Eventually one of you is going to slap me upside the head with these night owl musical posts. Until then, we soldier on. Tonight we explore the art of the piano.
First up: Mozart, “Rondo alla Turca”, from Piano Sonata no. 11 in A major
Beethoven, “Bagatelle no. 25 in A minor”, otherwise known as “Für Elise”
Chopin’s most famous Nocturne—Op. 9, No. 2
Thelonius Monk, solo from “Round Midnight”
Philip Glass, “Opening” from “Glassworks”
And to end, a poem by Thom Gunn, “The Hug”
It was your birthday, we had drunk and dinedHalf of the night with our old friendWho’d showed us in the endTo a bed I reached in one drunk stride.Already I lay snug,And drowsy with the wine dozed on one side.I dozed, I slept. My sleep broke on a hug,Suddenly, from behind, In which the full lengths of our bodies pressed:Your instep to my heel,My shoulder-blades against your chest. It was not sex, but I could feelThe whole strength of your body set,Or braced, to mine,And locking me to youAs if we were still twenty-twoWhen our grand passion had not yetBecome familial. My quick sleep had deleted allOf intervening time and place.I only knewThe stay of your secure firm dry embrace.
This is your late night / early morning open thread.
Really appreciate these music threads, LL. Thank you.
#TrustBarack
Congrats on first Bobfr!
Congrats, Bobfr!
Thank you Betsy and Jacqueline!!
I hope Ms Ball learns to think a bit more analytically ….
#TrustBarack – He Can’t Close Gitmo with no place to go …
Congrats, Bob, to our twitter warrior extraordinaire.
I completely stole the idea from Crooks & Liars. At least one thing from that website can be salvaged.
😉
You and I have to kidnap amk and train his palette to appreciate California wine. I’m sure his wifey unit would appreciate the break.
Morally first!
Spiritually first!
Congrats Bob for being physically FIRST 🙂
VC-ally first! So there!
Well would ya look who it is! Hellooooooo you!!!
HellOOOoooo, back at you all!
ps: I was wondering (to myself) earlier if you guys ever got a time on GoBrooklyn’s surgery?
I don’t think we ever got a time VC, just hoping when she gets her strength back we’ll hear from her.
Okay.
We have a plethora of ‘firsts’ I see 😀 😀 😀
Lovely group this TOD community … thank you Chips for enabling and sustaining it!
And you’re one of our stars, Bob!
Hi ya Bobfr! Did you notice a handful of the firsts are ‘ally-es’? 😆
Thank you Chips!
VC – 😀 😀 😀
Oh classy
Was enjoying the Amadeus string orchestra today. Love the piano! Perfect end to the evening. Thank you LL
My pleasure!
A womp bomp ba lo bop ba lomp bam boom tooty fruity oh Rudy….
Jovie, first you reveal you’re married to Katy Perry, then you’re ‘womp bomp ba lo bop baing’ – have you been hacked?
And Charlize Theron and I are Ex spouse.
Okay. Anything else? 🙂
I was the third Astronaut on Apollo 11!
Well, I knew that – anything else?
Did someone hack Jovie’s account!? 😳😀
That Nocturne In E-flat major reminds me of my college days and I will leave it at that. 🙂 🙂
Thanks Jovie for the update.
Sure
Sorry, Jovie, didn’t know you had already posted this – that’ll teach me to read up-thread!
Good. Hope he trounces Gomez in June.
These are very, very lovely LL, you will culturize me yet! Thank you.
Will I ever make you a Chelsea supporter, though? That’s my goal.
Wow, there is such a thing as over-reacting. This kid has NEVER been in trouble before and is actually a really good student. Now she’s been expelled for basically doing what most of us did in Chemistry class back in the day. I get the idea behind “no tolerance” policies, but damn expelling this woman seems like an extreme reaction.
Teen arrested, expelled for ‘science project gone bad’
Posted to you downthread, lamh. 😉
Well hell-oooooo there, PJ, what a pleasant surprise! 😆
Hi Sweets! ((((((VC)))))) ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
This lovely haunting piece is the background to my favourite Daphne DuMaurier movie. Thanks hf2.
One of the greatest pieces of music of all time. Thank you, hf.
I was just thinking of posting that link. Thank you HF. 🙂 I bought it on iTunes so I could listen to it easier.
Any word from GoBrooklyn? I’m late to the party….
Beethoven’s 4th Piano Concerto is my thing!!! (Other than my Sammy Hagar worship….and…ok, it’s a piece of classical music I remember!)
