Good Evening Chips & TODer’s, just finished watching Lord of the Dance. . His set designs were pretty awesome. The performance was in Dublin, Ireland. Love the dancing. Needed some uplift after listening t those clowns in the Senate.

Hi 99ts! Chips used to wait for me to arrive and about to comment in order to move immediately to a new post, so I’m encouraged to now see that she tries to spread that last place honour around. Such a thoughtful approach, I now think!

Thanks, Chips. wifey unit and daughter unit left for my other home y’day after a two day whirlwind temple tour. 😦

Daughter stood 68th at the national level entrance exam (over 20,000 appeared) in the post graduate medicine entrance exam but still not good enough to get a seat. You have to be in top 20 get a seat. Sigh…

I am seriously thinking of sending her abroad for her post graduate studies – UK/US/New Zealand/Australia/Singapore. This heart break is not worth it.

        • February 14, 2013 at 10:38 pm

68 out of 20,000??? And still not good enough to ‘get a seat’? What?!

          Sounds completely bizarre, Amk.

You know where she needs to go? Ireland, of course.

          eg http://www.rcsi.ie/

I’ll link her up with my Ma – and cat, hopefully.

LOL. I am afraid she’ll paint her hair green.

Yes, it’s a very tough competition in India to get into post graduate medicine. Too few seats, Too many students competing. Her only consolation – she was the topper from her college.

She loves cats and generally all animals. Now she has got pet pigeons, squirrels and crows that feeds them faithfully every day at our balcony. They get better treatment from her than me. Mebbe your mum can teach her a thing or two. 🙂

            • February 14, 2013 at 11:02 pm

Your daughter is obviously highly qualified, amk. Reality is that competition for medical school is fierce in the US. Moreover, Med Schools want their graduates to stay in the US and practice medicine here. That would be a real hardship for you as a family.

Yeah, I know. That’s a bummer against US. But then the quality of teaching is excellent. Decisions, decisions, decisions.

University of Chicago is always looking for good students. My Doc is always got an intern in tow every time I go for an office visit. Everyone of ’em is here on a visa. Plus my Doc teaches in China twice a year. She even uses my body to ascertain some of their er, ah skills.

Thanks ya. I’ll take a look UoC. She definitely wants to come back to India to practice. (Some quaint notion about serving her people. ) So if the US univs require a compulsory service after graduation for foreign students who come there on their own dime, that’ll be a no-no for her.

Thanks sailor. I’ll definitely yell for help if she ever gets in there. At present my preference ranking is Singapore (closest to home)/New Zealand (my UK niece did a month internship there recently and totally loved it)/Australia/UK/US.

AMK, also consider UC San Diego, which is top notch. Besides, you can’t beat the weather in San Diego. Best in the U.S. She will save on clothing.

So tell me guys, how can they take a 10 fucking day break from “work”? How many days does congress work a year anyway?

    • February 14, 2013 at 10:51 pm

I have no idea how they can do any of what we witnessed today, Carla – or any of what we’ve witnessed the GOP do for decades as they have done incalculable harm to America and killed vast numbers of people who were never our enemy (all the while not going after the ones who clearly were/are our enemy).

What Senators and Reps call ‘work’ I call a vacation interrupted occasionally by bursts of show and even less frequent acts of governance.

Report from the heating up of dinner: Damn, it smells good.

AMK, may I humbly recommend UCLA Medical School for your daughter unit? Top rate school, lots of foreign students, and L.A. is festooned with good Indian cuisine so that she won’t get too homesick.

    • February 14, 2013 at 10:51 pm

Oi, lots of fab Indian cuisine in Dublin – and the weather’s waaaaaaaay nicer than LA. Ish. 😕

Thanks LL. That’s one of the colleges already in my wish list. She is a eggtarian (what one can’t be ?) and would be lost in the absence of Indian food.

And Chips – Dublin is frigging cold in 15 out 12 months, ain’t it ?

