Lovely Plains, the day’s schedule for both the president & First Lady should read “First Lady Michelle Obama”, not “Michelle Obama”. The First Lady deserves to be addressed properly too especially on a blog that supports her husband.

Morning Joe interviewed Lyin’ Ryan today and asked him no questions about his tax cuts for the rich, his refusal to close tax loopholes, his wanting to repeal ACA but yet use the “savings” to cut the deficit, and no plans to cut military spending. The MSM is failing us.

IS THE BLOOM FINALLY OFF THE ‘LYIN RYAN’ ROSE??

    Ryan: No Juice

    by Michael Tomasky

    ———————————————-

Well, this Ryan business isn’t working out so well this time. When you’re a Republican, and not just any Republican but their great fiscal guru, and even Fox News personalities are calling you unrealistic, you’ve laid an egg.

Here’s a salient snip from this morning’s Washington Post editorial, which is mostly negative and unlike previous editorials is written in the bored tone of having seen this movie before:

This brings us to the ideas that are too unrealistic to worry about: chiefly, Mr. Ryan’s proposal to save $1.8 trillion by repealing Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion and insurance exchanges. Combined with $700 billion in anticipated net interest savings, the Obamacare repeal accounts for more than half of the deficit reduction in Mr. Ryan’s budget — which pretty much closes the book on it as a serious guide to future policy.

There you have it. Not serious. There is no greater sin in these matters.

Barack Obama, I was relieved to see, heeded my words from yesterday. Here’s part of a Politico write-up on what he told George Stephanopoulos last night:

Well, looky here, it’s all my O peeps on the TOD porch, on yet another great getting day this morning, with lovelyplains serving up the goodies!!

So, I see that the young gun Paulie, is sticking to his old guns and continuing to play that same old song about the budget. Someone in that party should pull him aside and remind him of the thorough beat down PBO gave him the last time. A righteous backhand slap to the noggin, while Paulie could do nothing but sit there in the front row trying to take it like a man. What a buffoon, smh.

The Morning Plum: Don’t let Paul Ryan skate this time

    By Greg Sargent

    ————————–

In the movie Groundhog Day, the character played by Bill Murray leaves his hotel and steps off a curb, only to plunge his foot deep into an icy puddle. The Murray character does this a couple of times, grows annoyed with himself, and then, on the next rerun of the morning, finally remembers the location of the puddle and steps around it.

Today, in releasing his new budget, Ryan will, in political terms, step into the icy puddle a third time.
    .
    .
More broadly, there’s the glaring fact that Ryan and Mitt Romney just lost an election fought around all of these fiscal questions. The unrepentant reprisal of the same fiscal vision that was decisively repudiated last fall is bound to attract notice and penetrate the narrative (see the Journal’s pointed language above as Exhibit A).

Perhaps folks will once again politely look the other way as Ryan steps in the icy puddle again. But things just may be different this time.

    EDITORIAL

The Worst of the Ryan Budgets

March 12, 2013 – The New York Times

    ——————————————————–

All the tired ideas from 2011 and 2012 are back: eliminating Medicare’s guarantee to retirees by turning it into a voucher plan; dispensing with Medicaid and food stamps by turning them into block grants for states to cut freely; repealing most of the reforms to health care and Wall Street; shrinking beyond recognition the federal role in education, job training, transportation and scientific and medical research. The public opinion of these callous proposals was made clear in the fall election, but Mr. Ryan is too ideologically fervid to have learned that lesson.
    .
    .
There’s no need, of course, to balance the budget in 10 years or even 20; these dates are arbitrary, designed solely to impress the extreme fiscal conservatives who now compose the core of the Republican Party. That same core in the House will almost certainly reject the 2014 Democratic budget expected from the Senate on Wednesday. It will take a far more evenhanded approach, cutting spending by $1 trillion while eliminating tax breaks for the wealthy and spending $100 billion on job training and infrastructure.

If the Ryan budget is any indication, Mr. Obama’s quest to bring reason to an unreasonable party may be doomed from the outset.

