Not sleeping, just running around a LOT. Got called to replace someone at work for a full week last week so since I’ve rarely been called lately I accepted. Unfortunately I cannot comment from work and very, very rarely can even see what’s happening. They have extended my coverage for the upcoming week, so it’ll be more of the same! Three quarters of me feels like saying ‘No, sorry, you’re interfering with my REAL life’ when they call, but the 1/4 that feels responsible to pay the bills succumbs. In addition for this weekend, representatives from the Caribbean school where my offspring volunteered (in music) the last two summers are in town performing and partying, so I volunteered to act as chauffeur for one day – all day Sunday! In short, I’m running here and there trying to get something done, with not much to show for it. 🙄 HOWEVER (so you’d better behave before heading off to bed yourself) I’ll be relaxing here for a couple -ish hours before having to hit the road again later this afternoon.

I know, eh? It doesn’t take long around here to be relegated to the outer edge of the crowd. 😀 😀 😀 You all won’t get rid of me so easily though. IT. IS. GREAT. TO BE ABLE TO ADD MY $.02, if only for a couple-ish hours today.

              • April 20, 2013 at 1:37 pm

I can’t believe the blog put you in spam, VC – sounds like your punishment for going missing for two days! Great to hear all’s good, although you sound super busy. Much as we tease you mercilessly, we miss ya when you disappear!!

That photo scares the bejabers out of me…. Growing up in prince george’s county ( MD) in the 50’s, in a rural zone surrounded by tobacco plantations, I am to this day vividly aware there were no ‘ children of color’ on our school bus, in our school, or in our churches. I know they existed, but I had no idea where. I remember looking out the window of the bus one day, seeing the remnants of a burnt cross on the lawn of a lovely little brick home, whose gardens sure looked finer than ours did. Those thoughts and images are very much alive within me to this day. I expect them to stay the rest if this life, at least.

Alycee, your response to Peter King was absolutely brilliant! By the way, Peter King used to be a strong support of the IRA. I am sure Catholics throughout the world would object to being called by the British terrorists just because the IRA, fighting on behalf of Catholics in Northern Ireland, committed acts of terror.

On the topic of “life goes on, the Latino Roundtable that we’ve been working on for months takes place tomorrow. We got front page coverage in our local paper and an unsolicited spot on the local radio. We’ve also run an ad in a regional Spanish language paper for two months and handed out hundreds of flyers. I hope all of these efforts give us a good crowd. We’ve got a great group of speakers coming from other counties and some good Latino food for refreshments. There are easily a thousand details left to take care of, but we’re getting there. The big point we want to get across is that being a “citizen” isn’t just defined by papers. It’s defined by your commitment to your country and taking responsibility for helping to make it the best it can be. Fingers crossed.

Great job with this, jackie! You are so right about the papers…..I find that those that truly understand community and giving back…are much better citizens than people who take it for granted or feel entitled simply by the mere fact that they were born here and have nothing left to do.

as we struggle to understand WHY two young men chose to cause so much carnage, could PART of the answer be bewilderment due personal family dynamics?

I could be wrong but I recall hearing that the main reason the father of the two suspects is in currently Russia is because his marriage was breaking up

    • 68 vcprezofan2
      April 20, 2013 at 1:57 pm

I’m not fully up-to-date on what’s been happening, GCL, but I can say there is supposedly an aunt in Canada, a lawyer, who has been quoted at practically each newscast. On the basis of her comments and manner alone I’d be inclined to lean towards ‘personal family dynamics.’ She apparently hasn’t seen the young men in the past five years, spoke with the elder a year ago, but doesn’t believe a word of what’s being said. ‘Where’s the evidence? Show me the evidence!’ Sight unseen she put me in mind of Orly Tait – she sounded abrasive, loud, argumentative, and not at all someone I’d want to represent me as a lawyer. I can understand a relative being supportive of family members, but IMO her tone and manner are not at all supportive though her words purport to be.

      April 20, 2013 at 5:50 pm

Thank you, globalcitizenlinda, for mentioning this. I am sure if these young men were white Christians, reporters would be reporting on this, or mental issues, as possible explanations

      Interesting. Asians, AA’s, Hispanics – 2 each; White – 1; Native Am – 0.

Frankly, I’ve always been bad at ID-ing race. My family reunions sort of look like a UN convention and just among the “pure” AA’s we come in every color from snow white to cast iron skillet black; when you add in the mixed race folks, we start resembling a crazy quilt. Love it!

What’s happening as we watch the media cover this story is that people are reacting in the moment and they’re demonstrating how totally ignorant so many of us are when it comes to truth about race.

The Cartoons are always a pleasure. I have to say though that I’m bothered by those who blame “Congress” in general for the defeat of the gun safety laws. NRA with Congress in its pocket, etc…

Lost in all of this is the fact that the problems lies , at 90%, with REPUBLICANS in Congress.

I have to say though that I enjoy seeing the NRA being pummeled, cartoon after cartoon. The NRA’s reputation is going down the drain. Note: Mr. Busch, a long standing member and a high profile one, resigned in disgust this week. The NRA is going down folks.

The impetus for these attacks on President Obama is sadly just payback for former President Bush screwing the pooch when it came to national security. 9/11 and everything that was born out of it is a damning indictment of the Bush Administration’s follies. Every successful mission that President Obama achieves will be met with more and more belligerents from the other side of the isle.

In the real world Terrorists aren’t supposed to be able to bomb a community on Monday, and are captured or killed by Friday of the same week, hell, it takes me longer to get an appointment with my primary care physician.

Talking and actually doing something are two completely different things. Chicken-Hawks talk a good game about war and everything that comes along with war. You can almost hear Republicans “moan” whenever word comes down that President Obama has killed or captured someone that did America wrong.

