Chat Away

Dec. 16, 2012: “Two days after the shootings at Newtown, the President traveled to Connecticut to meet with the victims’ families and give remarks at a prayer vigil. The President spent hours greeting family members. Difficult as that was for everyone, the one moment that helped sooth the pain was when he posed for a photo with the siblings and cousins of Emilie Parker, one of the 20 children who died that day in Newtown. I see both sadness and hope in this photograph, and I know after a lot of tears that day, it meant so much to the President that everyone was able to smile for a moment in this family photo. Thanks to the Parker family for allowing us to show this photograph publicly.” (Pete Souza)

I like the way you think, Don. I have often said it is as if he is the living symbol of what humans can accomplish in balanced development: intelligence, compassion, spirit, and oh well, I might as well say it, fine to look at…. but seriously (I was, quite), to me he represents what we may each achieve. This quality of character gives me hope for the human race. Unless of course, we no longer have an Earth to support us, then none of it will matter. For now, I am grateful he is here, I am thankful so many millions of us were smart enough to elect him as our President, and I will continue to support him as long as I am able to.

That’s right Pamela. I’m going to savor this Presidency no matter what. It’s a once in a lifetime experience. We won’t see another like this in our lifetime. Hopefully our children or grandchildren will live to have the privilege of a similar unique experience we’re now enjoying.

Yes, whenever I start feeling anxious and distraught by the actions and the words of the haters, I resolve to move forward with our gifted President, take courage from the knowledge that he was re-elected by the people who support his vision and, above all, I promise myself that I will always continue to do whatever I can to answer his call for citizen participation.

I feel my own words are just a reflection of the way these changing times are affecting all or many of us, certainly all of us here on TOD: it is within this common bond that we find a way Forward as a Whole, sharing is a natural part of human endeavor. As PBO has reminded us: “Out of many, we are one.” And: “Our stories may be singular, but our destination is shared.” Words do matter, and it is with our words we may help each other along. Love and Light and Blessing all around you, AngelHZ!

I like Harry, but he can be so exasparating at times. Let’s see if there is action to follow up on the words.

        • April 8, 2013 at 4:47 pm

Japa I share in your exasperation, but keep this in mind. Jay Rockefeller, Tim Johnson, and Tom Harkin all retired. That’s WV,SD,IA w/ open seats. Say good by to 2 of those w/ IA & Bruce Braley our best chance. Then you have Kay Hagan-NC, Mark Pryor-AR, Mark Begich-AK, Mary Landrieu-LA and Max Bachus-MT up for re-election. That is 8 seats that D’s could all lose. So I am willing to give Harry Reid as much latitude and he needs in most cases. Last thing we want is Maj. Leader McConnel, effectively ending the last two yrs. of PBO’s agenda. Just something to keep in mind when we all want to throw inanimate objects at Harry.

            • April 8, 2013 at 5:27 pm

I actually think the WH is holding it’s fire until the ’14 midterms. After that I have a premonition that VP Biden is going to walk down to the Senate chamber and exercise the nuclear option…..freeing all Judicial/administrative and legislative backlogs….politics be damned. That may just be a West Wing script, but I been hearing hints from PBO ever since he did that John Stewart interview back in 2010 about reforming the filibuster. I think this will also endear VP Biden to the base if he is planning to run for president…just some random thoughts that have been bubbling in my head for while. Might all just be a whim!

Oh I don’t disagree and I still haven’t gotten over the false start to filibuster reform but at least he is speaking the truth today. You are right that his words need to be followed up with action.

          • 57 57andfemale
            April 8, 2013 at 4:55 pm

Hey, I’m happy to hear the words. Just want to see some action (and truth) behind them.

More than anything, I’m the most upset that he led us to believe he was for comprehensive filibuster reform, and after the fact he said he never intended any such thing. And it appeared to be more about Merkeley ‘overstepping his bounds’. It should not be about personal ego, but the good of the country and the Democratic agenda.

It’s clear that we won’t get anywhere without the nuclear option. Let’s be clear on one thing: Harry and other Dem’s are not ‘preserving’ the filibuster for posterity so that we can use it if we’re ever in the minority. If McConnell gets control of the Senate, the filibuster will be neutered entirely. It’s time to grow up and realize what we’re up against here.

WASHINGTON, April 8 (Reuters) – The U.S. Senate on Monday confirmed former federal prosecutor Mary Jo White as the new head of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the agency tasked with policing Wall Street and writing new rules of the road for financial markets.

White received wide bipartisan support in the Senate thanks to her reputation as a tough former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, where she went after mobsters and terrorists.

Geesh I did not even know she had been thru the hearings yet…..