Obama rejects GOP premise on balanced budgets

    By Steve Benen

    ——————————-

Indeed, even Ryan has struggled to explain why it’s necessary to balance the budget within 10 years. His blueprint, released yesterday, said lower interest rates will boost the economy, but interest rates are already ridiculously low. We’re left with shallow talking points in which GOP lawmakers tout a specific-but-arbitrary fiscal goal for no other reason than they think it sounds nice.

The president, to his credit, is presenting a smarter path. It’s not as progressive a path as I’d like — my preference would be to hear Obama say he wants to borrow more in the short term, using the money to boost the economy — but if deficit reduction is to remain a priority, at least it’s a sensible approach built on gradually striving for fiscal sustainability.

The latest Republican plan picks a target date of the air, calls for brutal and unpopular spending cuts, punishes the poor while giving the wealthy another massive tax break, and challenges the president to follow their lead. Obama doesn’t see the need to play along.

    He’s right.

A Brutal Assessment Of Why Paul Ryan’s Budget Announcement Was The Exact Opposite Of ‘Courageous’

    By Joe Weisenthal

    ————————–

    A Display of Courage?

Chairman Ryan has at times received praise for having the courage to propose these policies. In reality, this budget reflects more of a lack of courage than an abundance of it.

Is it courageous to propose tax cuts but not identify a single tax expenditure to rein in? Is it courageous to target your deepest cuts on the poorest Americans, who vote in lower numbers and provide little in campaign contributions? Is it courageous to camouflage hundreds of billions in cuts for the poor and disadvantaged in broad budget categories without identifying the programmatic cuts, so that analysts, journalists, and other policymakers can’t identify the specific cuts and assess their impacts?

Great comment on Elizabeth Warren at this post……….

      Mr.E • 15 hours ago

“What we have here, is [NOT] a failure to communicate.”
I don’t recall another politician, or nearly any expert on anything, who could speak as clearly, intelligently and knowledgeably on any subject as Senator Warren. She speaks with no euphemisms, no ambiguity, no vague terminology, no reliance on undefined principles, and no ulterior motives other than to represent and stand up for the people of this country, fairness and democratic principles.

She is, indubitably, a unique and remarkable woman. It is not fair nor reasonable to expect others to match her, But it is possible that she may, in time, initiate a great paradigm shift of what people, having seen one example, may come to expect and demand from politicians and the media. People may be disconnected, disinterested, and therefore uninformed about politics, news and history, but they are not stupid. When someone speaks to them lucidly, intelligently and with respect, they listen and understand.

    • March 13, 2013 at 9:25 am

We definitely need more representatives like her.

  28. March 13, 2013 at 9:08 am

It is ironic to me that here are some in this country who will acknowledge the plight and obstruction of civil/human rights of those any other countries before acknowledging the plight and obstruction of the civil and human rights of those right here in the US.

Many of these same people are also working to make sure the American Dream remains a dream – a dream that will become harder to achieve – if not impossible — if they have their way. Jobs, wages, education, insurance, everything that makes it possible to achieve this dream are all under attack by those who are trying to keep the inner circle of the 1% intact.

I know that President Obama is fighting this “war against the middle class and poor” for us. That’s why I voted for him…twice as many of you did. That makes it more frustrating that many of the ones he is fighting for are the ones who are criticizing and hindering his efforts. It is easy to criticize when you do not have responsibility for the results. So if the President is going to be the one held ultimately accountable, then he should at least be at peace with the decisions he must make. It may not be done in the way we want it, but in the end, it will work out to our benefit.

And We the People should continue to hold on to our belief and our hope and be supportive, knowing that he is doing what we elected him to do.

    FORWARD!!!

Days after top House Republicans asked President Obama to expand a provision in the Affordable Care Act, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) admitted on Wednesday that the ACA incorporates provisions that Republicans “have always been talking about,” including solutions he himself proposed in 2009.

