Haaretz:  The U.S. president’s speech in Jerusalem redefines what it means to be a centrist in Israel. We deserve a leader like him. For Barack Obama to come to Jerusalem, and speak to Israeli students and talk persuasively of the possibility of a secure and peaceful future, for him to do that and garner a roaring ovation of approval, he would have to have given one hell of a speech.

He did. This was the speech that these young Israelis not only needed but wanted to hear. A speech that radically redefined centrism in Israel, bringing it down to extraordinary common denominators in directions Israelis have learned to think of as diametrically opposed.

He spoke of security and peace as inextricably and necessarily linked, not a narrow choice between options, but a conscious choice for both. They roared.

Obama: Peace Is The Only Path To True Security

Jerusalem Post:  Directing his remarks to the primarily young crowd at the International Convention Center in Jerusalem, Obama urged them to push for peace, saying that only when the people demand action do the leaders act. “Peace is necessary. Indeed, it is the only path to true security,” he said, and stressed that the only way to achieve peace is through negotiations. He urged Israelis to shift from relying on defensive practices, such as the border fence and Iron Dome missile defense system, to forging permanent peace by solving the problem once and for all.

“Peace must be made among peoples, not just governments. No one step can change overnight what lies in the hearts and minds of millions. But progress with the Palestinians is a powerful way to begin, while sidelining extremists who thrive on conflict and division,” he said. He also encouraged his listeners to put themselves in the Palestinians’ shoes.  “It is not fair that a Palestinian child cannot grow up in a state of her own, and lives with the presence of a foreign army that controls the movements of her parents every single day.

Has Obama Turned A Generation Of Voters Into Lifelong Democrats?

Molly Ball:  Paul Ryan had a vision for the youth vote in 2012. In his speech accepting the Republican vice-presidential nomination, the Wisconsin congressman imagined legions of recent college graduates forced to “live out their 20s in their childhood bedrooms, staring up at fading Obama posters and wondering when they can move out and get going with life.” Ryan was sure those kids had recovered from their passing Obama fever and would either stay home or vote Republican. What happened, of course, was very different. The under-30 vote went nearly as strongly for Obama as it had before: Obama got 66 percent of the under-30 vote in 2008 and 60 percent in 2012, the best youth-vote showings for any presidential candidate since 1971, when the voting age was lowered to 18.

“These are voters who are in their formative years, politically,” Joel Benenson, the lead pollster for the Obama campaign, told me excitedly in the days after the election. “People frequently maintain the partisan identity that shapes their entry point into politics. What’s happening now is something people will hang on to for decades to come.” Could Benenson be right? Has Obama turned an entire generation of voters into lifelong Democrats? The answer, according to political scientists who study partisanship, may well be yes.

The problem with sitting quietly in a corner with your eyes closed is that you miss when a new thread starts. 🙄 Thank you so much for tapping me on the shoulder, JO’B. You’re a good neighbour. 😛 Now I’ll try to catch up with Utal’s very thorough offerings.

          • March 21, 2013 at 7:45 pm

VC, have you been in the last post on your own for the last hour??

Yes, Utal has done a very good job! I don’t know what it is about this community (AND the larger Obama family community) but whenever one of the members does well It always seems, to me anyway, like a personal reflection on me. I don’t know why. I find myself puffing out my chest in pride, just like I find my figurative fists coming up when outsiders are needlessly mean or bitingly critical. Really weird, if you ask me.

Oh, there I go rambling again, like I’m making up for my quiet time in the corner. 🙄 All I started out saying was basically ‘Good work, Utal.’ 😛

I’m the queen of rambling, and “yours” was mild. (But I’m glad you’re out of the corner, to take some of the heat off of me!)

Good points, all, VC. We are in this together, for the long haul, with so many others who feel EXACTLY the way we do about President Obama. How lucky is that! No wonder you feel proud.

wonder how much taxpayer money is spent to travel around mark knoller, chuck todd, and the other propagandists of the white house press corpse when the president travels, and at the white house for that matter, so they can go around making fools of themselves and their employers.

there’s obviously already a process for picking and choosing who is part of the group, and it’s long past time to re-examine those who are there now. they serve no value for society and the democratic republic whatsoever, and in fact are clearly hurting the process. what stories have any of the front-rowers “broken” or what “tough question” has any one of them asked that led to anything?!?

the irony is that president obama shines when asked the toughest questions. when some foreign press person asks some detailed and pointed question about a foreign policy about the other side of the world, president obama can answer in great detail. when a military news person for example asks some tough question about a seeming contradiction in the administration’s policy, president obama is able to walk people through the reasoning in detail and handle follow-ups. when chuck todd asks some moronic question framed as the latest republican talking point which president obama proably already answered 4 different ways, you can see how hard our president has to work not to roll his eyes or say how stupid that question is. these people and their employers have no inherent right to be in that room costing us taxpayer money to advance republican talking points!!! get some real journalists in there who can actually help inform the electorate and hold politiicans accountable!! that’s all we’re asking for.

