Rise and Shine

****

Today:

5:0 EST: President Obama departs West Palm Beach, Florida

7:30 EST: Arrives White House

****

****

NYT: The Obama administration is planning a decade-long scientific effort to examine the workings of the human brain and build a comprehensive map of its activity, seeking to do for the brain what the Human Genome Project did for genetics.

The project, which the administration has been looking to unveil as early as March, will include federal agencies, private foundations and teams of neuroscientists and nanoscientists in a concerted effort to advance the knowledge of the brain’s billions of neurons and gain greater insights into perception, actions and, ultimately, consciousness.

Scientists with the highest hopes for the project also see it as a way to develop the technology essential to understanding diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, as well as to find new therapies for a variety of mental illnesses.

I’ve added a link to April’s blog in the blogroll on the right, I’ve noooooooo idea why I didn’t do it before

Well, hidee ho all you O’s!!!! So wassup on this great getting up day on TOD avenue1?1?1?!

Chips, my dear, at the risk of being banned forever from TODville, I just have to say that the picture of PBO and your version of Tiger (with a) Wood is one hilarious piece of work. Imagine logging in for the first time this morning and seeing one of those scary things standing over PBO? Silly me, before I read the caption, and before I knew it was Tiger, I was actually trying to figure out how………. anyone would have a head that much larger than his body; how could he be so tall; who could be taller than trees; did PBO know there was a giant was looming behind him; is Sousa drunk; is Chips drunk; and…………. how the hell did he slip by Mark Knoeller?

Then I had my first cup of coffee and read the comments. Whew! That had me going for a minute.

LP, there are lots of D candidates lining up to run against Corbett. It should be a lively primary. My chief concern with Schwartz is that she is NOT an Obamacare supporter. If she doesn’t show some serious change in that direction, she won’t get my vote in the primary. Sure, she’ll be better than Corbett–a stray dog would be–but PA is already behind in healthcare and we don’t need a Dem making it worse. So..we’ll see where she stands as she fights her primary foes.

      • February 18, 2013 at 9:27 am

I think that was more of a function when she was VIce-chair of DCCC electing congressional D’s, her range was limited. That 3.1 million in the bank will clear the field, only person to watch for is the Wooly Mammuth Ed Rendell see if tries to cause trouble!

        February 18, 2013 at 9:24 am

They did Bill – they respected that he didn’t want to comment & spoke of how much everyone enjoyed having him to visit – a wonderful “good news” video – Chips finds them all!

        • February 18, 2013 at 9:31 am

I second that, really appreciate Chipsticks posting this video. Golf Channel is owned by NBC, would not be suprised if Today Show had him on. On a side note, Tim Rosefort, the reporter is a member of the Floridian. Which is why he had access on the course up to the clubhouse. So if the WH press wants to b*tch, pay you member ship dues at a club and hope the President shows up!

I just hope he is ready for the French Open, his best tournament. Four more victories at the French Open would move him into second place in all-time Grand Slam victories and only two behind Fedex.

    • February 18, 2013 at 9:51 am

Something doesn’t seem right to me about Rafa. He loses to a very low rated player in a high profile tournament and then can’t play for 7 months. I wonder how mentally tough he really is. I know he has had knee problems but something seems fishy to me.

Still, while the press corps merely wants to be able to do its job, I have to say:

    The president’s on vacation.

He’s entitled to a few days off.

    He’s not making any news.

Over the weekend, I’ve relied on TOD to keep up with what is happening. Watching the evening, and weekend shows has become extremely frustrating. Getting that information indirectly and getting the balance provided by this site helps a lot.

It was annoying to see that the MSM/WHPC were indignant that they did not have access to the President during his down time. Why aren’t they indignant that Congress is delaying confirmation of the President’s choices for cabinet positions with make-believe concerns and superfluous and unprecedented requests? Why are they not indignant that Congress is on recess while they pretend to be concerned about the pending sequester? Why are they not challenging Congress as to why they are putting the blame for not legislating on the President when it is THEIR job?

