Happy Presidents’ Day – This Land is Your Land

We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial, January 18, 2009

****

****

Some of you have already had the pleasure of seeing a selection of my epic photos from the concert, but for anyone unlucky enough to have missed them…..

Okay, this isn’t actually one of mine:

But this is: 😎

Photographic proof I wasn’t right at the back, there were some – true, not many – behind me:

Denzil, looking me right in the eye, in a swoony kind of way:

Me and Bono:

Bruce serenading me:

A close-up of President Obama about to speak:

Another Pete Souza-esque photo of President Obama:

If you’re not careful, I’ll post more some time soon.

Happy Presidents’ Day everyone.

I’ve been stressed out Chipsticks, (Rethug’s making my life miserable) trying to refinance home before sequester/debt ceiling and change in interest rates. Well’s Fargo is dragging their feet, the longer the wait, the closer to Mr.(I got 99% of what I wanted) further ruins my livelyhood.

hang in there, l.p. something particularly frustrating about waiting on the ‘underwriters’ for a final approval. i always feel like a naughty child outside the principal’s office, wondering what my punishment will be. the whole system is designed to make you feel very small in the face of the magnificence of the mortgage lender! crikey!

So true. We refinanced last year – what a cluster! The broker was a great guy, but jeez, I had to dig out papers that I didn’t know I had! However, our payment ended up $444 not long before the election – I figured that was a good sign for PBO! 😉
Hope things look up for you!

If this goes through I will get a 2.8% APR and will lower my payments $281/month over 15yrs. Will save me about $45K. Hence the stress!!

funny i can’t find a single mention from mark knoller, andrea greenspan, ed henry or others about the jeff gannon/guckert/republican scandal when doing some searching. only thing that comes up is when those same people (especially knoller) tried to draw their usual false equivalence to jeff gannon/guckert and a time when president obama asked nico pitney of huffington post a question by name, since pitney had crowdsourced a question from iranians via social networks, so basically a conduit for Iranians to ask the president a question. yes, knoller and all the big “news” people were saying that was the same as having a gay male prostitute, with no journalistic training, posing as a reporter getting called on by name in white press conferences for years.

and now these same “journalists” are acting like the president taking two days off to golf is somehow scandalous?!? i literally can find no mention of jeff gannon/guckert by these “news” people when it was happening. it’s like it never happened. amazing. i’d love to ask ed henry why they didn’t seem to think the jeff gannon/guckert scandal wasn’t newsworthy to these “journalists.”

    http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2013/02/18/17005939-hubris-selling-the-iraq-war-the-rumsfeld-memos

    Hubris co-author Michael Isikoff explains:

By late November, Rumsfeld was meeting with Gen. Tommy Franks, Centcom commander, to plot the “decapitation” of the Iraqi government, according to the now declassified talking points agenda from the sessions (shown on television for the first time in the documentary). The talking points suggest that Rumsfeld and his team were grappling with a tricky issue: “How [to] start?” the war. In other words, what would the pretext be? Various scenarios were outlined: “US discovers Saddam connection to Sept. 11 attack or to anthrax attacks?” reads one of them. “Dispute over WMD inspections?” reads another. “Start now thinking about inspection demands.”

See the documents yourself after the jump.

A big Thank You should go to Michael Isikoff for diving into the slime that is the Republicans in the GWB admin. I’m MORE than just a little livid right now.

Have you read the book? None of this sounds new to me. I knew when they didn’t kill Osama bin Laden at Tora Bora they would go into Iraq. Especially when I heard our troops didn’t go after him, but sent Afghani’s. In one press conference Gen. Frank said there was nothing left to bomb in Afghanistan. He sounded bored.

But make the schoolroom a battleground because Republicans won’t do a God damned thing to get military weapons off the street. For that, they’ve got all the money in the world.

Had a long discussion with some libertarian (who’s only worked with Republicans) about immigration reform. Tried to tell me that Obama killed immigration reform when he inserted 5 poison pills into the 2007 bill. She only name one by the way. I wasn’t paying attention to politics at that time so I had to look up what happened. best source I can find was Politifact who was fact checking John McCain’s claim that Obama killed the bill. It was a senator Dorgan that came up with the amendment. An amendment which passed by the way and I don’t see how that amendment caused the bill to die but John Cornyn’s didn’t?

She blocked me and called me a conspiracy theorist for not believing that it was Senator Obama’s vote that killed the bill in 2007. Even though he voted to allow it to proceed with or w/o the amendment.

      For what it’s worth…http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comprehensive_Immigration_Reform_Act_of_2007

I don’t know how then Sen. Obama voted, but it looks to me like this was a cluster**** to begin with. Nice try libertarian lady….

