AP: One of the architects of failed gun control legislation says he’s bringing it back.

Sen. Joe Manchin on Sunday said he would re-introduce a measure that would require criminal and mental health background checks for gun buyers at shows and online. The West Virginia Democrat says that if lawmakers read the bill, they will support it.

E.J. Dionne: The policy mystery of our time is why politicians in the United States and across much of the democratic world are so obsessed with deficits, when their primary mission ought to be bringing down high and debilitating rates of unemployment.

….. I’d add a second mystery: Why is it that conservative Republicans who freely cut taxes while backing two wars in the Bush years began preaching fire on deficits only after a Democrat entered the White House?

Here is a clue that helps unravel this whodunit: Many of the same conservatives who now say we have to cut Social Security to deal with the deficit supported Bush’s plan to privatize Social Security — even though the transition would have added $1 trillion to the deficit…..

In other words, deficits don’t really matter to many of the ideological conservatives shouting so loudly about them now. Their central goal is to hack away at government.

Steve Benen: …. the fact that President Obama may look for “excuses” not to use the U.S. military to intervene in an another Middle Eastern country is a growing point of conservative consternation, as opposed to relief. On “Fox News Sunday,” Brit Hume sounded pretty disappointed when he described Syria as “a costly military enterprise of the kind that this president now seems to loath to undertake.”

As if that were grounds for criticism.

…. John McCain, making his ninth Sunday show appearance of the year – the most of anyone in the country – …. has the misfortune of being wrong about nearly every foreign policy conflict of the last few decades …. he does not want the U.S. to invade Syria, but prefers to give “assistance” to rebels fighting the Assad regime.

Many of those same rebels, it’s worth emphasizing, have already pledged allegiance to al Qaeda, a detail McCain generally prefers to overlook when he argues we should give them resources and weapons.

Jonathan Cohn: Max Baucus thinks it might be a “train wreck.” David Brooks is predicting chaos. And Democratic senators are telling the White House they are panicked. They’re all talking about Obamacare and what happens next year, when it starts making insurance coverage available to nearly all Americans.

Believe it or not, the conversation represents progress. Instead of talking about whether we should have a health care reform law, we’re talking about how well (or not well) the law is going to work. So let me spoil the surprise for you: It’s not going to work as well as many of us would like, and the initial adjustment may not be easy. The whole enterprise is going to be a work in progress. And that’ll be ok—because it will still do a lot of good and make life better for most people, particularly with the passage of time.

TPM: New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Monday that despite the criticism he’s taken from some on the right for his embrace of President Barack Obama following Superstorm Sandy, the popular Republican wouldn’t have done anything differently.

….. Christie said that while he was a supporter of Mitt Romney — and disagrees with Obama virtually across the board — he has to tip his hat to the President’s response to Sandy.

“Listen, the President has kept every promise he’s made,” Christie said. “What I was saying at the time was, I was asked how the President was doing, I said, he’s doing a good job, he’s kept his word….”

Washington Post: A conservative backlash threatens immigration reform

The backlash has begun against immigration reform, specifically the provision that would legalize the status of 11 million undocumented immigrants and ultimately give these people a shot at citizenship. Led by conservative Republicans and whipped into a froth by right-wing radio talk-show hosts, opponents of reform are banking on derailing the measure with a strategy of delay and dismemberment.

The focus of these efforts is the House, where many Republican back-benchers remain unsold on immigration reform despite the party’s disastrous loss of the Latino vote in 2012.

More here

****

Greg Sargent: Leading Republican officials who are advocating for real immigration reform are now all in. There’s no more hedging from the likes of Marco Rubio. The sense is unmistakable that there’s no going back. And with Members of Congress on recess this week, conservative foes of reform are gearing up for their last stand.

Loved this. Thanks for sharing! I will go and see that movie, but I think I will play this interview again too – it is a hoot. This is good for me today as I could not sleep last night. I had some worried thoughts in my head and I actually made a conscious decision to stay awake as long as I could (lasted til after 4 am); so on my iPad I watched “Something’s Gotta Give” (Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson)-possibly my favorite adult comedy movie; so to see her having this much fun talking about her latest film too is wonderful!

