President Obama at the WHCD 2009-12

My most loved WHCD line ever:

Wanda Sykes on Rush Limbaugh: “He just wants the country to fail. To me that’s treason. He’s not saying anything different than what Osama Bin Laden is saying. You might want to look into this, sir, because I think Rush Limbaugh was the 20th hijacker but he was just so strung out on Oxycontin he missed his flight. … Rush Limbaugh, I hope the country fails, I hope his kidneys fail, how about that?”

C-Span’s coverage of the arrivals tomorrow at the WHCD starts at 6:15 ET

Well, that was a tough week, but we had four very lovely pieces of news on the blog:

Joan Shaw returned to us, after a lengthy spell recovering from a broken hip

Dudette is baaaaaaack, after spending time in hospital with pneumonia

CollegeKay has finished college – summa cum laude, too. (I know, I also thought that was an Italian rap band – having graduated with a summa-cum-by-the-skin-of-yer-teeth – but it just means she’s scarily brainy)

And ……… Yardarm was 21 again.

So, celebrate:

    Good Evening TODers

Has there ever been a more luminous and graceful First Lady than Michelle Obama?? She’s amazing in all these pictures. I think my favorite dress is the multi-colored strapless, but it’s a close contest.

Just to add a little frivolity to the Friday night discussion!

wes207, Yes indeed we are bless with a wonderful First Lady. And my favorite dress is the red one, because I like that color on her. She looks lovely in all the outfits.

Wonderful round-up, Chipstar!! Just what the doctor ordered! I LOVE PBO at these events. He always just kills it with his straight-up target-rich snark!!

After his death in 1851, Audubon’s wife Lucy returned to teaching to support herself. One of her students, George Bird Grinnell, became the editor of Forest and Stream magazine and in 1886 organized the Audubon Society for the study and protection of birds. Today there are many branches of this organization, known as the National Audubon Society, and it remains dedicated to the conservation of wildlife and natural resources. Its members honor Audubon on his birthday, April 26. In some states, Audubon Day and Arbor Day are celebrated together by planting trees in bird sanctuaries.

Audubon tip of the day(from me)…….if your birds all of a sudden disappear from feeder, it could be a hawk after your songbirds….so….I duck taped an umbrella to my bird feeder pole to shield the birds and keep hawk from swooping down…counted 12 yellow finches at one time today…looked like a backyard full of parakeets…………..now if we could just figure out what to duck tape over the US to shield us from McCain and Graham……..

    HI EVERYONE:

I HAVE A SHORT ANNOUNCEMENT TO MAKE AND WANTED TO SHARE IT WITH SITE/PEOPLE I’M MOST ACTIVE WITH ONLINE:

i’ve been in the hospital since April 15th. Had a friend call the ER due to buckling/burning sensations in my legs. More than 10 days later and I’m still here at another branch of the same hospital. Been through one surgery to sure up my spine and will have another next week to secure other parts from buckling as well. I’ve forgotten the medical name for it but It definitely stems from an aggressive form of breast cancer that has spread – didn’t learn about it until the ER visit. Don’t have the medical term for that either because the biopsy results have not come back yet. It’s been hard, painful, frustrating and confusing but the doctors, staff, my immediate friends and family have made it more bearable for me.

I will provide updates as I can. It was physically and mentally hard to do so I’m taking the time to do it now. My spirits are up. A couple of family members hung out with me today so I’m okay to type or answer some follow up questions.

Gobrooklyn, you have another person saying a prayer for you tonight. It’s so great that you’re getting such excellent care from the sound of things. Hanging out in TODville is a wonderful prescription for what ails you. Powerful vibes are being sent your way right now. Please, don’t wear yourself out, but it’s been great to hear from you this evening. May you feel the healing power of love and grace.

You know, I’ve been thinking(dangerous) and it just blows my mind what PBO has to deal with…in the course of a week gives speech that was so emotional and gut wrenching about gun control vote loss, he makes a speech that some say was his best at a bombing memorial, the very next day addresses the nation about the capture of bombing suspect and what that entails, Oh, forgot Tx blowing up and floods in the midwest, then he has to go and play nice with Shrub and immediately thereafter speak at a memorial for firefighters while sharing the stage with Rick Perry, Ken Starr, and Coryn, fly back and probably gets no sleep b/c of chemicals being used in Syria and Congress wanting us to go to war, gets up and speaks at Planned Parenthood…………..the man needs a DAMN VACATION…….

