I saw from my timeline that CNN had on Mitt Romney and lo and behold, it’s true. He’s on to pretend he’s human?

So freaking true. When they were “dark skinned individuals” the media referred to them as terrorists. Now that they’re not, they’re calling them “young men” “gentleman.” 🙄

And I respect Booman. Speaking as a white Latino, white privilege is a hell of a drug.

          April 18, 2013 at 6:39 pm

They could be Southern European, North African, including Egyptian, That isn’t desperation, it is just reality. I think we need to avoid jumping to conclusions if we are to criticize others for doing the same thing.

I really don’t care what they are right now. We’ll deal with the consequences of that later. If these are the two that did it, and they may not be, I just want them caught.

          • April 18, 2013 at 6:42 pm

Valid points, japa. But I think the larger issue is that when the media was reporting “dark skinned” men were suspects, they couldn’t get enough of talking about “terrorism”. Now that OHMYGODTHEYMIGHTBEWHITE, they’re in contortions.

But, definitely, we need to let the FBI do its work. CSI has NOTHING on Quantico.

            April 18, 2013 at 6:44 pm

Technically it’s true that they could be a range of ethnicities. However, I can’t help but feel that the reason there’s suddenly so much speculation about their precise ethnicity has to do with the fact that they LOOK white, and there is anxiety about that for some reason, coupled a strong hope on the part of the speculators that they’re something else other than white American. That’s my take on it.

          • April 18, 2013 at 6:49 pm

I’m with you Japan, they really could be any nationality. I once traveled around with a woman friend who had dark curly black hair , big brown eyes and olive skin. When we went to India, the people there claimed her, the same thing happened in the Phillipines and Puerto Rico. And for awhile we happened to be staying in an urban part of DC and people on the streets thought she was a sister. It turns out her actual ancestral nationality was Russian Jew. So, there’s no way of knowing at this point about these culprits and their background.

They look like they could be any of about 100 ethnic backgrounds. We should probably wait for more info as more is known, when and if they apprehend these 2 guys. I will be shocked if they’re just 2 college kids from Iowa sitting in a dorm room or an apt. in Boston right now.

Actually I wouldn’t be all that surprised. I don’t know if you’re aware, but the rise of RW militia groups has skyrocketed in the last 5 years. And these groups target young men of high school and college -age who are impressionable and may be going through various identity crises and rebellion of sorts. This is analogous to the young Black male in the inner city who is angry and joins gangs for validation and “acts out” in violent ways. We live in a culture of violence and with the internet, violent ideas and images are easily accessed and transmitted. With the Tea Party, amidst calls for armed revolution by RW politicians and Libertarian activists, that sort of thing does not surprise me one bit.

Could be—you may be right. I am very aware of rt. wing militia groups—read about them all the time—mostly in the south and—see them driving in Indiana in old rattle trap cars/trucks with gun racks in caravans and in camouflage going off to their weekend gatherings. Just don’t usually identify them as college types. In any case, we will probably know their identities soon. Cheers.

Good Lord, there is no way to tell what ethnicity these young terrorists are…..I am caucasian, a mixture of English, Austrian, Irish, and Scottish.and I’m darker than either one of them..my husband the same but Scottish, English, Dutch….these guys look just like our two boys when they were young…one older than the other……the one thing I noticed is that they don’t appear to have jeans on like most of the other people there….not that that has anything to do with anything.

race is meaningless. we’re all “mixed.” it’s just about how far back you want to look. that’s why i’m a little surprised at this conversation. if these are the guys, then we have 2 mass murdering terrorists, and nothing else. end of story. full stop.

      • 95 hopefruit2
        April 18, 2013 at 7:19 pm

Well you see, in decades past and current, the media and law enforcement and to some extent, the public, have made a huge deal out of the RACE of the person – particularly when the suspect happens to be darker-skinned as in African-American, dark Hispanic or (since 911), Arab/middle-Eastern, etc.

And up until today, there was still this huge deal being made of the race or ethnicity of the potential suspects. As the surveillance cameras go, they happen to look white. And true, we do not know their exact ethnicity – you would have to give someone a genetic test to know that, but we can reasonably conclude that they are most likely Caucasian.

