Good morning. I always love toon roundups–helps to begin the day with a smile. I’ve spent the last two days helping MIL move FROM her retirement facility back to her home. She couldn’t stand it and at 93 she said she deserved to do what she wants. No one could disagree with her and she’s in good health and has lots of helpful neighbors. Meanwhile, every muscle in my body is screaming.

    • April 6, 2013 at 8:52 am

Same for my MIL last year, at 88 and after spending a year in the retirement facility. She didn’t like being around all those old folks and wanted back into her own home in her old neighborhood. No one disagreed either, and she’s able to care for herself as well. cookeman and his sister thought she’d love it and would ease their worries of her living alone. Not!

And you know, Cookemom, I’d feel exactly the same way. Who wants to see only old people all the time. When she finally got back to her own home, she was smiling so much, I knew she had made the right decision. She hasn’t been that happy since the day she left.

My aunt stayed in her own home (where she moved when she got married in 1939!), by herself and without assistance, until she was 94 years old! When she moved to the retirement residence, she used to call me and say it was like a five-star hotel and did I know they picked up her laundry for her? Ha! But she hung onto her own home for dear life, as long as she could … part of what keeps ’em going is also their own routine (what some of the rest of us fight and consider dull). She outlived her three younger siblings. My mother used to always say my aunt’s longevity was because she never had to go out and work for a living like the rest of them and “walk on concrete every day”!

Amk, since we we on the road the last couple of days, what I did see is a lot of highlighting of sequester ills on the front pages of local newspapers. And USA Today had a front page story yesterday on the impact of the Sequester on airport safety and long lines for customs check-ins. I think it’s slowly penetrating people’s consciousness. Now they just have to connect all of these troubles with the Republicans. That’s where our Dem candidates for Congress had better get moving.

Good morning, all. It’s a bright and sunny morning here. I will be leaving shortly for a mass rally at Boston’s Faneuil Hall. OFA is joining SEIU, MIRA and a number of pro-immigrant and pro-reform organizations to make the case for comprehensive immigration reform with a path to citizenship. We will rally at Faneuil Hall and then march to the Federal Building. I am looking forward to getting together with a lot of volunteers and friends from the 2012 campaigns for President Obama and Elizabeth Warren. This rally will demonstrate that people from all ethnic and economic backgrounds are united in their belief that America can still be a nation of immigrants and a nation of law.

The doom and gloom from the media about the job numbers. We all know that if the other side were willing to work with this President this economy would be stronger. But instead of working with him their plan has been since this President walk into the Oval Office, since they took over the House is to obstruct, filibuster, do nothing. It’s ashame that the welfare of this country wasn’t put before party politics.

I see that some people here want congressional democrats to go after Republicans, and really drive home the message that the Sequester was all the Republicans fault?
Well, not when you have Absolutist Democrats run to the Radio/Tv airwaves and blame this President for his budget.
    It confuses People.
You see, this President has to fight the Crazy republicans and the Purists in our own Party.

      April 6, 2013 at 10:20 am

Yup, the story of his presidency. While the thugs’ goose-stepism is annoying, one can’t deny it’s effective. All the narratives since Nov 2008 have been driven by the rw and the dems can learn a few things from the wingers.

    • 53 joyfulmeme
      April 6, 2013 at 12:44 pm

Yep. The Dems will go after the President before they go after the Republicans. The Republicans give them so much ammunition that is completely overlooked. I think before they go to the media with their so called concerns, they should discuss with the President or his people so that they understand what he is doing.

Needless to say, the Rs will not come half way as long as there are taxes on the the table. So more likely than not, nothing will happen on the budget front. So the Dem should just relax and let this play out. They will have even more ammunition and more evidence that the Rs don’t really want to govern. Their primary mission is obstruction to the detriment of the country.

Ahead of expected votes on bills to reduce gun violence, members of Congress this week and last got an earful from their constituents on the issue. ,,,

Congress returns from its recess next week, and the Senate should take up a gun bill soon. The White House, meanwhile, is continuing its full court press for action.

On Monday, [President] Obama travels to Hartford, Conn., where he’ll meet with families affected by gun violence. Then on Tuesday, Vice President Joe Biden will hold an event with law enforcement officials at the White House. On Wednesday, First Lady Michelle Obama will talk about reducing gun violence in her hometown of Chicago.

