Irish Times: Taoiseach Enda Kenny has said US president Barack Obama has ’reaffirmed his intention’ to return to Ireland for a second official visit.

The two leaders held the traditional annual St Patrick’s Day meeting at the White House in Washington today.

Following a private meeting with the president afterwards, the Taoiseach said Mr Obama had accepted an invitation to visit Ireland again but was unable to say if he would do so during his second term as president.

It doesn’t surprise me that the major media are often less informed than we are about what’s happening on major issues and in the world,Hf2. It’s sad, but true, that if people read TOD regularly they would be more in tune with the real news than if they read all the major newspapers or tuned into all the tv news shows. We can spot lies and twisted talking points in a heartbeat and know exactly who’s lying to us and why. We are very fortunate.

Yes indeed, Yardarm! This is also true in the U.K., France, Germany, Brazil, India, Ghana, Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, China, Turkey, Libya, and many other countries that Chipsticks covered, but were” blacked” out by our so called mainstream media. President Obama has repaired our relations with so many other countries that had been broken by the Bush regime. Yet few Americans know about this. The U.S. media, which followed George W. Bush like a puppy, has been universally hostile towards President Obama. I think most of the media are trying to cover up their shameless failures during the Bush regime by appearing to be so tough against President Obama.

Whether it is the centerpiece of Obama’s gun legislation or not, I think this is so disheartening, so beyond revolting. Who the h needs an assault weapon? This is completely lacking in common sense. Letting Newtown families down and every other gun victim and all the multiple entities who are devoting their lives to getting something meaningful and decent passed. The NRA wins again.

    • 77 Melanie
      March 19, 2013 at 6:28 pm

I agree with you dotster it is very disheartening. The NRA possibly has won this portion of the battle but there is a mentality about guns in certain parts of this country that will take a while to change. Massive, sustained indignation about gun deaths in this country is what is needed. Our level of distractibility in this country is so high. There will literally need to be a civil rights type effort to change these laws; those changes did not occur over night. I watched the funeral of Jonylah Watkins today, the 6 month old baby killed in Chicago. For her and all of the other children and adults, this effort must continue.

      • 78 dotster3
        March 19, 2013 at 6:40 pm

I saw on Rev. Al that 57% of the public—-Repubs and Dems, all of us, support an assault weapons ban. Our congress is completely dysfunctional, the whole lot of them, all bought and paid for by the NRA and other corporate concerns. They do not represent the interests of the public, which is their duty. I’m so thoroughly disgusted. Every day there is more tragedy and heartbreak from gun violence. A 6 mo. old baby? 20 1st graders? What will it take???

      • 79 nathkatun7
        March 20, 2013 at 5:52 am

NRA has not won. We as citizens have failed to do what is necessary. Yes we need mass indignation! But what we need most importantly is mobilized pressure on our Senators and Representatives to make sure they do the right thing or face political consequences. We must stop calling this Obama gun legislation. This is Gabby Giffords legislation! This is legislation about the Children of Connecticut! This legislation about movie goers in Aurora, CO. This is legislation about all the young people gunned down every day on the streets of our cities.

I really don’t want to read another article from the MSM media telling me who won and who lost, the President or the Republicans in Congress, with some Democrat enablers, who do the bidding of NRA. I want to know how I can hook up with people who are seriously responding to our President’s call to be active citizens by putting pressure on Congress to listen to us instead of listening to the NRA lobby and other gun nuts. We as citizens must mobilize and dramatize the urgency of gun control legislation. We must learn from the real lesson’s of the past and stop buying into myths. For example: It’s debatable as to whether this Country would have ever enacted the 1964 Civil Rights Act, or the 1965 Voting Rights Act, without the massive and sustained Civil Rights struggles in the Streets over so many years. Any one who tells you that the Civil Rights laws were enacted because LBJ used the so called “bully pulpit” knows nothing about the reality of what took place, and the years (even decades) of sacrifices that so many people made, that eventually forced LBJ and the Congress to act. LBJ could never have accomplished the legislation that he did if people were not mobilized demanding real change. Without the Selma-to.Montgomery March, I doubt that Congress would have enacted the 1965 Voting Rights Act. So, Let’s get off our asses and seriously do something about putting pressure on Congress to enact effective gun safety measures. We have a President on our side. It’s the Congress, beholden to the gun lobby, which is against us. Consequently, we must mobilize all our time and energy to make sure that people in Congress know that they will pay a high political cost if they don’t enact meaningful gun safety laws, including a ban on military style assault weapons.

      March 19, 2013 at 6:33 pm

I would not be so quick to say that the NRA has won. The MSM is happy to frame it this way – we know every set back or temporary snag is ALWAYS framed in the media as a “major blow” for the DEMS and for PBO in particular. The WH has indicated their continued fight for the AWB (see my later post below). I am confident that if the WH believes they can “find the votes” then we should be optimistic about this.