They had a shiny object to follow: don’t the emoprogs have a problem with her? Didn’t Sherrod Brown make a big deal out of her nomination during the hearings?

She made a ‘too big to fail’-type statement that Sherrod Brown (and other whiny lefties) latched onto. Repubs probably believe she won’t enforce anything, although I doubt that PBO would have nominated her if that were true.

Please let’s try and not buy into the divide and conquer situation that the media, blogs, twitter and facebook is playing out right now. HRC is a Democrat and who knows who will be the nominee come 2016 (personally I’m hoping my MD Governor will be in the mix somewhere) but why are Dems not allowed to support the person they would like to see run in 2016? Granted its early to be thinking about 2016 but our lazy sloppy good for nothing media survives in the pit of drama. They push HRC everyday and everyday it gets a rise out of PBO supporters. I could care less if these people want to support this woman. Sometimes I feel that I have to remind everyone that we WON. Nothing anyone does can change that. They ALL have to deal with PBO like it or not until January 2017. Mitt Romney started running for President in 2012 the moment he lost the 2008 Primary.

Those folks supporting Hillary are not stopping me from supporting the President’s agenda and it only steps on the President’s toes if we allow ourselves to perceive it that way which IMO is exactly what the media is counting on.

President Obama has gained a net +7 points (51/47) in job approval in 3 weeks via. CNN http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2013/images/04/08/rel4a.pdf But watch how the media spins the poll.

    • 76 hopefruit2
      April 8, 2013 at 4:33 pm

CNN is full of bull. For the all the individual questions, they have PBO polling badly (which is what the media will emphasize). There’s no way PBO is polling that badly on individual questions and has a 51% approval. Usually the opposite is true. TeaNN is fooling no one.

      • April 8, 2013 at 4:37 pm

You notice how they worded the ? as ” illegal immigration” instead of say immigration policy. And they added S.S. to the Medicare question w/ no context. That’s why I wanted TOD to see the PDF of the internals and not get riled up.

Hf, CNN is doing what everyone expects of them — lying. The fact that 51 percent of people approve of PBO means they are not listening to the twaddle from CNN or any other cable propagandists. The vast number of Americans do not sit around waiting to hear CNN tell them what to think. If they did, Romney would be president. What does happen when pundits push too much anti-Obama stuff is people start feeling cognitive dissonance–especially the tens of millions of Americans who voted for the president. So instead of the president sinking in their opinion, CNN does. Their ratings go down, the remotes start clicking “off,” and CNN’s meager remaining credibility goes down the tubes.

PBO looks just like Malia in this pic.

  23. April 8, 2013 at 4:44 pm

Here’s my take on the incessant harping by fauxgressive pundits on Pres Obama’s praise of AG Kamala Harris. It is a symptom of a much larger cynical effort afoot to muddy Pres Obama’s personal integrity that has remained intact all these years through all the nastiness. Americans, even opponenets have always vouched for his moral integrity. This is the target of the vampires this 2nd term:

    1. On the AG Kamala Harris nontroversy itself, the beltway women’s organizations like Feministing, Emily’s List and their male stenographers like Jonathan Chait are engaging in what is called “transference”, a term in psychology that illustrates how a powerless group or person unable to respond to the aggressor who hurts them, takes their frustration/anger out on an innocent ally. The women’s organizations have been feckless fighting against the avalanche of cruel GOP legislation targeting women’s rights all over the country.

So they jump on Pres Obama who has been an indefatigable ally & actual mover of women’s rights at the federal level, in order to impress beltway denizens that they are relevant. The volume of their howling betrays how non-representative they are of the majority of women in America. They have joined the vampire cohort in DC & fauxgressive blogs that fundraises off the misery of real women by trampolining on faux outrage like the President’s comments.

    2. There’s a concerted effort by the DC Permagov to neuter Pres Obama before he can fully chisel out his impressive legacy and therefore become a potent political force in the run up to 2014, 2016 elections as well as after the Presidency. That has meant conjuring scandal out of thin air so that Democratic fraidy cats will shun him in their re-election campaigns, just as they ran away from him & Obamacare in 2010.

But why would Progressives hitch their wagon to the wingnut & permagov plot to take down Pres Obama through faux scandal? It’s all about $$$$$. For bloggers, it’s about tapping into hate-energized wingnut eyeballs to increase traffic to their blogs (the enemy of my enemy is my friend type of calculation). Dailykos (esp on SS chained CPI) is at that phase now of welcoming Obama-hate brigade to boost pageviews, just as they fed off “public option & Obama-sellout” rage in the run-up to 2010 & mid 2011.