IT ROCKS!!!
Lordy, lordy, LL, you trying to ‘punish’ me? I have this ongoing ‘battle’ at home re classical music where I’m often remarking ‘It would be nice if you played something regular people like. Not many people are into classical music.’ To which I get a scathing reply or two vis-a-vis my (and the fictitious regular people I refer to )poor musical tastes.
My musical tastes are, um, “varied”. One night I’ll do a Spandau Ballet thread; tonight, the art of the piano. Give it a chance, it’ll grow on ya. 🙂
I love it. I enjoyed Spandau too even though I’d never heard of them. But you might have to start a new thread. 😉
Varied, uh? Here’s my first of two contributions to this music-fest. No video, only audio.
https://soundcloud.com/chowemusic/mist-four-chord-challenge
This is number 2, by the same composer.
https://soundcloud.com/chowemusic/waltz-in-blue-new-years-eve-waltz-challenge
Ooooo. Did I tell you that I’m a modern classical music geek as well?
Classical, modern classical, baroque , Indian, or ….. it’s all g(r)eek to me. I just do not get it. I’ll listen to a minute or two here and there but the truth is I have no great love for any particular music that makes me want to spend hours listening, and of course I can’t play anything. I’m really not kidding in my twitter profile when I say I’m tone deaf. It’s one of the reasons I KNOW God has a sense of humour – sending me an offspring that’s reportedly (as per teachers) quite musical……and quite frustratingly literal 🙄 😀 😀
Evenin’ TOD night owls. Perfect thread to prepare dinner by out here in sunny So Cal. As always thanks LL for the musical accompaniment. Here’s one of my favorite Chopin pieces. Happy birthday to the April TOD peeps. Healing thoughts and energy to GoBrooklyn.
It’s sunny where you are?
Been overcast most of the day where I am, just over the Los Angeles county line in Ventura county.
I’m in the Silverlake/Los Feliz area near Downtown LA. It was gray this morning; figured “May Gray” was starting early. But the sun came out this afternoon and it’s lovely out now with a light breeze. I understand it’s going to get much hotter starting tomorrow into the weekend even in Ventura County, I would imagine.. 🙂
It was really nice in Ventura County – I even had the air conditioner on this morning.
I like Oxnard a lot. I had to attend a couple of offsite corporate retreats (ugh) in a former job. The fact that they were held up there at one of the hotels in Channel Islands Harbor made them bearable. Happy Birthday to ya!
Thanks Purpleshoes – I was closer to Westlake Village, actually. Lovely blue skies.
Congrats Bobfr! Evening Chips, TOD…………some domestic news items.
Good.
This my friends….Is a thing of beauty. Video should start around 3 minute mark…..enjoy.
I sent LovelyPlains a couple of tweets in response to this post.
This really is a must see video. General Ordiero was beyond pissed at the jackass son of the stoopid former congressman.
During the first 3 minutes, Hunter Jr. had the gall to lay into the General, and didn’t offer him the courtesy you would a stranger on the street. He interrupted, and then started to leave before the General could answer.
Why can’t the media note that these GOP congresscritters (like that term, applies equally to men and women) don’t possess basic manners that every person should be taught from the time they learn to speak.
Hunter Jr. obviously has the intelligence of a box of rocks.
Embarrassed to admit that I grew up in his district, but hoping that this goes viral in his CD, which is hugely dependent on the military. Hopefully a grassroots movement can be sustained to kick this unqualified jerk out of Congress in 2014.
Embarrassed to admit the asshole is a Marine; like any organization, we have our 10% — we usually keep them hidden in remote locations… 😦
You could hear Ordierno’s voice shaking with anger. The GOP should be ashamed
I am so happy that Gen. Ordierno told this jackass off. These repub clowns need to stop this crap. They give no respect at all. Shame on this clown. I am so sick of these crazy clowns. There is a book out that exposes this type of crap about these power hungry jackasses who take power, money, and anything else they can get to tear up our nation with their greed and hate and disrespect.
Thank you Gen. Ordierno!!!!!!!HZ
Arapaho415, I didn’t know you are from San Diego. Duncan Hunter Jr. is turning out to be worse than his father whom he replaced in Congress. Sadly, his Congressional district is solidly right wing, so this bs will have no impact on his re-election.
Hey lamh, saw your post in the last thread and wanted to add my 2 cents. I just got a Samsung Note on T mobile. Yesterday as a matter of fact. I love it so far! I think you would love the Galaxy if you decide to go that route. Good luck with whatever you choose!
