Today, Senate Democrats offered a balanced plan to avoid across the board budget cuts that will hurt kids, seniors, and our men and women in uniform. The plan includes spending cuts that wonāt harm middle class families while closing tax loopholes that benefit the wealthiest.
Now, Republicans in Congress face a simple choice. Do they protect investments in education, health care and national defense or do they continue to prioritize and protect tax loopholes that benefit the very few at the expense of middle and working class Americans?
The American people overwhelmingly support the approach Senate Democrats are taking, especially the āBuffett Rule.ā They support it because itās simply unacceptable that the very wealthiest Americans can pay less in taxes as a share of their income than their secretaries and other middle class workers like teachers, cops and firefighters.
We hope that Congressional Republicans back off their insistence of putting the entire burden of reducing the deficit on the backs of the middle class and seniors because, as the President said on Tuesday, the true economic engine in this country is a thriving and rising middle class. One thing I was glad that President Obama did during the hangout was explain his duties as President (to the lady with the immigration question). Many seem to think that his authority is more far reaching than it is and that he can solve everything by issuing an executive order. As he said, his role is not to legislate but to administer the laws that exist. EO’s can only go so far and he had pretty much exhausted what he can do with regards to immigration. Now it’s time for Congress to do their job.
I think part of the reason people have misconceptions about the powers of the President because you have people like Boehner wanting the President to do his job, and no one –MSM — challeging him.

haha—–I believe that is really true in the Obama household—-if Momma’s happy, everybody’s happy.” Sounds like President Obama has learned that important lesson well.
That should be the motto in every household, because if we were to be honest when it comes to the household Mom is the one who has to do just about everything. Okay I realize it’s not the case 100% of the time but most of the time. If Mom is healthy, happy, then she can do all she can to make Daddy and kids healthy and happy.

