I like it when the journos are calm and collected and report facts instead of all the hand waving, unwanted belligerence and shouting that seems to be the norm today.

So do I amk. That was why I so appreciated Scott Pelley and the CBS coverage today. Calm, collected, factual, no conjecture, good old fashioned journalism.

When I was studying in US in late eighties, cbs was my go-to news station. Regular watcher of 60 minutes and dan rather. Used to have arguments with peter jennings fan friends of mine on who is better. None of us cared for brokaw even then. 🙂

Glad pelley is trying to some real journalism here.

Great song, and video Carol. Our barenaked ladies are strong advocates of the earth. We had some times with the barenaked ladies trying to shut down our mills here on Vancouver Island. I understand his advocacy but I don’t understand how he thinks that he would like to shut down everyones work, while he makes his millions. Barenaked ladies are a bit of a fluff here. There songs are great, but their advocacy is a little too strong in Canada. And I’m not referring to the oil sands, I’m referring to paper mills.

Didn’t realize my comments on the last thread were at the end of the thread, want to pass on my thoughts of the Boston marathon…I haven’t commented here in a very long time, but I do read this blog everyday. My heart goes out to the families of this unspeakable act in Boston today and to all that have suffered from it. Brings tears to my eyes once again for all the victims involved. The President’s words sounded very honest, and there is no doubt he and his team will find out who did this. My brother-in-law participated in the marathon just last year. Very sad, In Canada we are getting reports of people that have lost limbs and 2 dead. Is this Al-Qeida? Or is it the republican/tea-partiers? I would hope it is the first, but right now I don’t trust the right wing.

    • April 15, 2013 at 10:42 pm

We are not speculating. Too many variables, not enough facts made public. Please trust President Obama and his team.

Yes, I understand there isn’t enough information yet to come to any conclusions. I trust the team of Barack Obama to come to their conclusions, but I hate the thought of even thinking that the tea partiers or republicans might have something to do with this.

I HOPE NO ONE TAKES THIS THE WRONG WAY. (STOP YELLING MAGAPIE!!!) Today was horrific, BUT…….. We are so fortunate in this country. And THANK YOU to Homeland Security and police women and men and all of our devoted GOVERNMENT (hello!) safety and security folks for all you are doing under constant criticism and derision. THIS KIND OF STUFF RARELY HAPPENS in this vast, diverse and VERY FREE society What do YOU want to do that you can’t do? WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO THAT YOU CAN’T DO?? We are Americans and we LOVE to gather in big, festive groups and present easy, soft targets all across our country as a matter of tradition, life-styles and community. Yet we remain very safe. Remember post September 11th hysteria. DEAD. We’re ALL going to die SOON. Crop dusters!!! Anthrax!!! Poisened water systems! What did they call the radical plants that were supposedly EVERYWHERE?? Anyway….you know what I mean. The events today were horrible. but.

Thanks for the post, Chips. Where does a person’s brain have to be to think a time of tragedy and horror calls for a discussion of language and politics? Any media that chooses to foist that kind of blathering idiocy on the public, needs to be shut out. Every decent American should turn off his/her TV tonight and go and hug their children and spouse, call a family member or loved friend, or find some thing to do that brings comfort, even if that means calories. Tomorrow, we can all do something positive–tell someone how much we love them, extend an unexpected act of kindness, donate blood that doesn’t go to Boston, stop by a church and light a candle or invite some neighbors over to talk about why it’s important NOT to be afraid. There are lots of things we can do to bring a little light into the world, but tuning into the media isn’t one of them.

My son and his wife have run marathons. It’s a joy to be at the finish line whether they are first or last. In the first one Joy was first, Robby a couple hours behind. We enjoyed it all. We brought our two dogs and the kids waiting for their mother to finish had a great time walking them all over the park. They loved it too. There were about a hundred people there. Talked to many. Runners have a tremendous high when they have run a long ways. I’ve felt it a few times. I’ve observed it too. Grandma called concerned about Rob and Joy. They weren’t planning on going. Rob has run a marathon at 2:58, so he got better. Everyone’s heart is in Boston tonight. I heard some of the elite runners went to the hospitals or wherever and gave blood. It’s a shame the winners are not enjoying celebrations tonight. Also got in touch with a very good friend of Robby’s that we know who runs too. He didn’t run this year and is ok in Omaha. All runners from our small town have been in touch with the local paper to let them know they were ok. They told what they knew happened to them. Check your local papers. It’s a good chance someone in your area was there. As Republican as WY is, and my mother-in-law, they still care. No politics were brought up by either Grandma or our local paper. Let’s not become crazy. Well, I got a little off topic so I’m off to pet my pets. Hubby’s working nights, everyone’s been called. Safe in front of the fire. Expecting a snowstorm tonight. Weather happens. 🙂 on a lighter note, W is a Grandpa. It’s also Joy’s birthday.

Bob, you don’t realize the mental mind behind these runners. They are nuts on their run. Nothing will take them down, they are pretty much silly and nutty about it. My brother-in-law ran it last year and trust me, nothing takes them down.

Carol, my young niece works in admissions at Mass General. The horrors she saw were overwhelming to her, yet she said she was so incredibly proud of the way the whole staff, doctors, nurses, helpers, pulled together as one. Horror and pride, such a potent combination for a young woman in her first real job.

Since Jan 20, 2009…….How many crisis have this president faced?

