I think that carolmaewy has a secret plan for knowing when a new thread is posted. At first I thought VC had simply mentored her well with the leaning on the door thing, but I think differently now. Carol would you care to share with the less fortunate, what that plan is? After all, a wise president named PBO said “I am my brother’s/sister’s keeper.”

What a strong woman. And I think her involvement may be helping to keep her strong, for the time being. God bless the family.

Oh Susanne, those photos are stunning – what an extraordinary year, mainly of the heartbreaking kind. How on earth did people get themselves through it?

        February 15, 2013 at 4:51 pm

In 1963 I was in my first year of college–GASP. There was so much happening as I was coping with the first year shock of being away from home and in a new world that it was like a constant bombardment. I thought my heart was going to break when I watched the JFK funeral and much of the insane violence going on in the south seemed surreal. What a crazy, crazy time and one I would not want to go through again, even if it meant being young and eighteen again.

chips, the answer to that question is beyond the reach of my understanding. but the power of these images is their unflinching truth: the brutality of racial injustice, the courage of those who fought it, the pivot point in our nation’s history are all gritty reality. this is essential information for all americans, and especially for voters and public servants. hard to look at, maybe hard to believe, but real, true, and deadly serious.

    • February 15, 2013 at 4:46 pm

Many very painful memories depicted here. Dogs and fire hoses turned on fellow citizens informed my views about what kind of America I didn’t want to live in.

        February 15, 2013 at 4:52 pm

Agree, Susan. Sometimes when I think of all the racism on display today, I forget that how brutal and institutionalized it was then. Horrible, horrible times.

I lived through all of this. Looking at these photos, many of which are iconic, and re-living those times (how brave these young people were!) makes me marvel even more that 50 years later we have a twice-elected A-A president whose wisdom, intellect, and insight is changing the world. Gives me chills.

Federal charges filed against Jesse Jackson Jr. and his wife today. What a sad story this is.

His wife is also involved!? Wow – that’s very sad. I recall when they appeared on that interview a few years back, and were protesting their innocence, and Jesse Jr. even got teary as his wife sat next to him, comforting him. I felt bad that they were getting dragged into a gutter over the seat-selling scandal and actually thought that he was being truthful (back then).

      • February 15, 2013 at 4:44 pm

Well, he has been diagnosed as bi polar.
He needs a Pyshiatrist to testify on his behalf, and then he will be fine!

Well, he cheated on her. She cheated and embezzled as his campaign manager. He rolled, implicating her for his plea bargain.

And when she resigned her Chicago alderman seat, she told Emanuel that she would choose her successor (she wanted to name her assistant, who didn’t live in the district), and if he insisted on doing the choosing, she would lock up her office and not give access to anything in that office. Knowing that she was thisclose to being indicted, along with Jesse.

        Tawdry on so many levels.

It was interesting to see Mayor Emanuel. It’s an honor and privilege to see and hear President Obama. But the most wonderful thing I saw happening in Chicago was MSNBC’s interview of two young gentlemen, you may have seen it, believe they said they were seniors at the academy, and they stood up and not only were they not nervous being interviewed for the TV camera, but they explicitly stated what President Obama had said to them in their private meeting, about keeping their goals, staying in school, believing in God, and everything else they said that I’ve forgotten – but which I think they won’t be forgetting, any time soon. That was a sight.

And the next best thing I heard was just now, when President Obama opened up to the larger audience with, “I wish I had a father who was around and involved.” He’s passing on lessons about life that they’ll never find just in their textbooks. Love this man.

    • February 15, 2013 at 4:58 pm

I felt the pain in his voice when he said that. I lost contact with my mom for 3 decades at an early age and it’s something that never truly heals.

So sorry about that, meta, and I’m sending you a hug even now. Coincidentally, I lost contact with my dad for 3 decades at an early age, and finally got to meet him as an adult when my mom – who apparently was “carrying a torch” since shortly after WWII for him – decided we should bring him home and take care of him in his final illness, before he passed away. What a woman! It was a gift for me, too.

