Making a commitment to a lie

    By Steve Benen

    http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2013/03/13/17297659-making-a-commitment-to-a-lie?lite

Prominent House Republicans are relaunching efforts to stop the Obama administration from giving states waivers under welfare reform.

GOP leaders of several committees reintroduced a bill Thursday that would block the policy, which Republicans say “guts” welfare’s work requirement.

That the Obama administration never undermined the work requirement — and has no intention of doing so in the future — apparently doesn’t matter. What’s necessary, apparently, is to keep the lie alive, even after it’s been exposed as untrue.

Yesterday, the White House criticized the House GOP bill, which has 23 cosponsors, as standing in the way “innovative” state-based programs that could help more welfare recipients into new jobs. The administration called the bill “unnecessary.”

Paul Ryan Has Learned Nothing From His Loss
His new ‘Path to Prosperity’ budget looks a lot like the last one

    BY JONATHAN COHN

    ——————————-

Many people have observed that Ryan’s budget seems politically unrealistic. That’s true, although I am not sure political reality is as important as everybody seems to think.3 But if Republicans are going to endorse this agenda—and there’s no reason to think this budget won’t pass the House, just like the last two Ryan budgets did—then they should be held accountable for it. This budget offers no hint of compromise, even though Republicans have demanded President Obama offer new concessions to accommodate conservatives. This budget also shows no hesitation about undermining vital and popular government programs, even though Republicans say they want to present a more moderate image to the public.

Over the next few days, analysts will pore over the Ryan proposal, just as they will the Democratic proposal that Senator Patty Murray releases on Wednesday. Once the analysts are done, they will undoubtedly discover new wrinkles not apparent right now. But the numbers are a lot less important than the overall message. Budgets are statements of values. And with this budget, Ryan, once again, has revealed what Republican values are: cutting taxes, primarily to benefit the wealthy, while savaging programs on which the poorest Americans rely. It was true before and it’s true now.

Press Secretary Jay Carney is at the podium.

    • 58 Ladyhawke
      March 13, 2013 at 12:55 pm

After Jay Carney makes a detailed opening statement about POTUS, FLOTUS and Business Roundtable Meeting activities, the first questions from the jackals are ….

Will Chained CPI be in the budget. Jackal hears Democrats are concerned about it. Jay says he will not get ahead of PBO’s budget. Says PBO is willing to make hard choices in the interest of compromise.

Next question is who really cancelled the White House tours. The jackal is confused about who asked for the cancellation. Wants clarification.

      • 59 Ladyhawke
        March 13, 2013 at 12:58 pm

Jay Carney has the DEFICIT AS A SHARE OF GDP chart prominently displayed so the jackals can see it. No questions on the chart yet.

      • 60 anniebella
        March 13, 2013 at 12:59 pm

Can’t the lazy jackals get off their ass and go ask the Secret Services?

        • 61 Ladyhawke
          March 13, 2013 at 1:03 pm

I know, can you believe this crap. Why don’t they walk the cat backwards and realize why such actions are necessary in the first place.

      • 62 Ladyhawke
        March 13, 2013 at 1:10 pm

After a gotcha question from CNN about something President Obama said about the debt back in 2008 not matching exactly what he said in 2013, Jay gets a great opportunity to school the jackals using the deficit chart.

      • 63 Ladyhawke
        March 13, 2013 at 1:29 pm

More handwringing from Mara Liasson. Wants to know exactly how the sequester is impacting the White House staff. The obvious implication being PBO is criticizing the sequester but the executive branch is not being impacted. Sounds like a question a Republican would ask. Jay refers her again to the information already provided by the OMB.

    • 64 Ladyhawke
      March 13, 2013 at 1:12 pm

Jonathan Karl carrying water for the GOP on the tours again. Trying to get the cost for PBO going to play golf or travel to Illinois versus the cost of the White House tours.

      • March 13, 2013 at 1:22 pm

GAH! The WH tours are an every day ongoing expense! That’s quite different than whether or not they should restrict or inhibit the travel of the President of the United States. Apples and oranges.

I’m very saddened that the tours have been cancelled. I know POTUS and FLOTUS have done so much personally to open up the people’s house to visitors. So I’m just as heartbroken as others but I understand the decision! Geeze!

      • 66 utaustinliberal
        March 13, 2013 at 1:38 pm

Karl is a twerp. The Secret Service makes the judgement calls about the white house tours and as sad as cancellation is, it costs $74K a week and due to the Sequester, SS has had to furlough a lot of their workers and they need the money to make sure that these employees still receive a paycheck they can use to feed their families, pay their bills, etc.

The media didn’t give a damn about the white house tours before the Sequester and now they want us to believe they care? HA!

    • 67 Ladyhawke
      March 13, 2013 at 1:18 pm

More questions on tours followed by questions about the effectiveness of PBO ‘charm’ offensive. So first the jackals complain that PBO is not schmoozing with the GOP. Now they are questioning the effectiveness of reaching out to the GOP since there are no break throughs to report.

