Hi jacqueline – lots of late nighters around this evening. I fear I shall have consumed the bottle before dinner – which could be an interesting episode of drunk in charge of a saucepan this evening

          • April 19, 2013 at 8:15 am

            From Boston.com’s live blog:

“The Russian social website vKontakte has a page of a Dzhokhar Tsarnaev who lists himself as a resident of Boston and a member of the class of 2011 at Cambridge Rindge & Latin School. The school lists a Dzhokhar Tsarnayev as its athlete of the month for February 2011, and the recipient of a Cambridge scholarship in 2011.

The vKontakte page says that Tsarnayev studied at School No. 1 from 1999 to 2001 in Mkhachkala, which is in Dagestan, a predominantly Muslim republic on the eastern border of Chechnya. According to the profile, Tsarnayev is a member of the group “Everything About the Chechen Republic.”

The profile lists Tsarnayev’s languages as English, Russian and Chechen, and lists him as a Muslim. The posts were made well before the Boston Marathon bombing, and are mostly jokes and humorous videos. The last post was in 2012.

            – David Filpov, Globe Staff”

No, it doesn’t list motives, but Facebook is not all the world.

          April 19, 2013 at 8:29 am

I agree with the tweet I just read—-that where they’re from is not as important as the why. I don’t get this obsession with “caucasian”. Someone named Dzhokhar Twarneaev would not be considered “caucasian” in the familiar use of the word. Those roots are Arabic. And– calmite’, as we say in my house.

          • April 19, 2013 at 8:45 am

Dotster – you are splitting hairs. Russians are considered white, whether they were born in the US or just arrived yesterday. They are not African, Indian, or Asian. They self-identify as white, and they are VIEWED by others as white. There are many white people of Russian decent living and working in the US – as regular white people.

In the US, there has NEVER been any distinction made between white people from Russia versus White people from Western Europe, versus white people from Scandinavia (unless you are doing work in anthropology, population history or geography).

            • 135 utaustinliberal
              April 19, 2013 at 8:59 am

Exactly. You know your history hopefruit. You called it right. All this splitting of hairs is ridiculous. People can’t seem to believe that terrorists can be white too and that’s foolish.

          • 136 utaustinliberal
            April 19, 2013 at 8:56 am

Actually, you’re 100% wrong and you’re splitting hairs. Stop doing that. Stop giving the bombers wiggle room. Caucasian means from the Caucuses. That is the original whitest of the white. Russians, Chechen, etc. are WHITE. They self-identify as white. W-H-I-T-E. They are viewed as white. They are considered to be white. They are WHITE. They are seen by white people in America as white. On the Census, they are white. So please stop trying to twist things into a pretzel. The U.S. doesn’t officially make a distinction or split hairs about their whiteness. They are white. There are others like them who live like your everyday run of the mill white people in America. They are white.

      • 137 nathkatun7
        April 19, 2013 at 7:26 pm

What? Are you saying Chechnya, which is still officially part of Russia, is not part of Europe? Are you suggesting that all the people who are of European descent are Christians? Or, are you suggesting that Christian Europeans are the only true Caucasians? This would mean that Europeans who are atheists, or converted to Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, etc., cannot “in the familiar sense” be viewed as Caucasians.

It seems that race/ethnicity are used conveniently. So, now all of a sudden, Chechnyans, because of two Chechnyan individuals who are suspected of inflicting terror, are not caucasian because they are not European Christians. In my book Chechnyans are caucasians. Now if Americans want to blame their alleged heinous deeds on their religious beliefs that would be one thing. To deny that they are caucasians in the way that term has been used in racial classifications is totally absurd. Believe me, if the two alleged suspect in the Boston bombing were upstanding citizens no one would be suggesting that they are not white/Caucasians. If we still had Jim crow laws and practices these two Muslim Chechnyans, if they lived in the South, would be sitting in the front of the bus while the President and the Governor of Massachusetts, who are Christians, would be required, by law, to sit in the back of the bus.

