Chat Away

Martha’s Vineyard, Aug 2010 (Photo by Pete Souza)

(1) We seriously need photos of PBO and Tiger Woods today

(2) Warning: If Manchester United beat Reading and Chelsea beat Middlesbrough in the FA Cup, then Manchester United will play Chelsea in the quarter-finals. Could get ugly around here πŸ˜•

(3) I’m waaaaaaay behind catching up with comments and emails, as usual – will do asap.

(4) Back in a bit, chat away

This is a new thread and I’m not trying to bring the last thread’s discussion to this one, but since this posted at the very end of the last thread I just wanted to leave you with my last post.

“All right. I’m out for real this time. Thanks HF for the link to the MHP tweet. I couldn’t reply to you up-thread. I guess there are only so many indentations that Word Press allow for replies. Again, I wish this discussion could be about communities and what is needed to move them forward as productive entities in this country. I wish it could have been brought up in a way that did not center around the personalities involved, rather the issue itself. I still would like to know why any mention of single moms, in any context, was necessary in a speech about gun violence.

Anyway, sorry I can’t reply to all of you who engaged with me in this most interesting debate. I welcome the exchange and the ability to agree to disagree, hopefully without curling any toes around here.”

For those interested, here’s a link to the panel discussion on MHP’s show this morning. I felt it to be informative. http://www.nbcnews.com/id/49263362#50839743

OK now I really have to go. I’m about to miss the opening curtain. A good discussion indeed, but I’m sure neither MHP, nor PBO would expect me to miss a play. See ya!!!

Hey Chips, how come you never say ‘Listen Away’? Why are you always encouraging us to chat? What if we have nothing to chat about? If everyone is chatting, who is listening? What if the people chatting shouldn’t really be chatting so much? Why is there no encouragement for us to be listeners when we have nothing meaningful to add to the conversation? Inquiring mind wants to know. I am listening so you’d better answer. πŸ˜‰

This tweet about Melissa’s shameful diatribe says it all.

Pres. Obama spoke in a comprehensive manner about education, jobs, economy, poverty, gun violence, and rebuilding all communities; Melissa Harris Perry insultingly reduced it to β€œDaddy Issues.” She used her admitted bias as a former single mom to present a false narrative of Pres. Obama’s speech. She used her admitted bias to misrepresent his speech because hey, it’s more fun to mislead an audience than tell them the truth. Pres. Obama spoke about the fact that what makes one a father is the courage it takes to raise a child not make one. Pres. Obama praised single mothers and called them heroic. What Melissa heard was β€œPRES. OBAMA HATES SINGLE MOTHERS AND HE’S TRYING TO CONTROL THEIR LIVES!!!”

Pres. Obama spoke about including LGBT, adoptive, single, and two parent families in his policy proposals. What Melissa heard was β€œPRES. OBAMA THINKS SINGLE MOTHERS ARE TO BLAME FOR GUN VIOLENCE!!!” Melissa did not once tell her audience about Pres. Obama’s plan to improve the lives of 20 communities (the program will expand as it goes on) through healthcare, education, jobs, reducing poverty, reducing gun violence, giving all families support , helping fathers get jobs so they can help alongside mothers in providing for their families. Melissa took his very important speech and warped it in a disgusting manner.

Melissa has a father for her child yet she seems to begrudge Pres. Obama wanting that for all children whenever possible. When one begins to sound like Cornel West and Tavis Smiley, one should take a step back.

What Melissa Harris Perry did today is called β€œProjection.” The white house billed the speech as one about the economy and how to help the middle-class. They never billed it as 100% about gun violence. Melissa did that and then lied about Pres. Obama blaming gun violence on single mothers. She equated his elegant speech about important issues to Romney’s crass moment from the second debate. She didn’t fully listen to Pres. Obama’s speech. Instead she heard what she wanted to hear and went off half cocked. Ignorance at its worst.

          Good choice, clearly.
I get why TOD is upset with MHP even if MHP herself will never get it.

      • 76 hopefruit2
        February 17, 2013 at 3:33 pm

This has been my main objection to MHP’s entire treatment of this discussion. Her complete and utter dishonesty – from her misrepresentation of PBO’s speech, to her likening his words to that of Mitt Romney’s to her continued doubling down and stacking her panel with only those who agree with and reinforce her initial lies.

Furthermore, she plays victim when called out on it. Melissa simply sidetracked the President’s point about Black men needing to step up and be there for their children into an issue of single moms being blamed for violence – when that was not even his point in the first place. I know she’s trying to get a contract renewed at MSNBC but it should not come at the expense of the President’s efforts to enlist these communities in the progressive change that they seek and need.

