AP: Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords returned to the scene of the horrific shooting that wounded her and killed six people two years ago, urging senators Wednesday to pass background checks for gun purchases in her first public event at the site since the rampage.
Giffords, who is still recovering from her injuries, spoke fewer than 20 words in the parking lot of the Safeway grocery store in her hometown of Tucson in a brief but emotional call for stricter gun control measures.
“Be bold. Be courageous,” Giffords said. “Please support background checks.”

Does anyone really think the President of the United States, the leader of the free world coordinates the White House touring schedule? If the idiot media would bother to read or just ask someone, they would have learned that the Secret Service canceled the tours. Secret Service does a lot of over time, so they made schedule adjustments to cut down on overtime expenses to avoid furloughs. Of course, that makes too much sense.

Actually, it’s not amk. If you read the procedure of the ‘nuclear’ (aka Constitutional option) it can be done at anytime and the process can be initiated by any Senator. None of them will do it unless they know they have the votes (51 not 60). You can read about the procedure here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_option Key paragraphs are #3-4 under “Change to Senate Rules.” Not only can the procedure be used to end a filibuster, if it is successful it sets a precedent. At that point, the only way to reverse the precedent would be, in the next Congressional session to change the Senate rules to revert to enabling a bunch of domestic terrorists to destroy our democracy.

Lawmakers Think Voters are More Conservative
A fascinating new study finds that politicians significantly overestimate the conservatism of their constituents on several key issues, including universal health care and same-sex marriage, the Huffington Post reports.
For example, a survey of voters found they supported gay marriage and universal health care by 10 percentage points more than their own politicians had estimated in a separate survey. For conservative politicians, the spread was near 20 percentage points.
The authors conclude: “Most politicians appear to believe they are representing constituents who are considerably different than their actual constituents.”

President Obama dined with Republican senators at the Jefferson Hotel in DC Wednesday night and the outcome seemed somewhat positive, at least as far as the senators were concerned, according to a pool report:
Pool witnessed McCain walked out of the meeting at 8:41 pm. A reporter asked how the meeting went. McCain said just fine and flashed a thumbs up. Coburn and other senators, Burr, Toomey and Corker emerged. Coburn made the same gesture — a thumbs up sign.
As POLITICO’s Dylan Byers reports, the White House itself has treated the details of the dinner like state secrets.
UPDATE: The White House appears to have divuged one detail, per another pool report that the president picked up the check: “The White House said POTUS paid for the dinner.”

Jovie, I am not at all impressed by the GOP’s new cooperative spirit. They’re trying to escape blame for the sequester and want to make certain people can’t point to their obstruction as the problem. If you’ll notice, everytime they seem to be advancing on a piece of legislation, someone gums up the works. They almost reach consensus on background checks, and suddenly Senator Colbert has a problem with a register; consensus mounts on immigration and a stalwart supporter suddenly flipflops. Brennan comes up for a vote and Paul filibusters.
They just want to give the appearance of cooperation while they burn time. I don’t believe they have any intention of working with the President…they just want to be able to claim they tried and suggest he is the problem. Somebody will have a problem with a word, the salad fork or something. I hope I’m wrong.

I needed that today – thanks df – I had some wonderful help from airline staff when my mother was dying – nothing was too much trouble – they tried everything they could and held bookings on multiple flights without charge – to fit with when we could even get to the airport.
Sometimes we need to hear the good things that people do for each other….not this sophomoric, hating, constant battling. Glad that I could put a smile on your face and lift you up today, 99….glad they helped so much for you when you needed it too.
We actually have a rather amazing single payer medical system at times (it does have some faults – but this was a prime example of how good it can be). My mother was flown via air ambulance (zero cost to us) to the state capital when she became seriously ill – I had to firstly get to the little town where they lived – and then get myself and my dad to said city. needless to say – we had to pay – but the airline staff certainly helped.

Dems reject Paul’s offer to end filibuster

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) Wednesday evening offered to end his filibuster on the nomination of John Brennan to be the director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
About seven hours into his talking filibuster, Paul asked unanimous consent that the Senate hold an up-or-down vote on Brennan on Thursday. But he also wanted a vote on a resolution that would have expressed the sense of the Senate that use of drones to target American citizens clearly violates the rights of U.S. citizens. The resolution also asks President Obama to give Congress a report on the drone program.
Rand Paul & the other neophytes on the Senate floor are claim civil liberties, except when it comes to a woman’s body: Filibuster This Mofo!
Does anyone else get the idea that the RWNJs want this to go before the current supreme court – so the right to abortion can be repealed. They want EVERY state to have no abortion rights – so poor women can die in the attempt. That way they get rid of the mother and don’t have to see thousands of children living in poverty or living with no hope of long term survival because of forced pregnancy.
Is it wrong to hope that one day they will be impacted by these laws – then again they can always PAY to get a safe abortion for family members & never pay the price.

