Well Chips, I know where, as our TOD female friends scroll through all those pictures, when it’s highly likely a surge in demand for naughty mats will happen 🙂

    Bringing this over

    Greetings TOD family

I just got off the phone from a town hall call sponsored by OFA – Organizing for Action.

Rahm Emmanuel and Austin Goolsbee where the featured speakers. The Director of OFA Jon Carson led the call.

Long story short – I am very encouraged by the level of support this group has and am confident that by working with them we can move the President’s agenda forward. We have deep support from the President and smart folks coming up with a strategy.

Rahm and Austin each spoke for about 10 minutes and then the rest of the call was Q and A.

    My takeaways

The President’s job plan will emphasize infrastructure investment and Education, pre K – through college.

Advice for pressuring Congress – make it local.
Don’t just call and say you want support for infrastructure, mention the crumbling bridges and potholes in your neighborhood.

List the preschools ill that will loose funding or public services that will be cut if the sequester is allowed to happen.

Pressure those elected officials that don’t vote our way using phone calls, twitter, Facebook and email

Thank elected officials who support our programs. They need to know we have their back at home.

Here are 2 things they have asked each of us to do

    1. Call our elected officials when key votes are up, remember to mention local specific when making that call – I promise to finish the updating of the contact congress page this weekend

    2. Write letters to the editor and again keep it local. I would suggest that we all share the letters we write – here on the blog to offer examples and inspiration to the group. Remember local media resources can be found at
    http://www.whatisworking.com/2011/09/local-media.html

Now my personal advice – JOIN THIS GROUP

Sign up to be a member of the OFA mailing list (even if you signed up before at barackobama.com this is different)

    Body-Building 😎

Wow…..it was after those pictures came out that so many could not handle the truth……DC/NY Journos. They saw how this was just not another POTUS to be. This was in 2008, after the election or was this in 2009 in HI?

Now if I was a man with a Body-Building body like that……hmm? I will be getting some sun-baiting……strolling down ans easing down the road 🙂

Proud, it hurts me SO much to think that you would think that I think that you would think that I think posting stuff like, dunno:

      is acceptable.

You’ll NEVER see anything like that here, honest. Ish.

        February 16, 2013 at 6:22 pm

Isn’t it a hoot how the rethugs are always trying to prove they are as good as PBO yet always come up short. Case in point, Paul the lying Ryan with his ‘hey, what about me? I can lift weights. See?’ pic. Media tried to make a big deal out of it but it fell flat.

It’s not just a sculpted body, it’s a body with charisma and style and a good spirit to go along with it.

But these little details continue to go over their heads.

Exactly LunarSea. They don’t get the nuances about PBO that makes him uniquely him. You just can’t replicate that by picking random disjointed characteristics and slapping them on anyone.

Wow…..I had no idea that Chips had these many pictures initially. Wow….she expanded the Yummy, Yum Yum pictures. Fantastic.

    😎 Thank 😉 You 🙂 Chips ❗

  14. February 16, 2013 at 5:23 pm

I love the body language in the picture of Mitch McConnell and President Obama. Mitch has his leg crossed away from the President, a sign he is uncomfortable, his right arm crosses his body as if protecting himself , and he’s leaning away from the President. On the other hand, President Obama’s leg is crossed toward McConnell, his arms are open and he’s sitting straight in his chair with only his head turned to talk. Guess which one is afraid of the other.

Seems this WH proposal is under-the-radar for the MSM (having connectivity problems with Tweetdeck right now, so this may have been tweeted by someone other than @USAtoday:

From article, highlights of WH proprosal:

White House immigration bill offers path to residency
A draft of a White House immigration proposal obtained by USA TODAY would allow illegal immigrants to become legal permanent residents within eight years.

The plan also would provide for more security funding and require business owners to check the immigration status of new hires within four years. In addition, the nation’s 11 million illegal immigrants could apply for a newly created “Lawful Prospective Immigrant” visa, under the bill being written by the White House.

In his first term, Obama often deferred to Congress on drafting and advancing major legislation, including the Affordable Care Act. He has openly supported the efforts in Congress to move immigration legislation, and just this week met with Democratic senators to discuss their proposals.
But two weeks ago in Las Vegas, while outlining his immigration plans, Obama made clear that he would not wait too long for Congress to get moving.

