Rise and Shine

Hey, what other photo would I use on this date?!

****

Today:

9:35: President Obama departs the White House

11:30: Arrives in Decatur, Ga.

12:10: Visits a pre-kindergarten classroom at College Heights Early Childhood Learning Center

1:20: Delivers remarks at Decatur Community Recreation Center

2:40: Departs Decatur

4:25: Arrives at the White House

4:50: Participates in a “Fireside Hangout” with Google+ to discuss his State of the Union Address

More here: Steve Benen

****

Love this:

Michael Tomasky: …. A lot of commentators are amusing themselves by pointing out that very few of Obama’s long list of State of the Union goals are likely to make it into law while he’s in office. I say that seeing as how he’s a pretty smart man, he knows this. But he’s doing it anyway. Because he’s thinking more about history than his story, and because he understands that if he wants to be a transformational president, the change he initiates is going to have to continue well past his time – and yes, the great presidents have all thought this way.

…. Obama knows that fighting climate change and getting universal pre-school and doing something to help the working poor are big jobs, long jobs. They’re certainly not going to happen under the current legislative configuration, and they’re probably not going to happen while he’s in office ….. his play is to inch us toward those goals however he can …. He might not be the guy who’s there to sign the bill. But he’s okay with that, too.

…. If three or four of these things pass in the next four years, great, all the better. But if they pass in the eight years after he’s done, everyone will know who put them in motion. And I have little doubt Obama will be happy to share the credit with the then-sitting president, whoever she may be.

President Obama’s post-SOTU OFA call – thanks a million Pamela!

The sound is pretty low, so turn it up!

****

****

NYT: President Obama’s call in his State of the Union address to “make high-quality preschool available to every single child in America” rallied advocates across the country who have long argued that inequity in education begins at a very young age.

In details that emerged early Thursday, the administration proposed that the federal government work with states to provide preschool for every 4-year-old from low- and moderate-income families. The president’s plan also calls for expanding Early Head Start, the federal program designed to prepare children from low-income families for school, to broaden quality childcare for infants and toddlers.

I’m not an Andrew Sullivan fan, but he has a pretty spectacular take-down of Rubio’s SOTU response if you’d like to read it – here

Oh go on then, more romance:

Congrats on 1st Libra and good morning TOD family. I have just been reading lately….exhausted from working 12 hrs a day. Pays the bills and I do love working. Off until later this afternoon so I have chores to do.

Just wanted to wish Chips and everyone else a very happy Valentines Day! Yes, my husband of almost 30 years brought me a box of chocolates first thing this morning. Who says chocolate is not a breakfast food…Not me!

I always said chocolates are protein. Sweets are fruits & vegetables – depending on the color. lol. First Lady may not agree but I am quite sure I can get Sasha & her friends on my side. 🙂

Marco Rubio’s house in his “working class neighborhood” is on the market for $675,000 so he can move his family to DC. He has a problem with the truth even with facts that are easily refuted.

    • 25 hopefruit2
      February 14, 2013 at 9:18 am

Yup he is a compuslive liar. No way he’s in a working-class neighborhood. Not any where in Florida in 2013.

In the early to mid- 2000’s you could find houses in Brooklyn/ Queens NY in working-class neighborhoods for up to $700-$800K, but these were actually inflated prices and NYC is a special case where real estate is concerned. I’m pretty sure that Marco Rubio would not be residing in any of those neighborhoods.

        February 14, 2013 at 12:47 pm

He’s trying to sell it. Saw a couple realtors pics. Not fancy, but nice. But what middle class family can afford that? I’ve decided I’m a street urchin in the country. You would not believe what we paid for our three houses. I think our kids are way over their heads, but didn’t spend spend more than they can afford. Problem their houses aren’t much bigger than ours. Of course Rob and Joy have patio and deck that is a wide shot look at the beautiful Rocky Mountains. They live in Boulder County. Joy works in Boulder, not far from they’re small town and Robby works in Denver. He walks a block to the bus stop and rides The Ride that takes him to work. About 40 miles, I think. They have a great bus system. I wouldn’t want to drive in that traffic everyday. Well, TMI , but my point is wages haven’t gone up with inflation. I don’t see $9 as a living wage, but I go along with PBO. What people who pay those low wages are counting on is the Federal and State govt. to pay for food stamps and even welfare and the Red Cross for emergencies or their Church so their donations can be tax deduct able and lower their tax rate. There must be 50 ways to leave your lover. Republicans, I’m talking to you. There is one way to leave your lover. Join us in making America the best country a CITIZEN can make it! Open your mind, set yourself free. Wouldn’t you love to soar with the Eagles? The view is beautiful. . . .
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans white with foam,
        God bless america,