Instead, they chose to waste the Senate’s time with a useless filibuster. But lo and behold! The holier than thou progressives are cheering them on.

Rand Paul is a tool but (and am thinking this is not really going to make me popular here), I’m VERY uneasy about the drones program. I understand that we are at war. I understand war is ugly and no one wishes for it. I appreciate the fact that POTUS is fighting to end these wars, that are endless and in the case of one, was totally unnecessary ( Iraq). However, I feel there is an overuse of drones that, if left unchecked, has the potential to turn into a nightmarish crutch for subsequent administrations. We all trust President Obama to use the program wisely, but what if, God forbid, some crazy guy like Ted Cruz gets to the presidency? Would I want that psychopath anywhere near a weapon that some barely legal kid in a basement is controlling, bombing villages or just about anywhere in the planet (including our own backyards), all willy nilly and without anyone knowing?? Can we just imagine what a war-crazy fool a la Cheney could do? Forget the brown folks in the Middle East, I’d worry about my own behind…
The Presidents number one job is to keep us safe. Nowhere in his job resume states that he bomb you at Starbucks, if you don’t agree with his policies.
A lot of what we are seeing, I question the motive. Seems like another opportunity to weaken and smear the President.
Meanwhile, Gun control legislation is losing steam, Immigration reform is in the backburner, but Austerity is front and center.

Also, if you talk about Drones, Gun control is stalled. If you talk about Drones, immigration reform is stalled etc.

I TRUST President Obama with measured use of the drones program because I have come to completely trust his judgement in a lot of matters (even being as anti-war as I am). I DO NOT TRUST a President Bush, Cruz, Christie, Jindal, Paul or whatever yahoo might win the presidency 4 years from now to NOT abuse the program. I just don’t. We will need checks, sorry. But I agree that for now, because I trust the man in power, the other causes you mentionned (gun control, immigration, education etc..) can take precedence. Why would any american president, whether a rethug or a dem or a libertarian or whatever flavor, conduct drone warfare right in their own backyard thereby killing himself and his party politically for ever ? That argument doesn’t make any sense to me at all.

Now, there were rumors that drones were being used in the hunt of that LA killer, Donner or something or other, or to get that kid out in Alabama who had been abducted by that crazy gun nut in a bunker. I doubt they were used but I can absolutely see a Rethug president trying to make the case that local law enforcement could certainely use the help (not bombing but sniffing criminals out for example). I can see 45% of our own citizens AGREEING that maybe that wouldn’t be such a bad thing. Some Senator ( Miss Graham??)just the other day was saying that he needed his AK47s in cases of “roving gangs” like those in Katrina. Do you not forsee a nutso Governor asking for a little drone help from his buddy at the White House to control the “looters” after a natural disaster? It is not that far stretched to me at all.

Last night Rachel said whenever she discussed drones she received a great amount of hate mail. She had a very strange smile on her face saying she loved the hate mail and to keep it coming. I found the comment very distasteful.

Yesterday while in the car, I heard Thom Hartman read (word for word) the letter from Eric Holder. In the (hugely) hypothetical (and hugely unlikely……Holder stressed that) example of using drones in the US (against American citizens), he used the examples of Japanese attacking us at Pearl Harbor and, of course, 9/11. Why don’t people get that?????!!!!!!
When I got up, I put TV on Bill Press. Only took literally couple of minutes before I changed it to local news. SAD!

If the Merkley filibuster reform proposal — which included requiring a talking filibuster — had been adopted, it would not have eliminated the 13 hours of lunacy that was displayed, would it? Short of completely doing away with it, what changes could have been made to the filibuster to make it a tool used as an exception and not the norm; changes that would have had a realistic expectation of being adopted?
Just trying to understand what else in the proposed reform would have stopped the obstruction that has become the MO for the RWNJ. Is it the filibuster or the abuse?
I believe that the GOP/RWNJ would find other means of obstruction (some of which we’ve seen with the confirmation hearings) because their one goal is to hinder President Obama in his efforts to move the country forward.
You have a very good point. I saw no point in Wyden, Merkley’s fellow Senator from Oregon, taking part last night other than grandstanding. PBO does not need any hits from Democrats. It seems Wyden could have worked out his questions in private with the WH.

I heard a caller to the Ed’s radio program give this analogy: She has a good friend who grew up in AL. This friend lived talked about the town leaders filling the swimming pools with cement (when desegregation was declared) to keep the black children from being able to swim in them. The caller equated that to what the Republicans are doing to PO agenda/legacy………all the obstruction is the cement in the pools. I think that is a profound analogy.