THE TEA PARTY TAIL WAGS THE ELEPHANT

    A Tug O’ the Forelock

    By Ed Kilgore

    ———————–

But let’s don’t forget the specific reason for the specific contours of this latest Ryan Budget. As Will Marshall points out in a piece at RCP:

What, then, is the point of this exercise? One is to draw the sharpest possible contrast with Democratic calls for tax increases and faintheartedness when it comes to slowing health care spending. But Ryan’s budget also is a concession to restive Tea Party conservatives in the House. Earlier this year, they reluctantly agreed to back a temporary extension of the government’s borrowing authority. In return, the Republican House leadership promised a new plan to balance the budget in 10 years.

That’s right: Ryan’s budget is a tug of the forelock by the House GOP to the Cut-Cap-Balance crowd who think a radical and permanent reduction in domestic spending, read right into the Constitution, should be the eternal message of the Republican Party, no matter what happens electorally.

    More trouble in FL… http://www.tampabay.com/news/politics/gubernatorial/florida-lt-gov-jennifer-carroll-resigns/2108607

Florida Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll resigned Tuesday, Gov. Rick Scott’s office just announced.

Earlier Tuesday she was interviewed by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which is assisting in a national probe of Allied Veterans of the World, a Florida-based nonprofit that operates a chain of internet cafes.

Carroll once owned a public relations firm that represented Allied Veterans, and she did work for the company at the same time she served in the Florida House.

Gov. Scott will address the media after an afternoon press conference on the matter conducted by law enforcement.

Scott chief of staff Adam Hollingsworth released the follow statement:

“Individuals were arrested Tuesday for a racketeering and money laundering charges in connection with Allied Veterans of the Worlds illegal gambling companies. Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll consulted for Allied Veterans while serving as a member of the Florida House of Representatives in 2009 and 2010. She was interviewed by Florida Department of Law Enforcement officers Tuesday regarding her work with the company. Lt. Gov. Carroll resigned in an effort to keep her former affiliations with the company from distraction from the administration’s important work on behalf of Florida families. She made the right decision for the state and her family.”

Retail sales post largest gain in five months

Retail sales rose solidly in February as Americans bought automobiles and other goods even as they paid more for gasoline, suggesting consumer spending this quarter will hold up despite higher taxes.

    http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/03/13/us-usa-fiscal-whitehousetours-idUSBRE92C0I320130313

President Barack Obama is looking for ways to restart popular tours of the White House to allow certain groups such as students to visit.

“What I’m asking them is are there ways, for example, for us to accommodate school groups, you know, who may have traveled here with some bake sales. Can we make sure that kids … can still come to tour?” Obama told ABC News in an interview on Tuesday and aired on Wednesday.

The White House earlier said it had to suspend the tours this month in the wake of mandated across-the-board spending cuts known as “sequestration.” The move saves the government about $74,000 a week.

Trips to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue are particularly popular in the spring as waves of school groups and other tourists descend upon the nation’s capital to visit monuments and other Washington buildings and attend the annual National Cherry Blossom Festival.

I’m hoping they can get the tours back for the school kids. As for as the adults goes, specially the Republicans, if the tours meant all that much to them, they ought to have gotten in touch with their Congress person and told them to stop this sequester. Now that they see the affects of the sequester they want to complain. The President ask the people to contact Congress and tell them to stop the sequester.

Apologies to any devout Catholics here, but I hope the end is nigh… They have outlived their true purpose, nothing lasts forever. I comment as a female raised in the RCC; even now, mature and intelligent, I still have to wrestle with guilt…. Even though I have little to feel guilty about! So deep-seated, almost impossible to get a handle on…

Thank you so much LP for taking on some blog duties for dear overworked Chips, you are doing a great job!

This link is not directly TOD related but I give this group a lot of credit, they are compiling all the evidence in the Steubenville rape case which is going to trial. It’s not an easy read but they seem legitimately dedicated to more sunlight in what appears to be a whole lot of darkness.

