rip richie havens – night owl chat

Richie Havens on Barack Obama, from a Cleveland Plain Dealer 2008 article:

Q: We’re speaking on the same day that Barack Obama will become the first black man to be nominated for president by a major party.

A: Amazing, isn’t it?

But I’ve been totally sort of accepting of the fact that that might’ve happened, let’s say, in 1964. [laughs] You know?

It’s been a long time coming.

I’ll walk through a place and see three or four kids and they’re standing there and they’re actually selling Obama shirts.

I say, “Who’s that?” — fooling around with the kids.

“That’s Obama!”

“Yeah? What’s happening with him?”

“He’s gonna be president!”

This is the biggest change America will ever have.

I sent my sorry ass Republican Senator a email and thank him and the NRA for looking out for the terrorists, making sure they can get their guns.

Rangel is suing Boner for his censure, saying that members knowingly voted for censure, even though the proof was circumstantial and not enough.

    Priceless! 🙂

Alycee, think of every atrocious thing from this governor as another weapon in the arsenal against him in 2014. He cannot remain as governor even if all of us have to move heaven and earth to defeat him.

First in the daylight ; ) Happy Sunrise!……..I read the discussions in last thread about Muslim/Christian extremists…..agree with all points but still leads me back to my original question……what is religion?…….is it just a belief in something?…..is it a belief in God?….do all religions believe in God or whatever they call God?…..Is someone who believes in Satan religious?(totally blanked on what you call it)…..I ask these questions b/c I struggle in even understanding how any of the terrorists…Oklahoma, Aurora, Tucson, Newtown, 9/11 and on and on….EVER believed in God/Allah………it seems to me that they should be called political extremists rather than religious extremists…….Please discuss…will not be here today to read but will read when I get home

My version of religion is something sacred value which leads me to wonder did God create man or did man create God? If we think about before Christianity was introduced to Africa, Africans had their own deities whom they looked upon with spiritual values.

“How is the Islamic idea of jihad different from the violence in the Bible?”

The most often discussed episodes of violence in the Old Testament were Yahweh’s command for the Israelites to destroy the Canaanites and return to the land that He had promised to them

I ‘m not sure what they should be called. Crazy, Deluded, ignorant, people maybe? One Christan I often wonder about is Nat Tuner. Yes, he was one of my historical heroes; but he said God was talking to him. Does that mean he was hallucinating when he started a salve rebellion and killed slave owners?

You have pro choice Christians who killed Dr. Tiller and bomb abortion clinics.

Look at the Westboro Baptist Church. They claim to believe in God; yet they do some hateful things.

If we put the actions of the terrorist in the mentally disturbed box does politics form their believes and actions?

Carney said the president and his administration did everything it could but in the end, a minority in the Senate ignored 90 percent of the American people who wanted the expanded checks.

“Everybody here from the president on down worked hard to bring about action on this legislation,” he said.

Carney declined to say if Obama personally called the Democratic senators who voted against it, including Sens. Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.), Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) and Mark Begich (D-Ala.). He said the president had “numerous phone calls,” but “I’m not going to detail every one of them,” adding that while a phone call from the president carries weight, the views of the American people should carry even more weight.

Carney said the president remains committed to passing stricter gun laws and repeated Obama’s assertion last week that this was only “round one.”

“I don’t have a legislative strategy to lay out to you today, but there will be a round two,” he said.

It’s Official Boston Suspect Motivated By Religion

As to what drove Tamerlan to violence, his younger brother has apparently told investigators it was his hatred of America, and its policies in Afghanistan and Iraq, law enforcement sources said.

I’ll bet Right Wing Nut Jobs are crying in their cornflakes this morning.

    • 46 utaustinliberal
      April 23, 2013 at 8:50 am

That’s not the main gist of the article though. The brothers were mainly motivated by the videos and teachings of Anwar Al-Awlaki (who was born in America) who was killed over a year ago and they were able to create bombs using what they learned on the internet. Apparently, it’s a “Do It Yourself Radicalization.” Then they were angry about America’s policies in Afghanistan and Iraq. The younger brother from what I’ve read, didn’t really have a staunch religious background and seemed to be doing his brother’s bidding.

Plus, the article said law enforcement officials aren’t just taking the suspect at his words. There’s more to this than meets the eyes and they’re continuing with their investigation.

Well, you still have People who say they are Chrisitans falling for what the Republicans are saying. Why is this so strange?
You still have Democrats who worship the Clinton’s. Why is so strange? For instance GLADD, President Obama did all the foot work and Bill gets the credit.
Believe it or not….there still are suckers born every day.

Morning everyone:) LL, thank you for posting this tribute to Richie Havens. Genius. He will be missed. It’s funny that I always pictured him as he was in my youth….I was surprised that he was older. I don’t know why that was, just always saw him as he used to be, with his black hair and black beard….singing from his heart with all the passion inside, flowing out. He will be missed.

Dumb moves from the Tsarnaev brothers…..
Stuff that made no sense—-more proof that the planning was their own. Example—–could not believe they stopped at a gas station convenience store to buy snacks!—-after carjacking the Mercedes—–and left the car owner in the car while they both went inside to select their fave potato chips—or whatever.
Many are asking about the shooting of that campus police officer as he sat in his cruiser—–that made no sense—-CBS has come up with an explanation—–that they wanted his gun—-tried to grab it but couldn’t because it was in a locking holster. But that’s still a hmmmmmmmm for me.