It’s infuriating that the MSM is creating the distractions from REAL issues like gun control, immigration reform, climate change, JOBS, EDUCATION, the budget, etc. by focusing on petty things like sound bites taken out of context, or being stuck on Benghazi? It’s not a filibuster just because some Republicans say that it’s not? A rose by any other name…. If it looks like a duck…

It is aggravating that the MSM allows the Republicans to belittle the progress that has been made over the last few years without challenge. It seems to be a bad thing to report any positive economic information. It’s a no-no for people to know the good they can get from the ACA.
It is scary how they have carried the idea of transparency to the point of putting our national security in jeopardy. Yes, we should know about some situations TO A POINT. When you start broadcasting details that can put operations at risk and people’s lives in danger, then the first amendment has been abused.

It is irritating that many of the pundits – RWNJ’s, PL’s and those in between – were relatively unknown a few years ago. In fact, many of them probably rose to fame due to President Obama’s candidacy and administration. Initially, some of the ones we had come to rely on for political information came across as credible, analytical, and reasonable. At one point the information and opinions they presented seemed to be derived mostly from fact. Now, they have seem to have either bowed to corporate pressure and have no problem passing on misinformation and creating drama, or they have become so full of themselves to the point that what they say now has to be taken with a grain of salt – and that’s if or when you can stand to listen to them.

It’s heartening to know that I can come to this site get what so-called journalists and political experts don’t consistently provide…truth and reasonableness. I typically lurk rather than comment because I learn so much just by reading. (Plus my timing is lousing when it comes to keeping up with the pace of the threads.) I appreciate the eloquence of people on this site who can say the things am thinking so much better than I can say them.

Again, thanks to Chipsticks and the TOD regulars.

  26. February 18, 2013 at 10:03 am

Here is the Potomac two step that the Republicans are playing.
Anytime a policy demands to be done by the Public, the Republucans put pressure in the President for details.
The moment, the split second the President puts any details on any policy( like Immigration reform, the Republicans shoot out a statement saying that the President is a radical socialist that will not work with us and this policy is DOA.
    And the media is complicit.
To be clear, I don’t think any if the Preaidents proposals will pass, unless WR take the house back in 2014. And to get there, will be difficult because of gerrymandering.

Under Boehner the only legislation written has been to name post offices (which they intend to close) or anti-choice.

Why isn’t the MSM concerned with the fact that the House of Representatives no longer writes legislation but expects the President to do so, but they’re soooo concerned over ‘transparency’ of a golf game?

April pointed out to him that only the “researchers” like himself and MHP took that from the speech. April’s doing a good job. I personally think MHP went in with preconceived ideas about the President and his speech and reacted from there. These researchers aren’t taking into consideration what POTUS has done policy wise and don’t seem to remember that ALL his speeches on uplifting the middle class go like this: “these are our problems, this is how my administration (the gov’t) will help and this how YOU the individual can help because there are holes the gov’t can’t fill”. Over and over he’s done this. Yet two mentions of the word “marriage” and a few lines on single moms on how they need help and WHAM Pres.Obama is trying to push forced marriage? How did you go from A to crazy like that?

    • February 18, 2013 at 11:40 am

I’ve been trying to think about the same question. “How did you go from A to crazy like that?”
All I can come up with is gross insanity in the minds of so many, and they have no idea what
it is costing them, and the impact it can have on others. We need a healing, is all I can think
of. Maybe that’s what the 7 mile-wide stream of dolphins is about. I don’t know.
We must educate our peoples because the cost of ignorance is just too great.

      • February 18, 2013 at 11:56 am

I also see an attempt to make Pres. Obama ‘just like bush’ or a secret Republican (see MHP’s comparison of Pres.Obama to Romney).

It’s a thing I’ve seen since he took office. Every crisis is compared to some major fuck up in W’s term. One of MHP’s guest sent a link to a follower on twitter about W’s marriage act to prove a point about her critique of his speech. Uhm, where in that speech or in any speech did she think that Pres.Obama was going to “force marriage”?

        this is what he said:

“So we should encourage marriage by removing the financial disincentives for couples who love one another but may find it financially disadvantageous if they get married. We should reform our child support laws to get more men working and engaged with their children.”

Sounds like he’s proposing more tax breaks for people who are ALREADY in love and WANT to get married. That doesn’t sound like forced marriage to me but whatever. I’m not a researcher.

