Rise and Shine: Happy St Patrick’s Day from Henry and Stephen

Whaddya mean it’s too early for a Rise and Shine?! It’s already St Patrick’s Day in Ireland! Catch up!

****

A St Patrick’s Day word from Henry Healy:

Happy St Patrick’s Day from the Ancestral Home of President Obama.

Hi everyone, I wanted to share my St Patrick’s Day greetings with you all.

When I think back to the visit of the president to Moneygall and the amazing journey I have had from visiting last St Patrick’s Day and attending the inauguration this year I am eternally grateful.

As I go to the White House on Tuesday I will be thinking of the great people and experiences I have had and all of you here at TOD have been part of it.

I hope that those of you with Irish Heritage have a fantastic St Patrick’s Day and those of you without Irish Heritage put on the green and join in and celebrate with us.

Henry

A St Patrick’s Day word from Canon Stephen Neill, the man who discovered President Obama’s Irish roots:

To all my friends at The Obama Diary, I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy St. Patrick’s Day. We in Ireland are constantly amazed and encouraged by the warmth and hospitality extended to us as a nation by the people of the United States. President Obama has embraced this important relationship and the ongoing hospitality he affords to his Moneygall friends and relations is hugely appreciated. I had the privilege of a visit to the White House myself last month and was very grateful to members of the Obama administration who facilitated this for me at very short notice.

We in Moneygall are delighted that Henry Healy will once again be meeting the President at the official reception for St. Patrick’s day and look forward to perhaps another presidential visit to Moneygall during this second term of office. The visit in 2011 was a transformative experience for the people in this area and the fruits of that are still to be seen. It is a community that was energized and inspired by your President and the First Lady.

On this St. Patrick’s Day when people of all creeds and backgrounds in this land are united by a love of their country we pray that President Obama will find his Irish roots a source of blessing and inspiration as he too seeks to unite the people of the United States in that most important quest for the good and prosperity of all people. May God bless you all.

Some day soon, I hope, I’ll find sufficient words to thank LovelyPlains, UTAustinLiberal, Amk and LiberalLibrarian for all they’ve done this week, but for now I’m struggling. Seriously, I don’t even know where to begin. All I can say to them is, thank you so much – you’re just amazingly kind people, and between you, you’ve kept this place going in my absence. And a couple of them had never posted on a blog before, but set about teaching themselves how do it while I disappeared. Needless to say, they are all welcome to post here any time they wish, I’m honored to have them contribute here and it’s a way better place for it.

****

Embarrassingly, I still haven’t replied to a whole bunch of people who offered the kindest of words and/or offers to help with the blog – I am truly sorry, but I will try VERY hard to reply in the next day or two. Thank you, sincerely, for your support, it meant everything.

****

Will catch up with you all in the next day or two, love ya.

HF, have to echo what you said about the great work of LP, UT, LL and amk and the happiness of having Chips back. Our sixth-month old grandbaby has been keep us hopping this weekend, so haven’t had time to do more than click in quickly to try to keep up. Baby care was so much easier when I was in my twenties. Hello Miss Chips – wonderful to hear from you – and as to the time – perfect – it is 3.30pm on St Patrick’s day in my world

My Irish roots are one quarter of my genealogy – my Dad’s father had 100% Irish roots – although born in Australia of an immigrant from Ireland & his Australian born wife – daughter of 2 immigrants from Ireland.

Sadly my paternal grandfather died when my dad was 6 and his brother was 3 – but the Irish lived on – those 2 little boys – who were given the most imposing English names by their English mother – were known for all their lives as Mick and Pat.

I will forever remember your fabulous and memorable coverage of the visit by POTUS and FLOTUS to Ireland. As a result of your coverage, TOD members, unlike most Americans who depend on mainstream corporate media, experienced first hand the incredible warmth and enthusiasm of the Irish people towards President Obama and the First lady. Lastly, thank you for selecting such a great team to fill your shoes while you try to catch a breath. Nath, you’re so right about the fact that, thanks to Chips, we at TOD are fortunate to experience presidential events that in a way that’s just not available to regular tv viewers. We ‘re actually going on this journey with our president, while others have no idea what’s going on because Americans are deliberately kept in the dark. It’s such an incredible privilege that we have and just shows how amazing Chips is and how utterly inadequate the US media is.

I remember drinking some green beer back in the day at some of the great Chgo Irish pubs—-Butch McGuire’s etc.— but—why did I do that? Green teeth and mouth for days—–not attractive. Lots of fun though in those post college days in Chgo—–as I fondly reminisce. Still have some fun but tend to favor beer of the non-green variety now. Cheers!