    Good Morning Chips and TOD!

Best line from President Obama at the WHCD: “I know Republicans are still sorting out the 2012 election, but one thing they all agree on is they need to do a better job reaching out to minorities. And look, call me self-centered, but I can think of one minority they could start with. Hello?”

    This was soooo funny!!!! 😆 😆 😆

This line was perfect, donna, and I even saw Gingrich mouth to someone that it was true. Not that anyone cares what Gingrich mouths, but it shows that all the R’s are very conscious of what they’re doing. They want to destabilize the government, as Dionne says, and they want to ensure that PBO’s legacy is destroyed. Trouble is they’re too obvious about it. We all know what they’re doing and we’re not going to let them get away with it.

Chips I saw this doozy and thought of you immediately, it’s a tour de force….

The Erik Wemple Blog has been working on this blockbuster scoop for some time, and here’s how it’s shaping up:
In fall 2011, author Ron Suskind’s book “Confidence Men” alleged that the Obama White House had been an inhospitable place for women. A female Politico staffer at the time had been assigned to look into the story, yet a strange thing happened when she started reporting. “I would ask about these allegations of sexism and they [sources] would respond with some variation of ‘When are you going to do that story—the story on sexism at Politico?’ And so I went to my editor and said we don’t have a lot of cover on this story and shouldn’t pursue it too hard.”

So Chuck Todd goes on MTP and says that PBO hates social media. What a putz. I swear it infuriates me that someone like him gets to rise to the level of responsibility in that news station that he has. It’s pathetic.

Yes Chuck Todd he was making fun of YOU because the whole lot of you all are worthless, sloppy, newstainers that have put a blot on journalism as it once was.

    {Snip}
According to NBC’s White House correspondent Chuck Todd, President Obama “hates” social media and how it has contributed to the “buzzification” of political discourse.

    http://www.mediaite.com/tv/nbcs-chuck-todd-obama-hates-social-media-and-the-buzzification-of-political-discourse/

    • April 29, 2013 at 10:37 am

I guess nobody told him about that Reddit server meltdown when PBO did Q&A. Or the fact The President and his team pioneered the use of social media in his campaign. Or that he’s in like the top three when it comes to followers on Facebook and Twitter.

That’s not sloppy. That’s a flat out lie and Todd knows it.

      • 44 hopefruit2
        April 29, 2013 at 10:44 am

Exactly derbingle – I had even forgotten about Reddit. But your excellent post just reinforces my comment. When I think of social media I think of PBO and vice versa! 🙂

        • April 29, 2013 at 11:37 am

Todd was just projecting his own feelings onto the President. He doesn’t know what the hell he is talking about, if anything the President hates him and the news media editorialization of what is happening and them not holding republicans responsible but always blaming the President. Chuck Todd should go to hell

    • 46 hopefruit2
      April 29, 2013 at 10:41 am

If I may add something – it’s PBO who has made social media what it is. PBO is the one politician who has made the most efficient and extensive use of social media. Many people who support PBO BEGAN to use FB, Twitter, Tumblr, blogs, etc as a result of their support of his campaign, presidency, and desire to be updated on what he’s doing, etc. PBO is the #1 politician on FB & Tweeter, and in the top 5 (of anyone) in terms of followers.

Sounds like Chuckie is engaging in a mighty case of projection here – it’s the traditional media who hates social media because they have less control over their desired narrative. It’s not social media that PBO hates – he hates LIES & distortions from traditional media who abuse social media with the same corrupt agendas as they do traditional media.

Excellent points, hopefruit. I was never on any social media until POTUS. I let Todd have it on twitter this morning and tweeted that stupid Mediate article that quotes him so he could be mocked. Todd just lies 24/7 on POTUS. Shameful.

HF, I don’t think even Chuck Todd is so stupid he doesn’t know this, but he’s throwing out bait to catch fish and the smellier the bait the better. If anything, he’s talking to his fellow right wingers who feel threatened by the president.

