“We have a spending problem,” says the GOPTP/MSM.

That is right. We spend $$$ giving tax breaks to oil companies.
We spend $$$ giving tax breaks to big agriculture companies.
“Carried interest” gives tax breaks to those who need it least and who make out well by avoiding tax on sales of art vacation homes horses, etc. Oh, and golf courses.

1.1 Trillion tax breaks to the powerful doled out by the USA every year. More than Medicare + Medicaid and more than SS.

The Real Spending problem is the give-aways to the already rich.

How can we spread this message better? It was the top editorial on the NYTimes today.
How can we make Boehner own this spending problem and stop him for using it falsely to suggest austerity for most of us?

Hello Everyone. A blessed and peaceful St. Patrick’s Day to all at TOD. Special greetings to you from Montserrat, the other Emerald Isle; the only other country in the world other than Ireland that celebrates St. Patrick’s Day with a public holiday.

Every year, we have a week of activities that leads up to St. Patrick’s Day. This year, We have many visitors from Ireland including Martin Healy and his band. Healy and his band performed at a concert last Wednesday evening and yesterday, they lit up the local radio station with some live inspiring Irish songs. Tomorrow, he and his band will also perform at the culminating fair. I wonder if he is related to Henry.

Today we all went to church in our national colour which is green. Tomorrow is the public holiday since St. Patrick’s Day this year falls on a Sunday.

If you are wondering why this day is so important to us, the first Europeans to settle here were the Irish. Consequently, our culture is a combination of Irish and African customs. Many of the places and families here still carry Irish names like Kinsale and Sweeney. Our national dish is an Irish stew cooked with African flavours. Another national symbol is the shamrock leaf.

The day has even more significance for us as a people because in 1768, the slaves on Montserrat planned an uprising for their freedom on St. Patrick’s Day. However, the plan was leaked and the slaves were killed. So, St. Patrick’s Day is also called National Day as we commemmorate the bravery of our ancestors.

    Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

    Morning MUST READ. http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/the-gops-real-agenda-20130313

After watching voters punish the GOP in the 2012 elections, Republican elites have been talking a brave game about reforms that would make the party less repulsive to Latinos, women and gay-friendly millennials. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, the GOP’s hip-hop-quoting young standard-bearer, is pressing conservatives to back an amnesty for undocumented immigrants. Dozens of party stalwarts, headlined by former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, renounced their opposition to gay marriage in a Supreme Court brief. GOP bigwigs have even launched New Republican โ€“ a group modeled after Bill Clinton’s centrist Democratic Leadership Council โ€“ which seeks to rebrand the party as “colorblind,” “not anti-government” and dedicated to “ending corporate welfare.”

How the GOP Became the Party of the Rich

Don’t be fooled. On the ground, a very different reality is unfolding: In the Republican-led Congress, GOP-dominated statehouses and even before the nation’s highest court, the reactionary impulses of the Republican Party appear unbowed. Across the nation, the GOP’s severely conservative agenda โ€“ which seeks to impose job-killing austerity, to roll back voting and reproductive rights, to deprive the working poor of health care, and to destroy agencies that protect the environment from industry and consumers from predatory banks โ€“ is moving forward under full steam.

The hardcore rump of the party is even working to punish moderate outliers like New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie โ€“ the party’s most popular leader โ€“ who was denied a speaking role at the conservative movement’s annual convention, CPAC. Today’s GOP may desperately need to remake itself as “culturally modern, environmentally responsible and economically inclusive,” argues David Frum, a veteran of the George W. Bush White House, but it remains, he says, in the throes of a “Tea Party tantrum.”

As it works to lock in as many retrograde policies as possible before it finally chooses to either modernize or die, the Republican Party is like a wounded beast: Rarely has it been more dangerous.

Desertflower, how are you dear one? Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you and family. This is a great read. I had just received it a few days ago, and that article was one of two of last nights reading for me. I found it to be very interesting for all to take serious about the GOP’s future on this nation.

There is also another interesting article in that same issue by Michael Hastings: “The Spy Who Cracked Up In The Cold.”