Good editorial in this morning’s Des Moines Register asking why does IA senator Grassley keep complaining so much about Washington – why doesn’t he just DO something? It’s at http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20130317/OPINION01/303170033/Doak-After-38-years-Grassley-is-part-of-the-problem?Opinion – the editorial really lays out what the POTUS can do and what his limits are. You’d never know Congress was supposed to do most of this stuff – they make it sound like it’s POTUS’s job. I’m just sorry our senator is such a big part of the problem. 😕

    • 98 Bill
      March 17, 2013 at 9:02 am

Cruz introduced a bill to defund the ACA for which every Republican Senator voted “aye”. There is nothing to prevent Republican Senators from introducing bills to defund programs about which they complain continually. If they were serious they could make Democrats take a stand on specific programs but yet for some reason they are unwilling to do so. Yet, they are never asked why. Love your editorial.

“The other congressional Republicans from Iowa are just as culpable for failing to curb “Washington.”

Tom Latham and Steve King saturated the airways in the 2012 campaign with ads denouncing Washington’s spending and pledging to cut it.

It takes some kind of brass to campaign for office on promises to cut spending when you have served in Congress a collective 28 years and haven’t done it, not even when your party had the majority.

The con job has gone on long enough. It’s grown tiresome for politicians to campaign for smaller government but not even try to achieve it when they are in office.”

      Love it.

Alot of the media know exactly what the Republicans have been doing, but they remain silent or try to imply that both side are doing it. And while I don’t doubt that Democrats pay their tricks too, but the crap this country have been dealing with here the last few years are because of the Republican Party refusal to work with this President. And why is Grassley complaining when he has been one of the main one leading this crap.

O no, Don, it’s not too late. We’ll take each piece of truth they (RWMedia) put out there, because though they won’t convince the well-informed, they may cause one more repub-leaning reader to START thinking, or help pick off one more wavering republican. This is quite the story—–Army Staff Sgt. in Afghan. pleads guilty to stealing “at least” $1 million (thought to be as high as $10 million) shipping the cash back to U.S. in hollowed out VCRs. She was in charge of handing out cash to Afghans who support U.S. forces there—–in cahoots with some/all of them. Said to be one of 80 such cases being investigated—-have found other military personnel with hundreds of thousands stuffed in teddy bears etc. Sad and sickening.

I saw KB on C-SPAN from 7:58 to 8:22 AM CT. Most of her conversation was not about tearing down Dems. She was asked why Dems do not have their own CPAC, she gave it her best shot. It was more like, Dems should, but they don’t. She talked about VA and the Governor race. Etc.

GOP since 1968 made their own media, have their own periodical, Think Tanks, Fox, 1300 Talk radio, have symposiums just about every other month and they work and have rendered MSM to basically work for them. That is why things like Voter Suppression, Discrimination, Women’s right, Workers’ rights are missing as central discussions. Right wing dominate the discussion. Dems need to either build a true 50 states party or champion their Former Pure Core…..workers of all Levels.

On The Cycle, which I don’t see much at all, KB is the best of the 4.

        March 17, 2013 at 11:41 am

        Nena….

the Trade Union movement use to occupy that space…with the decline of that movement…there has been a loss of this voice….many of the voices that have always been central has been the blk liberation movement…from the slavery to the present..the ever forward movement of black people slowly etches the marker of racial equality and economic justice forward….

there was a piece the booman wrote a few days ago…commenting on EdShultz being replaced by Chris Hayes…there were sentences that caught my attention:

He may have his faults, but he fills a critical niche among white progressives. I don’t like to paint people into tight categories, but the progressive movement is mainly made up of three groups. The first and most powerful group is made of lawmakers who represent urban areas with large minority populations. Most of these lawmakers are black, Latino, or Asian, and they dominate the Progressive Caucus in the House of Representatives. The second group is made up of a combination of the academic world and the liberal-minded professional classes. The scientific community has a foot in each of these camps. It’s this second group that dominates the progressive blogosphere. It’s also where you find most of the MSNBC lineup. Chris Hayes went to Brown University; Lawrence O’Donnell went to Harvard; Rachel Maddow was a Rhodes Scholar; Ezra Klein went to UCLA; Melissa Harry-Perry has a doctorate from Duke University and has taught at Princeton. So, where does Big Ed fit in? He represents the third group: labor. He represents the interests of all working men and women, regardless of race.

        read more here: http://www.boomantribune.com/story/2013/3/14/11649/9098

of that passage…this sentence gave me pause…

The first and most powerful group is made of lawmakers who represent urban areas with large minority populations. Most of these lawmakers are black, Latino, or Asian, and they dominate the Progressive Caucus in the House of Representatives…

i found it curious that he thought it was the Representatives and not the people they represented the most powerful group…

then i thought about some members of the CBC….