      February 17, 2013 at 2:12 pm

This part of SmartyPants’s commentary leaped out at me:

“What I particularly found offensive about what Melissa did with this was to derisively cast President Obama’s admission that he wished he’d had a father as a “daddy issue.” The way I see it, the President has grappled deeply with this particular loss he shares with so many of us. In talking about that – he’s made himself vulnerable. His journey – and his honesty about it – should be something we respect and emulate.”

Melissa was mean, insulting, and downright disgusting this morning in trivializing an issue that should be dealt with seriously.

Did not see MHP and never watch her show. I watched PBO’s speech and I saw him weave his story about his dad into something positive. He gave his mother kudos for raising him as a single mom. I looked at the speech as a whole and not just segments. Everything PBO said connected, including gun violence.

        February 17, 2013 at 3:20 pm

Once again, Smartypants hits the target and does so with intelligence and compassion. If the complex emotions that surround growing up without a father are “daddy issues,” as opposed to say human reactions, then a whole lot of us have them. My own father died when I was five years old and my mother never remarried. Do I have father issues? Sure.
A hole that big in your life doesn’t just go away nor does it necessarily destroy you. Even a fatherless child can become POTUS.

Indeed – so many of the kids the President was speaking to that day are dealing with a single family home and many probably found it inspiring that the President overcame this fact to still succeed. And I’m sure there were some teenage moms in the audience, and adult single moms who were inspired by his praise of the hard work single parents do to raise their children. Seems MHP doesn’t know what she’s talking about – once again…

        February 17, 2013 at 8:27 pm

UT, both you and Smartypants nailed it. As you said so well in your previous comment, MHP chose not listen to the President’s holistic speech. All she was interested in is “projecting.”

    • February 17, 2013 at 2:44 pm

      Smartypants gets it, particularly …

You are probably right Nena! But you know what, increasingly, fewer and fewer people are paying attention to the media chattering class. Even angry Republicans know that President Obama is going to be President for the next four years. And, on top of that, they can no longer use the threat of denying him a second term. Our unethical media are still going to be obsessed at negatively criticizing everything he says and does. But again, they do not matter either because their negativity can never be used to defeat him in elections.

i think in the last post, that is one of the isssues I raised after your explanation that MHP knows POTUS & FLOTUS.

Friends do not use such incendiary language on friends especlally when it is not true & the quotes attributed to them are not correct.

Most importantly, when MHP uses terms like that, you know that right wingers are going to repeat this over and over. Its like MHP gave them another lisence to insult PBO with “Daddy Issues”.

You see how the MSM is building up Dr Carson because of the stuff he told POTUS during the prayer breakfast? If you are a black person, and you insult PBO you get kudos and air time – we know the drill.

Unless I am mistaken, MHP is a political scientist and not a psychologist so she should use caution when saying such stuff because she cannot take it back

Ed Henry of Fox News is madder than a wet hen. He’s been whining about not having pictures of Pres. Obama and Tiger Woods playing golf. Hahahahahaah. This is his tweet.

Remember, Ed Henry is married to an Asian-American……my guess, she could be a Tiger Woods’ fan…..looking for pictures to impress her?….Last year at the WHCD, Ed Henry got himself and family to take pictures with the POTUS……After all, the POTUS has been on the road for days now…..Ed Henry is looking for a late Valentine’s gift? Hmm?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t the WH confirm that PBO played with Tiger Woods? The non-transparency would only come if he didn’t say that they golfed (and he has a right to do that as well). Do they want a photo of him brushing his teeth, flossing……these non-journalists make TMZ look like Walter Cronkite. Of all the issues in the world………really?! I have no respect for the media today. In a few days, their onto another shiny object that has no merit.

As for MHP……she has some serious issues that she is projecting onto the President. I heard his entire speech several times—she misrepresented what he said and then doubled down. I’ve been through with MSNBC for awhile because I know the angle that Phil Griffin is after and the left in pundit-land are happy to oblige. Her comment about “Daddy issues” was trifling and emasculating…..downright nasty, snarky, and she should know as a political scientist that words matter and she should be very careful going forward instead of increasing her ego instead of admitting her mistake from her initial tweet. She won’t be getting any ratings from me. Once someone shows me who they are, I believe them.