I don’t know about that. The commentators can say what the hell they want. It’s hard to predict the future – particularly where PBO is concerned.

    • February 14, 2013 at 9:15 am

Loved the article Hopefruit, as Tomasky said, “the great presidents have all thought this way”, long term – that there are people laughing at the notion that a President would try any reform that wouldn’t personally benefit him says so much about them.

      • 33 hopefruit2
        February 14, 2013 at 9:21 am

Indeed. And I truly think that PBO will continue to be “President” even after he leaves the WH in 2017. In fact he will do his best work for the country OUT of Washington DC.

The media is part of the Republican party, and their goal is to enable the GOP, not encourage Democrats.

Three years ago right around this time – listening to the MSM you would have thought the exact opposite would be the case in 2013.

All O’Reilly is doing is repeating an ancient rightwing talking point that is nowhere close to being true anymore and if any of the pundits at Fox News know this, it’s him. Unlike many of his fellow Fox pundits O’Reilly is actually a journalist by traiining. So, he knows better. He ended up on Fox because his temper got the better of him when he was a correspondent at ABC decades ago. Fox is only one leg up than one of the previous gigs he got after burning bridges in legitimate journalist circles (“Inside Edition.”) It was there where O’Reilly produced his Youtube hit, “Do it Live, F– It!” Several people actually put that to electronic dance music and it sounds pretty good.

He really had no choice after burning so many bridges. You should really look up the tirade he unleashed on-camera during is time there. It was one of of Youtube’s most popular videos when it was first posted (around 2006 or 2007) and it explains why he ended up on a tabloid news show in the first place.

If he hadn’t gone off the deep-end, he would have never ended up on Fox News. He would have still been with networks like ABC, NBC, or CBS.

Please tell me how filibuster reform would speed up the enactment of the President’s agenda. I would be gang ho for a filibuster reform if the House of Rep. was controlled by Democrats and Nancy Pelosi was Speaker. As it stand today the Senate Republicans, except for blocking the President’s nominees, don’t have to rely on a filibuster to block the President’s Agenda. The Republicans in the House of Rep. are taking care of that.

The President should go out on the Road 2 or 3G per week, talking to the People and educating them About what’s going on.
Then, the American public, cone 2014, will be privy to how the Republucans in congress stand in the way for progress.
It’s the only way this will work as the Republicans have made the calcuaktion to just oppose everything. They are actually blowing up everything!

    valentine’s day joke

One Sunday a pastor told the congregation that the church needed some extra money and asked the people to prayerfully consider giving a little extra in the offering plate. He said that whoever gave the most would be able to pick out three hymns.

After the offering plates were passed, the pastor glanced down and noticed that someone had placed a $1,000 bill in offering. He was so excited that he immediately shared his joy with his congregation and said he’d like to personally thank the person who placed the money in the plate. A very quiet, elderly and saintly lady all the way in the back shyly raised her hand. The pastor asked her to come to the front. Slowly she made her way to the pastor. He told her how wonderful it was that she gave so much and in thanksgiving asked her to pick out three hymns.

Her eyes brightened as she looked over the congregation, pointed to the three handsomest men in the building and said, “I’ll take him, him and him.”

Struggling to make ends meet on a first-call salary, the pastor was livid when he confronted his wife with the receipt for a $250 dress she had bought. “How could you do this?!”

“I was outside the store looking at the dress in the window, and then I found myself trying it on,” she explained. “It was like Satan was whispering in my ear, ‘You look fabulous in that dress. Buy it!'”

“Well,” the pastor replied, “You know how I deal with that kind of temptation. I say, ‘Get behind me, Satan!'”

“I did,” replied his wife, “but then he said, ‘It looks fabulous from back here, too!'”