I am almost speechless—-was this not the most reflective, least political, totally personal and Riveting speech ever? From the “I wish I had a father around” to the last syllabel.
There is nobody like this President. Not even close.

      February 15, 2013 at 6:22 pm

And he took a lot of time greeting the audience. This is his home community, and his wife’s home town – these kids and their futures mean a lot to him. I recall a story from his first book, when he wanted to quit after a demoralizing low turnout at one of their functions. He looked out the window and saw some young boys throwing rocks at an abandoned building, and he realized that someone needed to stand up for them. The mission for those kids has stayed with the President – that’s very clear.

Not so quick, Ari Fleischer, you dawg:

I’m not fooled by Ari’s tweet. President Obama knows all about stable families – he maintains one, with the First Lady. The President spoke from his heart and also meant all parents need to be involved: single moms, single dads, moms and dads – including LGBT moms and dads, grandparents, relatives, guardians. People like Ari Fleischer try to make points off people’s lives … President Obama gives us teachable moments each and every day, and more are listening to the latter leader, PBO, than the former blowhard, Fleischer.

This president didn’t say anything today that he had not said before. So Ari Fleicher I am borrowing Jovie’s two middle fingers’ posts from yesterday and I am adding two more and that is what I say to you….weasel.

  29. February 15, 2013 at 5:25 pm

I’m back on Jesse Jackson, Jr. I never cared for him myself, a bit too arrogant for my taste. I am actually not surprised, but having said so, I believe lots of politicians convert campaign funds to personal use. He just didn’t do it right. Just like Blago…politicians are guided by quid pro quo. If you cast your votes according to the people who support your campaign, what’s the difference? He just didn’t do it right and pissed people off in the process. 🙂

Question: Does anyone know what happens to a candidate’s war-chest when he retires or loses a race. Sen. Bayh retired with $11 million. And remember when Sarah Palin used her PAC to take a family vacation? I’m thinking I’m in the wrong business. 🙂

(Reuters) – U.S. securities regulators on Friday filed suit against unknown traders in the options of ketchup maker H.J. Heinz Co , alleging they traded on inside information before the company announced a deal to be acquired for $23 billion by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway and Brazil’s 3G Capital.

The suit, filed in federal court in Manhattan, cites “highly suspicious trading” in Heinz call options just prior to the February 14 announcement of the deal. It claims the traders are either in, or trading through accounts in, Zurich, Switzerland.

One of the things that always bugs me is when I hear about people complaining the President hasn’t done anything for black people, because it speaks to a lazy mind that needs every connection laid out for them. Today’s speech really brought home that the actions the President has taken, and is specifically proposing now, will benefit hard hit and disadvantaged communities like those in the urban, predominantly black areas. From the Stimulus, which supported jobs, unemployment and food assistance – including to those black communities that were hit hardest by recession. Education programs and improving public education and public funding for college improves the educational opportunities for black kids – and I believe there are specific programs that were addressed for predominantly black colleges. The Affordable Care Act had programs specific to black people and the diseases most occurring in black people, and provides subsidies for under-served communities. And when the President outlined his holistic plan today for improving economic situations in targeted communities as a way to improve conditions, but also provide a way for communities to be less vulnerable to gun violence – that helps black families.

Just because a program isn’t titled an “African American Program” doesn’t mean it isn’t targeted to help African American communities. And the Tavis Smiley’s and Company, who can’t pause their Obama-bashing long enough to acknowledge the benefits that black communities have experienced as a result of the President’s policies that are open to the entire country, are either lazy, or willfully misinforming and instigating.

In the 1960’s, so many of us were psychologically invested in MLK and RFK………..then we lost them. our focus and our will.

President Obama has given all us old hippies and flower children a new focus and a new determination. He’s in it for the long haul, sees the bigger picture and inspires us to see the vision.

I’m glad I lived long enough to see this day.