This is what we have said all along about John McCain, that he’s a bitter old fool. It seem all the Republicans are like that, what ashame. They will put their revenge over the welfare of the country.
What people haven’t forgotten is what a narrow-minded, cranky, unAmerican ass John McCain is. May all his ugly revenge come back and haunt him a thousand fold. In making this statement John McCain just announced publicly that is goal is not to serve his country, but to flatter his own ego.
Because I think we all need a little bit of serenity…
Grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
the Courage to change the things I cannot accept, and
the Wisdom to hide the bodies of those people I had to kill today because they pissed me off.
And also, help me to be careful of the toes I step on today
as they be connected to the ass that I may have to kiss tomorrow.
Help me to always give 100% at work
12% on Monday.
23% on Tuesday.
40% on Wednesday.
20% on Thursday.
5% on Friday.
And help me to remember…
When I’m having a really bad day,
and it seems that people are trying to piss me off,
that it takes 42 muscles to frown and only 4…
to extend my middle finger and tell them to bite me!
Amen.
The GOP civil war is truly a sight to behold; but I hate how they’re unified by blocking the only person who CAN see the forest for the trees, who is truly shaping this generation in his “fair and caring” mold just as Reagan did to a much greedier (think Gordon Gekko) generation 30 years ago.
A patron and I just agreed: NBA season is way too freaking long. 30 teams, should play each other 2 times a year, home and away. That would be a schedule of 58 games. You could play two games a week, which would be a 29 week season. That would cut down on injuries and on games which really aren’t that interesting.
(This is what happens when the reference desk isn’t busy.)
Agree with you 100% LL. I always said the NBA season is about 20 games too long. I am enjoying watching the Heat vs. the Thunder right now as 2 of the NBA best go up against each other in James and Durant.
But the league loses interest among the general public every year. Right now, Major League Soccer is the third most attended sports league in the country, based on average attendanceāover the NBA and NHL. I’ve pretty much stopped watching games because a) Dish Network doesn’t carry Time Warner Sports, so I can’t watch most Laker games (yes, I know, I have other means of getting the games, but, really, with the way they’re playing they’re not worth the bother this season), and b) a 48 minute game shouldn’t take 2 to 2 and a half hours of real time to play.
Why Republicans Can No Longer Be Trusted on National Security
Because their leaders have become shallow, ignorant, and totally unserious on the issue that matters most.
True we adore POTUS & FLOTUS. But I also suspect that this photo in particular holds a special meaning for you because it was taken in Kenya. I have passed through and spent some time in the place PBO’s father was born, raised and is buried and this scene looks very familiar. Makes me feel very home sick because the look of this background is not much different from my parent’s home and many villages where I spent so much carefree days
I had no idea…this was taken in Kenya…Wow! thanks for the info….Globaldcitizenlinda:-) Even though my family is in Italy..I would love to go home and visit.. nothing like the motherland:-)
I remember you mentioning your connection to the Motherland a long time back – that is why I assumed that you knew the history of this photo.
I could be wrong but I seem to have the information about the location of the photo in my huge menta l “All Things Obama File”.
If I recall correctly, this was taken during the first trip that Mrs Michelle Obama took to Kenya to meet PBO’s family – before the kids were born. Photo was taken either in Kisumu or in one of the ourtskirts of Nairobi.
It is one of the photos included in “Dreams From My Father”
What is wrong with us…..or…….them? I say us because I believe that we are our brother and sister keepers. We need to start thinking of this entire country as one family and maybe we’ll stop hurting each other and start helping each other.
FULL DISCLOSURE = A reminder that you all know Iām techie-challenged. In other words, donāt laugh at me. Share a sane, helpful answer please. Thanks.
Assuming you have Windows, have you ever been called by the technical support to say that your system needs attention? They seem to have my name, phone number (obviously) and address. They solicit access to the computer to supposedly clean up malware and they sound somewhat convincing ā at least to me. Anyway, late last year they ācleaned upā my desktop after I gave in to their persistent calls, fearing that I might be messing up the system for others if I let the malware that was āfoundā in my desktop persist. In the end it cost me $209.99, supposedly for lasting protection.
HOW-EVAH! For the past 2-3 weeks the āWindows technical support departmentā has been phoning me again because there are problems in my system, yada, yada, yada. (apparently in my laptop). Thing is, itās not yet a year since they collected my $200+ and the guy I spoke to kept saying that my payment must have been for virus protection which they donāt do and which I wonāt need once they have cleaned up my system. He rattled on for almost an hour and wouldn’t let me hang up, until I insisted if i didn’t go and eat it would precipitate my migraine (truth). Even then he promised to call back in 15 minutes and kept calling when I didn’t answer. No doubt he’ll call back tomorrow. Just the thought of it is starting to get me mad again. Anyway, is there really a part of the tech department that phones and bugs people?
VP – this is a scam – I don’t believe they harm your computer – but they do nothing of use. When I abused them for calling – I got a call EVERY 2 HOURs in retaliation. I now hang up. Friend of mine paid them $AU300 – and let them into his computer – he wouldn’t believe me when I said it was a hoax – until they called again 4 weeks later – asking him to “join up”. Seems to be a world wide group .
The cleanups they do you can easily do yourself & they don’t help for long. The main reason computers run slow – I believe are threefold
1. not enough memory – upgrade it if you can
2. Virus programs – nortons & macafee seem to have added slow and slower to my machines in the past. With windows 7 I use the microsoft supplied virus system – no problems at all
3. Windows updating – makes the operating system bigger and bigger – hence the need for more memory.
Find a local PC shop – or one of the “come to your home” techies if you want useful help/advice. Fortunately my husband is my techie – but one of my cousins (widow) has found a wonderful local guy to sort her problems.
I should add – in my world they do seem authentic – they set up a web site that you can visit – find a phone number – and call them back to verify. My friend was so convinced – wanted me to join.
Sigh! Amk, when are you going to accept that the advice you share here is meant to come from the GOODness of your heart? š It pains my heart that you are still trying to CAPITALize upon your services here, when we have never for one moment thought to charge you for listening to your …..jokes. Are you implying that after all this time OUR GOODness example is never going to trickle down to you? šÆ