I think the people who say that the president’s ideas from both the Inauguration and the SOTU will not be enacted miss the point. At both times and in his trips across the country the president is not talking to Congress–he knows what they are–he’s talking to us. He’s also campaigning for 2014 and the fact that he will involve himself is choosing candidates and raising money shows exactly that. The most important thing he did in both major speeches was to NAME us, which is one of the most powerful things a leader can do. He named us CITIZENS, not just Dems or Reps or Indies, but all of us. And most importantly, he told us that with citizenship comes responsibility. Once this idea really starts to sink in and especially if we repeat it over and over again, it will begin to make a profound difference in the outlook for our country and it will slowly begin to reverse the destructive self absorption that has corroded this country since Reagan was president. The president is a master reader of the political terrain and he not just going to tread it, he’s going to shape it for a different future.

It’s no accident that the SOTU began with a reference to JFK, because the idea of citizen is another version of “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” In both speeches he’s given us a broad vision that a lot of people loved –67 percent, according to PPP polling–and he basically said that if this is the vision you agree with then you are LIBERAL, which when you think about it is a profoundly radical thing for him to have done. For over forty years, we’ve been told that this is a center right nation, afraid of change, narrow-minded in regards to race, gender and marriage, wedded to a trickle down economic philosophy and rooted in fear of government. President Obama is the most transformational figure that we will see in our lifetimes and he is literally reconfiguring America’s self-image. Whether the minimum wage actually rises in the near future or some other piece of legislation is enacted soon doesn’t matter. All these things and more will happen in the future because the groundwork for transformation is now being laid.

I love this post too jackie. Spot on! I love the fact that the words citizen/citizenship are being used by this President. For my generation, wasn’t it like the 5th grade when you get your first exposure to Civics? (Civics is the study of the theoretical and practical aspects of citizenship, its rights and duties; the duties of citizens to each other as members of a political body and to the government.[1] It includes the study of civil law and civil code, and the study of government with attention to the role of citizens ― as opposed to external factors ― in the operation and oversight of government.[1]- this from Wikipedia)? And now for eons it feels like, no one has talked much about the rights and responsibilities (stress on this second word) of a “citizen” of the United States! I don’t know if our President decided this, or one of his advisors, but I think to use this word over and over now is one of the smartest things he could ever have done! It carries so much meaning!

I really hope that TOD doesn’t become a home for bashing Sen. Harry Reid. Sen. Reid has been a strong supporter of the President. Remember he still has to lead a Democratic caucus in the Senate that has blue dog Democrats and socialist Bernie Sanders.

And, speaking of military, want to share an update about my son-in-law (and daughter.) The therapist has decided the Navy has to disqualify him from subs. They are both okay with that. Howeveer, when finalized, it will decrease their monthly income by $900. They are re-working their budget, going to refinance cars and house. They will adjust but it will be challenging for awhile. He is working w/the detailer for placement after his 6 months of limited duty and first choice is Engineering Duty Officer at a shipyard. IF he gets selected for this, the first stop will be Naval Postgraduate School in CA. Anyone here had experience w/that?

Good morning, all my TOD family – I just received an email from Elizabeth Warren and I wanted to share it with you. There are so many wonderful women on this blog and I want to follow up on Elizabeth’s request to tell all my women friends about this issue. Happy Valentine’s Day to all!

    Hanna,

I’m going to have to put off baking my Valentine’s Day cake until I can get back home on Friday. I have my heart-shaped pans, but the oven is broken in my new Washington apartment. Even so, I’m not letting the day pass without asking everyone for a favor.

My mother was born on Valentine’s Day. From the time she turned fifteen, my father gave her a heart-shaped box of chocolates, and from the time I was nine and bought some heart-shaped pans at the dime store, I baked her a cake. Mother loved the heart connection to her birthday.

Several years ago, the heart connection took on a new meaning. My mother was in good health. She went to the doctor regularly, and, except for some concern about high cholesterol and a few complaints about gas pains and arthritis, she always got a good report. When she had some minor surgery, all the kids and grandkids came to visit. She was doing great, ready to check out of the hospital the next morning. So after a few more turns racing her up and down the hallway in wheelchairs, we all headed home.

