It’s Gardening Time!

18 *****

AP: The first lady on Thursday planted lettuce and other crops in her garden on the South Lawn of the White House, with an assist from schoolchildren from Washington, D.C., and several school districts around the country. Two varieties of wheat were planted for the first time: club wheat and bread wheat.

Other crops now growing in the garden are spinach, kale, Swiss chard, endive, potatoes, radishes, garlic, fennel, broccoli, cauliflower, collard greens and herbs, along with raspberries, blueberries, strawberries and an apple tree. The first lady personally planted rows of wheat, spinach and kale, with help from a few students. Other students planted the remaining crops, with an assist from White House staff members. Also helping were military veterans in training for careers in sustainable agriculture.

The garden so far has produced more than 3,000 pounds of food. The White House gives some away to a local soup kitchen.

Jay Carney Catches Fire On Air Force One, Blasts Media For Buying Into ‘BS’

Whatever they’re putting in Jay Carney‘s birthday cake, I want some. During a gaggle aboard Air Force One today, the just-47 White House Press Secretary woke up a sleepy press corps with a rant about fact-checking Republican talking points that, relatively speaking, nearly veered into Sam Kinison territory. Quoting from a recent MarketWatch commentary, Carney told the press “do not buy into the BS” about the Obama spending record, and that “doing so is a sign of sloth and laziness.”

You are right, LP, that Michael Huffington is Arianna’s ex. husband. Except that he ran for the U.S. Senate and not for the governor. It was Arianna Huffington who ran for governor after Gray Davis was recalled. If I am not mistaken, I think she received less than 5% of the vote.

Ct. Gov. Malloy signs sweeping gun control legislation today, “the toughest in the nation”. It had to be emotional and satisfying for Gov. Malloy who was there at Sandy Hook to witness the horror of the immediate aftermath and painfully waited with anxious parents and was one who had to tell many of them the horrific news that their young child did not survive.

There’s been a couple of short clips on our local news, but our anchor (local NBC and by far, the most watched in the entire viewing area) is doing a full report on the 11:00 news. • 40 Anya
      April 4, 2013 at 9:33 pm

Please and please don’t taunt a woman with her horrific experience. It has nothing to do with what she believes. Keep reminding her of a horrific thing that happened to her is not going to help anyone. If we cannot ignore every idiot who takes a statement out of context or says something stupid then we should challenge their words without bringing into the discussion the person’s experience with rape.

      • 41 anniebella
        April 4, 2013 at 9:39 pm

Please stop making false accusations. No one is taunting her about anything. And she’s not just some random “idiot” who says something stupid. She is someone who was thought to be a respected journalist, and many of us (myself included) defended her when she was viciously attacked on Twitter by a FOX viewer. If her experiences are so traumatic that they cause her to misinterpret a routine compliment from a mutual friend as a threat or harassment, then she should do the responsible thing and get some help to further address these issues. This is not a joke – it’s a serious matter.

If I was John Kerry I’d just donate almost all of my salary. He’s more than comfortable in that area but I appreciate the gesture.

      • April 4, 2013 at 9:03 pm

I’m sure he would, but then that would put pressure on other gov. staff who are not as well off. Actually, the constitution prohibits the President from receiving his full salary, which is why he was not subject to a pay decrease.

          April 4, 2013 at 11:45 pm

Thank you for that reply. Sort of discouraging to see people attacking or finding fault in anything this decent human being does. PBO chose Kerry for a reason, and it would be nice if our President’s own supporters would see that. As Senator, he was very supportive of the little people aka the small business, middle, working class people.

Not a bad idea, but why single out Kerry? To be fair Hagel has money too, but nobody is attacking him. He and his wife have helped out little people before. This was one of many things.

Love AG Holder. Good for SOS Kerry. Bravo, President Obama and SECDEF Hagel.