        • February 18, 2013 at 12:03 pm

You know, I think PBO is so excellent he simply does not fit into research/analytical methods of inquiry.
Too bad for them. They miss the whole thing. what a bunch of crap.
I think vows of silence would be helpful. A 3 year vow of silence for each one of them.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, yes And I am not kidding about this.

About the constant reference to George W. Bush….

Republicans were profoundly humiliated by the Bush presidency. Democrats, liberals, and progressives were traumatized by it. I’m not versed in sociology, nor in social psychology, but I wonder if the intensity of the emotions related to anything “Bush” has made the reactions to the Obama presidency more emotionally “charged” than they would have been if he had followed a “more ordinary” presidency. Granted, the first black president was condemned to a higher level of scrutiny, but I keep thinking that it’s even worse because Barack Obama was the successor of one of the worst presidents in history. Republicans want revenge and can’t cope with the fact that Barack Obama is admired and loved all around the world and will go down in history as a great president. On the other hand, some part of the democratic coalition has hoped, unrealistically, that President OBama would wave a magic wand and repair all the damage in a few short years.

” anything “Bush” has made the reactions to the Obama presidency more emotionally “charged” than they would have been if he had followed a “more ordinary” presidency”

This has been my contention all along. People were psychologically traumatized- intelligent people, that is- from such a dumbing down of America blatantly played out in the media during this time, not to mention made to feel insecure, that anybody coming after Bush was hoped to be the total opposite, and when they found that PBO was not the extremist they were seeking, they pounced. Their expectations were always very unrealistic. You can’t undo years of degradation by an administration in an instant. People’s seeming disregard for law in governing and wanting instant gratification revealed how skillful the prior bunch were in its propaganda.

            • February 18, 2013 at 2:29 pm

Okay, yes, EDP, this reads true for me, that intelligent people were psychologically traumatized
by the dumbing down and gross abuse of government, the executive part, especially.
Yes, traumatized. How do we address that? Maybe this awareness is in the public domain already.
Are you aware of it? Who do you see, for example, as a person who is commenting at this level?
Maybe it’s ~you~. I am not kidding, here. We need good thinkers that, far as I can see, are most
available right here on TOD. The peoples’ consciousness calls for it.

          • February 18, 2013 at 1:49 pm

I think you are right. They are on hyper alert and look for any sign of another bush. It’s a lousy way to judge or analyze Pres.Obama’s policies but that’s the way they do it.

Look at the issue of drones. bush left POTUS with 2 wars, tortured detainees, lied about why we went to Iraq, came up with these alerts to terrify people every day but the guy who had to clean up ALL of that is now worse than bush? Really?

          • 195 vcprezofan2
            February 18, 2013 at 2:54 pm

LP2008, to extend your ‘Republicans were profoundly humiliated by the Bush presidency’, it therefore makes some sense that they are trying to draw a parallel to PBO’s actions to take some of the shame out of their eyes. ‘Hey Bush wasn’t all that awful. Look Obama is doing something similar!’ Of course their ability to make comparisons is up there with their ability to choose ‘leaders’. OTH, what’s the ‘explanation’ for the left-leaning idjits who make a similar comparison? Irrationality? Envy? Need for attention? …?

        February 18, 2013 at 12:01 pm

Sara, the question I’ve been struggling with is whether this insanity and unwillingness to listen to facts has always been true in this country, or whether we’re just more aware of it because of the internet. There were always closed-minded people and God knows, there were far out loonies in the “old days” but they seem to have bigger forums now and they seem more anxious to be aggrieved at just about anything. This country is long past the need for a healing. The only encouragement I feel is that younger people seem more open to common sense.

        • February 18, 2013 at 12:09 pm

Yes, Jackie, thank you for this. I say a “healing” because I just can’t think what else. A bunch of people dying will help.
And the younger people coming up: yes. And for people like me [in my 70’s ecstatic to see such amazing leadership as PBO,
at last, leading the peoples] . . . for people like me, it is to keep my eyes on the horizon, the younger people, and give them all that’s
possible. It’s what PBO is doing, after all. He knows it’s with the children, not with any of the old farts that screech around
and obstruct things in the MSM, in Washington, DC, wherever. And I hear you, we’ve probably always had closed-minded people,
far out loonies in the “old days” [like forever], and we DO see them more now. I think, actually, that we here on TOD could do a
better job of not repeating the ignorances, not dwelling. We could ignore a lot of it. Thank you again for responding here.

