Night owl chat: Solo piano version

Eventually one of you is going to slap me upside the head with these night owl musical posts. Until then, we soldier on. Tonight we explore the art of the piano.

First up: Mozart, “Rondo alla Turca”, from Piano Sonata no. 11 in A major

Beethoven, “Bagatelle no. 25 in A minor”, otherwise known as “Für Elise”

Chopin’s most famous Nocturne—Op. 9, No. 2

Thelonius Monk, solo from “Round Midnight”

Philip Glass, “Opening” from “Glassworks”

And to end, a poem by Thom Gunn, “The Hug”

It was your birthday, we had drunk and dined
Half of the night with our old friend
Who’d showed us in the end
To a bed I reached in one drunk stride.
      Already I lay snug,
And drowsy with the wine dozed on one side.
I dozed, I slept. My sleep broke on a hug,
Suddenly, from behind, In which the full lengths of our bodies pressed:
Your instep to my heel,
      My shoulder-blades against your chest.
It was not sex, but I could feel
The whole strength of your body set,
        Or braced, to mine,
      And locking me to you
As if we were still twenty-two
When our grand passion had not yet
      Become familial.
My quick sleep had deleted all
   Of intervening time and place.
      I only knew
The stay of your secure firm dry embrace.

This is your late night / early morning open thread.

Wow, there is such a thing as over-reacting. This kid has NEVER been in trouble before and is actually a really good student. Now she’s been expelled for basically doing what most of us did in Chemistry class back in the day. I get the idea behind “no tolerance” policies, but damn expelling this woman seems like an extreme reaction.

Lordy, lordy, LL, you trying to ‘punish’ me? I have this ongoing ‘battle’ at home re classical music where I’m often remarking ‘It would be nice if you played something regular people like. Not many people are into classical music.’ To which I get a scathing reply or two vis-a-vis my (and the fictitious regular people I refer to )poor musical tastes.

I’m in the Silverlake/Los Feliz area near Downtown LA. It was gray this morning; figured “May Gray” was starting early. But the sun came out this afternoon and it’s lovely out now with a light breeze. I understand it’s going to get much hotter starting tomorrow into the weekend even in Ventura County, I would imagine.. 🙂

This my friends….Is a thing of beauty. Video should start around 3 minute mark…..enjoy.

    • April 30, 2013 at 9:35 pm

I sent LovelyPlains a couple of tweets in response to this post.

This really is a must see video. General Ordiero was beyond pissed at the jackass son of the stoopid former congressman.

During the first 3 minutes, Hunter Jr. had the gall to lay into the General, and didn’t offer him the courtesy you would a stranger on the street. He interrupted, and then started to leave before the General could answer.

Why can’t the media note that these GOP congresscritters (like that term, applies equally to men and women) don’t possess basic manners that every person should be taught from the time they learn to speak.

Hunter Jr. obviously has the intelligence of a box of rocks.

Embarrassed to admit that I grew up in his district, but hoping that this goes viral in his CD, which is hugely dependent on the military. Hopefully a grassroots movement can be sustained to kick this unqualified jerk out of Congress in 2014.

I am so happy that Gen. Ordierno told this jackass off. These repub clowns need to stop this crap. They give no respect at all. Shame on this clown. I am so sick of these crazy clowns. There is a book out that exposes this type of crap about these power hungry jackasses who take power, money, and anything else they can get to tear up our nation with their greed and hate and disrespect.

Arapaho415, I didn’t know you are from San Diego. Duncan Hunter Jr. is turning out to be worse than his father whom he replaced in Congress. Sadly, his Congressional district is solidly right wing, so this bs will have no impact on his re-election.

You should!!! Taking up the piano again is on my 2013 resolutions list as well. I regret that I stopped playing and taking lessons earlier in life–had no discipline and my piano teacher back in the day was so dour and stern. But I’m going to start back again this year.

Really bothers me that the MSM work themselves into a pretzel to say how bad/wrong/untruthful President Obama is, and we can count on our fingers the number of times they admit that, oh yeah, the President isn’t a king, and that oh yeah, Congress (both Houses and both sides of the aisle) refuse to do the jobs the American voters pay them for.

      Shameful.

Thanks, Lovely Plains, for sharing this CJR article. It’s indeed a must read. I’ve always contended that this notion of the so called “bully pulpit” is mainly based on historical mythology and not on historical facts/reality. I especially cringe when people cite LBJ’s prowess in making Congress do his bidding. This is the same LBJ whose vietnam policies were so unpopular that he opted not to run for re-election. Even the great FDR continually compromised with Southern segregationists in several of his signature New Deal Programs, which he could not have passed without their support. Then, of course, there is the issue of the context under which all Presidents have operated. I don’t know who of the 43 presidents before President Obama had to deal with resentment because of his race. I wish people had read Sorensen’s biography of JFK’s presidency, entitled: “A Thousand Days.” In there, the author tells about JFK’s realization about the “limits of Presidential Power.” It’s really sad to witness the utter ignorance of U.S. history, and the nature of the U.S. political system, by the so called leading journalists and the political pundits who dominate the airwaves and editorials of the supposedly prestigious newspapers/magazines.

Yes Indeed, Bobfr! I wonder how either FDR or LBJ would have dealt with a Congress that was beholden to right wing Republicans whose sole purpose was to ensure their failure as Presidents? I can’t recall in the 60s a news channel like FOX, or right wing talk radio, led by a person like Rush Limbaugh, that attacked President Johnson, 24-7. As a student of history, one of the main reason I love TOD and other pragmatic sites is that they are compiling data that will contradict the false data being promoted by the right wingers and their MSM media enablers.

And speaking of workplace safety, don’t know if this has gotten traction with the general public:

Really!?! Yes, he was twice in Hamp’s Band, wrote “Hamp’s Boogie”.

Several years ago, I was on a jazz cruise where just about the whole Whalum family, including Uncle Peanuts was performing (he had just releaseed his 1st solo CD at age 78. As he was my uncle’s contemporary, I asked if he knew him; turns out my Uncle was a senior at Howard when Uncle Peanuts was a frosh, later they were together in Hamp’s Orchestra — was nice hearing lots of stories from their time on the road.

Hard to believe that “keeping people safe,” during an area-wide crisis, violates rights (although there are sometimes mistakes made, in the chaos). I agree with your family member’s brother – I’d be very happy to have that police presence, if the suspect might be in my neighborhood. And so, I think, would the naysayers. Easy to complain, if they’re not the ones with potential explosions in the backyard.
