3:40 EST: President Obama delivers remarks at Hyde Park Academy, Chicago
I think that carolmaewy has a secret plan for knowing when a new thread is posted. At first I thought VC had simply mentored her well with the leaning on the door thing, but I think differently now. Carol would you care to share with the less fortunate, what that plan is? After all, a wise president named PBO said “I am my brother’s/sister’s keeper.”
good hawaii morning chips and tod peeps! hope everybody’s having a terrific friday, ready to celebrate presidents’ day–which we should now call president’s day!! it’s a day for him and all who love him to celebrate this spectacular human being, our president!
also, have you seen this? incredible, take-you-back photos from 1963.
Oh Susanne, those photos are stunning – what an extraordinary year, mainly of the heartbreaking kind. How on earth did people get themselves through it?
In 1963 I was in my first year of college–GASP. There was so much happening as I was coping with the first year shock of being away from home and in a new world that it was like a constant bombardment. I thought my heart was going to break when I watched the JFK funeral and much of the insane violence going on in the south seemed surreal. What a crazy, crazy time and one I would not want to go through again, even if it meant being young and eighteen again.
chips, the answer to that question is beyond the reach of my understanding. but the power of these images is their unflinching truth: the brutality of racial injustice, the courage of those who fought it, the pivot point in our nation’s history are all gritty reality. this is essential information for all americans, and especially for voters and public servants. hard to look at, maybe hard to believe, but real, true, and deadly serious.
Many very painful memories depicted here. Dogs and fire hoses turned on fellow citizens informed my views about what kind of America I didn’t want to live in.
Agree, Susan. Sometimes when I think of all the racism on display today, I forget that how brutal and institutionalized it was then. Horrible, horrible times.
I lived through all of this. Looking at these photos, many of which are iconic, and re-living those times (how brave these young people were!) makes me marvel even more that 50 years later we have a twice-elected A-A president whose wisdom, intellect, and insight is changing the world. Gives me chills.
His wife is also involved!? Wow – that’s very sad. I recall when they appeared on that interview a few years back, and were protesting their innocence, and Jesse Jr. even got teary as his wife sat next to him, comforting him. I felt bad that they were getting dragged into a gutter over the seat-selling scandal and actually thought that he was being truthful (back then).
Well, he cheated on her. She cheated and embezzled as his campaign manager. He rolled, implicating her for his plea bargain.
And when she resigned her Chicago alderman seat, she told Emanuel that she would choose her successor (she wanted to name her assistant, who didn’t live in the district), and if he insisted on doing the choosing, she would lock up her office and not give access to anything in that office. Knowing that she was thisclose to being indicted, along with Jesse.
Ari Melber- but but but Susan rice Susan rice it’s the democrats fault fuck chuck Hagel he is a Republican it’s the Presidents fault the president isn’t doing his job blah blah blah.
You know what? The far left is stuck in a bubble too. Both the Far Right/Left see The President always at fault.
#Bubble
Yep, but as we proved in two presidential elections, there are more of us than there are of them. There’s a whole very big segment of this country that is sane and wants a good future for the country and for our children.
That 35 foot meteor that exploded in Russia this morning, was just as powerful as the Hiroshima Bomb!
Also, if I lived near there, I would go Meteorite hunting! Good money. Just saying…
It was interesting to see Mayor Emanuel. It’s an honor and privilege to see and hear President Obama. But the most wonderful thing I saw happening in Chicago was MSNBC’s interview of two young gentlemen, you may have seen it, believe they said they were seniors at the academy, and they stood up and not only were they not nervous being interviewed for the TV camera, but they explicitly stated what President Obama had said to them in their private meeting, about keeping their goals, staying in school, believing in God, and everything else they said that I’ve forgotten – but which I think they won’t be forgetting, any time soon. That was a sight.
And the next best thing I heard was just now, when President Obama opened up to the larger audience with, “I wish I had a father who was around and involved.” He’s passing on lessons about life that they’ll never find just in their textbooks. Love this man.
So sorry about that, meta, and I’m sending you a hug even now. Coincidentally, I lost contact with my dad for 3 decades at an early age, and finally got to meet him as an adult when my mom – who apparently was “carrying a torch” since shortly after WWII for him – decided we should bring him home and take care of him in his final illness, before he passed away. What a woman! It was a gift for me, too.
President Obama giving another brilliant speech. Man, does he know what he’s doing,—-the very important points he is making. I am in total awe of him—–once again.
Well that Trump Plaza in Atlantic City looks like a piece of junk to me. It needs major refurbishing and pales in comparison to the sleeker and more modern structures that have been build since its time. I pity the people who bought it at any price.
To me also; however, I love that not only did it sell for less than 10% of the 1984 construction cost, indexed for inflation 1984’s $210,000,000 equals $456,897,814.54 in 2012. Karma wins every time!