It might sound divisive but I strongly believe the DLC corporate-worshiping crowd thinks this is a good time to crush the progressive seeds Pres Obama has planted in his coalition. Why? Cuz they see as threatening his new technique of galvanizing Obamacrats pragmatically around core progressive goals minus the dogma of old-style “tax & spend” liberalism.

Pres Obama changed the paradigm of the Democratic party and the corporate Democrats don’t like it one bit. Unfortunately Bill Clinton is at the heart of this drive to restore DLC status quo. Why? Once again cuz of corporate $$$. The DLC don’t think Pres Obama’s freezing out corporate money to Democrats in the run up to 2012 was in their interest. They don’t think they can replicate Pres Obama’s grassroots funding paradigm when he leaves office, so they want to woo back the corporate money machine. And that means clipping Pres Obama’s wings and influence in the party.

We are in a Democratic party low intensity civil war (it’s not just the GOP) over the future of the soul of the party, how it is funded, and who gets to influence the selection of our political candidates. The effort underway to undercut potential Obamacrat candidates in KY or San Francisco mayoral race are examples.

Those of you who filled the OFA survey after the 2012 elections remember there were questions about our desire to run for political office at state, local & federal levels. I understand many declared intent to do so. DLC is miffed by that cuz it means the state Dem parties would have less stranglehold on who gets recruited to run for office. They are asserting their control in quiet and loud ways even as they grumble about OFA not ceding its lists, technology and expertise to the DNC.

These are my observations, and I believe we must fight tooth and nail to stop this concerted effort to neuter Pres Obama. As he said “we are the ones we’ve been waiting for”. So we must guard the change we’ve worked our butts for, then push through the thicket of hate for more people-centered change.

Zizi – thanks for posting this. Your post is front-page material! I agree with everything you say here. And that’s why I get extremely frustrated with some Obama supporters on Twitter who are constantly repeating fauxgressive memes that are not true about PBO cutting SS, and how that is going to be his legacy, etc. etc.,

Instead of succumbing to foolish emotional left punditry, we should be engaged in forceful pushback of these anti-Obama memes – just as we were in the months leading up to the election. There is another election less than 2 years away and we have no business helping the GOP by undermining our President on Twitter and elsewhere.

      • April 8, 2013 at 5:10 pm

Don’t know if WJC himself was involved but the state Dem party hated the Judd potential candidacy. I’m in KY and know the ossified character of our state party. They hate Obama and all things Obama with a passion. They couch it all in the “not traditional to KY” language.

Zizi – this is wonderful insight into these nefarious developments. The fact that they couldn’t use their energy to push forward a positive agenda at the beginning of the President’s second term, and instead, have been growing this division between the Hillary and Biden/other camps, and that they are besmirching the President’s strong record on women (or trying to), speaks volumes about who these rascals really are. They don’t actually intend to do anything for the common man/woman/child. They are in it for themselves.

I believe people like Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and others, are in it for the right reasons. But these establishment folks – rotten to the core, with egos to boot.

And you’re absolutely right about them trying to diminish the President in advance of the 2014 elections, so that he’s not as powerful a draw – or worse yet – is rejected by the cowardly candidates.

Sometimes, I just wonder how these people sleep at night.

The monstrous Westboro Baptist Church is picketing ‘fag enabler’ Roger Ebert’s funeral.

Who is this Christian God they follow?

There will be great and powerful pushback against this disgusting charade by Westboro. Ebert was beloved by many and they will not look kindly on this outrage. Westboro is stepping way out of its league with this one.

I knew Roger many, many years ago. He had a crush on a waitress who worked at the restaurant where I worked part time in the 70’s and he would nurse coffee or a bowl of soup for hours. After the lunch rush, I’d pour myself a cup of coffee and we’d chat. He was warm, real, accessible, and very, very smart. He turned that talent toward progressive issues and gave meaningful, poetic voice to our concerns, our hopes, our dreams, and our vision of America and the world.

He was a good man who did good work and good deeds. The smearing of him will only highlight the hellish ugliness of Westboro that wraps itself in its deranged view of Christianity.

Why does this hate group called Westboro Church exist, and who is funding them?

They are funded by similar nut jobs. Unfortunately, there are a lot of them.

I did hear that they didn’t show at Roger’s funeral. Probably afraid teh gay would infect them in the sinful city of Chicago.

Or they got lost. Or fell in a pothole. Now that would be poetic justice!

      I read they were no-shows .

Chicago Sun-Times reporter Stefano Esposito says members of the Westboro Baptist Church were no-shows at Ebert’s funeral:

14……Ensign(sp) from ID had joined in.

I don’t think that they can pull it off if there are 60 senators to allow the motion of Gun Safety to proceed.