Hi, CB. The first payment was in October last year so I’d think I’m no longer able to cancel it. Also, I’m willing to swallow this as payment for my gullibility (though I hate being a statistic š ).
Funny thing is I was so uneasy at the time, that I called the visa company shortly after the approval of payment was received, thinking they may have made more than one withdrawal. That wasn’t the case so I told myself they must have been legit.
Ah me! It pains to know I was taken in. I can survive (and have survived) the loss of the money but my self-esteem has taken a blow. Little do they know that if they hadn’t approached me so soon they might have gotten away with it a 2nd time – although I’m not sure it’s the same people as the company has a different name, and the voices are different.
I’m going over to the next thread, or on twitter – to wash my mind. Thanks, one and all!
I was very wary the first time, but their persistence and several little things they said made me take a chance. When they only deducted the one amount from my visa, I felt they must have been legit, and was only suspicious this time because it wasn’t yet a year since the previous time, so obviously their whatever hadn’t worked. I let them into the system again, and they might have gotten away with it again just by wearing me down, if it wasn’t for the fact that I really needed to go and eat AND they seemed to have no record of my last payment. They did give me a name, employer ID # and phone number to check but I just wasn’t in the mood today – that’s why I was so grumpy when I signed on earlier today.
Amk, I do not have caller ID and I am not a convincing liar, so I won’t try that one. I really would report them if I had it tho and if their number showed. Anyway, they were so persistent that I’m sure I’ll be hearing from them again. I’ll sleep on what I’ll say to them tomorrow. Does anyone know if the fact that they accessed my computer today means they can cause damage if I don’t respond the way they want tomorrow? IOW, can they access it again tomorrow without my help?
vc – fortunately it was not an expensive scam – as I said they are “legitimate scammers” – hahaha – but they only take cash you authorize. They are also stupid to keep calling the same people – because the word of the scam then spreads – my friend would not believe anyone – until they asked him for more money – he got really upset with me for suggesting it may not be valid.
I’m sorry I can’t help with the microsoft virus thing – are you on Windows 7 or later? I’m not sure it works before then – and as amk says it is automatic with a valid windows.
No, they can’t damage your ‘puter unless you give them remote access. Just download the programs I mentioned above and run them all one after another. That should clean up your ‘puter for good.
I did give them remote access this morning, but it was taking too much time so I cut it off to go and eat. What I’m wondering is if my cutting them off, cut off their access fully, or could they continue from where I left off without my help?
Also, the last time I tried to clean up cookies (an idea I got from you), I lost info I didn’t know how to save prior to the cookie eating, so now I’m afraid to try anything on my own. This computer business is way too much for the likes of me, who has no interest in them other than to turn them on to see what TODville is up to and to type an odd letter or tweet or two.
I hear you, and will check out the caller ID. Maybe tomorrow if i remember to call the telephone company. Of course, it’s just as easy for them to block their numbers if they know they are in a nefarious business.
VC, if they keep calling and won’t take no for an answer, if I may offer a simple, perhaps obnoxious (but successful) last resort suggestion. Buy a whistle. Keep it by the phone. Next time they call, ask them politely to please stop calling, no longer interested in their services, add a note to their records to stop calling you, or else they are going to be on the receiving end of this every time they call. Then blow the whistle as loud as you can into your phone’s receiver. I used this with a couple of very aggressive telemarketers (before the Do Not Call list went into effect) from a credit card company trying to hawk credit card protection insurance and a wholly host of other things, a timeshare company who just would not take no for an answer, even after repeated requests to stop calling and hanging up on them. After a couple of times of issuing a warning to stop calling and blowing the whistle, they got the message and stopped calling.
We have GOT to keep her in the Senate to help the everyday people. I would love to see her one day be President or in a Presidential administration but she could be the “NEW” Lion of the Senate to take over for Ted Kennedy.
It’s nice that POTUS and FLOTUS were able to go out to celebrate Valentine’s Day and the cameras weren’t all in their face. Hope they had a wonderful dinner.
Hello night folks – I just logged on to the sad news about GOP filibuster – all I am wondering is when John McCain will vote against someone who said mean things about Sarah Palin. What a waste of space that man is. I could say worse – but as President Obama always abstains from the nasty – I will try and follow his example
It’s hard sometimes to abstain from being nasty, I have never seen a bunch of Republicans like these. They are nasty, disrespectful, racists, liars, and it doesn’t bother them one bit.
Oh Bob – it is more than SICK – in every possible way – McCain is seriously sick – and heading for Alzheimer’s, dementia or insanity. There is no-one, in the world, who truly believes in those WMD that took the US, UK and many others into the war in Iraq. Tony Blair also, too, should not be allowed on the world stage – tine he spent the rest of his years on the ranch with GWB
OT: Watching The Colbert Report and some old guy who worked for .85 cents an hour during the 1940’s or 50’s making minimum wage as a teen and glad to have it….I NEVER worked minimum wage in 1974 when I graduated from high school. Minimum wage was less than $2 hr and I made anywhere from $5 to $7 back then working part time until I graduated from college. When I was a teen working in the summer is the only time I made minimum wage.
So, finally, a happy Valentine’s Day to my beloved TOD family. Missus and I are having a dinner ordered from Bristol Farmsāa local chichi supermarket. She’s having the salmon and I’m having the filet mignon, both in pastries. I’m about to go heat the oven so that we can get this show rolling.
Hello LL – hope all is going well with your wife’s prep. I wanted to mention from a few days ago – I spent most of my life having bad reactions to anesthetics – then in the past 3 years I had 2 ops – one minor, one not so minor & both times I came out of it feeling almost better than I went in – no issues whatsoever. A good anesthetist can work miracles & the two I had assured me it is only getting better.
I am – 1.46PM (Qld time) – 29C – I became interested in learning about Barack Obama when my world said a black man would NEVER be elected twice. Eventually found Chips & just love the good news she spreads around the world
hadn’t seen it – thanks LP – I have some friends who lived in an area where the Kangaroos came right up to the front door. My friend wasn’t so keen because one of them came in the door one evening – they can be very large!