The Republicans are now talking about what sort of legal arrangements will be afforded to the Boston Bomber. But if you listen closely these questions have nothing to do with bomber, these questions are being asked with the intent of somehow catching President Obama in some sort legal or political entanglement. These questions aren’t coming from a place of genuine concern for the citizens, these are gotcha questions, these are questions designed to embarrass the President, and patriotism be damned.

What this great country has come to was vividly on display yesterday when an Uncle had to disavow his nephews will holding the American flag and chanting USA USA USA just to try and calm the flames and take the spotlight off of him, and his shell-shocked family and a war nation half a world away.

    • 77 Lovepolitics2008
      April 20, 2013 at 1:01 pm

Well stated, Don. Let’s never forget that the republicans have been HUMILIATED by the Bush presidency. They are very well aware that The Bush/Cheney presidency is considered one of the worst in history. So yes, they don’t hate President Obama only because he is a democrat and he is black. They hate him because he makes “their guy” look like the pathetic incompetent president he was. And even in the beginning, I mean in 2008, 2009, they hated Barack Obama because the whole WORLD loved him as much as they detested Bush.

    Great Toon Storytelling, Amk.

JFK’s Jan 20, 1960 Inaugural address, those words are severely needed to be heard by many of these Politicians in DC, mostly the TBGOPers. Dems need to push on these Words 24/7.

Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty.

To our sister republics south of our border, we offer a special pledge—to convert our good words into good deeds—in a new alliance for progress—to assist free men and free governments in casting off the chains of poverty. But this peaceful revolution of hope cannot become the prey of hostile powers. Let all our neighbors know that we shall join with them to oppose aggression or subversion anywhere in the Americas. And let every other power know that this Hemisphere intends to remain the master of its own house.

In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not shrink from this responsibility—I welcome it. I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation. The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it—and the glow from that fire can truly light the world. 24
And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country. 25
My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.

    Great Toon Post.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, Miranda, And The Public Safety Exception

What all this means is that the issue of not reading Tsarnaev his rights only really matters to the extent that the authorities are concerned with being able to use something that he might say in Court against him…
the authorities most likely don’t need Tsarnaev to confess to anything at all. Instead, they are interested in finding out what he is willing to tell them about what he and his brother did, why they did it, how it was financed, whether they had any confederates, and whether they were allied in any way with terror groups overseas. Thus, it’s more appropriate to view any future interrogation of Tsarnaev as an intelligence gathering operation rather than as part of a criminal investigation.

    Interesting read…

Sigh of relief here in Mass. Thanks for your prayers. Now, let’s wait for the law to take its course. This BS about blaming an entire religion, group or country is really sad. Now that the suspects turned out to be white, they then larch on to their religion. What shows that if someone prays five times a day, then they have to be radicalized or terrorists to be? In Islam, one of their tenets is praying 5x a day. Some do, some don’t, but it does signify one being a radical Moslem. I have family that belong to all religious sects and muslim relatives and friends and I refuse to sit by as they are branded as terrorists or radical moslems.

Thank you all on here that are fighting this otheriizing of all muslims and Islam as a religion. There’re bad bad people in all sects/ groups. Its even getting tiring to always fight back on painting Islam, “dark-skinned people” with a broad brush whenever one of them commits a crime.

The National Rifle Association is holding a crime prevention and personal safety seminar in August for New Hampshire lawmakers. The seminar titled ‘‘Refuse to be a Victim’’ will be held Aug. 14 at The Yard Seafood & Steak House from 6 to 9 p.m. The seminar also is open to the public, government officials, and law enforcement. It costs $35 and preregistration is required at http://www.defensivestrategies.org/refuse.

REALLY?? They should save themselves the $35 and show up to picket instead.

Greenwald has anger issues. His Only beef with pres Obama has to do with his live-in partner in Brazil. His anger that USA would Not allow his partner to migrate as his Husband……..Brazilians are here, they come and go all the time. Greenwald is looking for Marriage/Partnership Visa…..which USA doesn’t have. Only Congress could make that possible. So his anger has degenerated to emotional stagnation…..hatred of president Obama. Greenwald sees every issue on that personal level. I have no doubt that this form of hatred by him is destructive. Time will tell.

I found that I was talking to myself, so I hope you don’t mind me re-posting my thoughts.

    Morning TOD Family.

I spent most of last night lurking, because in the midst of everything that was going on, hubby decided to install Roku and needed my input and advice on EVERY LITTLE THING!!! (Breathe, Breathe). But it’s ok, I love him, doggone it!

As always Chips Darlin’, I thank you for this place of sanity and passionate, respectful discussion as well as accurate and sensible reporting…and lots of laughs thrown in despite the seriousness of the circumstances. I prayed so hard for everyone involved in this tragedy that my I gave myself a headache.

I’m SOOOO happy our beloved and courageous President has no events planned for this weekend. He deserves to spend quality time with his beautiful family. It’s interesting…when 9/11 happened, I never believed for one moment that Bush was in control of anything, but I have complete faith in PBO. This country is seeing, if they didn’t see it before, that you cannot screw around with this President. If he says he will get you, make no mistake, he will.

Heartfelt thanks to the Boston Police and the FBI. They kept an entire city safe under the most difficult of circumstances. And God bless the extraordinary citizens who ran toward the danger instead of away. This is who we are and it makes me proud.

I am really impressed with the cooperation that citizens in metro Boston gave to law enforcement. Based on conversations with friends here, I just don’t think that folks in my area would cooperate.

And Amen, God Bless Them. Really, they have demonstrated the power in solidarity, in joining together to achieve what would be much harder, if not impossible, any other way.

Oh I almost forgot, tonight in L.A. GLAAD will award former President Bill Clinton with its “First Advocate for Change Award.”