According to the White House draft, people would need to pass a criminal background check, submit biometric information and pay fees to qualify for the new visa. If approved, they would be allowed to legally reside in the U.S., work and leave the country for short periods of time.
They could then apply for legal permanent residence, commonly known as a green card, within eight years if they learn English and “the history and government of the United States” and pay back taxes. That would then clear the path for them to apply for U.S. citizenship.

    • February 16, 2013 at 6:12 pm

Tweetdeck is slowwwwww-ly coming back to life; some Politicos and Buzzfeeders have picked up on USAtoday leak.

Hope the White House continues to circumvent those rabble-rousers at those two publications. I like Buzzfeed; they have a conservative-leaning political staff, but they have a sense of humor. Conservatives, of course, believe Buzzfeed has a liberal lean.

      • February 16, 2013 at 6:28 pm

BuzzFeed is really Politico Lite – some decent people there, like Andrew Kaczynski, but most of the rest are the dregs, like the guy they hired from The Blaze, whose name, happily, I can’t remember. And Ben Smith, lest we forget, was the creature who pushed the Rev Wright ‘story’ day after day after day in Politico in 2008, a complete piece of RW shit.

        • 74 dotster3
          February 16, 2013 at 6:42 pm

Ben Smith is another jealous jerk. I saw he tweeted that he was more interested in watching the unfolding Dorner chase in Ca. than some dumb SOTU.
And speaking of jerks, anyone notice that Noah Rothman on mediaite is relentlessly anti-Obama. Every story/event has an anti-Obama nugget to expound upon if he just looks hard enough. I’m sick of these creeps.

Evening all -Maineiac in da house. Checking in before building a fire in the wood stove and hunkering down for more blizzard like conditions on the way. Just a pretty light snow falling all day. Funny how Mother Nature can turn up the heat and throw us all for a loop, going from picturesque snowfall to blizzard in no time flat.

Anyway, just want to say: it’s official. I am an Obot! I knew everyone of those pictures. Even the last one when PBO stopped by a campaign office and decided to do some calls and the person on the phone didn’t believe it was him. He had to work to convince them it was really PBO. That face was just perfect for the situation.

Ahh memory lane a la ChipsChica, the honest. ish one 😆

      Thanks for tweeting this.

We need to get Japan’s opinion of the US above 50% (not surprising that China is viewed unfavorably by 85% of Japanese).

Hope POTUS spends some quality time in Japan during his next Asia trip (and not vomiting in the PM’s lap ala GHWBush 41)

      • February 16, 2013 at 7:18 pm

NP, Its an under the radar issue Japan/China in U.S. media. I’ve seen higher #’s in the 80’s when it comes to PBO personally, let me see if i can find the graph I saw….

        • 90 LunarSea
          February 16, 2013 at 8:07 pm

You are correct. They are unhappy with the US over the bases there. I don’t have enough info on ‘why’ because our media is so useless, but there is some discomfort with us being there. Do you remember some protests about this when PBO visited. I’m happy to say that was the ONLY thing they were protesting against, but the people interviewed were still very gracious and not given to the nastiness we see hear.

Anyway PBO was able to mend relations to some degree in this area the last time he was there. And US came to their aid big time after the Tsunami -so there’s that. But they really do like PBO.

          • February 16, 2013 at 8:25 pm

The ‘why’ is the residents of Okinawa are sick of hearing fighter jets coming and going 24/7. And the U.S. was going to expand the base there, which sent residents up in arms and cost 2 PM their jobs in the last 4 years b/c they had agreed to the expansion.

            • 92 LunarSea
              February 16, 2013 at 8:47 pm

wow I knew he was discussing our bases with them, but didn’t know it was in regards to expanding. For a tiny quiet island it must be very jarring to have that happening all the time. Those darn things are super loud. Hopefully PBO has tried to work toward a solution that would not be such an intrusion into their daily lives. I can’t say as I blame them and since he is one to put himself in others shoes I will trust that he is taking their concerns into account.