    It should be a 50 Point Lead…..

Charlie Crist Leads Rick Scott By 12 Points in Latest Florida Poll

The latest PPP poll of the potential Florida governor’s race finds Gov. Rick Scott trailing former Gov. Charlie Crist by twelve points, 52%-40%.

According to PPP, Gov. Scott has been and continues to be wildly unpopular. Scott’s approval rating is at 33%. Fifty seven percent of those surveyed disapproved of the job that he is doing as governor. Scott’s acceptance of the Medicaid expansion in Florida resulted in a two point improvement in his approval rating with Democrats, but a three point drop in his approval rating with Republicans. Crist only has a 46%/43% approval/disapproval split, but the state’s Democrats solidly approve of him (66%/24%), and he leads Scott with Independents by 6 points (47%-41%).

HEADLINE: White House on assault weapons ban: ‘We’re going to find the votes’

// White House chief of staff Denis McDonough said in an interview Tuesday that Senate Democrats’ decision to introduce a gun control bill that doesn’t include an assault weapons ban does not constitute a setback for President Obama’s gun control efforts.

In an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, McDonough said the bill can still be brought up as an amendment and that there should still be a concerted effort to pass it. “We’re going to work on this. We’re going to find the votes,” McDonough said, according to a transcript. “And it deserves a vote and let’s see if we can get it done.” //

‘ (The Borowitz Report)—In a sombre ceremony attended by former members of the Bush Administration, the former Vice-President Dick Cheney marked the tenth anniversary of making up a reason to invade Iraq.
“Making up a reason to invade a country is the easy part,” Mr. Cheney told them. “Sticking to a pretend story for ten years—that is the stuff of valor.”

Mr. Cheney added that their “steadfast charade had raised the bar for all future Administrations.” ‘

“the other 1/3 still think slavery was a good idea.”

Please tell me how come the “brother” black right winger (I forgot his name) at the CP conference thinks that today’s Republicans can, with a straight face, appeal to African Americans and Latinos by calling themselves “Frederick Douglass Republicans”? Obviously he has never read Fredrick Douglass’ 1852 Fourth of July Speech (which he incidentally gave on the 5th in protest) entitled: “The Meaning of July 4th for the Negro.” I suppose he is also not familiar with Frederick Douglass’ speeches putting pressure on Abraham Lincoln to free the slaves and allow Black men to serve in the Union Army. He is certainly ignorant of the role that Douglass played in pressuring Congress to enact the Fourteenth and the Fifteenth Amendments. By the way, The “North Star” and “Fredrick Douglass’ Paper” were not founded with the goal of making profit and huge sums of money. These were crusading papers focused on ending slavery. Finally, Fredrick Douglass spent most of his later life as a public servant- U.S.Marshall for D.C; Recorder of Deeds for D.C.; and U.S. Minister and consul general to Haiti. I bet you the “brother” has never read Frederick Douglass’ last major speech that he gave in January, 1994, a year before he died. In that Speech, entitled “The Lesson of the Hour” (His third Speech with that title), Douglass vigorously denounced the heinous crime of lynching, and urged the government to take action to end it. It’s truly a shame that this guy is going around defacing the legacy of Frederick Douglass.

Hey! No Fair! I saw people still walking around on the plane as it started to taxi to the runway.
Commerical flight attendants would’ve stared you down (or slapped you down) by now! 🙂

Clearly, there are some distinct advantages to being on the flying “Oval Office” 😎 🙂

Have you seen this? Warning: It’s an 8+ min clip from a FAUX news report. Truthfully, it’s very well done. Of course, it was done when Pres. Bush was still President. I shudder to think how the story would have been told when Pres. Obama took office… Anyway, enjoy!!

Nice frequent flier miles total. Can you not see this is critically important information? 🙄

What? The President doesn’t earn frequent flier miles? Why, it’s an OUTRAGE!!

JEEZE LOWEEZ!!! Knoller is like some weird cross between The Count on Sesame Street howling out “the number of the day!” and the Cookie Monster wanting to snarf up the cookies. The guy is really strange!

Indeed Aquagranny. Seriously..I almost posted “The Count Counts the Mileage” thinking of that Sesame street character!

But his counting and food obsession seems only in relation to the President. He doesn’t seem to care how many times Boner cries at events, or what Turtle McConnell had for lunch.

This guy, Mark Knoller, must be sickly obsessed with the President! Come to think of it, I think he should be thankful because he would be no body if he wasn’t pre-occupied with writing about how many golf games President Obama has played, or what kinds and amounts of food the President has eaten, or how many miles the President has logged traveling abroad, etc., etc. I confess that I didn’t know who Mark Knoller was before President Obama was elected. Therefore I consider him, along with people like Chuck Todd, Ed Henry, Jake Tapper and others, as media beneficiaries of the Obama Presidency. Without President Obama, these people would be nowhere. Certainly no one can accuse them of being intellectual heavy weights when it comes to real journalism.