Looks like Lawrence is going to give some folks a royal spanking as only Lawrence can do….
Is Lawrence back? If so good; really appreciate his perspective. He knows from experience not to let “the perfect be the enemy of the good.”
I tuned in last night and Alex Wagner was sitting in for him.
Alex Wagner was sitting in his chair, but more and more lately, it has not been a good fit.
Piano + Thelonious Monk? Ok, your forgiven. Here is my favorite classical pianist:
One of my heros!
Girl, he made me give up piano. When Professor Benn told me I was quite proficient, but would never be André Watts, I was heartbroken and quit. On my ‘to do’ list is to take lessons again.
You should!!! Taking up the piano again is on my 2013 resolutions list as well. I regret that I stopped playing and taking lessons earlier in life–had no discipline and my piano teacher back in the day was so dour and stern. But I’m going to start back again this year.
Really bothers me that the MSM work themselves into a pretzel to say how bad/wrong/untruthful President Obama is, and we can count on our fingers the number of times they admit that, oh yeah, the President isn’t a king, and that oh yeah, Congress (both Houses and both sides of the aisle) refuse to do the jobs the American voters pay them for.
Shameful.
see the cjr article in lp’s tweet below. calls out these lying fifth columnists.
https://twitter.com/NOBikeGirl/status/329406334745337857
I remember with a “cellphone” was just a phone…..
IT’S THAT OLD? Really? Older than Chips, even? Wow!
great read, lp. nails the truth.
Thanks Bhai (hope you know some Gujarati?)
I know hindi very well. potayto = potahto.
Thanks, Lovely Plains, for sharing this CJR article. It’s indeed a must read. I’ve always contended that this notion of the so called “bully pulpit” is mainly based on historical mythology and not on historical facts/reality. I especially cringe when people cite LBJ’s prowess in making Congress do his bidding. This is the same LBJ whose vietnam policies were so unpopular that he opted not to run for re-election. Even the great FDR continually compromised with Southern segregationists in several of his signature New Deal Programs, which he could not have passed without their support. Then, of course, there is the issue of the context under which all Presidents have operated. I don’t know who of the 43 presidents before President Obama had to deal with resentment because of his race. I wish people had read Sorensen’s biography of JFK’s presidency, entitled: “A Thousand Days.” In there, the author tells about JFK’s realization about the “limits of Presidential Power.” It’s really sad to witness the utter ignorance of U.S. history, and the nature of the U.S. political system, by the so called leading journalists and the political pundits who dominate the airwaves and editorials of the supposedly prestigious newspapers/magazines.
Sure thing Nath, I though it was very relevant. Glad you enjoyed it.
Give me Chopin – Etude Op.10 no. 3 – E major!!
You ask …
… the inestimable Murray Perahia
Thank you, Bobfr!! Beautiful. I’ve never heard it played with such a fast tempo.
Incidentally, this Etude was performed by Lang Lang at the presentation of the Nobel Peace Prize for President Obama:
http://www.nobelprize.org/mediaplayer/index.php?id=1199
Lang Lang’s performances are at approximately 32:20 (for Chopin’s Étude in E, Op. 10, No. 3) and 1:22:40 (for Liszt’s “Liebestraum”).
Watching this video will make YOUR HEART SING at the majesty presented for our POTUS!! Extraordinarily handsome and joyous!!
I love when my favorite musicians perform for President – and to see him appreciate them as he always does just lights up my heart 🙂 🙂
Just watching this again chokes me up. To see PBO so honored and appreciated – with our gorgeous FLOTUS by his side – it’s just a supreme memory.
This is absolutely beautiful. I was so full of pride for our illustrious Prez when he was awarded the Nobel Peace prize. Thank you so much for posting this; bookmarked for life!
Bookmarked for life is exactly it. What a extraordinary human being!!
Yes Indeed, Bobfr! I wonder how either FDR or LBJ would have dealt with a Congress that was beholden to right wing Republicans whose sole purpose was to ensure their failure as Presidents? I can’t recall in the 60s a news channel like FOX, or right wing talk radio, led by a person like Rush Limbaugh, that attacked President Johnson, 24-7. As a student of history, one of the main reason I love TOD and other pragmatic sites is that they are compiling data that will contradict the false data being promoted by the right wingers and their MSM media enablers.
Attention ladies!! Marissa Mayer (Big PBO supporter) is a bad ass……you have to check out their new weather app also, thing of beauty.