      • February 14, 2013 at 11:02 pm

🙄 Chilly, that’s all. And there are alternatives to Californian wine muck in Dublin, like stuff from Luxembourg and Scotland and the like. Back off LL, Amk’s girl is Ireland-bound.

UCLA definitely AMK! All of their graduate programs are top notch. I went to law school at UCLA (yes I’ve scrolled by your absolutely HEINOUS lawyer jokes with a stiff upper lip 😆 😆 Just kidding, there are only a handful of other attorneys I can say that I’m truly fond of). I also dated a med student in the program there back in the day. The campus is even more gorgeous now then when I attended many moons ago; with a highly diverse student population. And as LL noted, Indian cuisine is quite good here in the Southland, along with other tasty cuisines for her to experiment with. And the Cali TOD Gang too??? BONUS!! 🙂 Seriously, she should consider it.

If good Indian food is a criteria for acceptance, then your only options will be London or Singapore.

        February 15, 2013 at 2:11 am

UCLA is definitely top rate. But I think your daughter would be much happier at UCSD, another top rate medical school in the UC system. San Diego is much cleaner and less congested than LA. We also have excellent indian restaurants. I bet you if you and your daughter visited LA and San Diego, She would chose San Diego, better known as America’s finest city.

cman, why not send a email to Senator Harry Reid. I have sent a email to ABC, and CNN, I plan to send one to CBS and NBC too say what I have to say about the Senate Republicans. What they did today was a disgrace and if they think this will improve people’s opinion of them they are seriously wrong.

Children hugging this Pres generally seem so relaxed, in a different way than the adults I think. I cannot think of an awkward response to a hug coming from a child, although I have seem a few ‘skeptical’ , or potential eye roll looks.

Remember when you would see Mitt Romney with kids, the kids act like they were scared of Mitt, and Mitt act like he didn’t care to be touching those kids. And do anyone remember seeing any interaction between Ann Romney and kids. In the pictures you see with President Obama and kids it seem so real, like he care about the kids. Same with First Lady Michelle and kids.

Well, Annieb, I daresay pics of Pres O with kids seem real because they are – he does care about the children and he’s not shy to show it and they are not shy to accept it.

This may be weird. And please give me you-know-what as you please. We (my wife and I) are supporters ($$$$ and some time) and close to our Dem US representatives and senators. Udall, Heinrich, Lujan-Grisham and Lujan. They are all, decent, extremely hard-working, conscientious, diligent and concerned people. Are there shiftless, greedy, disgusting people in Congress? OH YEAH. But I REALLY BELIEVE there are many idealistic, skilled, accomplished and honest Americans in congress that have sacrificed a lot for our democratic system. I know the people I cited from NM. The pressures of office are UN-F*CKING BELIEVABLE. The schedule, the demands and pleas from constituents, travle back and forth, incredible expense of living in D.C., crapasslobbyist. For me there are even some moderate refuggs that are also good people that we often just disagree with. Our real politics are…..put nicely….. fucking GD tough. The campaigns and fund raising are so friggin hard. Do YOU want to do it? Hey, DO IT!!! OMG, I can’t imagine…

    • 89 99ts
      February 14, 2013 at 11:44 pm

I think it’s the continual fundraising & elections – in my world the house is elected every 3 years (almost got 4 years) and elections are government funded. There is some, but little – fundraising. A “run of the mill” person does not need to fundraise.

Thus said – there are so many times I have written to my member and received NO response. They send out a newsletter once/twice a year and that is it. When I have a complaint, I write to ministers (politically in charge of an admin department) and/or the head honcho. They are part of the party in power and always answer – at times I have had a process changed because of my complaint – but via my local member – nothing.

I am sure some are very hardworking – I know that some others – do little, if anything.

    • February 14, 2013 at 11:58 pm

We really need to get “money” out of our political process and that is the only way we can get “good” people to stay and the “greedy-lazy” to leave. Take the profit out of being in politics and you get the people who truly want to serve.