Yea….. this is interesting. Definitely not the Harlem Shake I’m used too. So they just totally jack our stuff and switch it up and act like it’s brand new.
I’m sure TOD veterans have seen them all
Lovely pictures of POTUS and FLOTUS.
Nice pictures.
GB,
Thanks for posting Cousin Henry’s inauguration pic this morning (see downthread)!
No problem. It was a great pic.

Pretty awesome, jovie!!
LOL. Now you tell us how you reeeally feel about lindsey, jovie.
Today was frustrating but the GOP is digging their hole deeper. Hagel will be confirmed.
both of these. Both are perfect!
any idjit can see that surely?
For who can DVR Rachel Maddow tonight (before your special Valentine’s Day events), this Nobel economist will be on her show tonight at 9 pm EST:
That valentine’s day clip was hilarious. A Presidential executive order to make the hubby to give you a present ?
wimmin are mean.
GoBrooklyn posted this early (west coast time) this morning, but repetition can’t hurt, since it’s such a great picture of everyone:
They’ve gone far, these two! What a lovely picture.
As to today’s Republican stupidity:
Pfeiffer is referring to this interview:
I guess I must have missed all this – why does this not surprise me though about McCain? loser
This is what we have said all along about John McCain, that he’s a bitter old fool. It seem all the Republicans are like that, what ashame. They will put their revenge over the welfare of the country.
AB. the welfare of the country is a foreign as idea to them as decency. They don’t know what either of them means.
That is just mean. McCain is mean. McCain is a mean old, old, old man!
Long live Saint Bush……..NOT!
What people haven’t forgotten is what a narrow-minded, cranky, unAmerican ass John McCain is. May all his ugly revenge come back and haunt him a thousand fold. In making this statement John McCain just announced publicly that is goal is not to serve his country, but to flatter his own ego.
I’m so angry, I could spit.
McCain’s goal is not to serve
Sounds like how I felt when I first heard of his comment, JG
Another one Alycee.

I had that first one posted on my office door at work for years! Thanks for the memories, LL.
LOL. Amen indeed.

Courting the Twenty-Somethings
In many ways, the president steered his party toward issues that matter to that growing generation.
http://www.nationaljournal.com/columns/political-connections/courting-the-twenty-somethings-20130214
Meanwhile, Arapaho, the GOP is steering its party toward a coalition of the old and stupid.
And expanding on the GOP non-strategic gamesmanship (doesn’t take a genius to figure this out):

But wait a minute, we are seeing a new Republican Party, aren’t we?
Are our emmessem lurning finally?
Don’t get your hopes up!
I KNOW.
He interviewed Ted Nutgun after SOYU.
I agree, but the owners want the revenues from the gate and teevee.
Cool
Can the Tweeters spread this around please? Thanks…send this to Congress, too.
Thank you df!