On June 7, three Senate votes on cloture (a move to end discussion) for the bill failed with the first losing 33-63, the second losing 34-61 and the third losing 45-50.[4] This had been thought by some observers to signal the end of the bill’s chances, since on that day, after the first failing vote, Harry Reid had told reporters that, if another vote on cloture failed, “the bill’s over with. The bill’s gone.”[5]

However, at the urging of President Bush, the bill was brought back for discussion in the Senate as bill S. 1639 on June 25.[6] On June 26, a motion to proceed passed the Senate, by a margin of 64-35 (under Senate rules it needed 60 votes).[7] A number of amendments to the bill were considered and rejected. On June 28, the bill failed to get the 60 votes necessary to end debate. The final cloture vote lost 46-53.[8] This effectively ended its chances, and President Bush said he was disappointed at Congress’s failure to act on the issue.[9]

I was there at that concert, also back by the Wash monument. I was disappointed that they didn’t do another public concert this year, but have always felt like the Lincoln Memorial isn’t that great a stage since so much of the space in front of it is taken up by the pool (?reflecting pool?)

I watched that golf channel clip – it was so funny to hear them discuss golf so seriously in the context of the President of the United States. a very nice change of pace.

I’m so glad the FBI has nothing better to do:

“Menendez’s troubles: “A team of FBI agents has been conducting interviews in recent weeks in the Dominican Republic and the United States, looking into allegations that Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) patronized prostitutes in the Caribbean nation, but has found no evidence to support the claim, according to two people familiar with the investigation.”

    • 68 theo67
      February 18, 2013 at 4:24 pm

Why would they release this, as yet, unfounded accusation? The harm has already been done just by mentioning the rumour – at this point, it won’t even matter if it’s true or not. I don’t know if it’s true or not, but I’ve always found Sen. Menendez to be very dignified when he’s appeared on shows. It’ll be a shame if this turns out to be true, but even more of a shame that his reputation has been tarnished if it turns out to be false. I wish those who rush to leak would just think of the consequences of their irresponsible actions.

Does Andrea Mitchell have a personality?

    • 76 Nena20409
      February 18, 2013 at 3:50 pm

No. I will not tell what I think of her. She was a Jessica Savitch(sp) wannabee. How she has lasted this long with NBC is really remarkable.

      • 77 jacquelineoboomer
        February 18, 2013 at 4:16 pm

(Husband’s) name recognition. For those of us who remember Jessica Savitch, no way there’s any comparison, as you intimated! Andrea is awful in front of the camera on MSNBC – has been since the first day they gave her a show – not to mention her disgusting slanted newscast, which is more or less how she feels, not news.

        • 78 Nena20409
          February 18, 2013 at 6:26 pm

I said she was a wannabee. That doesn’t mean that her delusion was based in reality. I didn’t make any comparison….. ;). There is a huge difference.

She is married to Greenspan or whatever in the 1990s…….She has been with NBC since the 1960s…..from PA. So she said one time.

          • 79 jacquelineoboomer
            February 18, 2013 at 6:42 pm

Oh, yes, I understood exactly what you meant – that you agreed there’s no comparison! 🙂 I meant to add to that. Sorry if I wasn’t clear. Andrea once was an up-and-coming reporter, back when women were usually assigned to the society pages, but she’s way past any hardcore work now, although she thinks she is doing it. Some of her “gets” are because of her previous work-related connections, people calling her with “news,” that’s something she earned, but I don’t believe she’s any kind of investigative journalist at present. Now, she’s a long-time news face who’s married to Greenspan, which is why I think she gets the other piece of her stories. I believe that’s also why she has her own TV show since she is definitely not what NBC might think of as putting their best foot forward – she’s not good on camera or during spur-of-the-moment conversations. IMHO, of course!

RYAN & MCCAIN FALL APART AT THE ‘SLIGHTEST’ CHALLENGE TO THEIR DISTORTIONS AND LIES

Sunday Smack Down: The Mainstream Media Finally Challenges Republican Lies

    By: Jason Easley

    ————————————————————-

For whatever reason, we were treated to glimpse of what it would look like if our media held Republicans accountable for their lies and false statements. When Karl confronted Paul Ryan he got that familiar eyes glazed over deer in headlights look that we all know so well from the 2012 campaign. Over on Meet The Press, John McCain looked like he was ready to go all North Vietnam on David Gregory for daring to question him.

Republican are so used to being softballed by the corporate media Sunday shows that Ryan and McCain fell apart as soon as they pushed at all. If the mainstream media would do this everyday, Republicans would be held accountable for their lies, and maybe if the political price was high enough, they would choose to join the rest of us in reality.

If this what the mainstream media could be, it is time for viewers to vote with their remotes and demand a media that challenges and informs.

