Thanks for the great threads today, Chips!!!

Would be worthwhile constantly to remind everyone that the GOP insurgency remains the single most effective terrorist organization attacking America, daily!

    Off-topic, but found this interesting:
On Tuesday, the City Council of Lancaster, California approved a mandate that most new homes must produce solar energy. This is the first such mandate in the nation.

Lancaster is in the Mojave high-desert and gets about 400 days of sunshine a year (joke).

Looks like Californians are finally waking up, no doubt thanks to the encouragement of our progressive, Jesuit Governor Jerry Brown.

No doubt Meta can shed more light on this initiative by the city of Santa Clara.

Love the idea of enabling free Wi-Fi when swapping out electric meters:
“Here’s a clever idea: Piggyback the installation of connected, smart utility meters with free Wi-Fi service for outdoor use. That’s exactly what the City of Santa Clara is doing.”

Americans has their priorities all wrong. We live in a country where people are paid millions play a game and corporations reap billions while our children can’t get a decent education and teachers who teach our most precious children are paid a paupers salary.

    http://www.nybooks.com/blogs/nyrblog/2013/jan/21/dumb-america/

But the current South is willing to cut off its own nose to show contempt for the government. Governor Rick Scott of Florida turned down more than $2 billion in federal funds for a high-speed rail system in Florida that would have created jobs and millions of dollars in revenues, just to show he was independent of the hated federal government. In this mood, his forebears would have turned down TVA. People across the South are going even farther than Scott, begging to secede again from the Union. Packer notes that the tea is cooling in parties across the rest of the nation, but seems to be fermenting to a more toxic brew in the South. No one needs better health care more than the South, but it fights it off so long as Obama is offering it, its governors turning down funds for Medicaid. This is a region that rejects sex education, though its rate of teenage pregnancies is double and in places triple that of New England. It fights federal help with education, preferring to inoculate its children against science by denying evolution.

    snip/

Tradition dies hard, hardest among those who cannot admit to the toll it has taken on them. That is why the worst aspects of the South are resurfacing under Obama’s presidency. It is the dignity. That a black should have not merely rights but prominence, authority, and even awe—that is what many Southerners cannot stomach. They would let him ride on the bus, or get into Ivy League schools. But he must be kept from the altar; he cannot perform the secular equivalent of taking the Lord in his hands. It is the dignity.

This is the thing that makes the South the distillation point for all the fugitive extremisms of our time, the heart of Say-No Republicanism, the home of lost causes and nostalgic lunacy. It is as if the whole continent were tipped upward, so that the scattered crazinesses might slide down to the bottom. The South has often been defeated. Now it is defeating itself.

If I am not mistaken. most people in the Arizona territory during the Civil War were pro- Southern States’ session. Texas is definitely part of the South, and was one of the 11 Confederate States that seceded from the United States. Obviously, North Dakota was not part of the South. I am not sure what to make of ND’s current right wing extremism on issues like abortion and gun safety.

      March 29, 2013 at 10:09 pm

It’s the people in the south who don’t feel this way that I feel sorry for. There are many decent, common sense people in southern states who don’t want their state’s economies to suffer and who would welcome an extension of Medicaid and other sensible government programs. In some states they might even be a majority, but they don’t organize and don’t vote in sufficient numbers. That’s why the crazies elect the governors and state legislators who inflict actual harm on the population. I could care less what happens to the racist ignoramuses, but they take good people down with them.

We all respect her. And as a female, I would not want any female addressed that way, no matter how wicked Liz Cheney is. I have no doubt that you can come up with a much better description for the Dick Cheney offspring. Please, have it removed. It is not being righteous, judgmental or a slap down. Just a friendly request.

To ask is not a smack down. Nothing you did is deserving of any punishment……just a friendly request from a fellow TODer, that is all.

But woe is me, it is she. Please God, we have had enough of her and her father. Be benevolent to us and take them away, please? P.S. He would have been a FORMIDABLE opponent to George Bush. But the media killed his candidacy when they HAMMERED Joe, OVER and OVER again, for a little mistake he had make. He was accused of plagiarism because he forgot to cite the author of one of the quotes he used. He had used the quote in the past AND cited the author. So this was not the big thing the media made it out to be.

The media did the same thing to Howard Dean in 2004. Remember the “Dean scream” that the media played non-stop on tv?

EWWWW!!!!!!!!!! Jim Carrey: Fox News ‘A Media Colostomy Bag That Has Begun To Burst At The Seams’
    Source: Huffingtonpost.com

Jim Carrey has some harsh words for Fox News. Carrey released a statement on Friday blasting the conservative news network as “a media colostomy bag that has begun to burst at the seams.”

