By the authority vested in me as President by the laws of the United States of America, and in accordance with section 251A of the Balanced Budget and Emergency Deficit Control Act, as amended (the “Act”), 2 U.S.C. 901a, I hereby order that budgetary resources in each non-exempt budget account be reduced by the amount calculated by the Office of Management and Budget in its report to the Congress of March 1, 2013.

Pursuant to sections 250(c)(6), 251A, and 255(e) of the Act, budgetary resources subject to sequestration shall be new budget authority, unobligated balances of defense function accounts carried over from prior fiscal years, direct spending authority, and obligation limitations.

All sequestrations shall be made in strict accordance with the requirements of section 251A of the Act and the specifications of the Office of Management and Budget’s report of March 1,

Barack Obama

I feel like I’m in a very bad nightmare………it’s all completely insane. After all we as a nation have been through since the great recession of 2008…….what are we to make of the future of our country with these complete self-serving idiots in Congress?

    • March 1, 2013 at 9:42 pm

What makes it surreal is that while people are going to lose their jobs, seniors and poor children will go hungry and uncared for, the military fighting on the ground will get a minimal increase – and pain will be felt by millions while Congress gets paid six figure salaries for 126 days of “work” this year… the media is more concerned about whether the President got the mind meld reference right. It’s surreal.

I’m with you, Meta. A nightmare, indeed. Rachel has been covering the emergency manager moves in Michigan and tonight revealed that 49% of AA in MI have lost democracy in their towns.
GOP wrecking crew destroying our economy.
I usually look for the silver lining but these things are totally alarming.

I don’t see how anyone can believe the ReThugalian/Teabagger GOP gives damn about this country. President Obama instituted programs/policies and legislation that brought this country back from one of the worst financial crisis it has experienced in over 70yrs.

The economy is recovering (slow, but recovering) and now, these GOP domestic terrorist are hoping destroy all this hard earned progress. The majority of the msm are cosigning for the GOP destructive behavior.

Here we are with a recovering auto industry, increase in manufacturing, a rebounding housing market, yet these insane Republicans, with their media enablers want to send us back to 2008! All because they are angry that the majority of Americans voted to re-elect President Obama against the wishes of the media and the GOP.

Absolutely despicable, Bob! Let’s all demand that no Republican member of Congress be paid because Republicans are more interested in destroying the government and the country than they are in taking care of the needs of all Americans. I am a tax payer and I don’t want my tax dollars spent on paying the salaries of these traitors and their staff! If Republicans don’t want to govern then they have no business running for Congress. The last time I checked, Congress was on of the three branches of our U.S. government. The way Congressional Republicans are behaving, they seem to think that the U.S. government is comprised of only the Executive branch. We need members Of Congress who take seriously their role and responsibilities as members of the U.S. government.

That’s the most depressing thing Theo, and the greatest fear after this. I was stupid and naive enough to think they might ease up on their obstruction – and hate – after PBO’s re-election because they could no longer bring him down. But this just proves they’re as venomous and destructive as ever.

People will be hurt, and damage to the [global] economy will be done – but eventually, the GOP are going to pay a price for what they’ve done to this country over the past 40 years. Eventually people will wake up when it gets too painful. They have to.

The way I see it, is that these Republican members of Congress, and their media enablers, are intent on using every means to punish the whole country, just because the majority of Americans voted twice for President Obama. They failed to defeat him in 2008. They were absolutely sure that they would defeat him in 2012 because they threw everything at him. After they failed in 2012 to deny him a second term, they decided to do everything to make it impossible for him to govern in order to tannish his legacy. Somehow, I have this feeling that in the end they will fail at this too. If all of supporters dedicated ourselves to do everything we can to defeat Republicans in 2014, President Obama may still accomplish his most important agenda items before he leaves office in January, 2017

    Perfect read for right now.

You can’t afford to remain ignorant of the details of Sequestration.

The consequences of Sequestration are dire in the extreme, it was designed to be that way, and in point of fact if the consequences aren’t extreme then congress is in violation of the law.

By definition, sequestration means that the United States congress has failed in its primary duty – which is why a significant fraction of congress is trying to pretend like this whole thing wasn’t their idea in the first place and that the effects will be limited.

