Well, I was at the end of the last post, talking to myself, but I am proud of what happened so will bring it here.
Sunday morning our pastor said that sometimes civil disobedience is necessary and spiritual. He then said that someone from Mayflower would be participating in this kind of action this week, and smiled toward the right front of the sanctuary.
Well, this evening we watched Chris Hayes (excellent segment on the positive outlook for gun legislation) In his Click 3 segment, the second picture was of a small lady who chained herself to the XL pipeline in Oklahoma. He showed her picture clearly, gave her name, and wow! There was the lady from our church. Tiny, but determined. She was able to postpone their working for 3 to 4 hours. I am proud to know her and proud of her for doing this. She is a very bright woman and very concerned with what’s going on. Her car is covered with stickers for many liberal causes.
So glad to be able to report this after the stupid statement by Jim Inhofe today!!!
Have to report that I got two of my college colleagues to write our senators today about gun legislation.

      April 9, 2013 at 9:11 pm

GOOD FOR HER!!! Maybe Inhofe would like to respond to the one I posted below….he’s such an idiot

      • 29 carolyn
        April 9, 2013 at 9:18 pm

Well, Rachel just showed the tape of stupid Inhofe in all his ignorance. She said this is the first tape of that now infamous interview. It’s out there for all the world to see. She said so far he has “not responded to their entreties for a response.” The filibuster has lost…Inhofe has lost. This is a GOOD day. The president knew what he was doing when he took those Newtown parents to D.C. on Air Force One.
She stated that now for the first time we have an even fight. The Newtown parents have hired a lobbying firm to work for and with them. I said a couple of days ago that one difference with the Newtown group is that they have time and money to keep this going. Previous groups of victims did not have the resources for this. The equation is now changed.

    • April 9, 2013 at 9:26 pm

Thank you Carolyn, for bringing over from the last thread (with timely updates, to boot).

MSM really needs to take a hard look at itself and issue corrections when they’re wrong. This is standard practice for (the dying) print media, but Chuck Tod blatantly LIED yesterday on his program, saying that the support for gun safety was trailing off after the gruesome Sandy Hook massacre.

      WTH?

He said this on-air about 12 hours after the heartwrenchin 60 Minut4s interview with the courageous parents (and some callous local lawmakers).

He said this when he KNEW President Obama would be speaking Connecticut that very same day.

His head is too big for his hat and he should be disciplined.

The biggest tragedy in all this is that he serves as a mentor to young Luke Russert, who is learning that being an arrogant lying clown is how to ahead in TV-world. To me, Chuck Todd is the polar opposite of Tim Russert, who seemed like a *genuine* *caring* man.

Thanks Carolyn for sharing this! You must have an incredible Church with a courageous pastor. Bravo for your fellow Church member for her courage in standing up for right. I apologize for coming down hard on Oklahoma voters who voted for James Inhofe. Obviously, Inhofe does not represent ethical Oklahomans like you and members of your Church. I was also lamenting the passing of the good old days when Oklahoma elected real progressive people, like Fred Harris, to the U.S. Senate.

TOMS RIVER, N.J. — A 6-year-old boy is hospitalized in serious condition Tuesday after he was accidentally shot in the head Monday night, apparently by a 4-year-old neighbor with a .22-caliber rifle, police said.

Tell me again why a 4 yo had a gun in his hands?

Dotster, how are the parents of that 4-year old not criminals. How could they allow such easy access to guns? They shouldn’t be allowed to shirk this off as an “accident.” These parents are culpable.

I doubt anyone on this blog will disagree (who knows, maybe someone) but “Hail to the Chief” SUCKS and has ALWAYS SUCKED. Seriously, I just HATE it. YES it needed to be played during PBO’s first term because….duh – OUR PRESIDENT. I would LOVE it if he would pick something else to replace it in his 2nd term. (Green Onions? Ok. But I can think of LOTS of other things.) And then future president’s can pick a song that is in keeping with America’s ideals but based on their ……….umm…whatever, style, story, etc. Oh cr*p: Future President’s. DEEEPRESSING.