      • February 16, 2013 at 7:28 pm

        • February 16, 2013 at 7:41 pm

Great graphic. Now I remember seeing your posting this tweet before, but Chips moves things right along, so I forgot about it. 😦

Japan does love PBO; he’s got all the qualities they so admire. After his 2008 election, I recall seeing an article that said the most popular “Learn English” books were based on PBO’s speeches, which of course are a great example for everyone in the world.

Thank God GWBush is puttering around Texas (and how clueless are the GOP who think Americans don’t remember how awful our global reputation was during his term).

        • 102 LunarSea
          February 16, 2013 at 8:00 pm

So my take away from this graph is:

China doesn’t like anyone but they’re on the fence with Putin (can’t decide if they like him or not) but they like him better than Ban Ki-Moon. Germans love Obama more that Merkel but they none-the-less really like Merkel. US likes it’s president best. Is on the fence about Merkel and likes Ban Ki-Moon more than Putin by a full 10%. Japan really likes PBO, likes Merkel & Ban Ki-Moon but really doesn’t like Russia and Russia likes noone but Putin, altho it’s trying to like Merkel

    • 115 LunarSea
      February 16, 2013 at 6:43 pm

They are all so good but my fav has to be the hands touching. That was from when they toured the gulf during the #BPOilSpill I think.

My favs of the two of them, and goodness knows I have lots of ‘favs’ of the two of them together, are:

      1. the hands touching (no gazing into eyes or anything and yet the love and support come through loud and clear)
      2. at the first inaug. in the freight elevator after he put his coat around her, because I love all the people in the background trying so hard to NOT look and all the time they are in their own little world
      3. viewing the Chicago skyline. There was such a longing in the way they stood there.
      4. the Jarrett wedding -no words needed
      5. them walking during the 2nd inaug. I. Really. Love. Those. Knowing what they had to go through to get to there… Those signify ‘Triumph’ to me.

Of course there are tons more, with heads of states, with kids, with the girls, all decked out in finery, but for some reason those always make me swoon over their love for each other.

What are some of your favs of the two of them?

      • 116 theo67
        February 16, 2013 at 7:52 pm

The Jarrett wedding is now my new favourite.

That is a nice one, but it’s hard for me to pick one or two favorites. Anyone with POTUS, FLOTUS, Malia, Sasha, Bo, is my favorite. I like the ones with POTUS and FLOTUS with kids. That one with Mr. Turtle, forget that one for sure. Thank goodness you don’t have any with Boehner.

        February 16, 2013 at 9:20 pm

        Oh, that’s easy, LunarS.
My favouritest (at the moment of this writing) is the one with the little girl resting comfortably on his shoulder with the picture of the other president behind them.

My favourite at THIS moment is the picture of the little girl with the blue flower in her hair giving the Pres a flirty wave.

My other favourite is ALL those babies and toddlers looking him in the eye.

An old favourite was the group of babies looking at Pres through the daycare window and the little miss who gave him the ‘what-are-you-doing-looking-in-my-window look.

Another favourite is when Sasha gives the camera/media that dignified ‘oh, go away’ look.

        My other favourite……..okay, I’ll stop. 😉

    February 16, 2013 at 4:40 pm

    Thought provoking for sure.

A father put his 3 year old daughter to bed, told her a story and listened to her prayers which ended by saying, “God bless Mommy, God bless Daddy, God bless Grandma and good-bye Grandpa

The father asked, ‘Why did you say good-bye Grandpa?’

The little girl said, “I don’t know daddy, it just seemed like the thing to do.”

The next day grandpa died. The father thought it was a strange coincidence.

A few months later the father put the girl to bed and listened to her prayers which went like this, “God bless Mommy, God Bless Daddy and good-bye Grandma.”

The next day the grandmother died.

“Holy crap” thought the father, “this kid is in contact with the other side.”

Several weeks later when the girl was going to bed, the dad heard her say, “God bless Mommy and good-bye Daddy.”

He practically went into shock. He couldn’t sleep all night and got up at the crack of dawn to go to his office. He was nervous as a cat all day, had lunch and watched the clock.

