This is a tweet put out by Tim Wise.. and I’m a bit stunned by it, also the link to the Nation article about chained CPI is rather ‘fear mongerish’ .. and not how Deaniac is explaining chained CPI.

LL you see this? For you Chips, UT, and all the soccer hooligans: Messi Vs. A Robot Goalkeeper: Who Ya Got?

      • April 11, 2013 at 7:38 pm

I saw the Messi video yesterday. Couldn’t score against a robot!!

And thank goodness for goal line technology. The thing is, it will only be implemented in the world’s richest leagues. You won’t see it at a Coventry City match.

        • April 11, 2013 at 7:43 pm

I don’t follow soccer all that much.. I just remember I think it was Ireland that was robbed in a WC qualifier or Olympics, cant remember. They had all the replays and could not do nothing, seemed stupid.

          • April 11, 2013 at 7:49 pm

Ireland would still have been robbed. Thierry Henry blatantly handled the ball which helped him score a goal. No football league is talking about instant replay.

            • April 11, 2013 at 7:52 pm

I don’t get it….why not put out the best product…To many Ty coon’s, Emirs, Crown Prince’s, Glazers(Tampa Bay Buc’s) Red Sox ownership, own teams, must be a lot of gambling they are profiting from?

              • April 11, 2013 at 7:58 pm

Association football (“soccer” is from association) is much like baseball: steeped in tradition, very loath to change. Just as the Yankees and Dodgers have long pedigrees, so do the top football clubs in Europe. Just like baseball STILL resists instant replay, so does football. I don’t see either sport giving in to that any time soon.

To test the water tonight, I tuned into CBS news at about twenty of the hour. The news was straight…..storms, gun safety legislation, immigration legislation, then a segment on the chaplain who was awarded the Medal of Honor today. Pictures of the President and the chaplain’s nephew, and interviews with two of the men who served with him, and whose lives he saved. Bill Whitaker interviewed a California farmer who needs more workers in his fields, and is hoping the immigration bill will pass soon and make a way for guest labor. Whittaker asked him why, with the high unemployent, he can’t get Americans to work in the fields. The man was diplomatic….he said, for the last 70 or so years, others have felt it beneath them to work in the fields so we rely on workers from Mexico.
In the segment on gun legislation one of the Sandy Hook women was shown giving a presser in the Senate. All of this was presented in a way worthy of CBS of old. No opinions, no sneers, no snark, just straight news.
I think Pelley’s interview with the Sandy Hook parents on 60 minutes played a big part in the change in the temperature I’m feeling regarding gun safety legislation. I wrote him and commended him for that interview.

    • April 11, 2013 at 7:42 pm

“I think Pelley’s interview with the Sandy Hook parents on 60 minutes played a big part in the change in the temperature I’m feeling regarding gun safety legislation. I wrote him and commended him for that interview.”

      Well done, Carolyn!!! Thank you

    • April 11, 2013 at 7:44 pm

Thanks for your report. I never watch news anymore unless I’m tuning in for something specific. The last time I watched was a few months back and it was CBS News with Scott Pelley. Maybe other regular watchers have a different opinion, but I also thought he did a very decent job.

      • 73 carolyn
        April 11, 2013 at 7:50 pm

I had watched the video of the presentation, and was curious to see how it was handled. The entire ceremony was very moving. With a father who was a WWII vet, and a husband who is a Korean War vet, I was very interested. Korean War vets were guests at the ceremony. At the end of the segment, Pelley said that the Catholic church is considering the chaplain for sainthood.

        • April 11, 2013 at 8:01 pm

Wow, that’s interesting. I watched the ceremony starting at a few minutes in and I didn’t catch who the man was on stage to receive the award. Son? He was very moved and PBO comforted him compassionately. A beautiful ceremony.

          • 75 carolyn
            April 11, 2013 at 8:04 pm

The man who received the award for the Chaplain was the Chaplain’s nephew. As daughter of a WWII chaplain, this award and ceremony were very meaningful to me.

    • April 11, 2013 at 7:54 pm

Home safely. Appreciate the thoughts and prayers.

Regarding CBS: I’ve mentioned a couple of times that I began watching CBS couple months ago. Even in the morning, if I don’t watch our local show, I watch CBS. Occasionally, there’s something stupid, but for the most part, it is mostly straight news. NOTHING like NBC and Chuck Todd for sure!!!!!!!

I was in dire straights, and very upset with myself, there was no way I could fix it, and amk was quite a gentleman, he even refused the 100K I offered initially, and promptly accepted the 10,000 hugs instead! It’s all fine now, Chipsticks will be very proud of how well-managed the blog is while she is off gallivanting! πŸ˜‰

Quite a gentleman??!! He accepted payment, no matter the currency!! 😯

Okay so you were in dire straights – I can understand that. I can even understand and accept you were grateful for his prompt assistance. What gets me though is that you seem to have forgotten that he has been hounding **me** for money for weeks now. I’d even started looking over my shoulder just in case, and wondering, after a recent comment of his, if I had to start keeping a closer eye on my bank account. Now you paying his so happily is bound to have repercussions.

/taking 2 or 3 very deep breaths/ Sigh! Don’t worry about it, PM. I apologize for losing my cool. I’ll work this out, Maybe if I soften my stance and pretend to be amenable to paying him in your coinage at a later date, he`ll eventually forget. This goes against my better judgement though. Sigh!

    Obama’s Soft Power

Creating this change requires four things from us:

1] We must maintain our own balance while taking theirs
    2] We must react fearlessly
3] We must enter into the very center of the conflict
4] We must understand our opponent’s intentions in order to achieve resolution

When we follow these four steps for creating change, we don’t just change the situation, we change our opponents

Pray for these weak knee cowards politicians in D.C. too, who think practices like this is just fine.

I know that many people have issues with Irish “wear your heart on your sleeves” Irishmen Chris Matthews and Andrew Sullivan. But despite everything, Andrew is a big supporter of President Obama, the “Deficit Hawk.”

    • April 11, 2013 at 9:15 pm

The article linked to in Andrew’s posting references “state surpluses.”

I don’t know if CA will have a surplus, but we’re on our way (and DC MSM wrote us off as a basket case this time last year — lazy overpaid echo-chamber stenographers).

Ban Ki Moon pulled a Netenyahu in the WH today, embarrassing the President.
He said, he has asked the President to show stronger leadership in Syria(para phrasing).
The President did not look happy. 😦

The guy has been scaremongering about north korea too in the last week. How about some leadership from UN for a change ?

And I don’t mean to wear out my welcome on the topic of high-speed rail (HSR) for CA, but the interval between these two tweet timestamps
is about 6 hours to cover the approximately 800 miles from Beijing to Shanghai.

How great for business would it be to go from Los Angeles to Silicon Valley in 2-3 hours (and vice-versa, of course)?

And on A1, above-the-fold of the print LATimes today:

I’m not sure if this has been posted already, but this report had some comments from the kids that met with FLOTUS at the beginning of the segment and at the end….it truly warmed my heart. The reporter called it “The Michelle Obama Effect”. I saw another report that the First Lady told them she would stay as long as they needed to speak with her. It ended up being 2 hours and 15 minutes. I know FLOTUS wishes she could sit with every child, but those 22 kids got a sample of the mothering our FLOTUS gives her own children. They were just beaming to receive time and attention—-to be recognized, acknowledged and validated really goes a long way and leaves an impression. Our FLOTUS is so special.