    • April 9, 2013 at 9:22 pm

I don’t mind Hail to the Chief as long as it’s played for President Obama. I DESPISED it when it was played for GWB. It’s traditional and short…..I would dislike for POTUS to get any less recognition than previous presidents.

I imagine there’s LOTS of the pomp and regalia he wishes he could do without. But overtly rejecting a lot of that did NOT work out for President Carter and lots of Americans expect that traditional….I’ll be nice and just say “stuff’. Yet PBO has commented that Airforce 1 is very nice. BUT AIRFORCE 1 IS very nice and the president needs it for a host reasons that are practical and symbolic.

In an old movie, 1996, Jack Lemmon and James Garner, in “My Fellow Americans” play ex-presidents from opposite parties. They hate each other, but collaborate for the good of the country. Hillarious. They discuss how they hated Hail to the Chief. Lemons choice of words to sing in his head while he heard it played…. [Russell Kramer’s made-up words to “Hail to the Chief.”]
Russell Kramer: Hail to the chief, he’s the chief and he needs hailing. He is the chief, so everybody hail like crazy. Hail to… that’s more or less how it… I’m Baaack, for a little while. 😎

Alycee, this brings back so many memories! I am so happy that we are remembering all these incredibly talented musicians/artists. Way back in the 1920’s, W.E.B. DuBois wrote a book (which is now forgotten) entitled “The Gift of Black Folks” In it he discussed what Black people had contributed to the United States. Among the many gifts, he listed three main gifts: (1) The gift of story and song; (2) The gift of sweat and brawn; and (3) The gift of the Spirit. Undoubtedly, America has received many gifts from many different cultures and peoples, but it’s undeniable that African Americans have given so much to what became America. What continues to baffle me are white supremacists who still regard African Americans as outsiders and African American culture as outside the main stream culture.

    http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2013/04/mcconnell-use-senate-employees-research-political-attacks-ashley-judd

A secret recording of Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and aides discussing in February how they might attack actor/activist Ashley Judd, then a potential 2014 challenger to McConnell, attracted widespread attention after Mother Jones published it Tuesday morning. Much of the news coverage focused on the McConnell team’s comments about Judd’s religious views and her mental-health history. But the tape might raise ethics questions for McConnell and his staff.

Senate ethics rules prohibit Senate employees from participating in political activities while on government time. But the tape indicates that several of McConnell’s legislative aides, whose salaries are paid by the taxpayer, were involved with producing the oppo research on Judd that was discussed at the February 2 meeting.

      I found THIS mighty interesting!

      b. Bribery Amendments
Congress has also modernized the bribery provision originally enacted in 1853. In its 1962
overhaul of the corruption and conflict-of-interest laws, Congress brought the disparate bribery provisions that then applied to various categories of government officials ‘‘within the purview of one
section and ma[d]e uniform the proscribed acts of bribery, as well as the intent or purpose making
      them unlawful.’’ S. Rep. No. 87–2213, 87th Cong., 2d Sess. 7 (1962), reprinted in 1962 U.S.
Code Cong. & Admin. News 3852, 3856. The new omnibus provision provided for punishment
for any public official, including a Member of Congress, who ‘‘directly or indirectly, corruptly
asks, demands, exacts, solicits, seeks, accepts, receives, or agrees to receive anything of value for
himself or for any other person or entity, in return for . . . being influenced in his performance
of any official act’’ and defined ‘‘official act’’ as ‘‘any decision or action on any question, matter,
cause, suit, proceeding or controversy, which may at any time be pending, or which may by law
be brought before any public official, in his official capacity, or in his place of trust or profit.’’

Corporations aren’t giving them shit tons of $$ for nothing! They expect something in return for their investment! Sounds like a bribe to me!