Conyers, Lewis…Cummings… Chisolm….to name a few…over the years who have been powerful voices for racial equality and economic justice…

yet the so called white progressives do not talk much about these communities…and if they do it is most often in the 3rd person…

I would, and so would many others. And I think this recognition of the MSM’s proGOP bias partly contributed to PBO’s win in 2012. Folks began to question the misleading info that they saw on TV and read in the papers. There were a variety of articles being disemminated over Twitter and on the blogs about the proportion of negative media coverage PBO was receiving relative to the Republicans.

However for the midterm which tends to be a “low info” election, we need to be more vigilant/astute than ever about the MSM machinations.

    • 161 Bill

Krystal said Democrats needed a viable Republican party in order to produce good ideas. She stated the meme numerous times. One rwnj caller said the Democrats never accepted Republican ideas and she agreed. She failed to remember the ACA came from the Heritage Foundation and was originally Romney Care. She gave no defense of PBO and his battles with Republicans. She must be looking for a promotion.

I am going to see if the tape is up and pull it and post it here. I am not shadowing you Bill, nut I saw most of her comments. I didn’t get that she was bashing Dems all the time.

        March 17, 2013 at 11:35 am

The only way you get ahead at msnbc is by bashing Democrats.

Alex Wagner on the Bill Maher show is an aritculate, inspiring progressive who ‘gets it’. Then look at her at her day job on msnbc.

Let’s be clear – the choice that the powers at msnbc have made is to put on people who are allegedly liberal but have them bash Dem’s, thereby diminishing Democratic ideas, memes and frames. It’s nefarious.

I had read that NBC said they were trying to appeal to a ‘younger demographic’ with Chris Hayes over Ed Schultz. They could say that with a straight face? Chris Hayes is going to give O’Reilly competition? It’s just a way to give an emoprog whiner a bigger platform to bash PBO and Democrats. And try to make drones more important than jobs or clean energy. We won’t hear about PBO’s long term plan for energy independence and modernization; we will only hear about gas leases as if that’s all there is to PBO’s energy plan.

I cannot and will not give Chris Hayes or MHP a pass. They are highly intelligent, educated people who should have made an effort to understand the plight of real people’s lives by Republican destruction. They CHOOSE to not understand, to not factor in the real reasons that PBO has not been able to yet accomplish all that he set out to accomplish.

It’s one thing to carry on from your ivory tower that we’d be better off with no ACA than an imperfect one. Tell that to the vast number of middle class Americans who cannot afford to fix rotting teeth because costs are impossible to pay for out of pocket. Who stand no chance to get chemo because they own a small house and work for a living, but can’t afford or get health insurance. We’ll take the steps we can, and work to improve upon them.

How dare these ivory tower kids choose to not understand that. How dare they. And eff msnbc, who puts them on as if they’re actual liberals fighting for actual liberal causes and candidates that could actually change the dynamic of American politics.

I agree that there are times that i mute Chis Hayes and MHP….but there are also times that they bring timely and useful information pieces to their program….so i will not throw out the baby with the bath water…i will take what is useful and trash what is not…i will praise when warranted and criticize when necessary….

a far as NBC is concerned it is about ratings…IMO….and money

i think that it is important for us to watch…because i think we have to call folks out when necessary…provide push back..that is what we do…but we should encourage folks when appropriate as well…Feedback can be powerful…

          on another note….

i have gathered a few neighbors and family members to join me in my letter writing campaign to the GOP reps in my state…using the listing provided by WiW…

You’re right, Pf, we can’t let down for one minute. We have to reach out to people and register voters, like it’s a presidential election year. Pa’s state house has to change. Four more years of the Corbett administration and Pa will be so far gone it will take decades to recover. It’s good to see so many R’s in PA are fed up with Corbett. Now is the time to regain the governor’s office and gain back seats in the state senate and assembly. And you’re right, we absolutely have to win back the US House and keep the senate. Obviously, I don’t always agree with everything says, but I felt she was pragmatic and made a lot of sense most of the time. This nonsense about Democrats having stale ideas is beyond the pale. I can’t imagine what the (blank) she is talking about. We just had the spectacle of the CPAC Convention which can only charitably be called “Bring In The Clowns” and she goes on the tv and makes this statement about the Democrats:? There is a good reason why we call President Obama the only adult in the room. Krystal has ripped her drawers with me on this one. I would like to direct her to whitehouse.gov where she can find some very FRESH ideas if she can take the time to read. smdh

No one tears their side more than those who claim to be part of them. So KB when she’s wrong, let Us point her errors and move on. We don’t all have to agree or our world will be severely unbearable.