Spent the day talking about the House and Senate budgets in various settings and I’ll say this: you will be hard pressed to find anyone who takes the Ryan budget seriously. Even Ryan himself seemed to almost distance himself in an interview with Larry Kudlow on CNBC.

Another thing I heard today worth noting—President Obama making a lot of sense on current fiscal/economic priorities:

My goal is not to chase a balanced budget just for the sake of balance. My goal is how do we grow the economy, put people back to work, and if we do that we are going to be bringing in more revenue.

We’re not gonna balance the budget in ten years because if you look at what Paul Ryan does to balance the budget, it means that you have to voucher-ize Medicare, you have to slash deeply into programs like Medicaid, you’ve essentially got to either tax middle class families a lot higher than you currently are or you can’t lower rates the way he’s promised.

    http://jaredbernsteinblog.com/chin-music-today-and-tomorrow/

    • March 13, 2013 at 10:38 am

The silliness continues….This is the budget that Americans voted against in the last Presidential election, right? One where it had already been determined didn’t add up. So the GOP puts Ryan up with this budget again? One that STILL doesn’t add up and is designed to harm Americans who least need more hurt? One that is being proposed just to appease a minute number of congressional members and that they know has little chance of being passed in the Senate, much less being signed by the President?

And while they go through these useless execises, another self-inflicted crisis is starting to build….

Herkimer and Mohawk…another episode of gun violence. All schools on lock down.

    • 197 57andfemale
      March 13, 2013 at 11:50 am

What the RW, the NRA and RWNJ media have done is created a mindset where all problems are considered life-threatening and the only answer is gun violence to ‘protect’ ourselves

We no longer consider talking through issues, calming down before acting. We are getting to a critical point where we can no longer distinguish between a solvable issue and its most dire result. We as a culture are losing our ability to reason, to deal with others in an effective manner. This culture is devolving, and it’s all due to RWNJ media (thanks, Bill Clinton).

Couple that with an entire generation of kids who look down at their electronic devices instead of learning how to deal with each other. I had dinner over the weekend with my friend, her husband and her 14 and 18 year old daughters (whom I have known their entire lives, with whom I have a lot in common). Dad (also a friend of mine for the last 20 years) and the two girls did nothing but scroll through their phones and text. There was no conversation, no personal interaction. How is this healthy?

The only choices are isolation or ‘protecting’ yourself with a gun.

    Morning Obots!

Still stressed, but less so than yesterday. It doesn’t seem like the missus’ leg is infected, so it’s still a go for surgery on Monday. Thank you all for all your well-wishes.

Chips has graciously added me to the authors’ list for TOD—after grousing about the game Sunday—but I probably won’t post much if at all until after the surgery. Things should be very much calmer at Casa de LL after the beginning of next week.

    Keep calm and carry on!

    • March 13, 2013 at 12:31 pm

My co-worker had this surgery in November (not sure if its exactly the same type your wife is having) and I think though the first week was rough she is doing very well. Lost weight pretty slowly on her type but steadily. Hope your wife has good results also.

Oh, one of the cats got spooked and scratched her. No, we’re not getting rid of the cats; she’d get rid of me first. But good lord, this has been a stressful week.

        • 215 amk for obama
          March 13, 2013 at 1:35 pm

You gotta get rid of that cat. I had the same problem with ours. I picked her up a in power station I was working in about ten years back. She was the runt of the litter and traveled for 10 hours in my car lying on my lap. Daughter unit got attached to her immediately and the next 7 years were a nightmare what with my daughter constantly sneezing around here. After the cat’s passing way (hit n run, bless her soul), I firmly put my foot my down and said, no, more cats. It’s been 3 years since I saw my daughter sneezing constantly. Look at Obamas’ choice of Bo.

          • March 13, 2013 at 1:54 pm

Oh, the cats are generally fine. This cat who did the scratching we raised by hand—he’d been abandoned by his mother, along with his siblings. 99% of the time he’s fine. But he’s a cat, and sometimes things just freak them out. It’s just damned annoying that this happened a week before the surgery. But the wound seems like it isn’t infected, so everything is still on course.