          April 18, 2013 at 7:29 pm

yea, i understand the history and why it gets talked about. i just like to get people to think in new ways about “race” so that future generations don’t repeat the same mistakes quite so much. it’s all kind of ridiculous, and unfortunately it’s a really loaded topic because of all that “mixed up” history, as evidenced by the moronic media treatment of the topic.

I actually think the FBI has a lot more info than they’re letting on. They have more than just the pics/videos. They may not have the suspects in custody but likely have some pretty good leads of where they are, and how they can find them.

    • 120 4morefor44
      April 18, 2013 at 7:33 pm

that was my first thought too. they are very careful in what they release and could possibly even be baiting a trap for them or someone who knows them with hopes they’ll step in it. they’re highly trained in this stuff and know a lot of tricks!

    • 121 Lovepolitics2008
      April 18, 2013 at 9:01 pm

I’m not sure they know who they are or where they can find them. However, I’m pretty sure they have good evidence against them. Because despite their asking the public to not do anything more than call the police, they know there is a possibility that self-appointed vigilantes will try something foolish. Publishing photographs in such a high profile case is risky. The FBI did it because 1) they were pretty sure those young men are guilty and 2) it’s the only way they have a chance to find them quickly.

So John King is apoplectic that people are questioning if he’s a racist or not, too bad, he signed up for it when he went on national t.v. and said the Boston bombing suspects were black….I mean dark skinned. Let me tell you what I didn’t sign up for, I didn’t sign up to be followed around a department store, I didn’t sign up to have women clutch their purses as they walk in my direction, I didn’t sign up to hear the sound of car doors being locked as I crossed the goddamn street with bags of groceries in both arms, I didn’t sign up to walk in a bank to get some money out of my account and have the teller walk in a back room with my I.D. and have me wait for twenty fucking minutes just to get money out of my account, I didn’t sign up to have some white guy ask me I if was from this country just because I knew who Leon Panetta was, I didn’t sign up to have a realtor question me about my credit score and whether or not I’ve ever been arrested before I could finish saying hello, I didn’t sign up to have a waiter tell me the food in the restaurant I was in was expensive before he gave my wife and I the fucking menu. I’m not telling you these things because I’m looking for sympathy, I’m just telling you about the shit that the average black man has to put up with, so when John King gets upset at getting called out for an error he made, he should get on his goddamn knees and pray to his god that he doesn’t have to go through the same bullshit that the average black guy walking down the street does. Am I angry, hell yes, have I given up hope about the idea that a person should be judged by the content of their character and not the color of their skin, hell no.

Japa, this a minor point, but it was 45 (41 Republicans and 4 Democrats), and not 46, who filibustered the bill! Sen. Reid changed his vote to no (making it 46) for procedural reason in order to be able to bring back the bill since a majority of Senators voted for the Bill.

STATE OF PLAY:When a long-awaited revival of a bipartisan Senate energy-efficiency bill dropped Thursday, its sponsors and interest groups immediately got to work to ensure it wouldn’t fizzle out like last year.

The bill could be a litmus test for whether Congress can pass substantive energy legislation this session, as there’s been some recent bipartisan, bicameral goodwill on energy efficiency.

Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and Rob Portman (R-Ohio) quickly chose staunch conservative Rep. David McKinley (R-W.Va.) and ardent liberal Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.) to shepherd the House version of their bill.

That iteration will be similar to the Senate legislation, which would establish voluntary efficiency standards for new building codes and require the federal government to undertake energy-saving practices. The bill has much more, which E2-Wire covered here.

The groups that endorse the bill, ranging from the National Association of Manufacturers to the Alliance to Save Energy, also will soon turn to securing support from other lawmakers.

For Shaheen and Portman, one of the first moves is to secure Senate co-sponsors that strike a balance between Republicans and Democrats, a lobbyist with one of the groups backing the bill told The Hill.

Two questions I would have asked at the press conference……..Where they Foreigners? And what ethnicity were there? Those two questions would have eliminated the European or East European angle.
