will use this to work to keep the sequester going. We will once again har all about how PBO said that the economy was going to collapse and see it hasn’t.
The reality that the growth may well have been higher without the sequester and that it will take a few months to see the whole impact will be overlooked, specially by the media.
Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t hoping for a bad jobs report. Just be prepared for what I am confident we are going to hear.
Thanks japa – was just about to post your tweet. Yet it’s important to be mindful of how the MSM & GOP will try to spin this. So we need to be vigilant as usual. But I’m going to enjoy the good economic news for today. We will push back on MSM/GOP as necessary 🙂 🙂
You could be right but that sequester squeeze is going to hit home in red districts more and more particularly the defense cuts. The GOP claimed victory but more than a few of them squawked only a week or two after the sequester went thru. They have got a tiger by the tail and something tells me sooner or later a lot of them, given the warring factions in the House, will want to let go.
It will hit defense the hardest but also going to hit government agencies like the NIH which funds grants in top research universities. These tend to be in Blue or purple states.
And of course, the problem with this is that as research slows down, development of new drugs slows down, and other very important things. This is something that nobody actually can see happening but it will make a big difference down the road.
Thank you. Both of you are exactly right about the effect it will have across the board. I just think eventually a handful of Republicans will decide enough is enough.
Good Morning Chips and all my fellow TOD’ers.
Morning Mellesia!!!
Michelle did promise to take the girls to Money gall. Good for them.
I hope FLOTUS and the girls go and have a wonderful time. I think the people over there will enjoy seeing the girls and they will be treated like royalty.
Good West Coast morning Chipsticks! Fridays Good and I’m off Jury Duty!!!
Morning GGail!! Best of luck today!
G’morning Chips, TOD, lurkers, everyone, and congratulations to amk & Allison for first place tie! Happy Friday 🙂
Mark Knoller is awfully quiet – hasn’t posted since last night. Betcha if the economic news were bad he would be out there excitedly tweeting about those terrible numbers. He must be parsing through the figures to see whether he can glean any info that could be possibly spun as “bad news for Obama,” while waiting for the RNC memo on how to proceed of course.
He is too busy stuffing his face with all the goodies he can find in Mexico. I know he will soon be posting his numbers. Count Knoller will be back, he is just busy eating. The doughnut man is going to need a whole plane to come back on.
Oh, that made me laugh. Thanks.
GOOOOD Friday mooorrninnnggg,ChipStar and TODers!
Sounds like POTUS is having another very successful trip to explore and expand our relations for the greater good. Really looking forward to his address coming up. The Anthropology Museum in Mexico City is an amazing place and he will enjoy what he’ll be able to take in very much.
FORWARD.
Good Friday morning Meta, Chips and friends. Really, really nice roundup. Nice to wake up to all of the good news.
Hello, COS!! Yes, we are making so much progress but you’d never know it from listening to the whiny press corps.
According to my R husband, Bush saved our economy after 9/11. Said 9/11 was an attack on our economy and ppl have no idea how close we were to complete disaster. Didnt think to ask him at the time: Guess it was okay for Bush to do the tax cuts and also the stimulus packages he did to save the economy but not okay for PO to do the stimulus to save the economy. All ideology and hypocrisy all the time.
Morning Tnmtgirl….. 🙂 Gee whiz….if he “saved” our economy after 9/11 then how did he do that doubling the national debt? How did those Bush tax cuts, TWICE!, get paid for? What about those 2 wars that were OFF THE BOOKS, ( in other words, deceiving Americans) saving our economy? How did he “save” the economy when more than 700,000 people/month were losing their jobs? How did he NOT know about the housing collapse that was about to happen? Why did he think it was ok for corporations to ship massive amounts of jobs overseas and get paid to do it?
If this is your husband’s version of “saving”…GIRL! I hope you handle the family finances!! 🙂
I asked him those questions and typical R, he deflected/changed the subject. As I said, hypocrisy and ideology and the always rule:IOKIYAR!
I EXPLAINED the win-win of an infrastructure bill: our roads, bridges, etc. get rebuilt, people are working and have money to create DEMAND which creates more jobs, our treasury isn’t paying out U employment, food stamps and ppl have self-respect. he kept asking “Where do we get the money to do this”? I stressed long-term thinking instead of narrow-minded and short term. Forgot to use the Reagan andCheney quote of “deficits don’t matter.”
There is another reason why the government (or anyone who still has money) should do this in a recession: You pay a very competitive price for your investment, but many companies are competing to get the job.
Hiya people, just updated the post with another couple of things, and added a couple of VP Biden events to the schedule
Good Morning, Everyone 🙂
Morning Rikyrah!!! Happy Friday!