In the middle of the night, one of my brothers called. He said Mama was dead. I couldn’t believe it. I thought he had made some kind of terrible mistake. He said Daddy had been sitting with her when she leaned forward and said, “Don, there’s that gas pain again.” Then she died.

The autopsy showed that she had advanced heart disease. No one had any inkling.

This year more women than men will die from heart disease. In fact, every minute, a woman dies from heart disease. And the symptoms for women aren’t always the same as for men. As I learned when the doctor called to explain how she died, heart disease can easily be overlooked for women.

So enjoy Valentine’s Day and all the hearts, but here’s my ask: Today please ask a woman you love to learn more about heart disease. Learn the symptoms. Learn the risks. Learn prevention. Please don’t wait.

Tomorrow I’ll bake a cake. I’ll open up the box that has some of the old valentines my daddy gave to my mother. And I’ll ask the women I love to take better care of themselves.

    Happy Valentine’s Day!

    Elizabeth

P.S. I’m wearing red for heart awareness to my first Senate Banking Committee hearing this morning. I’m excited to get to work leveling the playing field for working families. Thank you for being a part of this.

Hey y’all! Very cool, Chipsticks, that tape of the call actually worked (apologies for the tap tap tap of my typing), thrilled to see it on the morning post! (TY also for editing out the last bit, I got confused by that point!) 🙂

My cousin’s daughter is married to a man who works for the administration so they live in DC area and have a new baby (Theo). She (the daughter) posted this on FB the other day and (hides head in shame) I forgot to share it with my friends at TOD. So, consider this a Valentine’s Day gift.

“Ran into Malia Obama yesterday at the Barnes and Noble in Bethesda! And she held the door for me and said Theo was cute! Unfortunately between being starstruck and embarrassed by the crying baby, the best I could do was “thanks”. But it was still awesome. She was with a big group doing some kind of scavenger hunt. She is very pretty in person and very tall – and more gracious than any kid her age has a right to be. Still in awe!”

Happy Valentines Day everyone. Chips, thank you for posting Andrew Sullivan’s blog entry. I do like Andrew Sullivan, though there have been some things he has said that I take umbrage with. I guess the main reason I like him (other than the fact that his writing is very good) is that he saw through Sarah Palin right away and did many, many posts about her. I also like his posts about the Catholic Church; he is Catholic, one with his eyes open to the failings of the Catholic Church in these times. He has sometimes done some very poignant posts about it. I am not Catholic but I used to entertain romantic thoughts about being a Catholic. Anyway, thanks and this is a very good Rise and Shine this morning!

DaisyDem – I love Andrew’s column today too – and I will tweet him to thank him. I always try to ignore the bad and gush on the good – that’s how I raised my two boys 😉

Reports are that there had been prior incidents of domestic violence associated with Pistorius.. And the fact that the girlfriend was shot 4 times…not good at all.

Tragic—-just read this lengthy NYT story about him written pre-Olympics—-linked from twitter. Included was a tidbit about him taking the reporter to a gun range, saying he liked to go there to shoot when he couldn’t sleep. Guns again.

Isn’t Pistorius claiming that he thought she was an intruder? Hope it doesn’t turn out that he killed her on purpose.

          February 14, 2013 at 11:33 am

The “intruder” defense seems weak, and why would he shoot her 4 times! After the 1st shot she would have screamed, or at least fallen to the floor. Also, as someone on Twitter noted:

        My gut feelings exactly, HF.

Then the fact that this Courtship started just last Autumn? Hmm 😯

It doesn’t make One Iota sense.

Where did he live? I don’t remember from the Olympics. He was raised in South Africa, I think.

The Andrew Sullivan piece is excellent and it takes a lot for me to click on Sullivan’s manic utterances.

“More government isn’t going to help you get ahead. It’s going to hold you back. More government isn’t going to create more opportunities. It’s going to limit them. And more government isn’t going to inspire new ideas, new businesses and new private sector jobs”

So sayeth Marco Rubio. So can we assume that he intends to eliminate all corporate welfare? The tax breaks, the roads and infrastructure they use without paying their fair share of taxes? the carve-outs, the lobbyists….. the list is endless.