Hey guys, this is a nice scoop about Pres. Obama’s golf weekend. I think golf is one of the most boring games ever and I have no idea how Pres. Obama played for 8 hours but I just compare it to my love of football (soccer to heathens) and then it begins to make sense. πŸ˜€

After an eight-hour session with Butch Harmon on Saturday in which he played 27 holes and hit balls in the instructor’s golf studio, Obama was able to coordinate to play with Woods. The two were originally supposed to play at Woods’ home club, The Medalist GC some 30 minutes away in Hobe Sound, but eventually opted for The Floridian, where the President has been based all weekend.

“Just to see the interaction between the two on the range was pretty neat,” said Harmon, who was on the tee. “The President said to Tiger, ‘The last tournament you played was fun to watch. It’s good to see you play well again.’ You could tell he meant it. It just wasn’t a throw it out compliment.”

The round, which also included U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk and Floridian owner Jim Crane, began with Woods holing out for birdie on the first hole, and continued at a rapid clip. They made the turn in a little more than two hours and eventually opted to play 27 holes overall.

“I like the fact he loves golf,” Harmon said. “Obviously he doesn’t get to play very much. He said it was a real treat for him to come here with his best friends and have a chance to play. But he counts every shot. He doesn’t like gimmes. He putts everything out. He counts all his penalty shots. He thinks about all his shots before he hits them. Some people might say to the President of the United States, ‘Oh, just move it.’ But that’s not him. He loves the game and loves the game the way it’s supposed to be played.”

UT, like you I find golf to be such a boring game. At the same time I am exceedingly glad that President Obama likes it and is totally into playing it right. If that’s what makes him relax and rest his mind from all the monumental problems and decisions that he faces every second, minute, hour , day, week, month and year, then I am all for it. And, he doesn’t need no stinking media following him around during a holiday week-end. Why aren’t these media hounds with their families instead of stalking the President.

Melissa Harris Perry knows fully well what President Obama was referring too. She has no excuse here.

She knew he was referring to the well-documented epidemic of men in these urban communities who conceive children but don’t hang around to raise them or provide any financial or other support for them. Some of them in the process of not paying child support for their already-born offspring are busying having additional children with multiple women (and abandoning those when they are born). That is what PBO is referring to, and this is a REAL problem in these communities. If we cannot be at least honest with ourselves about this particular issue without twisting the President’s words into an attack on single moms, then this issue will never be properly addressed.

        • 234 yardarm756

MHP was a single mom until about a 1 year and a half ago. And I will no longer engage in this conversation. We all have our view points and this is not the forum to ague them.Be blessed.

MHP is a middle-class professional who is currently married and who has been married twice. She has one child from her first marriage.

She’s not in the same situation as those single (never married) moms in the Chicago inner cities. Apples and oranges.

By the way, I saw Zero Dark Thirty this weekend. Pretty good film, I enjoyed seeing a different angle to the bin Laden story — this time featuring the female intelligence officer that tracked bin Laden for so long. PBO was mentioned briefly as being thoughtful and analytical, but he was not portrayed. The compound raid was the most detailed I’ve seen thus far — it almost seemed like it was given real time, that’s how long it was. Nice work by the lead actress, too — overall it was a good movie experience.

So Fox went the Climate Meteor Truther route? A Russian politician said it was USA undermining their nation with some kind of weapon.

Sheesh, when 2 VPs of Fox in 2009 and 2010 said pres Obama was THEIR Opposition, I suppose, they meant it. THis is 1001% propaganda station. There is NOT one difference between Fox and the Late Rev Fr. Charles Coughlin’s Radio broadcasting. And they wonder why their audience really hate pres Obama? The brainwashing that Fox and their 1300 talk hate radio do are truly harmful.

I’m trying to be sympathetic here. The year is yet young (March is not even upon us), and I am trying to understand the point of view of the emo-Prog.

It appears that when the emo-Prog has to address any issue involving the President, he/she inevitably compares himself or herself to President Obama, and subsequently descends into a nightmarish state of self-loathing and despair, and insecurity that they could never, ever quite match up to him. It must be living hell to be an emo-Prog. Utter pain and torment, weeping, gnashing of teeth, angst, hellishness, are the daily experience of the emo-Prog.

Records released Fri. shed light on the secretive and disgraced Roman Catholic order, Legion of Christ, once led by the disgraced and baby daddy priest Marciel Maciel, featured in the recent HBO doc re. sex abuse and cover up in the Catholic Church. And how a Rhode Island woman donated $60 million to this order over the last few years, which is now being challenged by family members. It is stunning what people can be tricked into doing—blindly— in the name of religion.