I do not expect MSNBC to be an “Al Gore” station. But neither do I expect them to be an “Erick Erickson” station.

Reading the 7 headlines I provided here – which station do think they more closely resemble? Al Gore or Erick Erickson?

Remember MSNBC dubs itself as a “Lean Forward” station. It is extremely important that we point out the agenda of MSNBC and it’s contributors so that unsuspecting viewers aren’t mislead into thinking that MSNBC is something that it isn’t. That’s part of educating and informing our fellow citizens.

I don’t believe that MSNBC has become an Eric Erickson station. RedSate is his creation and I must confess, I have never been on his site. However, I do know from which world he makes his pronouncements.

I am a Roman Catholic who is against abortions, but have fought and defended rights of those who wish to have them and Have never judged anyone for their views on that. Does that make me a lost cause to Liberal Views? No. MSNBC is not mine. They happen to have more Liberals and Progressives than others. Those Folks have their jobs to do. Understanding them is to me, a better way to judge their points of views. Soros when asked once, why doesn’t fund a Leftie News station, he said that he doesn’t see a need for it. Should I then condemn him and start dismissing him as a Liberal? Nope.

The tone to which we register our disagreements with people like KB, wins the day.

Flies are caught with honey not with vinegar. So we should take the Good, fix the confused..ie…the Bad,… and work on the misguided….in this case, the ugly.

Nena all I’m saying is that when you bill yourself as a “Lean Forward” station – with 90 -100% of your viewers Democrats/progressives, you better damn well have something to answer for when 4 of your top 5 headlines are FEATURING (not mocking) RW agendas and a KKK rally (CPAC) with washed-up past election losers from GOP party.

            That’s all I’m saying.

Nena,,if you remember the graph that RM had provided about the TOP PACs/contributors to campaigns…

        on the GOP/TP side…were major corporations…on the DEM/Progressive side were UNIONs….

        same with radio…

i would like to see…unions and others …use local radio and cable stations to get their message out…as we know all politics are local….we may not be able to compete on the scale of a fox news at this time…..but we can begin locally….and if you remember…fox news and company…have been in making for 20-30 yrs…..

so let us begin our trek there….

Those radio stations are 90-95 percent RWNJs. NPR are scared to feature Unions. They take Corporate Dollars. So the Union point of views are never heard. When heard, ONLY the ugly sides are presented. The reason, heck, the more reason that there has to be a thriving Left to Center left Vision Medium to shift the Right Leaning dominance. I am rooting for Al Jazerra America. BBC World. ITN. CBC. EuroNews. Anything that is NOT the way MSM run the News media.

there are local radio/cable/college stations ..that have community access stations…we can use those…and heck…we can use old fashion street meetings to achieve our goal as well…

Community Organizing begins in the community…

Ha ha——My daughter reports my 3 yr. old grandson got up this morning and proudly announced:
“It’s Patrick’s Day! I want to dye eggs!”
“No, you have to wait for Easter to do that.”
“Well, do I get a present?”
“No. You get corned beef and cabbage.”
    “No cabbage.”
Life can sometimes be disappointing. 🙂

Boehner Admits There is No Immediate Debt Crisis; Wants to Gut Social Security and Medicare Anyway

    By: Jason Easley

    ———————————

If there is no immediate crisis, why are Republicans so hellbent on cutting Social Security and Medicare? The answer is ideology. Republicans have hated Social Security and Medicare from the day they each became law. The ginned up fake immediate debt crisis as championed most loudly by Paul Ryan is the latest cover story for the right wing war on the social safety net.

This isn’t about solvency and insolvency. Notice how Republicans always ignore the official numbers when talking about Social Security and Medicare. Republicans are ideologically committed to destroying the social safety net. Speaker Boehner’s comments today were an admission that cuts don’t need to be made, but Republicans want them just because.

    REMEMBER ‘GAME CHANGE’

Reeking of Obama Hate and Desperation, Sarah Palin Was the Joke at CPAC

    By: Jason Easley

    ————————————

Too much shouldn’t be read into the fact that Palin had the CPAC crowd in stitches. Paul Ryan, Rand Paul, and Wayne LaPierre each had them rolling in the aisles. Saying anything bad or hateful about Democrats and Obama is all it took to send this crowd into hysterics.