Conservatives will, in the end, make a deal. Very likely they’ll end up giving President Obama what he wants, at least to some extent. But not before they’ve made their point, not before they’ve caused gas prices to go up and stock prices to fall, not before they’ve risked yet another downgrade to America’s credit rating. Not before they’ve idled 700,000 American workers who can least afford it and not before they’ve driven the wedge that divides this country just a little deeper into its heart. But eventually, they’ll deal, they have no choice because they’ve already lost and they know it. And that’s what galls them the most.

Every American, left and right, should be appalled that it’s finally come down to this.

Every American, left and right, should be appalled by this continuous and unending state of self inflicted crisis.

And it is long past time to stop playing games.

It is long past time for congress to stop causing the problems and start fixing them.

    • 52 theo67
      March 1, 2013 at 9:46 pm

It’s also long past time for everyone to lay the blame at the feet of the Republican party – not just a blanket statement about “congress”. What the Republicans have done – to the world economy – is criminal. Other countries are battling to crawl out of the recession – the US just blew a recovery that was building momentum. It’s really sad.

Hi Chips – I posted at the end of the last thread – still can’t think of anything else to say – so hope you don’t mind if I repeat myself (with a slight modification). I have so much admiration and respect for your President – the GOP should be reminded Mandela survived 30 years of hate with his honesty & integrity intact – and the people loved him even more.

Hello everyone – I can’t think of much at all to say today – except that I never thought – for the last 50 years – that a group of politicians in a so-called democracy could hate one person so much, that they would bring down their own country.

Perhaps since the end of the USSR, some US politicians have thought too much about being the leaders of the world – and too little about what is happening to the people at home. It appears to me that President Obama has been the first President since Kennedy to successfully address issues of major importance to the people of the US – and put them above war mongering and access to oil. The GOP survive on fear and the Bush Doctrine.

“Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant to step the ocean and crush us at a blow? Never! All the armies of Europe, Asia, and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest, with a Bonaparte for a commander, could not by force take a drink from the Ohio or make a track on the Blue Ridge in a trial of a thousand years. At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer. If it ever reach us it must spring up amongst us; it cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen we must live through all time or die by suicide.”

“It is to deny what the history of the world tells us is true, to suppose that men of ambition and talents will not continue to spring up amongst us. And when they do, they will as naturally seek the gratification of their ruling passion as others have done before them. The question then is, Can that gratification be found in supporting and maintaining an edifice that has been erected by others? Most certainly it cannot. Many great and good men, sufficiently qualified for any task they should undertake, may ever be found whose ambition would aspire to nothing beyond a seat in Congress, a gubernatorial or a presidential chair; but such belong not to the family of the lion or the tribe of the eagle. What! think you these places would satisfy an Alexander, a Caesar, or a Napoleon? Never! Towering genius disdains a beaten path. It seeks regions hitherto unexplored. It sees no distinction in adding story to story upon the monuments of fame erected to the memory of others. It denies that it is glory enough to serve under any chief. It scorns to tread in the footsteps of any predecessor, however illustrious. It thirsts and burns for distinction; and if possible, it will have it, whether at the expense of emancipating slaves or enslaving freemen. Is it unreasonable, then, to expect that some man possessed of the loftiest genius, coupled with ambition sufficient to push it to its utmost stretch, will at some time spring up among us? And when such an one does, it will require the people to be united with each other, attached to the government and laws, and generally intelligent, to successfully frustrate his designs.Distinction will be his paramount object, and although he would as willingly, perhaps more so, acquire it by doing good as harm, yet, that opportunity being past, and nothing left to be done in the way of building up, he would set boldly to the task of pulling down.”

We were warned. We have been witnessing it, in real time, since SCOTUS stole the 2000 election. It accelerated on 20Jan2009 and we are the only ones who can bring it to a halt. We have much work to do, but we have a great President to stand shoulder to shoulder with as we crush the most persistent and pervasive threat to our Union we have seen. Jeff Davis wanted to succeed from America; the Kochs and their fellow plutocrats want to OWN America.

At last poll, 71% of the country didn’t even know what the sequester was all about! It’s pretty pathetic.

sequester the salaries of Congress for non-performance of duties.

This petition asks that Congressional salaries and benefits be withheld for non-performance of duties. It was the duty of Congress to negotiate, in good faith, a reasonable compromise and pass legislation necessary to avoid punitive cuts in salaries, services and social programs, the sequester, that serve and protect the American people. They have failed to do so, putting the very citizens they were elected to represent, and our nascent economic recovery, at risk.