Good Morning all…..well it seems NC is getting quite a bit of publicity…Rachel two nights in a row and MHP getting ready to discuss……Honestly, maybe I have lived in a bubble but NC did not use to be like this. I use to turn my nose up to “some” southern states for their backwardness. Having been born and reared in a small northeastern NC town, I was never exposed to the “likes” of people who are now running our state. It has really, really shocked me……My question…….when did this start?……Before or after PBO?….Was it school desegration…..or…. the rise of the Evangelical movement in NC…or the influx of Hispanics that have settled in our State…or a combination of all? I personally feel that the evangelical movement is mostly to blame and it exploded about l5 to 20 yrs ago. My children, who are in their 40’s all attended public desegrated schools with no problems, friends of all races. They were never exposed to evangelical churches, even the Southern Baptist church in our town was mainstream(at that time)…..My Episcopal church was mixed races, and that was considered normal. My red head, fair skinned DIL was a black USA congressman’s assistant, and that seemed normal. We have top rated universities in our State, Duke, UNC, Wake Forest, NC State, Davidson….top rated hospitals(even Ted Kennedy came to Duke), Research Triangle, Banking headquarters, Maya Angleau, and so on and so on….WE ARE NOT BACKWARDS IN NC…until NOW……..What happened?…..Help me understand how people of such low intelligence and moral values are now in power?

    • 89 jacquelineoboomer
      April 6, 2013 at 11:56 am

So sorry you’re living through that, kathryn! I have no answers, but multiply your angst times the angst of good people in all 50 states, and (hoping to be considered one of ’em), at least our eyes are wide open to the “low intelligence and low moral values” crowd … again. They keep rearing their ugly heads in our beautiful country, every couple of decades. I don’t get any of it, either.

At least your kids and my kid (and grandkids) are escaping most of that hatred at home, and in their integrated schools – where they have friends of all races. Something’s gotta give … I just hope it isn’t the complete, awful destruction of the underpinnings of our society as a whole.

    • 90 Bill
      April 6, 2013 at 12:00 pm

Kathryn, I think the main source of the problem is Art Pope, the billionaire heir. He is a committed idealogue who is using the evangelicals and racists in the state to promote his Ayn Rand beliefs. He also is using ambitious politicians who have no beliefs but their own selfish goals such as Governor McCrory to advance his vile agenda. As you know McCrory appointed Pope as the state budget director. Someone else said that would be the the same as Romney appointing a Koch brother as head of the Office of Management and Budget. I do not understand why there is not more outrage. It truely is a major story of what is happening in our country.

      • April 6, 2013 at 12:09 pm

        Wasn’t Jesse Helms from NC?

I remember being shocked to see a fundraising pamphlet from him to my father (WWII USN vet) in the San Diego area.

So, money, yes, but also tradition of sorts.

But we outside your state love your wonderful progressives such as the late Andy Griffith and James Taylor.

There was a wonderful article about James Taylor in one of your local publications just before the DNC in Charlotte last year. Was really a heartwarming story.

        • 92 Bill
          April 6, 2013 at 12:25 pm

Jesse Helms was from NC, but he was a hate monger who made his name as a radio personality when integration was an issue. Helms did not have the money behind him that Pope does, and he was more concerned with race than business. NC has had a progressive side dating back to the 60’s led by Governor Terry Sanford who promoted the Research Triangle as a public / private endeavor. He also promoted civil rights. Pope is not so much a racist as he is using them to promote his Ayn Rand economic ideas.

Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) has pulled his name off of an NRA-backed bill that purports to strengthen background checks for gun purchases, following reports that the measure would make it easier for individuals who were involuntarily committed to mental institutions to obtain firearms. Sens. Mark Begich (D-AK) and Mark Pryor (D-AR) are the two remaining Democrats still associated with the measure, which is being touted by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) as a bipartisan approach to strengthening the existing background check system.
On Friday, the Washington Post reported that Blumenthal was withdrawing his support, “saying in an interview that he was no longer comfortable with the bill because of ‘serious unintended consequences‘ related to provisions governing the mentally ill.” The NICS Reporting Improvement Act (S. 480), which was “drafted in consultation with the NRA,” clarifies existing regulations prohibiting mentally ill people from purchasing weapons from federally licensed dealers — the bill specifies that people who are incompetent to stand trial, plead innocent by reason of insanity in a criminal trial, or pose an imminent danger to themselves or others must be included in the federal background check database used by federally licensed gun sellers. But it defines that term narrowly and would allow patients who had been involuntarily committed and treated for mental illness to pass a federal background check and purchase guns.

Good Morning/Afternoon Chips and my TOD Family. Checking in to make sure everyone is up and moving all those ‘goodness specials’ into your spaces today.

We are going to be fine, and we will continue to make sure that we have our beautiful president’s back in moving forward.

((((((( Lots of hugs filled with lots of love to my Chips and all who helps our beautiful Chips out here))))))))

I love you all and now with this sinus headache trying to destroying my common sense about driving to get a few items for my day, I am going to crush this sucker. Can’t keep this cocoa butter long legs senior down for too long. It is a hellish pain in my head, but thinking on those things that are lovely, pure, honest, kind, and hopeful. ((((( Love my TOD Family.)))))HZ
