Well, here’s a plausible explanation for the three Dem’s who defected on the sequester:
The three votes Democrats lost—Hagan, Landrieu and Pryor—are all up for re-election next year, but I’m guessing their opposition had as much do to with cuts in ag subsidies as the bill’s revenue measures, which Republicans are going to try to spin as toxic to red-state voters.
If Harry Reid was an effective leader, there should have been ways to secure these votes. Still wouldn’t have been enough but it would have been a whole lot better.
You may be giving the voters in those three states more credit than they deserve. All three states are low information red states. The three believe they will maintain their Democratic base and are playing to the red necks who hate PBO hoping to capture some of the old line southern Democrats who still exist to a small degree.
Oh, trust me, I don’t believe that their action was excusable in any way. I thought it worth mentioning, as part of the mix. I don’t know what the answer is to these faux Dem’s in these states. They have been absolutely awful on all issues that would move the country forward.

So I’m lying here on my sick bed (sick couch really) and going through email. Message after message starts “Tell Obama,”, “Don’t let Obama…”, “Make Obama…” All from progressive/liberal/Democratic organizations. Even though I’ve supported them in the past, I am deleting without reading now. I am not going to order or make PBO do anything, because I trust him. I tried to think of how I’d feel if these emails had arrived in the Bush years: “Tell Bush”, “Make Bush”. I probably would have signed the petition or made the call. Of course it would have done no good at all. Is some of this ordering-the-president stuff because people felt so powerless during that time? And despite PBO’s steady progress they just don’t trust him yet to do the right and possible thing?
I’m with you Mary. I pay no attention to those emails. If it says “Tell the Republicans in Congress…..” I pay attention. Do these people still not realize that it is Congress’s duty to legislate, to write the laws, the President cannot legislate them himself? These people needed to have sat in the classroom of my excellent American Government teacher, Mr. Snyder many years ago! We all listened to him…..he was a coach and handsome…..so we learned a lot. (He was a coach who defied coach stereotypes) I worked VERY hard in that class, but enjoyed it. AND, I know the differences between the duties of the three branches of our federal government. Scalia needs to take the course too!

He was going on and on about what PO should do……mainly saying he should become the angry black man……said he has a right to be angry after the treatment he’s gotten the past four years. Then, he started on what he should do about the sequester and get this–PO should write a bill and then make Congress pass it……only has to be one sentence to stop the sequester!! God Almighty, yes, Carolyn, Mike P. needs to take that government class! Reminded me of the WHPC last week asking if he couldn’t do an executive order. You cannot fix stupid!!!!!!!!!!! BTW, I changed the station and listened to contemporary Christian music. Much better. 🙂

Okay, Roberto di Matteo was the Chelsea manager at the start of the season. He got the job after leading the team to its miraculous win in the Champions League last May as interim coach.
This season started out a bit roughly, but not too badly. However, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich makes the late George Steinbrenner look like a paragon of patience. Roberto was axed.
Then, in a moment of what I can only infer is insanity, the powers that be at Chelsea hired one of the few coaches guaranteed to incite the Chelsea faithful against the team; i.e., Rafa Benitez. Di Matteo had been a player as well as coach, and was loved in the stands. Rafa coached Liverpool, and handed Chelsea a couple of sharp losses in the Champions League back in the 00’s. It would be like Tommy Lasorda being hired to manage the Yankees.
So, the Chelsea faithful let Rafa know every single game that he’s not loved. And he’s not even the permanent manager; he was hired as “interim” manager, always with the thought that he would be replaced in May at the end of the season. And Rafa is not the most, um, stable of folks. So, he finally broke down yesterday.
Between Chelsea and the Lakers, it’s been a long sporting winter for me.
I remember during Champions League, following the win they were all so happy. But sounds like Abramvich (is that crazy Ukrainian?) is competing w/ Brooklyn Nets owner Prokhorov as who can be the Putin of the sporting world. At least Prokhorov’s worst exploits are shipping a bunch of escorts for Davos winter meetings!
Roman’s greatest goal was to win the Champions League. And he still fired the manager who brought it to him. Sighs.

Noam Scheiber nails it indeed. Many people say race is a factor. No doubt, but I’ve always believed a big factor is his ascendency to the presidency from his position as the Senator ranked 49th in terms of seniority. And the fact that he had the “NERVE” to beat the wife of an ex-president !!!!!!!! So not only he wasn’t part of the establishment, but he beat the dream candidate of the establishment !!! And on top of that, President Obama didn’t make his contempt for the” establishment” a secret.