He said he had worked this job ALL his life (since high school) and had held onto the job hoping he would be able to retire (sounded like he was in middle age).

Since he was laid off he has applied for jobs without much success.

He was really worried about the effect of sequester on his unemployment pay. He said the unemployment office had already given them letters and told them to stand by because the office did not know what would happen.

By the end of the interview, this guy’s voice was breaking and I suspected he was crying (or trying not to cry). He said that he thinks the 538 (?) in DC where doing this because they had no clue about the circumstances on the ground & they did not care..

I don’t know if someone can pick up that clip. After a long day, he sent tears rolling down my face – real people with real fears & gop is playing with them because they hate PBO so much!

This is where the mainstream media does a severe disservice to the public. Instead of giving airtime to Mitt Romney, a failure who hasn’t worked an honest day in his life, they should be giving airtime to real middle-class Americans who are being harmed by Republican policies and obstruction. The people who listen to NPR are already convinced. But, these people like your steel worker in Ohio will suffer silently, just like the 4000 dead American service men and women who were denied public acknowledgement of their deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq by the Bush Administration. What is the purpose of this media?!

      df, they can do it.

The procedures exist in the House and Speaker Pelosi and WhipHoyer know their trade as well as any Member of Congress, ever. McConnell, in filibustering yesterday, completely undermined whatever trust Senators Reid, Durbin, Levin, et al., might have been willing to extend him.

So, if Speaker Pelosi garners sufficient Discharge Petition signers, bill after bill, then they must be voted in the House. Boehner and Cantor can’t stop it from happening.

As those bills start passing, I fully expect Senator Reid will not allow McConnell to filibuster. We are going to see some amazing action between now and Nov 2014 and any R that doesn’t live in a totally red district is either going to participate in the ‘common sense caucus’ or be looking for a job come 2015.

Yes and that means Speaker Pelosi only needs 18 ‘common sense’ Rs to reach the threshold as long as all Ds hang together. From the VAWA vote yesterday we learn several key facts: Zero D’s voted against; 1 D did not vote; & 87 Rs voted for passage. I have no doubt that Speaker Pelosi and Whip Hoyer know who among those 87 R are eager to cooperate on major issues like never allowing the debt ceiling to be used for brinkmanship, like closing a bunch of loopholes, like creating JOBS (particularly infrastructure, manufacturing and clean energy jobs in THEIR CDs 🙂 ).

Happened to turn on C-Span; they were running a press conference from earlier today with Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter on the “automatic defense cuts” under sequestration.

I heard him say that starting tomorrow and through the year, the effects of the sequester will be “unmistakable.” He said that what will come out of the sequester, on top of the Continuing Resolution, which he said has its own set of problems, will be “abrupt, deleterious, and a very real detriment to Defense.” He mentioned the civilian population has had a pay freeze for years, and now will be furloughed on top of that.

So, I changed the channel to save my sanity.

I saw the press conference with Hagel and Carter yesterday. Scary. But I’m near a military base and they have already begun making cuts and changes. As for how the military votes…predominately Republican. I commented the other day that a group of soldiers told me recently that they finally realized the one hurting them is not President Obama, but Congress. One wonders how they can be so disconnected, but every base I have ever visited (half a dozen) tunes every television to Fox News.

Obama to refocus attention on immigration, gun control
    Source: Washington Post

President Obama signaled Friday a desire to refocus his attention on second-term priorities, such as immigration and gun control, after weeks of fruitless wrangling with Republicans over his fiscal agenda.

“What I want to try to do is make sure that we’re constantly focused . . . on how are we helping American families succeed,” Obama said at a news conference after failing to strike a deal with congressional leaders to avert $85 billion in mandatory budget cuts.

“Deficit reduction is part of that agenda, and an important part, but it’s not the only part,” he said. “And I don’t want us to be paralyzed on everything just because we disagree on this one thing.”

For a president who has bemoaned Washington’s penchant for lurching between self-manufactured political crises over the past two years, the inability to compromise with Republicans appeared to leave him simultaneously exasperated and emboldened.

Bravo, bravo, Bobfr! I greatly admire your ability to communicate TRUTH using very few words. I also deeply admire your persistence in telling the TRUTH to any one who cares to listen. Today, the country must never forget that it’s our own people, who call themselves Republicans, who had no qualms about damaging our economy and inflicting harm to many loyal Americans, including those in the military. I wish many more of our physicians cared as much as you do about the well being of our country. Bob, you are truly an American treasure! This country needs more doctors like you (and non doctors as well) who take seriously the oath to do no more harm to the people in their care. Today, Republicans failed the elementary test of governance. Rather than trying to help people they were elected to serve, they instead chose to harm them.