He figured if he could get by until midnight he would be okay. He felt safe in the office, so instead of going home at the end of the day he stayed there, drinking coffee, looking at his watch and jumping at every sound.

Finally midnight arrived; he breathed a sigh of relief and went home.

When he got home his wife said, “I’ve never seen you work so late. What’s the matter?”

He said, “I don’t want to talk about it, I’ve just spent the worst day of my life.”

She said, “You think you had a bad day, you’ll never believe what happened to me. This morning my golf pro dropped dead in the middle of my lesson!”

Bigger question – why is Rubio going there right before the President’s visit? Given that Rubio is still relatively new to the Senate, and hasn’t any credibility on domestic matters – let along foreign affairs – why is he sticking his nose into a very sensitive situation? These people drive me crazy! No thought given to the state of the world or the consequences of their actions – if it gets in the way of their political prospects.

Theo, as always, your commentary makes so much sense! Sometimes I sound like a broken record, but I still blame the U.S. media for letting people like Rubio off-the-hook? Let’s hope that Israelis, Palestinians and Jordanians, know that for the next four years they have to deal with President Obama and not with some junior Senator who is utterly clueless about foreign affairs.

Thanks for the kind words, nathkatun7! And I agree – whether or not Bibi and his cohorts like it, they have to deal with President Obama for the next four years. And the world sentiment is moving against them, not towards them. They better learn on which side their bread is buttered.

Uh, LS, the scale’s not calibrated that high. Romney had a lot of money and the potential at least of being POTUS. Anybody talking to Marco for two minutes will get what a light weight he is. I hope he’s tolerated and then politely dismissed to go home and play with his toys.

One day, I would like to see my favorite picture of POTUS with a baby. I can never find it when I search, and it doesn’t show up in collections. I believe they might have been in a high school gym or something. This baby looks like he’s about a month old. President Obama is cuddling him close to his chest The baby his turned to his right. There is just something so deeply touching to me. I stared at it for a long time when it was published and I kick myself that I didn’t save it.

The hawks were wrong: Iraq is worse off now

“On Saturday 15 February 2003, more than a million of us – students, toddlers, Christians, Muslims, nuns, Telegraph readers – gathered in Hyde Park for the biggest public demonstration in British history. “Not in my name,” we chanted, as a series of speakers – from Charles Kennedy to Jesse Jackson – lined up to denounce the impending invasion of Iraq.”

“So, Saddam is gone – but at what cost? Iraq has been destroyed and hundreds of thousands of innocent people have lost their lives, as the direct result of an unnecessary, unprovoked war that, according to the former chief justice Lord Bingham, was a “serious violation of international law”. “It was worse than a crime,” said the French diplomat Talleyrand, responding to the execution of the Duc d’Enghien by Napoleon; “it was a blunder.” Iraq turned Talleyrand’s aphorism on its head – it was worse than a blunder; it was a crime.”

    http://www.newstatesman.com/politics/2013/02/hawkswere-wrong-iraq-worse-now

We said NEVER AGAIN after Vietnam. We need to stop saying NEVER AGAIN and start enforcing our control over OUR government to be certain what our government did to the people of Vietnam and Iraq never happens. We know what we need to do. We proved in in 2008 and 2012. We must only get stronger in our commitment to do it again in 2014, 2016 and continuously thereafter.

That hit my funny bone! My friend and neighbor and I went to a hearing of our States DEQ. It was concerning a power plant to be constructed within five miles of our home. She is brilliant with props. The company claimed they were using the latest and greatest techniques in their building codes. They were fifty years old. She looked around her house and found something fifty years old. The black Manuel typewriter! She brought it and asked if any one wanted to go back in time to use this typewriter instead of their computers. No, but they got permission to proceed and it’s in operation. Must keep going Forward! 😉

Why is it that everything the R’s stand for is grounded in cruelty. They are completely without compassion. This bill will go nowhere, but I want to make sure a lot of women hear about it and Rubio’s sponsorship. Bills like these are a throwback to a time of patriarchal domination and make Rubio look like an old man–out of touch with the current world. How this moron got to be a senator is beyond me. He would be sadly under qualified as a rep to the Florida state house.