Tax payers aren’t paying their way.

During the 2012 elections, a few media firms were protesting the amount that Romney was charging them. Their outlets allow the WH travel section to book for them and they pay up is my understanding.

    • 63 Bill
      March 21, 2013 at 6:26 pm

I think their employers pay their expenses. There is a charge to fly on the press plane. At this point Chuck Todd and the MSM seem to think he really shined at the presser. That conclusion may well change. PBO always wins in the end.

    • 66 miss pat
      March 21, 2013 at 6:31 pm

Chuck Todd has no qualifications. He didn’t graduate from any college; never went to Journalism School.

There are many people right here on TOD that would make a better journalist than this man. Where, when, how and why, the first basic rules of journalism was not taught to this fool. Research, double check and research again; that is what I learned in High School in a third world country.

Trying to ask five questions while trying to shape them as one is not journalism. He is bluffing his way through life and one day it will all come crashing down.

      Lot of GOP/TP/MSM crying tonight.
      Bibi, too.

Clue to the future: Who was sitting next to John Kerry at the State Dinner/award ceremony today? Yair Lapid, a dynamic left-leaning head of Yesh Atid—the party that came in a very strong second to Bibi’s Likud.
Lapid is now the Finance minister and the education minister and Tzipi Livni, another reasonable person, is in charge of the peace process.

I know, sounds like the high school cafeteria— who sits with who—but I think it is significant and apparently so did Bibi. Anyone else notice how glum he looked once the festivities began? After the cute PBO holding the chair for his wife After that, no more smiles from the Prime Minister

I almost felt bad for Bibi, because he was really wincing when President Obama was thanking and commending President Peres and others, and looked like he was waiting to hear his own name held up, methinks. I was kinda glad that our President did mention him, I think I heard, somewhere near the last paragraph of his remarks.

I was just thinking about a certain twist relating to what these past few days have brought us, as President Obama supporters.

Remember how appalled we all were when The History Channel chose to depict “Satan” of their “Bible” series as someone resembling President Obama, to their denials? Now, this week, we see our President Obama with the leaders of Israel and Palestine – all members of different faiths, the three world faiths descending from Abraham.

These leaders were not meeting for religious purposes, per se, but they were in the area of the Holy Land that we know from The Bible. The main catalyst for their getting together was peace. The main character, the center of it all, was the real President Barack Obama.

Sometimes real life is better than what we modern folk might see through our modern technologies, ginned up by movie and serial producers and actors and movie sets, if we only remember to open our eyes and pay attention to the larger details unfolding in the world we share.

Thank you, President Obama, for opening our eyes and our minds and our hearts. (And yet he’s such a humble man! Love him.)

They have always underestimated the extent of the Barack Obama “charm.” What they call charm we know as brilliance, extraordinary presence and charisma, greatness of heart, an unparalleled ability to relate to people and a gift for delivering speeches for the ages. The always inadequate media can’t see past their own prejudices and jealousies so they try to disparage and pigeon-hole as a way of bringing PBO down to their own pathetic size. It’s never worked and never will. He is so much bigger and better than they can imagine.

surprised? wealthy people give less of their income to charities than do poorer people:

‘ One of the most surprising, and perhaps confounding, facts of charity in America is that the people who can least afford to give are the ones who donate the greatest percentage of their income. In 2011, the wealthiest Americans—those with earnings in the top 20 percent—contributed on average 1.3 percent of their income to charity. By comparison, Americans at the base of the income pyramid—those in the bottom 20 percent—donated 3.2 percent of their income. The relative generosity of lower-income Americans is accentuated by the fact that, unlike middle-class and wealthy donors, most of them cannot take advantage of the charitable tax deduction, because they do not itemize deductions on their income-tax returns.
    ~

Last year, Paul Piff, a psychologist at UC Berkeley, published research that correlated wealth with an increase in unethical behavior: “While having money doesn’t necessarily make anybody anything,” Piff later told New York magazine, “the rich are way more likely to prioritize their own self-interests above the interests of other people.” They are, he continued, “more likely to exhibit characteristics that we would stereotypically associate with, say, assholes.” ‘

I am so proud of our president…..He is truly the leader of the world…….

    Twitter celebrates its seventh birthday.

Twitter celebrates its seventh birthday on Thursday with 200 million users worldwide, who now send an average of 400 million short messages – or tweets – every day.

    ///

Now people use Twitter to campaign, share and discuss news, fundraise, propose marriage, challenge authority – and try to catch the eye of teen heart-throb Justin Bieber, who at time of writing has more than 36 million followers.

