…So, what’s next for Harris? With re-election to a second term virtually assured in 2014 — this is California after all and Harris is a Democrat), most people expect her to move up the statewide political food chain in either 2016 or 2018. …

    * Governor… * Senate… * President: There is a theory that Harris could make the big leap to run for president in 2016. … * Obama Administration: Harris’ law and order credentials could be appealing for President Obama if/when Attorney General Eric Holder decides to leave his post. …

Anniebella, I am with you in feeling this way. But I also think PBO is hoping and working hard towards us, all of us, staying involved, making our voices heard, taking a stand. I know that is what he means by Change: not just letting other people speak for us…. I know he means that is what true democracy is all about. I don’t want to let him down…. Personally, I cannot yet begin to picture a world where PBO is not President, or Michella FLOTUS, it does not yet exist. I will wait. A lot can happen in this next three years, and we do not know what the Earth has planned.

The real question is why is SS even being included in the discussions? It does not contribute one penny to the debt. By allowing it to even be out there, there is a sense give to the public that it does contribute. Even Reagan knew not to include SS in any discussion of the national debt.

Does SS need to be strengthened for down the road? Yes. Could Chained CPI be part of that discussion? Yes. But it shouldn’t even be part of the discussion now.

And trust me. Two things will happen or at least one of these two things. Either the GOP will use this to make themselves the defenders of SS or they will use this as leverage to dismantle it more later. Simply because it has been tied to the debt, which it need never have been.

Japa, President Obama has offered this same exact bill to the Republicans before and they turned it down, they can’t help it it’s who they are. And no, I’m not blindly following President Obama, I just know that whatever his plans are they usually turn out right.

        • 47 japa21
          April 5, 2013 at 1:50 pm

Don, I know this. And I was upset SS was included then and I am upset now. It doesn’t matter if they will turn it down. It is that a connection has been made between SS and the debt that doesn’t exist. PBO is a long term thinker, yet I am not sure he sees the potential for a negative outcome on this.

And I will not turn my back on him due to this. But I can still disagree with what he is doing in this regard.

          • 48 Nena20409
            April 5, 2013 at 2:46 pm

SS was tapped in for the 1st time pretending to issue IOUs on Oct 31st 1981. Tip O’Neil made that possible. Today, SS is owed over $4.5T……not one Dime has been paid back. This is not a good thing. Pres Obama wants to get things done. I get that. However……we should work harder and get Dems back in control of the House of Rep…..maintain the senate and them revise this should it ever pass. Dems have got to stop playing the righties’ games.

        April 5, 2013 at 1:57 pm

I think the answer is that the whole point of a “Grand Bargain” is to do a bunch of things that are hard to get done individually. You do this by including a bunch of things that one side likes and the other side hates, and vice versa. There is no rule that says that bunch of things has to be related. That’s why it’s called a “Grand Bargain” and not a “Debt Reduction” bill. The insistence that it all be related seems artificial to me. Congress includes completely off-topic things in bills all the time.

One of the basic “Obama Rules” is to Take the Long View. And in the long view, Social Security needs to be tweaked or else at some point decades from now, there will need to be a wrenching correction (something like 25% reduction in benefits, all at once). I think that he feels that by tweaking it now, we can minimize the pain and disruption, as people gradually adjust to chained CPI. In other words, he sees the iceberg miles away, and he wants to shift course a few degrees (the passengers won’t even notice), rather than wait until the last possible moment and try to make a drastic turn (and maybe even fail to avoid disaster). Who knows if we will someday have a Dem majority in Congress to raise the cap? If we do, they can reverse chained CPI at the same time. In the mean time, we can take the opportunity in PBO’s second term to do something hard that avoids disaster in the long term. A safety net for the safety net.

Lastly, if a Grand Bargain with chained CPI passes, it won’t be without Republicans’ help. They can try to pin it on Dems, but it will blowback on them. If it doesn’t pass, who cares what they say? Anyone who pays attention knows the difference between Democratic budgets and Republican (Ryan) budgets. Those who don’t pay attention, well they won’t be paying attention, to the Dems or the Repubs.

        • April 5, 2013 at 2:10 pm

          Excellent, cogent summary.

And — “Those who don’t pay attention, well they won’t be paying attention, to the Dems or the Repubs.”

I have to chime in on this one and I agree with Japa21 and Cookemom. Republicans controlled the House, Senate and the White House, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006…why didn’t they fix it. They expanded Medicare with the pharmaceutical legislation.

W.H.: Uranium removed from Czech Republic
By DONOVAN SLACK | 4/5/13 9:26 AM EDT
Some 150 pounds of highly-enriched uranium has been safely removed from the Czech Republic, making it the 10th country since 2009 to have removed all nuclear-weapon grade uranium, the White House announced Friday.

The uranium was taken to Russia, where it will be down-blended to a lower grade strong enough for use in nuclear power plants but too weak for weapons.

“This achievement comes on the anniversary of President Obama’s remarks in Prague on April 5, 2009, where he stated that nuclear terrorism remains our greatest threat,” National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said in a statement. “The President called on the world to act with a sense of purpose and without delay to secure vulnerable nuclear material.

“The United States and the global community have responded with an unprecedented effort that has secured thousands of kilograms of HEU and plutonium, enough for dozens of nuclear weapons.”

The removal from the Czech Republic was a joint, multi-year effort by the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration, the Czech Republic’s Nuclear Research Institute, Russia’s Federal Atomic Energy Agency, and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

This is the real Toon here 🙂

Of course, I have said this before – repeatedly:

“Volgens het Duitse Ifo-instituut, het Franse statistisch instituut Insee en het Italiaanse Istat groeit de economie licht, omdat de export naar de Verenigde Staten en naar de opkomende markten gaat toenemen.” [ De Volkskrant ]

“According to the German Ifo Institure, the French statistical institure Insee and the Italian Istat the [EU] economy will grow lightly [in the second quarter], because the *export to the United States* and to upcoming markets will increase.”

Especially in a country like the Netherlands, where economic growth is driven mainly by exports, the (right-wing) government can just sit on its hands, wait until *other* economies get their act together and then reap the rewards ….

I’m not saying Hayes never says or does anything meaningful or helpful. Same thing with MHP. But I have precious few hours left in my day to waste them sorting through the likes of guests like Sirota and Hayes finding Rand Paul ‘the most interesting politician’.

Yardarm, It’s really sad that Ms. Zerlina decided to completely twist the President’s gracious (and by the way very accurate) complement to AG Kamala Harris to make it look like he is a sexist who denigrates women. As far as I am concerned, President Obama’s record on respecting women, and dealing with issues that advance the rights and interests of women, is unparalleled. Only a person with a nefarious agenda can accuse President Obama of being anti-women just because paid a complement to a very smart, able, and dedicated woman who also happens to be a very beautiful.

NEWARK, N.J. — A former Rutgers University employee who made public the video that led to the basketball coach’s dismissal and athletic director’s resignation has filed a whistleblower lawsuit against the university.

Eric Murdock filed the lawsuit Friday in state court.

He claims the university violated the state’s employee protection act and his contract.

Murdock was director of player development for the basketball program. His contract wasn’t renewed in July.

He says he was let go after a dispute with Coach Mike Rice about skipping a camp and, ultimately, because he complained about Rice’s mistreatment of players.

Murdock says he first gave the university video in November showing Rice pushing and yelling gay slurs at players. The public airing of the videos this week led to Rice’s firing and the resignation of Athletic Director Tim Pernetti