Pope Benedict’s decision to live in the Vatican after he resigns will provide him with security and privacy. It will also offer legal protection from any attempt to prosecute him in connection with sexual abuse cases around the world, Church sources and legal experts say.

“His continued presence in the Vatican is necessary, otherwise he might be defenseless. He wouldn’t have his immunity, his prerogatives, his security, if he is anywhere else,” said one Vatican official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

    ///

The final key consideration is the pope’s potential exposure to legal claims over the Catholic Church’s sexual abuse scandals.

In 2010, for example, Benedict was named as a defendant in a law suit alleging that he failed to take action as a cardinal in 1995 when he was allegedly told about a priest who had abused boys at a U.S. school for the deaf decades earlier. The lawyers withdrew the case last year and the Vatican said it was a major victory that proved the pope could not be held liable for the actions of abusive priests.

Benedict is currently not named specifically in any other case. The Vatican does not expect any more but is not ruling out the possibility.

“(If he lived anywhere else) then we might have those crazies who are filing lawsuits, or some magistrate might arrest him like other (former) heads of state have been for alleged acts while he was head of state,” one source said.

Another official said: “While this was not the main consideration, it certainly is a corollary, a natural result.”

    • 198 jackiegrumbacher
      February 16, 2013 at 9:50 pm

Yeah, people who bring suit because their lives have been destroyed are crazies and the Vatican is now a place where popes can hide out so they won’t be subject to the law. Does the Vatican see how strange this is?

Thank you Jackie! She is exceptional and ‘self-taught’ – takes various workshops but her art career began on a lunch break in the Spring of 1983 when she did a pencil sketch (in less than 30 min) of Andrew Wyeth’s famous 1955 painting of his son Nicholas (you can see the original on p.53 of this document from the Art Institute of Chicago http://www.artic.edu/sites/default/files/…/AIC1967AWyeth_comb.pdf). That treasured sketch I see every morning as I awake because it, along with several other early sketches she did, is in a mounted collage we have in our bedroom). She totally conveyed not only the quality of the painting but you literally feel as if Nicholas is sitting there waiting for his dad to finish 🙂

We were in Chicago yesterday for the Chicago Auto Show and did *not* know that PBO was going to be there. I know, I know – but I’ve been kind of off the grid lately. Anyhow – I wanted to check with you experts or Chicago residents about whether PBO passed anywhere near McCormick Place? I heard that PBO landed at O’Hare and then took a chopper to “downtown” – but where? We got to McCormick Place around 11AM and some access points that we normally would have taken were mysteriously blocked off. I know he spoke about 6-7 miles from there, but did he pass near the Auto show? Just curious (and sorry I missed him. He probably won’t be coming to Iowa as much now there’s no election to worry about).

Rubio: Reported Obama immigration plan ‘dead on arrival’
By JENNIFER EPSTEIN | 2/16/13 10:01 PM EST
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said Saturday that President Obama’s immigration plan will be “dead on arrival” on Capitol Hill if it looks like the proposal reported by USA Today.

“If actually proposed, the president’s bill would be dead on arrival in Congress, leaving us with unsecured borders and a broken legal immigration system for years to come,” said Rubio, who’s seen as a key figure in pushing a bipartisan immigration bill through the Senate.

A White House spokesman told POLITICO earlier Saturday that the administration continues to support a bipartisan plan from the Hill and has not produced a final bill to send to Congress. But Rubio’s statement is combative, accusing Obama of releasing a proposal without getting Republican input.

“It’s a mistake for the White House to draft immigration legislation without seeking input from Republican members of Congress,” Rubio said.

“President Obama’s leaked immigration proposal is disappointing to those of us working on a serious solution. The president’s bill repeats the failures of past legislation. It fails to follow through on previously broken promises to secure our borders, creates a special pathway that puts those who broke our immigration laws at an advantage over those who chose to do things the right way and come here legally, and does nothing to address guest workers or future flow, which serious immigration experts agree is critical to preventing future influxes of illegal immigrants.”