From a collapsed economy. 2 wars left for him. Destructive and Obstructive Opposition. Fox declaring itself the Opposition to this POTUS. MSM an entity that I truly believe has seeded racial animus against this president. BP Gulf Oil Spill. The Arab Spring. North Korea, Iran. Europe Financial crisis. Auto Crumbling. Debt Ceiling. Down-Grading of USA’s credit rating. Birthers. AK-47 totting near this president’s rally. Tea-party Uprising. Climate devastation. OBL. Re-election. Hatred. Terror…..under garment Bomber, Forte Hood, Shootings…..mass shootings. Boston Attacks. Etc, etc, etc……..

They say that the Lord Almighty Never Gives one more than he/she can handle. I believe that. However, I am asking for smooth sailing for this POTUS from Now on. In Jesus Name, Amen.

My cousin is a nurse in one of those Boston hospitals. Despite all my repeated attempts, I’ve not been able to get in touch with her. I am assuming that she is very busy taking care of all the people injured today. Jon is absolutely right. Just as we pray for the recovery of all the people injured to day, we need also to pray for the men and women working tonight in Boston hospitals taking care of all the victims of this senseless violence. This has to be one of the most difficult days in their lives.

Not sure what happened on one of the threads where I posted “prayers up!” as a positive thought for Boston and all of the United States tonight.

I will not speculate as to the details of what happened today. If there is one thing to be glad of, it’s that medical personnel and 1st responders were RIGHT THERE. I’m sure that this could have been even worse if that were not the case.

I trust the training of the current 1st responders to do what they do best. I trust the FBI to investigate the incident and find out who was responsible for it. I trust my President to lead a nation tired of these assaults and prayerful for a better country.

I hope that any of you who have loved ones in the Boston area have been able to contact them.

    Prayers up!

Thank you Ms. Chips for this place of solace. Never once did I even think about turning on MSM. When I first heard the news I immediately begin to pray. Thank God for the prayer warriors at my place of worship. We all met up and began to pray for the people of Boston, this nation, our President and his family and the world. While praying I felt that it was not who people are suspecting, but homegrown who may have inflicted this unecessary pain.(just my gut feeling). I think Tally voiced this on one of the early threads.
My prayer ended with….let the truth be revealed. The whole truth and nothing but the truth….

These are desparate times and evil people will do desparate things. We are not to fear because in the Scripture Romans 8:28 let us know we have no need to fear. That empty dark place is replaced with faith and hope. What an excellent post from our own LL! The right words for the right time whose hearts are hurting.
May God bless the people who were injured, the families of the lives loss and the people who reached out to help those in need. The words of our President were just what we needed to keep the faith and encourage one another as we go through this together.
    PEACE

I noticed that Paul Begala used the fourth verse of America the Beautiful in a tweet earlier this evening.

Most everyone knows the first verse, but Ray Charles always started off with the third verse of this beautiful song.

    O beautiful for heroes prov’d
    In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country lov’d,
    And mercy more than life.

    America! America!
    May God thy gold refine
    Till all success be nobleness,
    And ev’ry gain divine.

Given everything that Mr. Charles went thru in his life, it is moving to me that he still loved this country.

Even as I bitch and moan about people afflicted with ODS (Obama Derangement Syndrome) and how bad our education system has become, I too, love this country of mine. Probably not in the “patriotic” sense that the hacks that we have as news readers would have us believe; it’s more complicated than that – much more complicated.

Any way, I listen to Ray and know that we, as a country, will also survive this. My thoughts tonight are with the people of Boston. Peace…

It’s a small, small world. My son is an acquaintance of the fourth place finisher. They ran in Las Vegas together. My son and his wife live in Boulder County. Think they have been to the Boulder training center if memory serves me right. An excerpt from Wikipedia: He came fourth at the Fifth Third River Bank Run in 2010, but preparations for the 2010 Chicago Marathon were interrupted by a break with his coach, Steve Jones. Jason Hartmann instead began training with Lee Troop, who was setting up a small elite group known as the Boulder Track Club in Boulder, Colorado. The coach change led to his best marathon finish of 2:11:06 hours for eighth place and he was the first American to cross the line. In May 2011 he beat Keflezighi to the top U.S. finish at the 100th Bay to Breakers.[11] He was runner-up in the Las Vegas Half Marathon with a time of 1:03:34. Hartmann had geared his preparations towards he 2012 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, but finished far off his target of the top three as he ended the race in 32nd place.[3] Keen to make up for this disappointing performance, Hartmann set his eyes on the 2012 Boston Marathon . He decided to run tactically and stayed away from the leading pack. The leaders dramatically slowed in the heat while Hartmann worked his way up to field to eventually finish in fourth place (the only non-Kenyan to make the top six).[12][13]

Is it me or my computer, but I don’t see Lib_Librarian’s essay on this thread. No problem for me, I copied it and saved to notebook to reread when I felt down.

Mika embarrassed herself by not knowing that Peter King is no longer Chairman of the DHS committee…..but Congressman McCaul who is only in his second term was impressive for not jumping to conclusions.

I really pray that it is domestic terrorism. Because if it’s foreign, it just will raise the hatred and paranoïa towards muslims to a level that I think may become dangerous for muslim americans. In the last few years, the hard right has fanned the flames as much as they could. To imagine what they’ll do if the people behind the Boston bombings end up to be muslim extremists…