That do nothing Congress is gone for another week. When will POTUS and his family have a vacation? Maybe go to Martha’s Vineyard for a week or two.

    • April 26, 2013 at 8:57 pm

Yes, yes he does. It showed big last week during one conversation. Let’s start a petition to send him out of DC for a few days. To hell with what anyone might say. They treat him like a slave as it is- congress (with a lower case c, if you will) vacations at will, does nothing for us, and gets paid– by us. And the hardest working man in politics can’t take a break? Give me an f’in break. He needs to chill out with his ladies, spend a bit of spiritual down time to keep his soul empowered, and above all safeguard his health. Just me being a mother hen 🙂

  15. April 26, 2013 at 8:47 pm

Happy weekend to one and all.

Several TODers mentioned Chris Hayes’ 2-part segment yesterday about how DICK CHENEY’s (aka The Dark Lord) son-in-law (!) was instrumental in ensuring that chemical plant oversight remained with Homeland Security and not be moved to the EPA (where the oversight expertise existed).

Part 2 of the report had a bonus cameo of then-Senator Barack Obama, which was icing on the cake. (I’m not sure which video is included with the link in the tweet; Adobe Flash crashes quite a bit on my Chrome Browser):

Here’s the Mar 2007 referenced in Chris Hayes’ show:
    http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2007/0703.levine.html
    Dick Cheney’s Dangerous Son-in-Law
Philip Perry and the politics of chemical security.

Also, Lawrence O’Donnell’s rewrite last night was quite cathartic, after being subjected to an entire day of worshipped at the GWBush shrine, oops, I mean “library.”

        Heavenly Father,
        it’s toward him we sing
        Send him a new song
        From all over Mother Earth
All the people (from Mother Earth)
come to him to sing the new song.

    • April 26, 2013 at 9:33 pm

The Gathering of Nations Song was written for and given to the Gathering of Nations in 1996, it was composed in the Diné (Navajo) language by Alan Neskahi Jr. & Arlie Neskahi.

The song was in honor of Alan Neskahi Sr. who was one of the first translators of the bible on the Navajo Reservation. As Alan Neskahi Sr. was translating the Old Testament, he heard some of the songs in the Book of Psalms written by King David and he really liked them. He said the words in them were allot like Indian words.
“He had a dream some day that indian people would sing this song.” — Arlie Neskahi

This gift to the Gathering of Nations is for all people to sing in celebration of Indian Culture. The song is sung every Saturday evening for the final Grand Entry at the largest gathering of Native People in North America.

He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog.
You are his life, his love, his leader.
He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart.
You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.

gobrooklyn…..one more person remembering and praying for you. I admire your courage and attitude. So glad you have good medical care and family.

I read Smartypants’ oped about the FAA and the sequester…..and she makes good points. Also…..remember that POTUS is a political realist, not an ideologue. Just imagine the invective that would be hurled at him if the summer vacation season was totally wrecked by plane delays. People would not blame the Republicans, they would blame the President. If there were an awful airline crash because of overly tired control towers, or inadequate prep, if someone got on a plane with an explosive because of insufficient TSA inspectors, he would get the blame.
I have a feeling he’s thought this all out and understands it. What happened is not his first choice at all, but he is pragmatic and knows it’s necessary. What the Democrats should have done was suggest this first instead of standing on principle, then they could talk about helping the American people. Not just rich people fly. Many students will be crisscrossing the country after college is out, families will be going on vacations and to reunions…..our airline industry has become a basic one.

  33. April 26, 2013 at 10:22 pm

    Evening all.

I’ll have a night owl music chat soon-ish. Feeling a bit under the weather. My uncle came to help me prune trees, and it just wiped me out.

But, in exciting news, the missus and I had our first lunch out since her surgery! It was mucho fun. Then I came home and collapsed.

Give me a few minutes and I’ll have something up.