“Much like the president’s self-described ‘stop gap’ Deferred Action measure last year, this legislation is half-baked and seriously flawed,” Rubio added. “It would actually make our immigration problems worse, and would further undermine the American people’s confidence in Washington’s ability to enforce our immigration laws and reform our broken immigration system.
    -/
DOA??? Everything not getting through, we need to throw them out in 2014.
A very important election. I hope Democrats don’t sit home on their laurels?

    • February 16, 2013 at 10:42 pm

This is what has Rubio pissed off? 😦

By JENNIFER EPSTEIN | 2/16/13 8:03 PM EST
The White House is insisting that President Obama remains engaged in working with the Senate to generate bipartisan immigration legislation, even as USA Today reported Saturday on the details of what it says is a draft bill from the administration.

Provisions include creating an eight-year path to residency for undocumented immigrants and permitting immigrants to apply for lawful prospective immigrant visas, the paper said, citing a document the paper said it obtained from an administration official. The bill would also call for more border patrol agents and add 140 immigration judges to the bench to speed up the process of adjudicating cases.

The White House would not confirm the proposals outlined in USA Today’s report or say whether they represented current administration positions. Obama has said that he has his own immigration bill but will only send it to Congress if lawmakers are “unable to move forward in a timely fashion.”

But Obama is still giving Congress more time.

“The president has made clear the principles upon which he believes any commonsense immigration reform effort should be based,” spokesman Clark Stevens said in a statement to POLITICO that matched the one he gave to USA Today. “We continue to work in support of a bipartisan effort, and while the president has made clear he will move forward if Congress fails to act, progress continues to be made and the administration has not prepared a final bill to submit.”

Obama has shown a willingness to work with Congress and hosted four Senate Democrats working with Republicans on a bill — Chuck Schumer, Dick Durbin, Michael Bennet and Bob Menendez — at the White House on Wednesday.

The measures reported by USA Today are widely accepted and have gotten bipartisan support align with ideas that have gained support in previous pushes for immigration reform. They fit with the immigration proposal Obama put forward in May 2011 and with positions that Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and other Republicans have endorsed going back more than half a decade. The eight-year path to residency is one piece that hasn’t been public before.

    Dear Chips,

On considerable reflection of the event, this past week, of Jimmy Carter IV meeting President Obama, it is important to remember that whomever the courageous person is that recorded the Boca Raton #BainMitt catastrophe, it was only when that person, months after first posting the intentionally obscured segments of the video on YouTube in May, 2012, that the same person posted again under the assumed name of ‘Rachel Maddow’ that catalyzed many to begin paying attention.

It was UT who brought that video to the attention of the TOD community and you featured it. Of course, for all the correct (reality-based reasons) folk here were dutifully skeptical, but it seemed highly probable that it really was #BainMitt spewing his plutocratic nonsense to an assembly of similarly avaricious, wicked elitists. What captured my attention and that of many, way beyond the comments about the #47Percent that President Obama’s organization focused and that truly sunk #BainMitt, were his comments about a concentration camp of female slave laborers that he described callously and that exposed just how heartless, how cruel a creature he is.

Indeed, #BainMitt owned and then expanded ownership in Global Tech Appliances – the precise female slave labor concentration camp he was recorded describing.

When David Corn made the first release of a significantly higher quality version of the video those segments were absent. Within 24h, however, he updated the Mother Jones site with the complete version.

I bring this to your and the entire TOD community’s attention because way beyond the blatant disregard for most Americans that #BainMitt’s 47% percent segment revealed, he also revealed just how coldly, how brutally detached he and his fellow plutocrats are from exploiting slaves, be they female Asian slaves or whomever.

You have in your TOD archives all the posts, tweets, comments, etc relevant to this issue. For the sake of perfecting not only our Union but eradicating slavery, of any form, please preserve that archive. I think David Corn has actually missed the core evil of that video and perhaps you and he can collaborate on telling the story of a candidate for the Presidency of the United States of America who would have been the envy of Senator Jefferson Davis and every slave owner in pre-Emancipaton Proclamation (and since) America.

Thank you for all you have created, enabled and nurtured at TOD. You have my complete admiration.

Bottom line – PREVAIL WOMEN (you’ve got lots of support from us males who have a clue and are not in any way threatened by the notion that EVERY PERSON is endowed ‘with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.’