Please don’t get me wrong. I don’t think the fact that they are Caucasians had any thing to do with them committing a heinous act. Just as the person’s dark skin should never be viewed as the reason why that person may commit heinous acts. White people of European descent-Caucasians-including those who are Christians- are not immune from committing heinous crimes.

  62. April 19, 2013 at 7:28 am

There are times where it’s better for the MSM to just report the facts and keep their speculations to themselves.

It will all come out who these people are, their affiliations, and perhaps the why’s of what they did. But leave it to the law enforcement and intelligence agencies to discern this information; not people whose only credentials are that someone has given them a forum to talk.

Law enforcement officials also told NBC News that the brothers entered the United States with family in 2002 or 2003, and that Tamerlan Tsarnaev became a legal permanent resident in 2007.

They’ve been in this country long enough to be American. The second suspect, the 19 yr old has been here half of his life. I really want to know WHY they did this.

It’s a shame that law enforcement had to blatantly tell the media that their priority, in addition to capturing the suspect, is the safety of citizens.

In their quest for breaking stories and feeding their news cycle, they have no qualms about putting lives in danger — particularly those in law enforcement that are directly involved in this situation.

    bbc live – wtf ?

And with that, the press conference is over – with no public confirmation of the identity of the bombers.

They just now said the us officials have confirmed the names.

Don’t know. CNN is reporting something is going on in a building where brother may have taken hostage. Smoke is coming from a building where brother may be hiding. if it’s false that’d be the 2nd erroneous report.

In the halls of the United States Senate, dozens of Senators congratulated themselves today for having what one of them called “the courage and grit to stand up to the overwhelming wishes of the American people.”

“We kept hearing, again and again, that ninety per cent of the American people wanted us to vote a certain way,” said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky). “Well, at the end of the day, we decided that we weren’t going to cave in to that kind of special-interest group.”

“It was a gut check, for sure, but we had to draw a line in the sand,” agreed Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S. Carolina). “If we had voted the way the American people wanted us to, it would have sent the message that we’re here in Washington to be nothing more than their elected representatives.”

Calling yesterday’s Senate action “a bipartisan effort,” Senator Mark Pryor (D-Arkansas) said, “This proves that on a matter that affects the safety of every man, woman, and child in the nation, we can reach across the aisle to defy the interests of all of them.”

I am very disappointed in some of the comments that I have read in the past day or so from some who are posting on this blog. Remember who this blog is dedicated to…a man who respects and cares for ALL people regardless of race and religion. Interesting as the details are, the important thoughts we should be having is the safety and welfare of all residents and law enforcement involved in this terrorist attack. The WHY of this will be made public in due time. Continuing to make disparaging remarks about the race or religion of the terrorists only makes you part of the problem.

      That’s true.

      Just saying.

“The vast majority of caucasion males are good people.” The same is true of the vast majority of Non-caucasian males. The same is true of the vast majorities of non-Christian males. What was truly objectionable were people who were ready to blame dark-skinned people for this heinous crime. But now that the suspects turn out to be white, all of a sudden they are seen as not being real whites because of their religion. Guess what, there are millions of Moslems who are white just as there billions of non-whites who are Christians. Of course this pre-occupation with using race/ and religion to indict groups of people is nothing new. When a non-white person commits a crime then all non-white people are viewed as suspects, but when a white person commits a crime his actions are viewed as individual actions and do not implicate the whole white race.

And interviews are playing now with former classmates from the suspect’s high school…he was captain of the wrestling team, and a popular guy, and sometimes played the class clown. Sounds very American to me.

I find it incredibly sad that any 19 year old thinks the solution to any issue involves blowing people up – it seems the media, the GOP and the NRA are teaching young Americans that violence and weapons are the best way to live.

my thoughts too 99ts. I really really hope this young man is not killed, I want to hear him explain the why, if he’s even able to explain. I am wondering how we are failing in this country when we have young people of this age.. Columbine, the Sandy Hook killer and now these young men- using exteme violence to solve/ resolve their issues.