This little tweet doesn’t really hit the point I am trying to make, but within the character limit, I couldn’t find another way to say it. The point is that the GOP always talks about how much better it would be if the government was run like a business (ignoring that part that many aspects of government cannot make a profit if it tried). They also decry the fact that we run a deficit or go into debt. Yet business do both all the time.
oh, oh, obama seems to have pissed off the bj’ers again today with com sec appt.
Amk, are they ever not pissed off??
Actually, there are only a few that are really bad. Prtizker does have a poor record in terms of labior rights, etc. But she is a top notch businesswoman who knows commerce. Sometimes, the purists think that someone with no experience if a field should be given leadership of the department that oversees that area. simply because their ideology fits. If I remember correctly, that was pretty much Bush’s philosophy and we know how well that worked.
Ah true, it worked a treat in the Bush admin. Just a little tired of the meltdowns when anyone with business experience is appointed to a position by PBO, it’s getting tired now.
You beat me to it Hopefruit! Mooooooooorning!
Heads up:
10:15 AM EDT President Obama delivers remarks in Mexico City
http://www.whitehouse.gov/live
Will the MSM black him out? I know they must be pizzzzed about the good economic news.
I’d guess they’re unplugging their cameras as we speak Hopefruit, a depressing day for them with the encouraging economic news.
Yes they are VERY depressed! It’s already 10AM, and Mark Knoller still hasn’t tweeted anything about the jobs report. Just for kicks, I’m going to check his TL to see what he did last months (when the report was not as good). 🙂 🙂
You serious Hopefruit???? Nothing from him yet?? Absolutely hilarious!
Someone commented up thread on a tweet or a comment that the media will dig up bad news somewhere in the world and blame President Obama for being away and not solving or should have prevented the problem. We can’t have good news for too long with the corporate media and pundits.
So I was sitting here having a cup of coffee and a slice of pina colada poundcake with pineapple glaze (it’s still warm) 🙂 and reading all the articles and comments and I was thinking…pundits and talk shows could really have responsible dialogue and commentary if they first came to The Obama Diary. I’m just always amazed at the accumulation of such informative articles and the friendly, intelligent comments. You all make my day!
We do good, don’t we? 🙂 I think we should have our own nightly version of the news…. “America, Wake the F Up!” One another note, how about the recipe for that poundcake I shouldn’t be thinking about at 7am! 🙂
desert, you know what you do… put in some of this and a little of that…wonder what will happen if I put in a little of this pina colada smoothie? I’ll never remember what I did and I could kick myself because it is simply divine.
By the way, that news show would be an instant hit!
If I mix “this and that”….= danger in the kitchen. I’ll have to use the Google and see if anyone else has done the dirty work already:) If it ever “comes to you” just put it up here…I can’t be the ONLY one that thought that sounded delish!
Asshole.
As if Bones needed a reason to drink.
Ha, true Don! But I’d imagine he hit the bottle quite early today!
LOL!!
Well, that’s a first…he didn’t take the podium to speak about how pathetic the job report is. What’s up?
Maybe if you would actually try to pass something instead of having symbolic votes on ridiculous stuff that’s dead on arrival in the Senate then taking a two week vacation every two weeks.
Boehner really thinks people are stupid.
Yeah. “They hate us because they think we think they’re stupid. And we hate them because they’re stupid.”
Of course, we don’t have to waste our time hating them. We’ve got better things to do, and things to celebrate. They’re just losers, and Boehner’s one of the biggest.
And John Boehner policies is doing what? Please somebody answer that for me. What have he done since being speaker? Where are the jobs, jobs, jobs he promised if he became speaker of the House? I think I will send him a email and ask that very question.
It’s as if the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote cartoon has come to life with the Republican’s comical pursuit of trying to catch President Obama in some sort of trap, be it Fast and Furious, Benghazi, or the economy, and with each successful maneuver by President Obama the Republicans get more and more belligerent. What you are now witnessing is the complete unraveling of a political party; revel in it, few people in their life time are fortunate enough to witness historical events.
Hey Don, remember that show called “Queen for a Day”? Can you imagine what you would do if you were “President for a Day”? I think about it and crack up, but by the end of my fantasy I’m sad because I’m in jail. 🙂
I had a supervisor whose mother was on the show and she won queen for a day. I use to watch that show when I came home from kindergarden. Who would know that almost thirty years later I would meet one of the winners.
Six degrees of separation.
You know this bullshit really bothers me. If people like Maureen Dowd and Peggy Noonan can use media outlets like the NYT and WSJ to directly attack the President with personal (and false) diatribes, why can’t people like Ezra Klein use their platforms to inform with the TRUTH about what the GOP is doing, instead of covering for them with vague terms like “congress” and making a point with weak clauses what he tweeted below?!?!?
Spot on Hopefruit. Why not have Boehner or Cantor on and really hammer these points instead of hiding behind a tweet?
But, but but…DRONEZ!