When Ted Kennedy died, I was saddened not only by the loss of such a passionate advocate for the middle class and the poor, but also because I knew Barack Obama had lost a very powerful ally, an ally that could have been a shield protecting him from some of the shenanigans of a lot of the beltway insiders.

Indeed, and personally, I think race is a factor but I also think that President Obama’s intellect is a factor … the old fat white good ole boys in Congress don’t like intellectual rhetoric. Bill Clinton is very, very smart too, but he played down his intellect when he was President. He played to the good ole boys. President Obama just goes about being himself and his speech is elegant, calm; he has poise as well as charisma. They hate him for it; they are jealous and scared of it.
I don’t think Clinton played down his intellect but he was not as progressive as PBO and therefore more acceptable to the establishment.
I don’t think President Clinton had anywhere near the intellect of President Obama. Hillary is much much smarter than Bill and prior to Lewinsky the old boys fought her – not the President.
I think he is a very smart man. He just couched what he was saying in a ‘good ol’ boy’ voice.
I probably didn’t follow him enough to really know Mary, so no doubt you are correct – but to me he hasn’t looked so smart. He did do some stupid – and I find it interesting that he has really only become “beloved of the people” since the black man defeated his wife in the 2008 primaries.
It is also sad that in the age of technology people have to dumb down their smarts – otherwise they are seen as nerds or uppity. That people cannot accept smart and intelligent leaders is surely a sign of the dumbing down of society – after centuries of enlightenment.
Bill Clinton is exceptionally smart—–he can talk intelligently forever on any subject. But President Obama has the full package in addition to the high intellect—–the insight and good judgement, the elegance and decency and a unique charisma—-a once in a lifetime charisma, imho——to shine in all settings with all kinds of people. Many have described him as comfortable in his own skin, which I think is true and something Clinton lacked.

Sounds fascinating. I heard some caller on Randi Rhodes’ radio show yesterday lamenting that the trade deficit has grown exponentially with China in the last 20 years. The person clearly didn’t realize that the world has shifted on its axis in the last 20 years, since China started operating in the world as a capitalistic machine. This is what President Obama meant when he said, “the ground has shifted beneath their feet” – anyone who is measuring today’s economic balance of power with the standards of 20 years ago has not been paying attention. China did not wake up yesterday and decide to be a super power. They have been working at this over the last two decades to position themselves from a place of economic strength, even though they’ve ignored their democratic and domestic issues.
The United States has wasted four years battling the GOP, instead of building competitiveness using President Obama’s ideas, and if people don’t wake up, it will spend the next four years slipping even further behind. These things don’t happen overnight. And the gradual nature of growth or decline is not easily made up. What the GOP have done these past four years will reverberate for at least one, maybe two generations.
I’m going to look for that program that you mentioned, because it sounds very interesting. I wish there was a corresponding show that would show the decline of opportunities over the past 20 years for American children because of GOP policies. I just read an article recently from Forbes on the 10 best countries to be born in 2013, and the US did not make the list. In order from 1 to 10 it was: Switzerland, Australia, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Singapore, New Zealand, Netherlands, Canada, Hong Kong. Americans should take note.

There’s something to be said for ensuring that your citizens have an across-the-board high standard of living, with access to shelter, education, stability and security. The GOP follow a philosophy that is the exact opposite of Maslow’s “hierarchy of needs” that drive human motivation. OMB offers sequestration guidance

President Obama will order sequestration on Friday unless there is last-minute congressional action, the Office of Management and Budget said in Thursday guidance to federal departments and agencies.
“The president has been clear that sequestration is bad policy that was never intended to be implemented, and the administration remains hopeful that Congress will act to avoid it through an agreement on balanced deficit reduction,” controller Danny Werfel said in the memo. “However, because legislation may not be enacted to avoid sequestration before the current deadline,” federal agencies have planned for cuts to take effect.
Werfel instructed the heads of federal departments and agencies to keep examining their finances and “to engage in intense and thorough planning activities to determine all specific actions that will be taken as soon as practicable.”
Agencies should also communicate to affected stakeholders about spending cuts, Werfel said, and while “communications will vary greatly by agency and by stakeholder, but agencies should be as specific as possible in order to provide sufficient detail to be helpful to these stakeholders in understanding the implications ofthe reduced budget authority resulting from sequestration.”
The memo also urges agencies to limit new acquisitions to ones that “support high-priority initiatives or where failure to do so would expose the government to significantly greater costs in the future.” They should also apply greater “scrutiny” in hiring new personnel, awarding employees discretionary money, and committing to travel for conferences and other events.