Carrey’s issue with Fox News stems from the response to his recent anti-gun lobby video “Cold Dead Hand,” produced in conjunction with Funny or Die.

Our tennis hero, Vijay Amirtaraj, often says, both the williams girls never get the credit due from the tennis establishment. Small minded pricks.

        • March 29, 2013 at 9:57 pm

Oh, I loved Vijay Amritraj, a natural-born tennis genius!

The coverage of the Williams has been despicable over the years. Generally, coverage of women’s sport is embarrassing any way, but the snide-ness of the coverage they’ve received, the constant focus on anything but their talent or achievements, and consistent refusal to acknowledge their brilliance, has been a sight to behold.

At least Tiger’s brilliance has been hailed, although begrudgingly in plenty of quarters. Although, I still laugh at the notion that we should now judge him by his nocturnal activities. Funny, they don’t apply that standard to too many other sportsmen. (And Phil Mickelson is a ‘God’, despite being a Grade A dick).

🙂 Absolutely bizarrely, LP, I was on the tennis team when I was a teen-type person, which said a whole lot more about the lack of talent available to our coach than my abilities. Put it this way: I was no Martina. My best weapon was my backhand, but only because my grip was so weird the ball sliced in to the middle of next week when it landed. It was kind of like a table tennis shot. My serve was extraordinary, in a truly awful kind of way, and my volleys usually ended up in my own face. But, you know, I shouldn’t boast!

When I was a teen – sometime last century – I was on the tennis team. In later years a friend (whose mother was the coach) told me the only reason I was on the team was because her mother wouldn’t put her own children (my friend included) on the team.

So all those years I thought I was tennis player extraordinaire – what a let down.

      Alycee – I LOVE THIS!!

I’m not a bumper sticker person, but I’ll give them some $$ for this. I’ll give it away, I don’t care. As long as we get RID of Tom “Cut it” Corbett!

I wasn’t either until Obama’08. I am SOOOOOOOOOOOO thankful that OFA used vinyl stickers. My grandson (age 6) was visiting on spring break right before the ’08 primary. I received my bulk order of stickers — about 5 or 6 different types; he asked if he could put stickers on my car — I said “yes.” Didn’t think to say “one of each!” He had my car covered! Fortunately, he had stacked the backers neatly under a rock (it was windy), so we were able to remove them on replace the backers. When asked why he did that? He replied that when the package arrived I said “MY stickers are here” so he thought the were all for me! Didn’t occur to him that I purchased them to give away.

My husband was a Navy Corpsman between 1970-1974. We were married in 1971. He was attached to the Marines at Camp LeJuene, N.C. almost three of those four years. He trained in Guantanamo Bay (Gitmo) to prepare to ship out to ‘Nam. Thank God, his platoon was not called To go. Thank you to the men and women who did serve in Vietnam. We owe you for our lives we live today. If only America could learn from history. A classmate of ours had an older brother, a Navy pilot. In 1965 his plane was shot down and he was killed in 1965. The wall is one trip I would like to take to find his name. Forty years ago today, I cried all day long, happy I was watching you come home. My hubby’s oldest brother did serve in Vietnam; fortunately he came home safe and sound. There was a draft and many of you had no choice but to serve. We will never forget. Never! A grateful Nation honors you.

Hispanic group to GOP congressmen: Watch your language

    By Cameron Joseph – (01/28/13)

    ————————————–

“Tone and rhetoric will be key in the days and weeks ahead as both liberals and conservatives lay out their perspectives. Please consider these tonally sensitive messaging points as you discuss immigration, regardless of your position,” Hispanic Leadership Network Executive Director Jennifer Korn writes.

Many Republican operatives have been as or more worried about their party’s rhetoric on immigration and immigrants than their actual policy positions, and there have been some concerted private efforts to convince immigration hard-liners to be more careful in their rhetoric, even if they don’t change their positions at all. This memo shows exactly how to approach that messaging battle and try to unify the GOP while finding ways to attack Democrats.

Confederate flag at old NC Capitol coming down

By MICHAEL BIESECKER — Associated Press

    ——————————-

“The history of the Confederate battle flag, how it was designed and formulated, how it has been used through the years, clearly states that it is a flag of white supremacy,” Goldfield said. “I know current Sons of Confederate Veterans would dispute that, saying ‘Hey, I’m not a racist.’ But the fact remains that the battle flag was used by a country that had as its foundation the protection and extension of human bondage.”

The NAACP’s Barber said the McCrory administration eventually made the right call, but questioned how the decision to hang the flag was made in the first place.

“A flag should represent a banner of unity, not division,” Barber said. “A substantive symbol and sign of our best history, not our worse. We cannot deny history but neither can we attempt to revision it in a way that glorifies the shameful and attempts to make noble that which is ignoble.”