The President looks very dashing in his green tie and FLOTUS in her kelly green dress. The “Orange Boner” looks like the dufus that he is. It was so nice to hear the kind words and display of respect for PBO from the PM of Ireland. They clearly have the a good relationship.

Oh, Alycee, I’ll bet he ranks close to the top of the pile on corruption as well. He’s so open about it, too. I honestly believe he’s a very stupid man and doesn’t even know how to play the game subtly. The fact that this dim witted grifter makes more than the governors of California or New York is a truly astonishing and disgusting disgrace.

Since the tail chaser sanford didn’t clear the 50% mark, there will be a run-off between him and the distant 2nd placed rethug. But he will win the run-off since the gap in the first run is double digits.. rethug “values” at work.

Ok…I’m just seething…Harry Reid can’t get but 40 votes????…Excuse me but are there not more than 40 Dems in Senate?..Of course there are…soooo…..My big question….WHY BE A DEMOCRAT?…..Do Independents have more power?….I realize PBO is a Dem but can’t an Independent support him just as strong?….I am seriously considering changing my registration to Independent….somehow I feel that calling and writing my Senators and Congresspeople would pull more weight as an independent than a Dem writing Republican representatives….or even as a Dem writing a Dem Senator….as in Kay Hagen, whom I’ll bet my last dollar is not one of the 40…..I WON’T VOTE FOR HER IF NOT…..and don’t tell me not to pay attention to MSM or we have to work hard to get something…..if the deaths and injuries that have occured from assault rifles and high # magazines don’t move these people, they don’t deserve to be in Washington….

An aid in the office of Kay Hagen told me last week she would not be supporting an assult weapons ban. I read recently that Virginia Foxx is the favorite of the Republican base to run against Hagan. If Foxx is running against Hagan it will give Hagan much room to move to the right. It is a sad state of affairs in NC.

US lawmakers will ditch a plan to ban assault weapons, all but killing off a key part of a gun control campaign prompted by a recent school massacre.

Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein said her proposal would be left out of the firearms control bill.

Democratic Senate leader Harry Reid made the decision, saying the proposal could not get enough votes.

An assault-type weapon was used in the December massacre that killed 26 at a primary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

The shooting shocked the US and revived efforts in Washington DC to prohibit such firearms.

But while polls show most Americans back an assault weapon ban, influential pro-gun lobby groups such as the National Rifle Association have pressed lawmakers to oppose such a move.

Meanwhile, the town of Newtown has seen a surge in applications for gun permits since the massacre at Sandy Hook primary school in which 20 schoolchildren and six teachers were murdered.

There have been 79 requests for gun permits in Newtown since the shooting on 14 December, police say, although the town has only issued about 130 licences annually in recent years.

A police official said people were worried about new regulations.

“A good percentage of people are making it clear they think their rights are going to be taken away,” Robert Berkins told the Associated Press news agency.

    US is a basket case.

We need to remain strong on this. I just called Harry Reid’s office. We can all call our Senators tomorrow, and then continue to push for this.

All great causes have had set backs but then perservered. I remember when Prop 8 passed in CA and now gay marriage has strong support. The tobacco industry and alcohol have all had a firm grip on the country, but MADD, and a few big lawsuits against the tobacco industry have helped change the country’s attitude.

This will be a long battle but we can’t give up.

I’ve been boycotting these products since 2011! By the way, here in San Diego, Chevron has the highest gas prices. It’s worse than both Shell and Mobil. I buy my gas through Costco. Let’s hope it’s not affiliated with any of the Koch Gasoline Products.

Well, reading through the cowardice of pulling the assault weapons ban makes me think I should focus on the missus for the next few days and avoid the US news. I often think amk goes a bit overboard in his dismay at the US, but today I think he may be right.

Missus is home. I have to go pick up a blood thinner to avoid blood clots for her later tonight. Tomorrow she’s seeing visitors. I’m going to try and keep her occupied with her supervising me finally attacking the garage.

Thank you ALL again for the well wishes and support. Between you guys and my real life family and friends, we’ve been enveloped in a cocoon. I’ll check in with everyone tomorrow, where I can again shake my head at how hard it is to change a country to common sense.

I see that Glen Greenwald’s arse is getting a royal spanking on Twitter, thanks to JeffersonObama, Scott Flinley, Chips, others, etc. 🙂 They are hitting him with FACTS about his not so kosher past when it comes to his endorsement of illegal wars and blind trust in GWB, his defense of White supremacists, his hateful rhetoric about immigrants, etc., and his current deranged obsession with and hatred of President Obama….

As Jodi Kantor would say: Hmmm….