  24. March 17, 2013 at 2:28 pm

“The disruption of Johnsonโ€™s peace talks then enabled Nixon to hang on for a narrow victory over Democrat Hubert Humphrey. However, as the new President was taking steps in 1969 to extend the war another four-plus years, he sensed the threat from the wiretap file and ordered two of his top aides, chief of staff H.R. โ€œBobโ€ Haldeman and National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger, to locate it. But they couldnโ€™t find the file.

We now know that was because President Johnson, who privately had called Nixonโ€™s Vietnam actions โ€œtreason,โ€ had ordered the file removed from the White House by his national security aide Walt Rostow.”

“Nixon not only continued the Vietnam War, which had already claimed more than 30,000 American lives and an estimated one million Vietnamese, but he expanded it, with intensified bombing campaigns and a U.S. incursion into Cambodia. At home, the war was bitterly dividing the nation with a massive anti-war movement and an angry backlash from war supporters.”

“โ€œThere is something I want to tell you,โ€ Arafat said, addressing Carter in the presence of historian Douglas Brinkley. โ€œYou should know that in 1980 the Republicans approached me with an arms deal [for the PLO] if I could arrange to keep the hostages in Iran until after the [U.S. presidential] election,โ€ Arafat said, according to Brinkleyโ€™s article in the fall 1996 issue of Diplomatic Quarterly.”

Please read the entire article, if you haven’t already:

    h/t to Susanne

Yes, Nixon interfered with Johnson’s peace effort and an additional 27K+ US troops died, thousands more were injured and countless Vietnamese were killed – just to win the Presidency.

Yes, Reagan used American hostages as pawns and enabled horrific crimes in Central America – just to win the Presidency.

Yes, Bush stole an election and we all know the damage done to America, and innocent Iraqis, and others because SCOTUS enabled him to do so.

See the pattern. In each instance, the Democratic candidate that was defeated would most certainly have governed very differently – and the MIC and Wall St would have been constrained, significantly.

We all witnessed how much Bibi, #BainMitt, Adelson, et al tried to interfere in the outcome of 6 Nov 2012. And, we all have more than a clue why.

We will never escape our actions, no civilization or Nation ever has. Accountability arrives, one way or another. Painful as it may be, the best way for it to arrive is when it is self-administered.

It’s way past Tribunal Time in the United States of America.

paid to be rethug–the obvious next step:

‘ Reeling from back-to-back presidential losses and struggling to cope with the country’s changing racial and ethnic makeup, the Republican National Committee plans to spend $10 million this year to send hundreds of party workers into Hispanic, black and Asian communities to promote its brand among voters who overwhelmingly supported Democrats in 2012.
“It will include hundreds of people – paid – across the country, from coast-to-coast, in Hispanic, African American, Asian communities, talking about our party, talking about our brand, talking about what we believe in, going to community events, going to swearing-in ceremonies, being a part of the community on an ongoing basis, paid for by the Republican National Committee, to make the case for our party and our candidates,” Priebus said. ‘

    • 94 COS
      March 17, 2013 at 4:03 pm

Will Priebus implore his party in congress to stop being obstructionists and put forth policies that will benefit all of these ethnic groups, instead of taking away rights? Unless they change their brand, millions of dollars are not going to help.

Is that the price they only are willing to put on the outcome of a decent, hardworking, respectful American’s vote for them? Sad. These GOPers just do not get it. How many more elections will we have to win for them to get it.

Ten millions dollars will not change the hearts of people. And that would insult me as a voter in the first place. My community, my children, my grandparents health, my sons and daughters college right to get a fair and decent education in this country is only worth a party spending ten million dollars to show me your brand. No, it really shows me your heart. Remember, “out of the heart the mouth speaketh?” These people are sick and sad.

Until they change their hearts toward the 47 percent of the people, there is No Brand Change Period. Some brands are not Worth the money. Remember when you shop. So brands just are rotten to the core. Plain and simple. The American people can see what these GOPers have done to their savings, homes, children’s educational opportunities, health of the families, young and old, and obstruct the governing of our brilliant 44th President, Barack H. Obama. We are not fools. HZ

Funny Definition Of “Liberties” You Have There, Rand Paul

Sen. Rand Paul is nothing more than a misogynist Tea Party douchebag like the rest of the Republican party’s “conservatives”. The use of sweeping federal power to outlaw choice is fine, as long as it’s used against groups that don’t include the subset of white Republican male senators.