It’s so sad. People are so stupid. Of course, compared to the overall budget, it’s a small amount, but it’s how it’s being done. They’re always comparing government expenses to household expenses…suppose you cut your home budget in the same ridiculous manner. Your utilities would be off, your car repossessed and your home foreclosed on, because they don’t take partial payments.

Except for the dedication of Rosa Parks’ statue on Monday, this has not been a pleasant, uplifing week for us. Right now it looks pretty bleak. In all my 73 years I have not seen any political party act in such a treasonous nasty way. I have experienced all the feelings expressed on this blog with everyone; anger, fear, disgust, antipathy, anger, anger, anger, disappointment in fellow Americans…..I probably cannot even accurately name all of the emotions. I am one who tends to see the glass half full, not half empty, but I admit that is a little difficult today. But……I know that we are stronger than the haters, and the President has more support than the nasty sequesterites.
I feel so deeply for people whose lives are going to be shattered, yes, shattered by this horror, and I just heard turtle McConnell just laughing on the TV,”Do I think a 2.4% decrease in federal spending is going to hurt? chuckle, chuckle, of course not.” NO HEART!!!
So…….we have to work for 2014 and also pressure our Congress critters to do the right thing. I see that many are already acting and working to improve the situation.
We know what we stand for, we know what is right, and I firmly believe that right does triumph over evil.
We will keep the faith and work, and so will millions of other Americans.
My husband was at the gym yesterday, and a woman we know asked about the election and he said how happy we were, and she said “I just love President Obama,” and this is in Oklahoma. I think that feeling is wider spread than the MSM will ever admit.
Think I’ll stop this and write the Pesident with my total suport.

We must not give in to anger and frustration. Our President needs us now more than ever. We must be the voice of the people who will be hurt. We must remind the Republicans every day of the harm they have brought to the country and we must let them know that we support President Obama’s ideas. Let us tell them that we appreciate our President working tirelessly to achieve a better life for every American. He is truly the President of the people. He does not pursue partisan advantage, he acts responsibly and courageously in the face of mindless opposition based on nothing more than hate. But he is OUR President and we will stand by him and fight with him for everything we believe in. And we will stand firm and work hard to bring about the defeat of a treasonous minority that would sacrifice the well being of the country rather than cooperate with a duly elected President.

the republican argument ever since reagan, and i mean every republican you know in your life argues for this now, is that we haven’t done ENOUGH “trickle-down” economics. nevermind that for the last couple of decades, we’ve had the most trickle-down based economy in america’s history, BY FAR, they still say the reason the economy is so precarious and debt is so high is that we haven’t given trickle-down enough of a chance! and “the news” has that message embedded in every story they ever report.

now on the other hand, when america was the strongest its ever been economically, the 1950s up to the 1980s, we were the most socialistic we’ve ever been in terms of economic policy. before the republican/reagan/trickle down policy took over in 1980, america was the world’s largest LOANER of money. since reagan and the republicans, we quickly flipped that to become the world’s largest BORROWER of money, yet they still argue that’s because we haven’t given their ideas enough time or gone far enough with it. that’s what we’re seeing today. pure, utter INSANITY. of course, our president has always been very aware of this and is precisely what he’s been changing, and why he said this:

as president obama is always saying, “we tried your ideas. they didn’t work!” yet the “news” keep enabling these traitors to the constitution we call “republicans.”

Hello 99ts, If Imay add to that: I just lost three paragraphs of encouraging post here to share because I forgot to charge up before I left out earlier this evening. Just to summarize it all. “NO WEAPONS FORMED SHALL PROSPER AGAINST US”
This storm that is upon us is going to work out for the good. I know it. I feel it.
This ugly evilness is so deep rooted, vile, and hateful.
It has to be shown to all who voted for it, applauded it, cajoled it, high-fived it behind closed doors, told others to stay at home and not vote, got and getting pay- offs for it, lied for it…..that there time has come. They have to be exposed and some of us will be hurt by it because we will never see a president who cares for them as a people and a country. This a rare quality. All the while he is handles it with humility and grace.
They are all but finished and they are going out full forced this weekend allocerthe air waves. Instead of repeating what they are saying, we should commit ourselves to send POB a positive tweet, e-mail, FB all weekend to encourage him as we encourage ourselves and each other.
They are going to be doing what they are paid to do. That is their job.
We are to get back on our posts as if it was election night stand tall, strong and support our President and show him how we have his back. Even the ones who did not vote for him should step up. The emprogs and PL should-man up/ woman- up or get out of the way.

