Jack meets the President

President Barack Obama greets Jack Hoffman, 7, of Atkinson, Neb., in the Oval Office, April 29. Hoffman, who is battling pediatric brain cancer, gained national attention after he ran for a 69-yard touchdown during a Nebraska Cornhuskers spring football game. HuskerInsider: So what does a 7-year-old pediatric brain cancer patient do after thrilling 60,000 fans at Nebraska’s Spring Football Game, plus nearly 8 million YouTube viewers, with an inspiring 69-yard touchdown run? After throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at Saturday’s nationally televised Nebraska-Michigan softball game in Lincoln, Jack flew to Washington D.C. with his dad, Andy, mom, Bri and sisters Ava 5, and Reese, 2.

On Sunday, the Hoffmans took in the sights of our Nation’s Capital in advance of a Monday noontime scheduled visit with President Barack Obama at the White House. “We were thrilled to get invited, and we hope it all comes off,” Andy Hoffman, Jack’s dad, said Sunday night.

Oh, so sweet. I love how PBO touches the lives of young children and inspires HOPE, especially for little boys like this.

Still can’t get over how absolutely funny our POTUS is. Just one of the best WHCD appearances yet. Every joke hit the mark!!

Sorry to see Ray LaHood go but Mayor Foxx looks like a very good replacement. Hope he can get through the sausage factory ASAP.

‘ Bangladeshi lawyers and protesters chanted “hang him, hang him” on Monday as the owner of a factory building that collapsed last week killing nearly 400 people was led into court dressed in a helmet and bullet-proof jacket, witnesses said.
Eight people have been arrested – four factory bosses, two engineers, building owner Mohammed Sohel Rana and his father, Abdul Khalek. Police are looking for a fifth factory boss, David Mayor, who they said was a Spanish citizen.
Khalek, who officials said was named in documents as a legal owner of the building, was arrested in Dhaka on Monday. Those being held face charges of faulty construction and causing unlawful death.’

While here in USA, we don’t even know the names of the West, TX factory owner. We could learn a thing or two from the Bangladeshis…

Yes, and the people in West, Texas, don’t even think to blame the factory owners. The acquiescence and passivity in this country is truly frightening.

That’s what happens to ‘people’ who are responsible for death and destruction. Except where corporations are ‘people’ in the United States and have all the advantages of personhood and none of the responsibilities.

Readout of President Obama’s Call with President Putin – April 29, 2013

President Obama spoke by phone today with President Putin of Russia to convey his condolences on the tragic hospital fire outside of Moscow that killed dozens last week, and to reiterate his appreciation for the close cooperation that the United States has received from Russia on the Boston marathon attack. The two Leaders discussed cooperation on counterterrorism and security issues going forward, including with respect to the 2014 Olympics in Sochi. President Obama and President Putin reviewed the situation in Syria, with President Obama underscoring concern over Syrian chemical weapons.

The Presidents agreed to stay in close consultation and instructed Secretary Kerry and Foreign Minister Lavrov to continue discussions on Syria. Finally, both Presidents noted that they look forward to meeting in person in June at the time of the G-8 meeting in Northern Ireland and again in September for a bilateral Summit in Russia. http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2013/04/29/readout-president-obama-s-call-president-putin

Okay friends, I need help. I want to see the White House GOLD in September for Childhood Cancer Month. Kids get cancer too…..not just breast cancer and everything pink in October. I have sent many emails to the WH and called many times with this request. Can any of you offer another suggestion that might work?

      • April 29, 2013 at 8:41 pm

What a great man Ray LaHood is! And Anthony Foxx – another wonderful man raised by an apparently single mom.

          April 29, 2013 at 9:19 pm

Totally agree with you Maryl1! One of the most important presidential qualities people have overlooked when assessing President Obama is disability to select high caliber people for his cabinet and other important positions in government. His selection of Vice-President Joe Biden sent the first signal that President Obama was a serious man. Certainly selecting Ray LaHood, though a Republican, was another example of the President’s ability to pick people dedicated to public service. I think his selection Mayor Foxx to replace LaHood was brilliant. Mayor Foxx has great potential to be another inspiring leader on the national scene.