These are gestures through which they wish to not only figuratively bond with their beleaguered employees, but also politically call attention to the Republican congresspukes for the sequester … and for their total lack of empathy for furloughed government employees or anyone else who isn’t one of them, across America.

I’m not saying this is “the answer,” but it’s a very good gesture and shows good will and compassion for others, which are supposed to be values we should all be espousing.

It’s good, but wish that people would stop bashing Kerry for not donating his whole salary. It’s not fair to the PBO or Holder and Hagel. And people need to do some research on Senator’s records before making judgements. JAO

It’s not just Kerry that people have an opinion about. I was emailing a relative (an Obama supporter, who’s worked to get him elected and re-elected) about the President’s turning back 5% of his salary, and my relative responded she “just wished it were 10%.”

Some people, including President Obama’s supporters, are just plain nuts.

Perhaps I made a semi-over the top entrance to the Obama Diary, apologies. I am civil person like PBO and the cool dude in your avitar.

Progressives are generous and big-hearted (I know my mother was).

It amazed me how he kept his spirits up despite the daunting challenges that he courageously confronted in recent years.

He never hesistated to tweet about food and conversation, both of which were denied him, but which he gladly shared with those who could enjoy.

Here’s a nice tribute to how tweeting kept him going:

Three US justice officials who tackled white supremacist prison gangs have been killed. Originally formed to fight other gangs, these groups are now accused of a range of criminal activities on the outside, from drug smuggling and kidnapping to murder. How did neo-Nazi prisoners set up huge criminal networks?

With skinhead haircuts and swastika tattoos, their leaders are buried deep within the brutal confines of America’s penitentiaries.

But three murders in less than three months have shone a spotlight on far-right prison gangs, whose empire of drug-dealing, racketeering and murder extends well beyond the walls and barbed wire around them.

The bodies of Kaufman County, Texas, district attorney Mike McLelland, 63, and his wife Cynthia, 65, were found on Saturday.

McLelland’s deputy, Mark Hasse, was killed in January, on the same day it was announced that their office was pursuing a racketeering case against the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas (ABT), a white supremacist group formed in Texan jails.

Police are investigating whether their deaths were linked with the killing of Tom Clements, Colorado’s head of prisons.

The chief suspect in that case, ex-convict Evan Ebel, is said to have belonged to the 211 Crew, another violent racist prison gang. Official documents state his body was covered with Nazi-themed tattoos. Ebel died in a shoot-out two days after Clements.

While the killings remain unsolved, they have focused attention on the increasingly dangerous white supremacist networks formed in prison.

This is what happens when you have prisons for hire. Privatizing the prisons are a drain on our economy, but also breeds corruption.

it’s just going to take more time for the white privilege to get weeded out of our political process. president obama has been the perfect person to lead this charge though!

of course there was the time he beat clark kellogg in a come from behind win too, and many others 3’s drained in front of audiences. “the news” makes sure no one knows about those time, since they can never let president obama be seen in a good light whatsoever. they are paid by billionaires to keep democrats/liberals out of office. nothing more, nothing less.

I want to feel my earth turn over, baby
    In this hardened winter ground
Feel my earth turn over, darlin’
    Till’ I’m rootless and unbound

I want to feel my body tremble
When there’s no one else around
Just this cool, clear water runnin’
In this love that I’ve found

    Hey baby
    See how it can be
Every time you reveal yourself to me
    I’ll come runnin’

I want to feel myself go under, baby
    Where the deepest river bleeds
I want to feel it pull me under, darlin’
Until it drops me to my knees

I want to know that I can find you
When there’s no more eyes to see
In this cool, clear water runnin’
    You’ll come runnin’ to me

    Hey baby
All my life I have known there’s something more
A love to blind me like the sun
Deep in dreams, I will wash upon your shore
Now I know that you’re the one

When I fee lmy baby callin’
    It’s like a whisper in
And when the softest rain is fallin’, darlin’
I will crumble in your hand

And when all that’s left is wonder
    And no need to understand
Well this cool, clear water runnin’