Morally, ethically, bankrupt
I saw that Chips sent out a similarly themed tweet on the last thread; came across a comparison pic between the caterpillar vs. the donald.
Know that Chips doesn’t like links to the Daily Mail UK (great pictures, avoid-comments-at-all-costs [think of dozens of Duncan Hunter Jr.-level geniuses]) but this picture really is better than the earlier one.
Love it! I mean: hate it (at least the guy on the right)! 🙂
Chump wishes his hair looked that natural and good.
Here was my tiny contribution to MSM pushback today:
Oh LL, I live for the piano. Can’t play it but I love it. My favorite Olympic Opening Ceremony was in Los Angeles with all the pianos.
That’s my Senator! I love Barbara Boxer!
Father, in the Name of Jesus, thank You for guarding and protecting President Obama as he heads to Mexico and Costa Rica. Let him be kindly treated and warmly welcomed. Let the ministering Angels keep him and his staff safe. Let the people of these countries see his kindness and greatness. Keep him always in the right places at the right time and let him be continually protected all the way there , during and all the way back. Amen!
“The Department of State has committed $1 million to the Journalism Security Training Hub program. The hubs will provide real-time support to journalists who receive death threats, are under surveillance, are jailed, or when they or their family members are kidnapped.”
Amen.
And speaking of workplace safety, don’t know if this has gotten traction with the general public:
“After a factory fire killed 112 garment workers in November, clothing brands and retailers continued to reject a union-sponsored proposal to improve safety throughout Bangladesh’s $20 billion garment industry.”

To find the universal elements enough;
to find the air and the water exhilarating;
to be refreshed by a morning walk
or an evening saunter…
to be thrilled by the stars at night;
to be elated over a bird’s nest
or a wildflower in spring
these are some of the rewards of the simple life.

Potting shed in Hampshire, UK
Very nice Carol 🙂
🙂
What kinda pot? 😀
Aaahhhh! Who are you? You’re scaring me. The best in the west! 😉
See! You had to go there. I was thinking about out house.
😆
Right, did you grow up with an outhouse like I did? Three sweeter. Like the Three Bears. Big, medium and small.
You musta been rich!
😆 we had land!
Piano it is LL
Ahhhhhh, mas piano! 🙂
More. You want more? Standby……:-D
Love it, love it!
I’m so impressed with these night owl musical treats. As I’m watching at early morning hours, thank you LL for such a great way to start my day also!
From Colorado Springs news station.
Why does the self-absorbed national/WHPC media ignore the stories that matter most to voters?
Distractions…
Thanks LL for the piano music. I love piano music.
A couple items from when I was busy the last few weeks……
Jackie was also a Republican.
http://www.theroot.com/multimedia/jackie-robinson-10-things-you-didnt-know
Did not know that……I know around that time, I believe a lot of GOP senators were for civil rights, it was the southern D’s that were most resistant, if my memory serves me correctly?
True. Back them most blacks were republicans. My How times change.
He was a Republican but he did end up switching his political affiliation to Democrat.
I know. I wasn’t trying to ‘bad-mouth’ the man.
The Republican party of Jackie Robinson’s time was a liberal Republican party that supported Civil Rights. Once Democrats started supporting Civil Rights, the GOP began to change. Nixon launched the Southern Strategy. Reagan completed that strategy. Former Southern segregationist Democrats, a.k.a. Dixiecrats, became Republicans.
By the way, Yardarm, have you noticed that no Republican President/ presidential candidates in recent memory honored Abraham Lincoln, or for that matter Dwight Eisenhower? Rather their heroes are Ronald Reagan and that British Imperialist Winston Churchill!
My contribution as I head off to bed.
12 year old Nicholas Allgeier performs Gershwin – Rhapsody in Blue
The boy is baaaaaad! 😀
My late Uncle, Milt Buckner
Did you get the link to the recipe?
Is it posted here or another thread?
I’ll send you a tweet.
GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks!
Are you kidding me? Wow!! My step-dad wore out his copy of your uncle’s record Rockin’ with Milt, I think it was called? Man he wailed on that Hammond.. Wow!!! He also played with Lionel Hampton at one point, right? Wow!! Girl, you definitely need to pick up the piano again!! 🙂
Really!?! Yes, he was twice in Hamp’s Band, wrote “Hamp’s Boogie”.
Several years ago, I was on a jazz cruise where just about the whole Whalum family, including Uncle Peanuts was performing (he had just releaseed his 1st solo CD at age 78. As he was my uncle’s contemporary, I asked if he knew him; turns out my Uncle was a senior at Howard when Uncle Peanuts was a frosh, later they were together in Hamp’s Orchestra — was nice hearing lots of stories from their time on the road.
