MarketWatch: In another sign of an improving deficit picture, the Treasury on Monday said it expects to pay off debt in the current quarter for the first time in six years.

In a statement, Treasury said it now expects to pay off $35 billion of debt in the April-to-June quarter, compared to an earlier projection, given in February, that it would have to borrow $103 billion.

This will be the first quarter that Treasury has paid off debt since April-to-June period 2007.

Joe Klein (Time): A few weeks ago, I gave the President a tough time about the slow and messy implementation of his health care plan. But there’s been some progress in recent weeks – and I’m happy to pass it on.

One of the things that concerned me was the 21-page application form that was required for people to join a health care exchange …. On Tuesday morning the Administration will announce a spiffy, new three-page application for individuals. There will be a seven-page application for families (11 including the appendix), but even that one will be far better designed than the initial effort. “We did a lot of work testing words, to come up with simpler language,” an Administration official told me, “and we did time tests. Our average was seven minutes to fill out the paper version and even less if you do it online.”

Journal Star: President Barack Obama met Monday with Jack Hoffman – the 7-year-old brain cancer patient who became a national phenomenon after running for a 69-yard touchdown in the Husker spring game this month.

…. Jack met with Obama in the Oval Office, where the president asked him to introduce his family, told him he had seen him on ESPN and was following his story, and gave him a football with the presidential seal and his autograph.

…. “It was a great visit,” said Andy Hoffman, Jack’s dad. Obama shared some of his broader visions for pediatric brain cancer research, and the visit helped further that cause, he said. “This is huge for the disease, it has never had this kind of spotlight, and that’s what excites us.”

…… Obama greeted the 7-year-old with “Hey, what’s up, Jack?” “It was unbelievable,” Andy Hoffman said. “You’re standing there talking to the president of the United States.”

Washington Post: FBI agents are conducting interviews about the relationship between Virginia Gov. Robert F. McDonnell, his wife, Maureen, and a major campaign donor who paid for the food at the wedding of the governor’s daughter, according to four people familiar with the questioning.

The agents have been asking associates of the McDonnells about gifts provided to the family by Star Scientific chief executive Jonnie R. Williams Sr. and actions the Republican governor and his wife have taken that may have boosted the company, the people said.

Daily Beast: For the first time, black turnout exceeded white turnout in 2012. Meanwhile, Republicans continue to alienate black voters. Michael Tomasky on the GOP’s self-destructive behavior.

Did black turnout exceed white turnout for the first time in history, as the Associated Press reported over the weekend, simply because a black guy was on the ballot? Look, there’s no denying Barack Obama’s presence at the top of the ticket made a substantial difference. But Obama wasn’t the only factor driving this, and I invite conservatives to deceive themselves into thinking that this is the case. Because for all this talk about a “new” GOP out to steal minorities’ hearts, the (usually white) people doing the talking seem to forget that today’s Republican Party is doing more to stop black people from voting than George Wallace ever did.

    Good Morning TODer’s!

Keeping GoBrooklyn in my thoughts and prayers and that her surgery today has the results hoped for.

Also sending positive thoughts to all TODer’s who are going through challenges – directly or indirectly, expressed or unvoiced, visible or hidden – that you may persevere and come out stronger.

The U.S. Treasury Department may have more time than economists previously estimated before the government’s debt limit is reached as changes in tax policy and an economic rebound boost federal revenue. The date the nation hits the ceiling on borrowing could be pushed back as far as mid-September to Sept. 30 from a previous estimate of late August to mid-September, Steve Bell, senior director of economic policy at the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington, said in an interview. A later deadline would give Congress more time to debate lifting the cap and postpone any vote until after the August recess. President Barack Obama in February … (more)

The Obama administration will unveil a more simplified application for those seeking insurance under the president’s landmark healthcare reform law, after criticisms the initial forms were too complex.
Reports said the new form, which will be previewed on Tuesday, would be three-pages long for individuals and seven pages for families, according to reports.

Well, today is my birthday, one I think I share with some others here, so happy birthday to all who entered this world on April 30. It’s a dreary, cloudy day, but I’m put some sunshine into it by thinking positive thoughts about GoBrooklyn and everybody else who’s hurting today. It’s good news about postponing the debt ceiling issue–monthly phony fiscal crises get very tedious. Hopefully Republicans can save their huffing and puffing for another day.

Lately, I am finding myself basically ignoring major networks and am depending on TOD to keep me abreast of what’s going on — especially news that’s political in nature.

TOD blog tyrants and contributors fill an ever widening void that has been created by the self-serving agenda of the MSM. The angsts often caused by the stories CREATED by the newstainers are “gently” corrected, often with links, references, reminders, and yes, debates, that reveal truths and alternate points of view.

Posts such as the music blogs are a bonus! 😀 I’ve said before that TOD is a full-service blog. The knowledge and experiences shared by bloggers affect us in many ways…remembering things from “back in the day”, giving us an appreciation for things we might otherwise have little or no knowledge of, and maybe even generating new interests. Newbies are made to feel welcomed by the veterans. Lurkers are acknowledged, time and again finding the courage to de-lurk.

So Chipsticks, I again express my appreciation for this public service that you, the other blog tyrants, the resident twitterers, and posters provide.

Actually, Hope, I think that you’re touching the exact reasons the WH often announces the president’s press conferences at the last minute. They don’t want the republicans to “work the field”. THey don’t want the republicans and the media to create some faux controversies that would become the center of the press conference. They want the President to be able to control the message.

On deficits, declare victory and go home

    By Steve Benen

    —————————————–

Washington has been stuck in the wrong conversation for so long, the political establishment no longer even realizes the “problem” they’ve emphasized has largely been solved. Instead of yet another protracted debate over which party is offering the more responsible approach to deficit reduction, I’d suggest pausing, looking around, smelling the roses, and appreciating the painfully obvious fact that deficit reduction has already been accomplished.

Officials can declare victory and go home. There’s no need for more austerity; there’s no point in another debt-ceiling crisis; there’s no rationale for slashing public investments. While Washington wasn’t looking, the deficit was cut in half, we’re seeing the fastest deficit reduction since WWII, the Reinhart/Rogoff has been debunked, and we’ve reached the point at which the Treasury can even stop borrowing money and start paying down the debt a little.

So, for the love of all that is good in the world, can we stop talking about deficit reduction and focus on job creation?