Your last paragraph is the most important. It’s like the country is fast asleep. Today, the stock market is close to its all-time record. Economic indicators are all booming. Unemployment insurance claims dropped more than expected. And the country is on the verge of economic collapse because of the actions of the GOP and their tea party ignorant members. How are people not outraged by this?! People will lose their jobs, their support, the gains on their 401k. The deficit will grow. Precious time will be lost that could have been used to invest and grow the country and boost the economic recovery. This is the most irresponsible thing that the GOP have done yet, and in the eyes of the world, it just makes the country look like it’s being controlled by a bunch of treasonous buffoons! The really curious thing is that while the rest of the world is dying and protesting in the streets to push back against austerity and its disastrous effects – the people in this country and like zombies, marching ignorantly into economic crisis. It’s unbelievable!
Today the House is gone for a long week-end, will be back Monday, excuse me but didn’t they just come back from a ten day vacation. Now if the President were taking time like that off, those crazy ass haters would be attacking him all over the place.

I’m late watching his show, but Rev. Al showed some great footage from local news stations around the country – including the Deep South – as to what the sequestration cuts will mean locally. “Little” things like Meals-on-Wheels for homebound seniors, education assists for low-income students, Head Start programs, the price of meat at the butcher shop. Go, Rev. Al! All politics is local.
I have helped a couple of elderly relatives sort out their living arrangements – and access to adequate and regular meals is critical. Services like meals on wheels help people maintain independence and help the families not be concerned about both the health and safety of their folks – so in those programs you mention – that was the one that jumped out at me.
Me, as well. My aunt lived until she was 95. A couple of years before her death in 2009, she was still living by herself in the home she moved into when she got married in 1939, although my uncle was long since deceased. She did not want to move into her son’s home or a retirement home. Her son was quite concerned that she was still cooking all of her own meals, and his wife helped her get hooked up with the local Meals on Wheels chapter at a minimal “cost” (she also didn’t want any of the family to “go to any trouble” bringing meals for her, before this, so that was even out). The Meals on Wheels volunteers not only brought “way too much food” (according to her) each day, which she thoroughly enjoyed, but also were very kindhearted and would visit for a few minutes, giving her something else to occupy her day – and a story to tell the rest of us out-of-towners who would call her.
Sickens me that there are other folks like my aunt who might see their FREAKIN’ FOOD not being delivered BY VOLUNTEERS AT MINIMAL COST. It’s a totally successful program, so let’s get rid of it, eh? Most of the current Republicans in Congress are dogs, as are most of the voters who put them there.

I agree, HZ! My aunt could afford to buy food and had family who could have helped her, but due to her wishes and her family’s concerns, Meals on Wheels was the best solution. I think not only of her (and keeping her away from the hot oven, where she could have gotten hurt!) but all of those who really have no other alternative than that program!

I saw that Jackie, and I think it is great that this is getting lots of local coverage. A lot of these folks in the south and in these republican districts don’t realize that a lot of the things they enjoy everyday are due to the Democrats. As long as they continue to enjoy these amenities, with no interruptions, they could care less that the democrats are responsible. Sometimes things need to hit close to home and not be taken for granted. The repugs could care less about these constituents who continue to vote for them year after year.

just found out that my nomadic, flighty, always broke (I swear to God there were times when I had to give her money just to buy groceries and have gas in her car to get to work) completely unreliable sister has come into a large sum of nmoney via the state lotterry. I’m pretty sure I’m happy for her, but i am seriously burdened by envy. I am literally completely in shock and my head is just trippin!
So please, I seriously need someone to let me know a good prayer to say to get the envy out of my heart I have right now
BTW: Nothing I did for my sister was done expecting anything in return. I wasn’t trying to court any blessings. that’s why I’m upset that I have this feeling right now. I’ll get over it, but that il green monster is riding my back right now.

Lamh36, revel in the fact that you are the responsible one. I would be more shocked if you didn’t show any emotion at all, there worst things than envy. Maybe your sister receiving this money is a test for both you and her.

Next, if you have a decent relationship with her, encourage her to place 95% in a 90 to 180 day CD to give herself a cooling off period before making major spending, investing decisions.