Alycee posted this on an earlier thread – if you didn’t catch it – well worth watching – mainly for the reality of that MSM creating public opinion to suit their republican views – but a quick look at tweety trying to argue “it was something else”

what a great day. Too bad I had to spend it doing life stuff (ie work) while all this great global life stuff was going on in the world and with our leader.

Thanks to everyone for all the updates and tweets. I was able to sneak in for minute at a time and always went back to my work with a huge smile on my face.

Now to work my way through the speeches, award and news conference.

There are just no words for UpChuck. He is a major embarrassment to thinking people and real journalists everywhere.

Can’t help but notice how the media was fawning over this visit at the beginning, unlike any of his other ‘road trips’. I think UpChuck delivered the talking points they were all prepared to bombard us with ie Israel doesn’t like PBO. They’ve amazingly changed the subject….again. L.O.S.E.R.S.

Since I don’t watch TV, I hadn’t seen much of President Obama’s trip to Israel. It is thrilling to read the commentary from the Israeli papers, to know that he was so well received there, that he spoke about the aspirations of the Palestinians to a group of Israelis and was cheered for it. He’s going right to the people, to the youth to be exact, to try to open their minds. I continue to be amazed at the wisdom and character and humanity of our President. We are a lucky people.

I really like this article’s content AND title! 😆 I have detested Netanyahu with a passion ever since he visited US and was IMO less than appreciative of the hospitality he received. Funny enough though while some in the media were opining on Pres O ‘strength’ in being pushed around by Bibi, I have always felt ‘wait and see’. I don’t think this is PBO’s final response to that jerk, only the first steps. Our President is exceptionally honest and confident in his perception of the world and where he wants to guide it while his hand is at the helm.

♥♥♥♥ “Love you, Mr. President!” ♥♥♥♥

Miss Israel is a stunner. Absolutely gorgeous! I read her story, what a wonderful young woman. To have MLK, Jr. as her hero and to be influenced and inspired by President Obama, she can’t help being an extraordinary woman.

Here’s an interesting tidbit from one of UT’s earlier links. It’s entitled ‘Obama Speech Leaves Israel In No Doubt What He Thinks About Netanyahu” (good title amirite?)

Anyway he’s the interesting part to me:

“The Jerusalem speech also made it clear why, during the reception at the airport the day before, Hatnuah leader Tzipi Livni and Yesh Atid chairman Yair Lapid received slightly more attention that the other ministers in the endless line of VIPs. Livni has already proved that she is interested in pursuing negotiations with the Palestinians. And while it is still too early to tell where Lapid’s loyalties lie – with the peace process or with his partner on the right, Naftali Bennett – apparently Obama, at least, thinks there might be reason to hope. ” http://bit.ly/Zghwfb

    #TrustObama he’s earned it. {{{{{hugs all around & especially for LL & ‘his missus’ and FormallyFredd}}}}}

LunarSea – thank you!!! for posting the link to this very important article …

“Sometimes it takes someone from the outside, like U.S. President Barack Obama, to show up and tell it like it is to the Israelis: You’ve got a wonderful country, you’re wise and just, you suffered and you deserve a state, and as long as the United States exists you’ll never stand alone – but for God’s sake, enough! Stop the settlements, stop the occupation, stop the deportations, stop the ongoing abuse of the Palestinians, and stop the settlers’ violence. Enough.”

      Yep!!!!

Should we send it to UpChuck and Addlebrain?

Quick note about the Tom Clements (Colorado Prison Chief) alleged suspect):
“Federal and state authorities, speaking on condition of anonymity, identified the man as Evan Spencer Ebel, 28, a parolee in the Denver metro area. The man was identified as a member of a white supremacist prison gang, the 211s.”

Gun culture? What gun culture in the U.S.?

Surely this was just an unfortunate accident by a law abiding patriotic citizen wielding a legally acquired gun according to his/her god-given 2nd amendment rights. No need for legislation to prevent this kind of thing. Carry on.

I think Brunswick, GA, is an exit off I-95, and I used to drive through with little grandkids, sometimes. It could be any of us, no matter how young the suspects are who probably borrowed Daddy’s gun!

A guy walks into a bar and sees a gorgeous babe nursing a drink. Walking up behind her he says, “Hi, there, good looking’! How’s it going’?”

She, having already downed a few power drinks, turned around, faced him, looked him straight in the eye and said: “Listen! I screw anybody, any time, anywhere, your place, my place, doesn’t matter to me. I’ve been doing it ever since I got out of college. I just flat-ass love it!”

Eyes now wide with interest, he responded, “No kidding! I’m a lawyer, too! What firm are you with?

Senator Murray now calmly rips Grassley and reminds everyone that only a balanced approach is viable and that new revenue is required …