Thanks VC, you gave me quite a chuckle with your tweet. Nicely done. All I have to say to Howard Fineman on his complement about Joy Reid is TELL US SOMETHING WE DON’T KNOW. Joy Reid runs rings around HF and all of the gasbags on MSNBC. She thinks outside the box. Her political analysis is always insightful and original. You won’t hear her just repeating what everybody else is saying. It is such a pleasure to see her on a panel. But my preference is when she is the only guest. You can tell that Tweety really likes her. I have seen him complement her on the air several times.

A few more like Ms Reid would raise the journalism bar quite a few notches, IMO. Sure hope she gets ‘spotted’ soon for a regular spot. 😉

I hope that the Rachel Maddow MSNBC show tonight is not ultimately another “we-didn’t-scrutinize-Bush-and-look-what happened-therefore-we-must-over-scrutinize-Obama-because-he-will-likely-do-the-same-or-worse” type of documentary.

I will not tune in but will keep an eye out via Twitter and elsewhere.

I am reluctant to give MSNBC the ratings. They may start out as though they are blaming Bush to get a certain viewer segment suckered in, and then slowly and insidiously make it about the current President, so that by the time the hour is over, you are left with a funny feeling that this expose was just another hit piece on the president and you were fooled into giving MSNBC the whole hour.

Here are the first two paragraphs about it the MSNBC website written by Michael Isikoff .

      —-

ANALYSIS: As the Obama White House vigorously defends its policy of using drone strikes to kill suspected terrorists—including in some cases American citizens—it invokes the findings of secret intelligence showing that the targets pose an “imminent” threat to the U.S.

In the meantime, I plan on being alert over the next few days, as well as seeing whether I can borrow some camping equipment should I need to camp outside the village in the event a confrontation becomes necessary. Hello TOD family – I am just catching up after a very busy week. Thank you, Chips, and all contributors for keeping me informed and updated. I was particularly happy to read about the decision to award our President Israel’s Presidential Medal of Distinction when he visits Israel in March. The statement from the committee that selects recipients for this honor should be sent to certain Republicans who want to question the President’s actions in regard to Israel.

“Barack Obama is a true friend of the State of Israel, and has been since the beginning of his public life. As president of the United States of America, he has stood with Israel in times of crisis. During his time as president he has made a unique contribution to the security of the State of Israel, both through further strengthening the strategic cooperation between the countries and through the joint development of technology to defend against rockets and terrorism.”

But what caught my eye is the following paragraph which goes beyond the President’s relationship with Israel:

“Obama’s presidency is typified by an unswerving belief and ongoing fight for equality without any regard for religion, race, sexuality or gender and the strengthening of the weakest in society in the United States; and for the fulfillment of the values of democracy, human rights, solidarity and peace across the world. Through his personal story and his agenda as president of the United States of America, Barack Obama is a symbol of democratic values and he exemplifies the spirit of equality of opportunity in American society.”

This is how the vast majority of the world’s people sees our President. If only our disgraceful media could pause for a moment and hear that message.

“I’M NOT OPPOSED TO ALL WARS. I’M OPPOSED TO DUMB WARS”.

A Wartime Leader Ends a War He Never Wanted

By MARK LANDLER (December 8, 2011)

    ————————————————————————–

WASHINGTON — In October 2002, a little-known Illinois state senator joined a rally in Chicago against the Iraq war, declaring: “I’m not opposed to all wars. I’m opposed to dumb wars.” It was a defining moment for the young politician, who used this position to set himself apart in the race for the White House in 2008.

To a remarkable degree, that same distinction between wars, smart and dumb, is still guiding President Obama as he presides over ceremonies to mark the end of the Iraq war and defends his foreign policy in an election year.

You’re the first lady of the United States, you turn 49, your midlife crisis looms. Whaddya gonna do? Sports car? Out. Bungee jumping? Definitely out. New bangs? Check.

That’s the explanation first lady Michelle Obama joked about with Rachael Ray today in an “Q & Ray” interview via Skype for the Rachael Ray Show airing Wednesday.

…… “This is my midlife crisis: the bangs,” Obama said. “I couldn’t get a sports car. They won’t let me bungee-jump. So instead, I cut my bangs.”

I’d like you to join me this Wednesday for a special briefing for OFA volunteers on gun violence prevention.

We’ll talk through the President’s proposal, and Organizing for Action staff will discuss how we can take action.

Will you join us? We’ll be livestreaming the call at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday.

It’s going to take every single one of us to spread the word and pressure Congress to pass legislation to reduce gun violence.

It’s a big task, but I know we can do it.