From a potential heartbeat away from the presidency to willing to be the right wing’s rodeo clown for a buck, Sarah Palin is living on the Skid Row of American politics.

CPAC may have been laughing with her, but the rest of the country is laughing at the idea that the Republican Party once tried to sell this wigged out clown as presidential material.

    Sarah, stick to Facebook.

    POPCORN ANYONE??

Rove Fires Back at Palin: I’m May Be a ‘Balding Fat Guy,’ but ‘I Wouldn’t Leave Office Midterm’

    BY David

    —————————————

“I have to set the record straight,” Rove told Fox News host Chris Wallace. “I’m a volunteer. I don’t take a dime for my work with [super PAC] American Crossroads. I even pay my own travel expenses out of my own pocket. I thought Sarah Palin was about encouraging grassroots volunteer activity, I’m a volunteer.”

“Second of all, look, I appreciate her encouragement that I ought to go home to run for office,” he continued. “I would be enthused if I ran for office to have her support.”

“I would say this, though. I don’t think I’m a particularly good candidate, sort of a balding, fat guy. And second of all, I’d say if I did run for office and win, I’d serve out my term, I wouldn’t leave office midterm.”

It should be noted that Rove did leave his unelected office before the end of President Bush’s term.

Hello Everyone. A blessed and peaceful St. Patrick’s Day to all at TOD. Special greetings to you from Montserrat, the Emerald Isle of the West; the only other country in the world other than Ireland that celebrates St. Patrick’s Day with a public holiday.

Every year, we have a week of activities that lead up to St. Patrick’s Day. This year, We have many visitors from Ireland including Matin Healy and his band. Healy and his band performed at a concert last Wednesday evening and yesterday, they lit up the local radio station with some live inspiring Irish songs. Tomorrow, he and his band will also perform at the culminating fair. I wonder if he is related to Henry.

Today we all went to church in our national colour which is green. Tomorrow is the public holiday since St. Patrick’s Day this year falls on a Sunday.

If you are wondering why this day is so important to us here, the first Europeans to settle here were the Irish. Consequently, our culture is a combination of Irish and African customs. Many of the places and families here still carry Irish names like Kinsale and Sweeney. Our national dish is an Irish stew cooked with African flavours. Another national symbol is the shamrock leaf.

The day has even more significance for us as a people because in 1768, the slaves on Montserrat planned an uprising for their freedom on St. Patrick’s Day. However, the plan was leaked and the slaves were killed. So, St. Patrick’s Day is also called National Day as we commemmorate the bravery of our ancestors.

    Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

    WARNING: OLDER MEN SCAM

Women often receive warnings about protecting themselves at the mall and in dark parking lots, etc. This is the first warning I have seen for men. I wanted to pass it on in case you haven’t heard about it.
A ‘heads up’ for those men who may be regular customers at Lowe’s, Home Depot, Costco, and even Wal-Mart. This one caught me totally by surprise. Over the last month I became a victim of a clever scam while out shopping. Simply going out to get supplies has turned out to be quite traumatic. Don’t be naive enough to think it couldn’t happen to you or your friends.
    Here’s how the scam works:
Two nice-looking, college-aged girls come to your car or truck as you are packing your purchases into your vehicle. They start wiping your windshield with a rag and Windex, with their breasts almost falling out of their skimpy T-shirts (It’s impossible not to look). When you thank them and offer them a tip, they say ‘No’ but instead ask for a ride to McDonald’s. You agree and they climb into the vehicle. On the way, they start undressing. Then one of them starts crawling all over you, while the other one steals your wallet.
    I had my wallet stolen January 4th, 9th, 10th, twice on the 15th, 17th, 20th, 24th, & 29th. Also February 1st & 4th, twice on the 8th,16th, 23rd, 26th & 27th, and very likely again this coming weekend.
So tell your friends to be careful. What a horrible way to take advantage of older men. Warn your friends to be vigilant. Wal-Mart has wallets on sale for $2.99 each. I found even cheaper ones for $.99 at the dollar store and bought them out in three of their stores.
Also, you never get to eat at McDonald’s. I’ve already lost 11 pounds just running back and forth from Lowe’s, to Home Depot, to Costco, Etc.
Please, send this on to all the older men that you know and warn them to be on the lookout for this scam. (The best times are just before lunch and around 4:30).
    😆 😆