Why Republicans Can No Longer Be Trusted on National Security
Because their leaders have become shallow, ignorant, and totally unserious on the issue that matters most.
Thanks, amk!
Cutest Couple ever:-):-)
Hey Amk, what do you think of this?
Sounds bogus to me, vc…I am the same place you are on the “tech spectrum” but this sounds weird to me. amk??
No. That’s a spam going on of late. Don’t fall for it. And never ever allow them to ‘remotely’ access your computer.
Next time, when he calls, tell him you have got caller id and you’re contacting the police for on-line harassment.
Yup. These are enough to keep your ‘puter safe. It’s been more than 5 years since I spent money stupidly on anti-virus programs.
My way
1. Microsoft security essentials (free if your OS is genuine) – Run everyday once automatically
2. CCleaner – free (run every hour automatically)
3. Spybot Search & Destroy – free (run twice a week)
4. Spyware Blaster – free (run twice a week)
5. MRU-Blaster – free (run every hour)
Thanks for the advise to 99, amk. I tried 1. and ended up unable to access the Windows Security Center. Any idea what’s up with that?
Try this linky

Thank you so very much, Amk!! Have bookmarked linky and downloaded. Here’s hopin! I owe you BIG TIME!!
That’ll be 1,000 bucks, please. Just email it to me.
Oops! I’m a little short this week, but I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday……….Or I could fork over my first born?
first born will just be fine.
Human trafficking! Human trafficking! PBOoooo! PBOooo, over here!
Sigh! Amk, when are you going to accept that the advice you share here is meant to come from the GOODness of your heart? š It pains my heart that you are still trying to CAPITALize upon your services here, when we have never for one moment thought to charge you for listening to your …..jokes. Are you implying that after all this time OUR GOODness example is never going to trickle down to you? šÆ
watch it, I’ll start charging for my crappy jokes too.
I’m shocked, shocked! šÆ
this is a scam…..do cancel with your mastercard or visa
Thanks guys. So I’ve been scammed once! Grrr!
I am not a convincing liar
wimmin/smh
If you are talking about CCleaner, then go to Options/Cookies and then move the cookies from left to the right the ones you want to keep.
It can’t be simpler than that.
Also. Too. Never EVER allow anyone to access your computer remotely. However sweet or genuine they sound.
Also. Too. Too. Get a caller id, use the technology that is available, dammit.
Now there’s a backup plan worth considering, especially since iI do have a whistle from my coaching days and know exactly where it is. Ty, PS.
You’re welcome. Good luck VC
We have GOT to keep her in the Senate to help the everyday people. I would love to see her one day be President or in a Presidential administration but she could be the “NEW” Lion of the Senate to take over for Ted Kennedy.
Wow! I bet they had a blast!
This will be something to see.
Yep!
Aye Lootenant!
Enjoy the dinners. š
Hey 99ts been busy read your post yesterday, glad David Plouffe tweet didnt upset. I felt bad.
No on on lp – I posted in 2 different places – I thought David Plouffe (sp?) could have avoided the link – was not upset with your at all
ahh – that should be No No No (really – my typing online is as bad as my texting!)
Your from Australia right?
I am – 1.46PM (Qld time) – 29C – I became interested in learning about Barack Obama when my world said a black man would NEVER be elected twice. Eventually found Chips & just love the good news she spreads around the world
Spectacularly fantastic, thank you LP!!!!
Pretty epic isnt it Chipsticks? Only in Australia!!! Here in the U.S. if a damn squirrel runs on a field, all hell breaks loose………..
I saw this pic earlier on a sports program and thought about you.
hadn’t seen it – thanks LP – I have some friends who lived in an area where the Kangaroos came right up to the front door. My friend wasn’t so keen because one of them came in the door one evening – they can be very large!
let the record show that I really, really, really, ……. really despise these republicans.
I hope PBO just ignores them until they can knock themselves out and vote for Sen Hagel for DOD Sec.
