Tuesday = Memphis Soul time

Hey, any excuse:

Tuesday:

WH.gov: As part of their “In Performance at the White House” series, the President and First Lady will invite music legends and contemporary major artists to the White House for a celebration of Memphis Soul music.

The program will include performances by Alabama Shakes, William Bell, Steve Cropper, —-> Al Green <—-, Ben Harper, Queen Latifah, Cyndi Lauper, Joshua Ledet, Sam Moore, Charlie Musselwhite, Mavis Staples and Justin Timberlake, with Booker T. Jones as music director and band leader.

The entire event will be streamed live on White House live starting at 6:55 PM ET – and will be broadcast Tuesday, April 16 on PBS ….

As she has done with previous White House music events, the First Lady will host a special daytime event for students.

The First Lady will welcome 120 middle and high school students from across the country to take part in an interactive student workshop event: “Soulsville, USA: The History of Memphis Soul.” Beginning at 11:00 AM in the State Dining Room, Robert Santelli, Executive Director of The GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles, will lead the students in an overview of the origins of Memphis Soul, discuss important artists from throughout its history, and explore the elements of soul and gospel that helped contribute to the genre’s unique sound.

The workshop, “Soulsville, USA: The History of Memphis Soul,” will stream live on White House live

      Congrats, WiW, you were really close!
      I thought of you today (yesterday really) on two specific occasions – one when SWBlue shared her very pointed letter that she sent to her senator, and two when I was trying to share the twitter contacts for the Repub senators from “BLUE” states. Hopefully things continue to go well for you and you keep on top of your ‘day job’ while doing so much else for democracy.

          Hi there, Theo! I thought so too, but my body hasn’t followed. It’s caving in now though. I’ve literally been signed on since 8-ish this morning, and my eyes are starting to feel the strain. Have a good night yourself!

    Bringing this over because I’m too damn lazy to type it again:)

    LovelyPlains and NCLB…..thoughts are with you and arms are wrapped around you….thinking happy thoughts:)
    Just got done writing to Senator Flake….he needs a BIG PUSH. I will keep on pushing and pushing.

    Been reading but not posting…..been quite an emotional day. I am in awe of this President. In awe of the Newtown families. If they can do this, surely we can not be silent. My voice will be raised to the heavens until they listen and hear us. I do this for my children and the ones that were taken too soon…. I won’t shut up and sit down!

    Some of us sleep, amk 🙂 Be heading that way shortly, as the big dog is starting to bug the crap outta me about bedtime….does anyone else here have such a smart dog as mine that knows how to tell time? She does! 9:15 she starts on me…without fail…until we go to bed. She usually gets a big grin on her face when I tell her it’s bedtime…swear to God. ( The big dog is REALLY a big dog…I’m not talking about hubby 🙂

      Sweet dreams df – may the thousands join in that push to Senator Flake – sometimes names are very apt at describing people – there are a number of politicians who should well think about a name change!

      My grandbabe is here – she just sprinted the length of the living room on hands and knees – it is almost time to batten down the hatches

        Thank you, 99:) I agree…FLAKE fits him perfectly…I actually have another name for him, but I won’t go there right now.

        Squeeze the grandbaby for us:) Sounds like you better batten down the hatches…once they start racing around the house, all bets are off! Night…see you tomorrow

      Don’t feel bad, LDS 🙂 I’ve been left talking to myself on an old thread more times than I care to acknowledge…it’s downright embarrassing. I talk to myself in my house AND on TOD, so what else is new?! Only difference is, no one laughs at me when I do it here…home? not so much….

      Off to bed for me…see you all tomorrow. I don’t know who has the morning shift…but I call first!! 🙂

    Focus on the Congressional Black Caucus re: mobilizing constituents in support of gun legislation:

    One thing we have always heard some members of the Congressional Black Caucus routinely say is that PBO is not paying enough attention to issues that are of great importance to the African American community (ps, I don’t agree with this false claim).

    Please help me to remind the members of the Congressional Black Caucus that well, here is the issue of gun violence that affects a significant proportion of the community they represent.

    So where are the loud voices of the Congressional Black Caucus to mobilize the community and to also keep this issue a priority in the news?

    Pushing for sensible gun legislation should not be left to PBO alone. I want the CBC to stand up and be counted on this issue.

    I am kindly asking others here to contact the members of the Congressional Black Caucus and demand that they stand up on this and publicly support PBO.

    here is the general twitter account for the Congressional Black Caucus: @OfficialCBC

    Could someone please provide the contact information for the specific members.

    As Washington continues to flounder on gun control legislation, state and local governments are looking to themselves for solutions:

    =================

    “Using sales taxes as a gun control tool”

    http://www.politico.com/story/2013/04/guns-bullets-taxes-gun-control-tool-89782.html

    State and local officials are pushing a new way to expand gun control: taxes.

    Gun owners in and around Chicago last week started paying a new $25 tax on every firearm they purchase. In California, a statehouse panel on April 15 will hear testimony on a nickel-per-bullet tax measure, and in New Jersey, lawmakers want to slap an additional 5 percent sales tax on guns and ammo.

    …but it shows how far some states and localities are willing to go in this new frontier on gun control — especially as Washington struggles to find consensus even on the most scaled-back gun proposals being debated in Congress.

    State lawmakers, meanwhile, are making the case for why taxes should be part of the debate
    .
    “There are costs incurred as a result of gun violence which are borne by the general taxpayer — both social and economical,” California Assemblyman Roger Dickinson, who put forward a nickel ammo tax proposal in January, said in an interview. “There ought to be a cost … to those who want to buy firearms.”

    Like other gun and ammo tax supporters, Dickinson is careful to portray his proposal, which would be earmarked for mental health programs, more as a way to pay for issues related to gun violence than as a plan to curb the ownership of weapons.
    ========

    This idea about a surcharge on ammo reminds of a Chris Rock comedy routine on the subject. (I often find that many comedians have some degree of logic and truth in this midst of their humor)

      The sharpest comedian today. In addition to taxing the ammos and guns, adding common sense product liability insurance would sure go a long way to control teh gun crazy.

    6 yr. old shot in head by 4 yr. old in N.J.—–sure is smart having a gun in the home…it’s almost always family members or other innocents in the neighborhood who pay the price.

    Good Morning…could not find one word in NC papers about Sen. Richard Burr’s position on blocking the vote on background checks.Was I the last to know?…Is this old news?..Or, is blocking a vote on something that 90% of the American public supports, just not important news…Ok, I have written, called both Senators, many times, emailed everyone I know, retweeted your tweets although I have no followers b/c I don’t tweet but never the less, and asked on facebook for everyone to call/write Senators, donated money to both OFA and Brady…don’t know of anything else I can do……

      please consider adding members of the Congressional Black Caucus to the list – they need to lead on this given the amount of damage gun violence has wrecked on the community.