He’s been spreading his ugly around for years and we still re-elected our president and we still plan to go on supporting him. Sherijr, back in the olden days of vauldeville, there was a comedian named Ish Kabibble that my mother used to love. Well hidde ho all you O’s!!!! What a great getting up day on this fine morning around TODdytown!!!! Fingers crossed, we’ve broken the back of winter finally in my neck of the woods. I’ve even taken the indoor plants outside for the next few days to get them acclimated to the great outdoors.

So it looks like the gun issue has morphed into actual polling results. Initially, it was felt that 2nd amendment rights advocates were more passionate than the gun control advocates. Senators felt safe in voting no, betting that the 2nd amenders would outvote the controllers. Well, according to the latest polls, not so. Kelly Ayotte is down 15 pts for her vote, and Toomey is up because of his lead on the issue (not that we want him re-elected). In other words, we may see some movement in the other direction, now that the poll gods have shed light on how their votes will directly effect the Senacritters.

It’s sick and demented. This despicable crap was tried in 2008 and it didn’t work and it didn’t work in 2012. You’d think they would learn from their defeat (two times) but a leopard can’t change its spots.

      • April 29, 2013 at 12:13 pm

There’s no end to their ugliness, Donna, just no end. I look through the toons every day and it’s always so striking how hate-filled and often utterly racist the RW efforts are. They truly are representative of that wing of society, so depressing.

They have to be ugly and racist, it is all they got to work with. They definitely don’t have policies.

I read afew comments in the Washington Post after I read a article about FLOTUS speech today. One comment said why was Michelle out there speaking about this, she has not been elected, or part of the cabinet, why is she the one out there speaking about this, why not the head of the V.A. Someone replied to that comment and told them just as long as someone is out there trying to help the soldiers and their families what different does it make who is out there. But I guess it makes a difference to those Obamas haters.

The comments section of these online media outlet need to be taken with the appropriate amount of salt – I think many of them are either paid GOP operatives, or GOPers who work at those media companies.

And you know I have a couple of associates (I won’t call them friends) that call themselves Blah Republicans and vote that way and when I point this stuff out they swear that both sides do it. I call BS and let them know it because 98% of the time when you see or read this stuff its from some RWNJ racist!

This is an excellent article LP! (although I disagree with the part about him being polarizing – which is more likely due to the MSM).

But I like this part 🙂

// “If we’re only focused on profits or ratings or polls,” he admonished an audience focused on profits, ratings, and polls, “then we’re contributing to the cynicism that so many people feel right now.” The last quarter of Obama’s remarks Saturday night received little coverage from media organizations because reporters tend to be biased toward conflict and the familiar–in this case the president’s traditionally humorous and self-conscious monologue (“I’m not the strapping young Muslim socialist I used to be”).

But it may stand as one of the best rhetorical moments of Obama’s presidency, a clearheaded indictment of four national institutions (the media, the entertainment industry, big business, and the political system), coupled by a prescription for revival.” //

Had POTUS not Come out for Solid LGBTQ support last May in 2012…..these shifts would still be years off. Thank You AGAIN, Pres Obama.

Chips I beg you ever so humbly – could you add LP’s article from the National Journal to the post – it’s directly related to PBO’s WHCD speech. Never mind the paid trolls in the comments section – the article itself is golden.

Report: Obama signature on FAA bill held up by spelling error
    By Keith Laing
President Obama has not been able to sign the measure passed by Congress last week to end air traffic controller furloughs because of a typo in the bill, according to a report.

ABC News is reporting that a word in the legislation is missing an ‘s,’ delaying Obama’s signature on the bill until Tuesday.

Congress hurriedly passed the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) bill last week before they left Washington for a weeklong recess as frequent airline passengers complained about delays the agency attributed to the sequester.

    -/

Congress fucking up again! They have to come back and pass another bill, meanwhile…

I cannot agree with this part of the National Journal Article .

” Elected by voters who had the audacity to hope for change and unity, Obama is instead the third-straight president known more for polarization than unification. ”

The citizens/nasty pundits create polarization, not the President’s. ( except for Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld )

I don’t know which of these McTurtle responses are better, but I am enjoying EVERY ONE. I don’t want to “go there,” but I’m thinking his back side is his real soft side, because he hasn’t been off it since being elected. Yuck.