        • 198 vcprezofan2
          February 18, 2013 at 3:06 pm

JG & SCC, I’d say the unwillingness to listen to facts has always been there, but yes modern technology makes it more easily visible, PLUS PBO’s different style of politicking brings it more starkly into contrast. In the past, I think, pols regularly wrote facts to suit their narrative and almost all of them did it. PBO won’t play by those rules and the others haven’t caught up to him yet, so they follow their old paths while reviling him for not playing by the accepted rules and not compromising. We here already know that even the media is used to the old way of doing things hence their willingness to write the story before it’s been acted out.

Israeli President Shimon Peres’ office said Monday that Obama will be recognized for his “unique and significant contribution to strengthening the State of Israel and the security of its citizens.”

RWNJ translation: Obama hates Israel. Heads exploding everywhere…did anyone watch 60 Minutes last night about Iron Dome? I taped it, but haven’t watched it yet…

      February 18, 2013 at 12:33 pm

I’m happy to see President Obama being recognized for what he did for Israel’s security. And it’s pretty clear that Shimon Peres, who’s much more rational than Netanyahu, has a deep respect for President Obama. However, I’m concerned that President Obama receiving that medal will make things difficult for him when it comes to dealing with the Arab world. Sad, because the president really respects both sides, and wishes to make advances on the peace process. His dedication to Israel security is, in my opinion, part of a long term strategy. He understands that one of the biggest impediments to peace in the Middle East is Israel’s FEARS. So he has worked diligently to lessen those fears, in hope that it will make Israel finally more open to serious peace negotiations.

      • February 18, 2013 at 12:41 pm

“I’m concerned that President Obama receiving that medal will make things difficult for him when it comes to dealing with the Arab world.”

That crossed my mind too Lovepolitics, although, to be honest, I think most/all of the Arab world would see any American President as being on Israel’s ‘side’ in all of this, so it might not make much difference.

Staying ‘firm’ with Netanyahu is the key, that will go some way towards earning some Arab trust.

          February 18, 2013 at 12:49 pm

Despite the concern I just mentioned, It will be fun to watch republicans’ heads explode. They have criticized President Obama for months if not years because he hasn’t visited Israël during his first term. Now that he is going, he’s going to receive a medal that NO OTHER SITTING PRESIDENT has ever received !!! He’s going to be honored in a way that NO OTHER SITTING PRESIDENT has been honored !!

        Isn’t that a sweet revenge ??!!

        • February 18, 2013 at 12:49 pm

AND, when PBO receives that medal, he will set the context for it, using words to move the whole
thing to a level that creates the greatest opening for humility, peace, and the future for our children.

Andrea Mitchell is concerned! No access to the president for 2 1/2 days! Was it because he was golfing with naughty Tiger Woods and the association there and all that implies? Was it because he was golfing while the sequester and other big problems loom??? Was it because this is his 2nd term and he’s doing things he always secretly wanted to do and to hell with everyone??? Where are the pictures of President Obama and Tiger Woods on the golf course???? This is so true.
its amazing that thanks to wall street, and all the dirty tricks and cheating.. Our economy took a dive. Thanks to the rich heading for tax shelters and taking jobs off shore for bigger profits.. We are in a revenue vs spending problem.
So ‘Instead’ of come up with jobs and revenue.. Which might cost a rich corp a few unnoticed dollars..
The “only” way to fix the revenue problem is in cutting SSI to the elderly and the vets.. Most vets and elderly live on less than 1200.00 a month.. Which means as things cost more, these people will have to cut even more of the things that are necessary to ‘survival’..
While the rich cheat, sneak and hide their money.. Because of course a millionare-billionare would miss a few thousand more in taxes a year.
Better the poor find another way to eat, heat their homes, stay cool when it is hot and of course the “least important” cut their medications out .. Deciding which medication they can live longest without