This is not the time to get angry nor have a pity party. We all should know their script and their plan by now. The same game plan….hate on Obama. They came to kill, steal and destroy.

We have a country to save and a President who cares.

We won! We should start acting like winners!

LDS – I’m so sorry you lost your post – pffft covers it! I love Jim because of both the truth and humor in his posts & I love Chips because of all that Optimism. I think for today I simply feel infuriated at the GOP and cannot believe they would do what they do to your country.

I have no doubt that all at TOD will lead the optimism and support for PBO. I remember when quoting negative media reports was “banned” before the election – tomorrow I can probably face that again. Today I am amazed that the President can still be the wonderful man that he is – despite all that is thrown.

  60. 212 LDS
    March 2, 2013 at 2:35 am

No problem b/c of the post. So glad it was not b/c of a sink hole……can you imagine that?
He is your president as well. You do not have to live in the USA to appreciate, respect and claim this gentle soul.
That is just one of the reasons I admire him and his family. They are so genuinely real.

He is so ahead of these fools. But he has had enough of playing their games and so have the people that voted for him.
When I think back on the SOTU speech, I cringed to think those hypocrites sat there and smiled, stood up clapping on cue when they checked to see if their posses were standing. Spineless hypocrites already had their marching orders after the election.
This was their last chance to do the right thing. They will turn on each other before this is all over. It’s just a matter of time.

Thank you for all of your insight and wisdom here. I enjoy your posts very much.

Billions of budget cut for 99% Jobs lose,They will feel this
higher Tax rate for the 1%- Nothing lose, they will not feel because of the loopholes.
The increase tax rate will never be paid because of the Tax loopholes.
We the poor and middle class are paying for this mess the Rich made.
The GOP should be shaking in their boots there should be so much political fire on them. Where is the Outrage? not in the News they are on the Republican team, not in the Democratic Party they goes on TV and bash Obama, Not in some American people they see a Black Man not a Leader, that include some white Democratic (They see Boy president not Mr president) Is there HOPE for this Country? Where are the American people that are yelling enough! , The Rich have bought this whole country including the Supreme court the only thing they need back is the POTUS office. They will rule the world again, and giving people peanuts while they live off the fat of the land.

Good morning, everyone. I’ve been inspired and angered by your commentary about the sequestration. You probably won’t be surprised to learn that I have a different take on sequestration. I think it’s just one piece in a bigger puzzle, or perhaps I should say plot. While I hate to promote my own site, my views are too lengthy to write here. Of course, I could just be paranoid and crazy so, I’d really like to know what you think.

      I can feel your piece……

I do agree that it is part of a larger puzzle but the puzzle is not new…we have been fighting that plot for years…and we have had victories as well…we have to look at the whole picture….

one thing that we have to remember is that the struggle for Freedom and Democracy is ongoing….it requires diligience…perseverance…. courage and a plan…

Altho this sequester has been foisted on us…i know that PBO has a plan to move the country Forward…but he will need our help…we cannot become demoralized….

      YES WE CAN!!

      Trust Barack….

I have read your take and yes they have a bigger goa as you indicate.

But remember, these are the same ppl who swore PBO would never be elected and later when 2012 came to be re-elected did ALL they could to stop it.

Much as PBO’s election and re-election has revealed the real motives of so many, it has aslo demonstrated something very encouraging namely: more people than we suspect can see the true intetions of the O-haters like you do and while they may not have a chance to voice their revulsion about it, they are not signing on. That is why many in the media were suprised on re-election night with the vote of the silent pragmatists.

by forcing the sequester, these foolish short-sighted republicans have just provided many PBO’s supporters with the motivation to stop slacking and get into the fight to throw the gop out.

see you gop fools at the ballot because I HAVE to double my volunteering for OFA.

Yes they have to go, 2014 we have to get the House back to the Democrats and hold onto the Senate. It is clear their hate for this President is greater than any so call love they have for this country.