          • April 29, 2013 at 9:27 pm

I like the Ray LaHood pointed out that by selecting mayors for some of these cabinet posts, President Obama is emphasizing they importance of our cities. City government is where the rubber really meets the road and some of these mayors who have been dealing effectively with the problems of cities are great resources for national policies.

O.K. something is wrong here! I distinctly wrote “his ability” but somehow that posted as “is disability” which did not make any sense at all!

        April 29, 2013 at 5:41 pm

But where is the outrage? When will the public understand the power they possess? Every Senior group in this country should be organizing to make it as uncomfortable for these Congresscritters as possible.

We changed this countries attitudes about the Vietnam War in part because of protest. We shamed this country about civil rights by way of protest. Women demanded a right to vote by way of protest. People of color stood in lines for hours to vote in 2012 as a means of protest to the voter suppression that was tried in some states. I could on and on but it just seems that today far too many still haven’t learned what is possible when millions of voices protest for change.

My mom used to visit a disabled, older woman who existed on Meals-on-Wheels. She would save her muffin for two days to see her through the days between M-on-W visits. Not to mention – it was one of the few contacts she had with another human being. I don’t know how that lady is managing. She was already in a state of depression.

If you can start the day without caffeine,

If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,

If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,

If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it,

If you can understand when your loved ones
are too busy to give you any time,

If you can take criticism and blame without resentment,

If you can conquer tension without medical help,

If you can relax without alcohol,

If you can sleep without the aid of drugs,

    Then You Are Probably

    The Family Dog!

And you thought I was going to get all spiritual …

Handle every Stressful situation like a dog.

If you can’t eat it or play with it,

Pee on it and walk away!

Not sure what this means—but interesting.

    • April 29, 2013 at 6:03 pm

Could that just be from one of the victims?

    • April 29, 2013 at 6:34 pm

And the sun rises in the east ….. that is just mind bogglingly lame. They’re countless reasons why ‘female DNA’ could be associated with a fragment. In fact, it would be hard to imagine NOT finding BOTH female DNA on bomb fragments and, even unexploded devices, again for many reasons. What only matters is to whom that DNA matches – that’s when it becomes interesting.

      • 81 dotster3
        April 29, 2013 at 6:40 pm

Just passing on the news, Bobfr. NBC reported on it too tonight, saying they took DNA sample from the wife—-but also said that the DNA could have come from female sellers of the parts.

        • April 29, 2013 at 9:24 pm

Oh, dotster, I know that’s what you are doing!! My comment is not to you, it’s to a media that is so clueless as to the nature of the vast ramifications of the ‘presence of DNA’ on anything.

          Thank you.

          • April 29, 2013 at 9:26 pm

Oh, and as to getting a DNA sample from the wife – if it matches the DNA from the fragment – she may have purchased a pressure cooker or other items, like the backpack, and had zero knowledge of what her husband was doing with the materials.

So true. And, yet, CNN and others are still going on and on about it. But – don’t worry – because we have the attention spans of gnats in this country, especially our media, tomorrow it’ll be another “news” item to talk about over and over.

      • 85 nathkatun7
        April 29, 2013 at 9:43 pm

Bob, that’s mainstream media for you. Exactly why is the “femaleDNA”, whose source is not yet identified, qualify as breaking/significant news, if your intent is not to inflame people to start imagining a conspiracy that went beyond the two brothers. Why couldn’t CBS wait for the DNA source to be analyzed and identified? How do I, as a reader/viewer/ listener , benefit from this news, except may be to start filling in the blanks by imagining all sorts of diabolical plots? The state of the current U.S. media is, frankly, quite appalling.

          April 30, 2013 at 12:19 am

Totally agree. Unlike the print media, which is practically “of days of yore” now, today’s media must fill up air 24/7 … half, unfortunately, nonsensical and often diabolical, as you intimated.

This is the second time I’ve heard Mayor Anthony Foxx speak — the first one being at the DNC Convention. I am ver impressed with him! I think he has the potential to be a great and inspiring leader. Like the President, Mayor Foxx is young, energetic and well spoken. It’s really a blessing that his grandmother was around to see her grandson become such a success because it appears that she has been such a great influence on him.