Annie, I think that social programs piss them off, since they believe in the idea of “every man for himself”, and “what’s mine is mine, what’s yours is yours”…… folks in need don’t come into their equation.

    • March 13, 2013 at 1:26 pm

No the question is : Can anyone tell me why republcians hate Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid so much even though their republicans constituents are on it or their parents are on it, or they will be on it in a few years? Their GOP constituents don’t hate it cause they are on it. It boggles my mind how the GOP can with a straight face continue to rail against these entitlements yet the poll numbers continue to show NO SUPPORT for their policies. Yet these dumb ass gop constituents keep voting them back in.

    • 79 jacquelineoboomer
      March 13, 2013 at 1:31 pm

They want it all shoved to the states and, as much as possible, privatized so their lobbyist friends will give them the big payouts – were it ever to happen, which it won’t.

      • 80 susanne
        March 13, 2013 at 3:38 pm

that’s my opinion, too. they want to get their hands on that huge pool of money, and channel it into the pockets of their rich friends. that way it will flow back to them, too, when they become partners in some lame-ass lobby firm after they fail to get re-elected.

  19. March 13, 2013 at 12:58 pm

Republicans are setting up for the next self-inflicted crisis:

    =========

The economy is actually starting to look pretty good. The latest job numbers were strong; the latest manufacturing figures were very encouraging; the housing sector is looking increasingly strong; Wall Street is up; and the new retail-sales numbers were so good, “it’s hard to imagine how the numbers could have been stronger.

All Americans really have to worry about now is their elected lawmakers acting against their interests on purpose.

***House Speaker John Boehner said he would continue to insist that the next debt-ceiling increase be accompanied by matching spending cuts, raising the prospect of a high-stakes showdown when the borrowing limit expires this spring.

***Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said that Republicans will use the expiration of the debt limit this summer as leverage to get President Obama to consider entitlement reforms.

Basically what Republicans are saying is that they’re once again ready to hold the nation hostage, threatening to crash the economy deliberately unless President Obama gives them what they want.

Lets just say they are bluffing. They know OBAMA ain’t playing that game and the fact that he isn’t up for relection but the house and senate GOP are, he isn’t going there with them. So if they decide to play russian roulette with economy not only will they continue to get the blame from the sequester if they crash the economy on top of that. I don’t think Kar Rove or any KOCK brothers will save their asses from getting crushed in 2014. Lets just say they don’t have a leg to stand on with these threats.

      • March 13, 2013 at 1:40 pm

Yeah, but just going through the drama takes a toll, particularly on the middle/working class and the poor, not just on our finances but on our psyche. It is emotionally draining to wonder what the government will and will not do and how it will affect our paycheck or the programs we depend on. As the President says, this is no way to run a country as advanced as the US.

They play these games because they don’t have the same worries as we do.

No, no one is invited yet, but in a few to several months. I’ve got to decide on a computer and I get nervous spending the money on something I don’t know much about. Its a lot of money for us. The one thing hubby won’t help with. I think I’m going with HP. We’ve had this one for ten years. Just can’t update programs for viruses, turbo tax, etc. That’s the only reason we got our last new one. I understand we need a new printer. Won’t be selling our kind of ink. It’s a conspiracy, I tell you, a MF conspiracy. Ten years isn’t bad though. Does anyone on the thread have a MAC? Would it be hard to make the switch? whoa, what going on here?!? cool! so amk, are you able ban hammer chicken littles who take over the comment section day after day worrying and freaking out about every word joe scarborough or howard fineman says? i might be able to read the comments here more again. i’ve been searching for outlets such as o.f.a. where they FOCUS on how best to carry on president obama’s vision into actual results and stay motivated. i’m guessing the comments here now about 10% that, and 90% dread and worry about how the media and republicans lie about everything, as if we didn’t know that already. just a thought…

    • 131 Bill
      March 13, 2013 at 2:04 pm

I doubt if 90% of the comments here are concerned with the dread and worry about how the media and Republicans lie about everything, but it is good to know what is being said in the media. The media sets the agenda for much of the discussion and thoughts on push back can be worthwhile.

      • 132 4morefor44
        March 13, 2013 at 2:32 pm

i disagree. i can save everyone a whole bunch of time right now…the media will say everything president obama does or says is stupid and incompetent, while any republican is presenting a worthwhile opinion. there, no need to watch them. “pushback” is pointless since the owners want all those propagandists to do exactly what they’re doing.

so perhaps we can get back to specific ACTION each one of us can take to make sure we get the House in 2014? organizing for ACTION and positivity is how president obama was elected after all…

Is Paul Ryan an Inflation Nutter?

By Betsey Stevenson & Justin Wolfers

    ————————

Inflation does have distributional effects, and perhaps he’s simply looking to protect those who gain most from price stability. That said, the winners and losers from inflation aren’t as obvious as one might think. It’s not clear why this should be a Republican cause.