I am almost speechless—-was this not the most reflective, least political, totally personal and Riveting speech ever? From the “I wish I had a father around” to the last syllabel.
There is nobody like this President. Not even close.
And he took a lot of time greeting the audience. This is his home community, and his wife’s home town – these kids and their futures mean a lot to him. I recall a story from his first book, when he wanted to quit after a demoralizing low turnout at one of their functions. He looked out the window and saw some young boys throwing rocks at an abandoned building, and he realized that someone needed to stand up for them. The mission for those kids has stayed with the President – that’s very clear.
I’m not fooled by Ari’s tweet. President Obama knows all about stable families – he maintains one, with the First Lady. The President spoke from his heart and also meant all parents need to be involved: single moms, single dads, moms and dads – including LGBT moms and dads, grandparents, relatives, guardians. People like Ari Fleischer try to make points off people’s lives … President Obama gives us teachable moments each and every day, and more are listening to the latter leader, PBO, than the former blowhard, Fleischer.
I do agree, however, that it was one of the more important speeches he has given. Sharing wisdom on so many vital topics as we try to make a dent in all the gun violence and economic despair, the root causes, the ways out.
Definitely. Well said. (Comments from Ari Fleischer and the others are just a distraction.) I plan to read a transcript of PBO’s speech … and pass it around.
This president didn’t say anything today that he had not said before. So Ari Fleicher I am borrowing Jovie’s two middle fingers’ posts from yesterday and I am adding two more and that is what I say to you….weasel.
I’m back on Jesse Jackson, Jr. I never cared for him myself, a bit too arrogant for my taste. I am actually not surprised, but having said so, I believe lots of politicians convert campaign funds to personal use. He just didn’t do it right. Just like Blago…politicians are guided by quid pro quo. If you cast your votes according to the people who support your campaign, what’s the difference? He just didn’t do it right and pissed people off in the process. 🙂
Question: Does anyone know what happens to a candidate’s war-chest when he retires or loses a race. Sen. Bayh retired with $11 million. And remember when Sarah Palin used her PAC to take a family vacation? I’m thinking I’m in the wrong business. 🙂
(Reuters) – U.S. securities regulators on Friday filed suit against unknown traders in the options of ketchup maker H.J. Heinz Co , alleging they traded on inside information before the company announced a deal to be acquired for $23 billion by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway and Brazil’s 3G Capital.
The suit, filed in federal court in Manhattan, cites “highly suspicious trading” in Heinz call options just prior to the February 14 announcement of the deal. It claims the traders are either in, or trading through accounts in, Zurich, Switzerland.
Its a shame his hubris w/ Rolling Stone cost him his job. Word is he is the only Gen. Karzai trusted these last 10 years, if anything could have expedited our withdrawal out of Afghan, I would have taken it, faults and all. He also came out for Assault weapons ban too.
Thanks for the info, LP. The last information I saw was…10 tons, came in at 33,000 mph, was the size of an SUV and exploded at 18 to 32 miles above ground.
NP I have a weatherman in my twitter feed, thought it was interesting stuff and remember the concern about kilotons pertaining to the N.Korea nuke test so added that in there for perspective
One of the things that always bugs me is when I hear about people complaining the President hasn’t done anything for black people, because it speaks to a lazy mind that needs every connection laid out for them. Today’s speech really brought home that the actions the President has taken, and is specifically proposing now, will benefit hard hit and disadvantaged communities like those in the urban, predominantly black areas. From the Stimulus, which supported jobs, unemployment and food assistance – including to those black communities that were hit hardest by recession. Education programs and improving public education and public funding for college improves the educational opportunities for black kids – and I believe there are specific programs that were addressed for predominantly black colleges. The Affordable Care Act had programs specific to black people and the diseases most occurring in black people, and provides subsidies for under-served communities. And when the President outlined his holistic plan today for improving economic situations in targeted communities as a way to improve conditions, but also provide a way for communities to be less vulnerable to gun violence – that helps black families.
Just because a program isn’t titled an “African American Program” doesn’t mean it isn’t targeted to help African American communities. And the Tavis Smiley’s and Company, who can’t pause their Obama-bashing long enough to acknowledge the benefits that black communities have experienced as a result of the President’s policies that are open to the entire country, are either lazy, or willfully misinforming and instigating.
Maybe it goes back to Jan. ’09, when President Obama was sworn in, every dem, lib, emoprog thought each and every wish would be fulfilled in a matter of days.
In the 1960’s, so many of us were psychologically invested in MLK and RFK………..then we lost them. our focus and our will.
President Obama has given all us old hippies and flower children a new focus and a new determination. He’s in it for the long haul, sees the bigger picture and inspires us to see the vision.
Howdy!
bonjour
¡hola Anybody home?
Hello carolmaewy and congrats on #1 🙂 We’re all here my friend.