Join us here at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday to find out how:

Andrea Mitchell on NBC Nightly News fuming again about President Obama not allowing the wonderful White House Press Corps to trail along on the golf course this weekend—–following in golf carts? She said he likely didn’t want to be seen with horrible Tiger Woods—-and showed a pic of them together at the WH. She then showed a clip of Ed Henry going off on the lack of access and how unprecedented and a bunch of other lies, smoke blowing out his ears. And then again stated her suggestion that President Obama is doing all these terrible things because this is his 2nd term and he doesn’t have to worry about re-election and just doesn’t care any more about what the press thinks of him. It was disgusting beyond belief. The only decent part of the report was the clip from the Golf Channel guy who was so enthused about the outing. His positive report stood in stark contrast to her negativity and distorted, dishonest whining.

Reading the report that Andrea Mitchell did on NBC News — A few weeks ago I began watching CBS News and have found it to be a considerably improvement, especially in regards to reporting about PO. Tonight, it was on NBC when BW came on and did his rundown of what they were going to cover. I immediately changed to CBS. Guess what? CBS had nothing close to what NBC teased. I suggest checking out CBS.

I mean, this has got to stop … again I say, what about Bush’s excursion into the woods where his V.P. shot a member of the hunting party, and reports conflict on when the incident was even reported and whether there was any drinking (oh, one report says there might have been a couple of beers in the cooler, or Cheney had one beer hours earlier … yada, yada, yada). Was the press along for this event? Do we have pictures. Is there blood? There must have been blood, the victim was riddled with shotgun pellets. I am fuming!

What the Republicans are doing is they are trying to turn this President into Bush, and then run on it in 2016.
They remember, how the Public felt about Bush and No WMDs, then Kateina and his mishandling of that, then Vakerie Plaime, then the financial crash. People hated Bush and wanted him gone.
So, now they are trimming up charges, and also saying no transparency, subconsciously trying to get that same feeling back that people had for Bush.
One problem, we just had an election and the President educated everybody as to what the Republicans are up to.

Maddow is anti-Obama and will continue to bring up issues on tv to undermine this President and chip away at his favorability ratings. She is not to be trusted. Just saw Corn and Isikoff on Tweety talking about Hubris—airing tonight. Whatever it turns out to be—–I am reminded again of the Iraq War runaway train——the helplessness of seeing it promoted and even celebrated on all our most prominent news outlets—–The New York Times and Judy Miller and the Washington Post and CNN with Wolf Blitzer’s excitement about it and being embedded—–and all the major networks falling into place, sending reporters to be embedded, with special graphics and music! promoting the war. I was in shock at the time—-couldn’t believe it was happening, that with just a little google I had serious doubts—-in fact, didn’t believe a word—–I couldn’t figure out why Congress and everyone was going along with a fake war! Didn’t believe Powell. That was when I went from email only computer activity to search out some sane voices on the internets—-and found some thankfully. It was such a shocking, outrageous time——I couldn’t believe it was happening in this country. That was the end of the honesty and integrity of the news media in my mind—-a complete loss of respect. And this failure has never really been acknowledged. It is still just unbelievable to me—–all that loss of life and billions of dollars of tax money——for nothing.

I wasn’t into politics then and didn’t watch cable. I do recall seeing an interview with Cheney and/or Rumsfeld. I think it was the “greeted as liberators” interview. One of them talked about the war being 6 weeks or 6 months and my reaction was, “yeah, right”.

I was happy to see Saddam Hussein go down. He was a monster. I tuned out after that with a gut feeling that things weren’t going to get better any time soon.

Buccaneers defensive end Da’Quan Bowers has been arrested for carrying a gun at an airport.

NBCNewYork.com reports that Bowers was arrested at LaGuardia Airport on Monday morning after police discovered he was illegally carrying a handgun. Bowers had a loaded .40 caliber firearm in his carry-on bag as he was attempting to get on a US Airways flight to Raleigh, North Carolina.

Bowers was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and is expected to appear in court on Monday evening.

A 2011 second-round draft pick of the Buccaneers, Bowers missed the first six games of the 2012 season with a torn Achilles tendon but returned in time to play in 10 games and record three sacks last season.

    Todays chuckle.

    Catholic Heart Attack

You don’t have to be Catholic to appreciate this one!!!

A man suffered a serious heart attack while shopping in a store.

A store clerk called 911 when they saw him collapse to the floor.

The paramedics rushed the man to the nearest hospital where he had emergency open heart bypass surgery.

He awakened from the surgery to find himself in the care of nuns at the Catholic Hospital he was taken to.

A nun was seated next to his bed holding a clip board loaded with several forms, and a pen.

She asked him how he was going to pay for his treatment.

“Do you have health insurance?” she asked.

He replied in a raspy voice, “No health insurance.”

The nun asked, “Do you have money in the bank?”

He replied, “No money in the bank.”

“Do you have a relative who could help you with the payments?” asked the irritated nun.

He said, “I only have a spinster sister, and she is a nun.”

The nun became agitated and announced loudly,

“Nuns are not spinsters! Nuns are married to God.”

The patient replied, “Perfect. Send the bill to my brother-in-law.”