Perhaps there’s a short-run political gain to playing Chicken Little during a moment in which the extreme elements of his party remain engaged even as most of the public is tuning out politics. But Ryan is an ambitious character, and surely such extremist views will prove to be a liability when the broader public tunes in to the 2016 election campaign.

The remaining possibility is more frightening. Perhaps Ryan really does believe this stuff. Perhaps the chairman of the House Budget Committee is actually an inflation nutter. Even more scary, perhaps he’s willing to act on his fears.

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) announced that it would bypass en banc review of a recent D.C. Circuit Court decision on the president’s authority to make recess appointments to government offices when the Senate is out of town. Instead, the NLRB will seek review directly in the Supreme Court – where, as Lyle notes, “the chances of review seem strong, given the importance of the issue.”

In a Jan. 25 ruling, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit said that three appointments Obama made to the NLRB last year were invalid.

The ruling meant that the NLRB does not have the required quorum to make decisions, casting doubt on its actions and rulings since the appointments were made in January 2012.

The board’s opening brief to the Supreme Court is due on April 25.

WASHINGTON — The maker of the “47 percent” video that dealt a crushing blow to Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign attempted to publish the footage on the website Daily Kos, but he said he was banned after uploading 10 snippets of video.

“There was some pushback from people you wouldn’t expect to push back,” he told The Huffington Post. “To be banned from Daily Kos — I had been a longtime reader. … That was maybe the biggest surprise.”

His profile is still accessible on Daily Kos, but individual items have been taken down.

The man said that other Daily Kos community members accused him of posting fake videos and didn’t believe his protestations to the contrary. “They later apologized. Kos chastised the community,” the man said.

Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitsas explained in an email to HuffPost that the filmmaker had “posted 6-second clips of audio, without offering any proof or further authentication. The Daily Kos community is hyper-sensitive to people trying to play them for fools, and his claims weren’t borne out by the audio clips he was posting.” (The clips can be found here.)

Moulitsas added, “Had he posted the full video that eventually came out, things would’ve obviously been different.”

I’m getting annoyed with the angle of “depriving children of WH tours” – because any kid I know would be bored touring a building with fancy furniture and paintings. Most kids I know would rather see Ford’s Theater where there was some violent history or look at the cool things in the Smithsonian. I think the kids in the videos are just being coached to look sad and depressed. They don’t really care if they see the WH at that age. 🙄

WILL THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA REPORT ON THIS SEQUESTER DEVELOPMENT??

Military tuition assistance snagged by sequestration

    By Steve Benen

    ——————————

It’s not altogether clear whether the sequester is the only reason for the TA cuts, and the branches may be facing unrelated budget pressures, but the timing certainly suggests there’s a connection — both the Army and the Marines announced the move shortly after the sequestration deadline passed — and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) said one the sequester helped lead to cuts.

Student Veterans of America’s executive director, Michael Dakduk added, “It is utterly unacceptable that the first casualties of Congress’ inability to act are education benefits for servicemembers.”

IAVA also noted there are other programs for veterans that help with education costs, but the fact Tuition Assistance is being cut at all is a problem.

Fox Liberal Guest Follows Up Tense Exchange By Telling MSNBC: Hannity’s ‘Upset The Economy’s Rebounding’

    by Andrew Kirell

    —————————-

One day after she battled Sean Hannity over his slamming of President Obama as unemployment numbers fall, frequent Fox liberal guest Caroline Heldman headed on over to MSNBC to tell Al Sharpton that the Fox conservative host is “upset” that the economy is looking up.

During a tense exchange on Hannity Monday evening, Heldman openly objected to Hannity’s characterization that liberals are putting a “positive spin” on the recently-revealed 7.7% unemployment rate. She eventually mocked him for “suddenly” being concerned with the well-being of the poor and elderly.

Me too. Well, Pope Francis I is for the poor, against the homos, and will baptize children of single mothers. Besides that, he is very conservative.

      • March 13, 2013 at 3:50 pm

Just read he was Franciscan. Not sure what it means.

          and Jesuit.

All that means more conservatism, the type that benefits men over women if you ask me.

Jesuit = an order of male priests in the Catholic religion
Franciscan = Catholic priests who follow the teachings and the discipline of St Francis of Assiss

This resumes the rules: To observe the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, living in obedience without anything of our own, and in chastity. Brother Francis promises obedience and reverence to the Lord Pope Honorius and his canonically elected successors, and to the Roman Church; and the rest of the brothers are obliged to obey Francis and his successors.

Just to clarify as a former seminarian and recovering Catholic, the new pope Cardinal Bergoglio is a member of the Jesuit order. The Jesuit order is probably one of the most liberal in the Church both in terms of social justice and cultural issues. He is not Franciscan. He chose the name Francis (which is also my confirmation name) which bodes well if he follows the values of St. Francis of Assisi. My best guess he will be conservative on theological and cultural issues, but very liberal on social justice and standing with the poor and disadvantaged. He sets an example by living in a plain apartment, making his own meals, and takes the bus to work.

Good to know. I hope the Pope will be open to contraception at a minimum. That’s social justice for me.