I just left a message for my step-dad. He’s going to freak. 🙂 I remember the first time he played your uncle’s record for me. I was waxing on about Jimmy Smith and he was like, uh no, have a seat and let me play you this. How wonderful to have all that musical history in your family. That is really incredible, wow!! 🙂 And Kirk Whalum is family too? Dayum! 🙂
Happy, happy dood! 🙂
Gurlfren you get a bump on my badass meter! 😀
Personal note: thanks for all the birthday messages and tweets today. I had a lovely day – and I hope all my fellow Taurus brothers and sisters had lovely days this week/month, as well. 🙂

Thank you so much for remembering, VC! 🙂 I had a wonderful few days of celebration, and instead of cake, enjoyed a perfect beignet from a lovely French bistro in Beverly Hills. Really nice. You’re sweet with the age guesses – it’s 46! (how did that happen?!)
Eva Longoria is on Anderson coopers round table . She’s my third Ex-Wife.
You wish. 😆 😆
Can you give me her number? Both the missus and I think she’s hawt.

Happy May Day to all. Will be hosting the annual lunch for my staff in another five hours.
Communist.
And make sure you have plenty of good CALIFORNIA wine at the ready!
It’s a no booze party.
Then it’s not really a party, is it… ?
A lil’ booze won’t hurt now would it?
I love May Day. My high school sweetheart picked flowers from a neighbors yard and brought them to me in first period! 😉 I hung on to that guy.
Happppppyyyy Birthdaaaaay to Theo and many, many more!!!!!
Thank you, VL – there were quite a few of us with birthdays this week.
Happy, Happy Birthday, Theo!!!!!!!
Thanks, Jacq! 🙂
Happy Birthday theo!!!! 🙂
Much appreciated, Bob!
Just saw this quote on somebody’s Twitter profile – love it! Words to live by.
“This world’s existence is one night long. There’s a great lively gathering that night, but some people sleep through it.” ~ Rumi
Nothing like a good medieval Persian poet – and LL’s musical, poetic choices – to keep ya up nights!
Perfect!
I really need to learn music.
Ok, will probably have another post up in a bit. This one’s starting to get crowded.
My Contributions to the Piano Concert….The great Oscar Peterson…Georgia on my mind…
LOOOOOOVE Oscar Peterson!!!!!
smilinnnn
That’ll work prettyfoot.
glad of that…hhahaha
nite everyone…these music threads are a very nice way to soothe before bed…..
Ta-ta. See on the flip.
Incredibly talented! Oscar Paterson is one of my favorite pianists! Thanks for sharing this, prettyfoot58!
my pleasure, Nath
One more contribution and then off to the kitchen ….
#FORWARD
Interesting, I had a similar conversation with an associate, they were hair on fire about rights violations. Daughter-in-law#2’s brother lives in the catchment area, he was THANKFUL for the police presence and search!
Hard to believe that “keeping people safe,” during an area-wide crisis, violates rights (although there are sometimes mistakes made, in the chaos). I agree with your family member’s brother – I’d be very happy to have that police presence, if the suspect might be in my neighborhood. And so, I think, would the naysayers. Easy to complain, if they’re not the ones with potential explosions in the backyard.
Ron and Rand are crazy and crazy.
Apple didn’t fall far from that prickly tree!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JackieG and Theo! Wishing you both Love, Peace, and Joy!
Thanks, Alycee – lovely message.
Birthday Wishes…..Theoooooo…..
JackieG, too? Happy Birthday, JackieG !!! (Already caught Theo!)
It’s been so lovely listening to everyone’s favorite piano selections. I thought I’d share one of mine. I have it on my phone and when I need a break and actually think of it I pull this out and listen to it. Very Relaxing. I hope this works George Shearing playing “Friendly Persuasion”
wow holy mackeral that worked! Ha. K – nite you guys! 🙂
zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Getting crowded here, so new post: http://theobamadiary.com/2013/04/30/night-owl-chat-part-2-james-joyce/
Happy Birthday Theo. Hope that you enjoyed every moment of your special day.
Thanks so much LL for the beautiful music. Love my piano. Had to play many of these for my piano classes. Great memories, and a great selection, LL. (((((((( Beautiful way to end the day with our brilliant President as well. Music is such a healing for the soul. HZ
Wow! This is AWESOME!!
Thank you! 🙂