Pierce hits another home run (par for the course (sorry for the mixed metaphors))
Maureen Dowd and Peggy Noonan are taking all their frustrations out on President Obama simply because they were dismissed by past administrations. Dowd’s problem is that she wants President Obama’s attention, if she didn’t she wouldn’t go around taking about his manhood, is short Dowd has the hots for President Obama. Mind you, none of my assertions are backed by empirical evidence, but they are backed by my gut.
Don you aren’t the only one who feels that way. She’s so way over the top with it that you can’t help but think maybe she’d would love to be where Michelle is.
I feel the same way Don. Dowd is acting like a woman scorned where the President refused to “tap dat” and home girl just can’t get over the rejection.

The change, introduced on 1 May, means google.ps now displays “Palestine” in Arabic and English under Google’s logo.
…
In a statement given to the BBC on Friday, Google spokesman Nathan Tyler said: “We’re changing the name ‘Palestinian Territories’ to ‘Palestine’ across our products. We consult a number of sources and authorities when naming countries.
“In this case, we are following the lead of the UN, Icann [the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers], ISO [International Organisation for Standardisation] and other international organisations.”

I bet most of those floor traders would campaign for him. They are going to cry rivers on PBO’s last day in office.

Morning everyone. Great roundup. Look forward to pics of PBO on the road. It boggles the mind to imagine what PBO could have accomplished with cooperation rather than obstruction. Look what he has done in spite of it. Wow!
You know how the media decided to stop using the term “illegal immigrant”? Don’t you get the impression they also agreed not to refer to the President by his title, but instead refer to him as Mr. Obama? Is it me?
Nope, it’s not you, I’ve noticed it also, they have so much disdain for President Obama.
small people, small minds.
In some cases, “Mr.” Obama (or – shudders – Mr. Bush or any of the others) is appropriate to use, as is using just his surname “Obama” after first reference (fully spelling out President Barack Obama) in all writings guided by the Associated Press Stylebook (which the media follow). This has always been the case under the AP Stylebook, not just since 2009.
The only reason any of this is constantly noticed by us since President Obama took office is that we all have a vested self interest in how he is treated because he is one of us, our family member, no matter what family we come from. And because he is so disdainfully treated in all ways by those in our country who hate him because of who he is and what he stands for, are jealous of him because he’s always 10 steps ahead and has an actual thinking brain, or – as in the case of Maureen Dowd and the like – can’t figure out a way to get his attention. He’s just not into you, MoDo and the others. And neither are we.
Good point. Sometimes we are hyper sensitive to the way we perceive PBO as being treated. In some case, like this one, it is normal and has been also used for his predecessors. Of course, in most cases, are reactions are fully justified.
Yes. Truth be told, pretty much I’m feelin’ in all cases, our reactions are fully justified, no matter what I wrote, although we have plenty of targets other than names they call our President. And we must keep on it; I’m not discouraging that, in any way.
I know also that we aren’t reacting to just how he is being addressed at any given point, of course, but more how he is so very disrespected, in general, every damn day of the week (for the varying reasons that are so damn obvious).
Thanks Jacguelineoboomer! I thought I remembered references to Mr. Bush, but wasn’t sure.
Well, that’s understandable because I’m sure we’re all trying to maybe forget any references to Bush, yes? (Eek.)
NYT started it during the 2012 election – it was “unfair” to Mr Romney that the reporting should identify the President by his title. So no wonder the news is going broke when this is what they spend their time working on.

Ireland will come unglued to realize that the President and FLOTUS loved Ireland enough to want to bring the children here to see Moneygall and some of the country themselves. I am thrilled.
Wonderful!
They really do love Ireland. I think they were clearly overwhelmed and joyous at the reception they received on their last trip. As they should be because the Irish showed them so much love and appreciation!! And POTUS must be dying to show his daughters all about his (and their) ancestry.

Thanks for this vid CarolMae.
Unfortunately this information won’t be in any single book or part of history classes in public education. Especially in the South and more specifically in Texas.
Thanks. I wasn’t sure if I should post it, but it didn’t seem to sugarcoat anything. Thanks for the input. I think we should tweet it it to all MSM on twitter. What do you think. They are all trying to dehumanized PBO, to justify their reporting.
Go for it. I doubt it will change any hearts or minds though.
Let’s keep pounding this message
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, President Obama is a different type of cat. Bill and Hillary need politics; they need it as almost as much as they need air. The Republicans want President Obama to need politics as much as they do; they want him to do almost anything just to get his agenda done. They aren’t really happy at obstructing President Obama, they are unhappy because he is losing interest in them, and that is the “aloofness” that they are talking about.
Soooo very well said Don!!!!!
Well said, as usual, Don.

Woke up this morning to the good economic news broadcast by NPR. They qualified it with the sequester would start affecting the numbers bringing them down this summer. Lately I have felt that NPR seems right of center rather than the old time center giving each side of issues. I was glad to hear their article on ACA requirements kicking in this fall with the GOP counting on this required phase giving them the same outcome it did in the 2010 election. They also mentioned a glitch in the written in part of Congress and staff needing to apply for the same insurance benefits as everyone else. Apparently there was an oversight when written and the government would not pick up that same portion they currently do which would affect the low pay workers and set off protests. The GOP is counting on the outrage and there are behind the scene efforts to try to change this. I was very involved with getting ACA in and hated hearing the Republican plans. Apparently there are pro ACA National plans to explain what is involved in the fall. However there are plans by the GOP much like 2009/2010 to squash healthcare. Somehow I know we need to get involved again in figuring out how to support the healthcare fight.
Today this site is like a smorgesborg with all my favorite dishes. Great articles!