Oh, I’m up here with the TOD movers and shakers.

That’s where I went too. After signing in of course. ¡hola 😀
We tied?
Jeez louise!
We tied with Chips! 😀
That’s why i mentioned being with the movers and shakers, though in truth you were here when I arrived. 😉
Same time, same place. There is one more with our time. 😉
Look at them. They had no idea. LOL!!!
INORITE? They and we have come so far. It’s been one hell of a fun ride.
Its been crazy.
I’m like a Golden Retriever, easily trained. The system used was the Pavlov dog research! : idea: 😯
I was busy blathering away on the last thread. Do not have this rhythm down at all.

Hadiya Pendleton’s mom is in the audience.
What a strong woman. And I think her involvement may be helping to keep her strong, for the time being. God bless the family.

The asteroid passes safely beyond the Earth; President Obama will be speaking to the nation in Chicago. The world’s looking brighter!
April fool’s Day, The Congress and Senate probably going to be there, that’s why they decide to have it on April Fool’s Day.
Good one!
Anniebella!!!! So disrespectful of Congress!! 😆
When I speak of Congress you know that I am mostly talking about those extreme right wing conservative Republicans.
Ha! Didn’t realize you had posted that already.
Federal charges filed against Jesse Jackson Jr. and his wife today. What a sad story this is.

Well, he has been diagnosed as bi polar.
He needs a Pyshiatrist to testify on his behalf, and then he will be fine!
Psychiatrist

Tawdry on so many levels.
Goodness gracious – the plot thickens!
Okay, let’s go! I’m getting impatient.

I did, and fav’d it too. 🙂
Thanks, sugar! Felt good. (Ari has more promise than some of them, but he’s going off the rails.)
I wonder if they are Paid to do just that?
Felt so good to retweet this!
🙂
Yep, but as we proved in two presidential elections, there are more of us than there are of them. There’s a whole very big segment of this country that is sane and wants a good future for the country and for our children.
That’s because we are pragmatic and the Far right and left are ideologues.

Wow, JO’B, we are sisters in this way, too. {{{{Hugs right back}}}} You mom sounds like a very special lady.
Thanks, O’sister, she was!
You know meta, that is why POTUS is the best father to Malia and Sasha, because he doesn’t want to be an absent figure in his daughters.
In his daughters lives.
Exactly. He knows in his heart and his soul what it means to be there for them, to parent them, to enjoy and learn from them.
I saw that too. I was very proud of them too.
President Obama giving another brilliant speech. Man, does he know what he’s doing,—-the very important points he is making. I am in total awe of him—–once again.

“to me also” = I agree that it looks like a piece of junk… LOL
They’ll probably do a major renovation.
The First Lady is going to Aspen, hanging out and Skiing.
As she did last year, and the year before with the girls. It’s their annual mother-daughter President’s Day getaway weekend.

Yes, and I think he spent a lot of time with male students. That might be why it started late.
Not so quick, Ari Fleischer, you dawg:

JO…you are not giving Ari a chance! 🙂
I know, and I felt so guilty! 🙂
I do agree, however, that it was one of the more important speeches he has given. Sharing wisdom on so many vital topics as we try to make a dent in all the gun violence and economic despair, the root causes, the ways out.

So glad VP and PBO are keeping their foot on the gas, re: gun violence.
(Reuters) – U.S. securities regulators on Friday filed suit against unknown traders in the options of ketchup maker H.J. It seems like this write-up was from Nov/2011 – sure hope they are not still experiencing the same difficulties. Ugh!
Just realized that VC! Some DOD reporter linked it, I was trying out my headline writing skills, so I am still satisfied….
Alert: John McCain and Tweety to be on Meet the Press this Sunday.
Yes, Tweety thought it was a wonderful idea. Maybe he could push Graham out and be one of the three musketeers, with the coyote woman. I need a nap.
