    Here’s the full statement:

Today, Senate Democrats offered a balanced plan to avoid across the board budget cuts that will hurt kids, seniors, and our men and women in uniform. The plan includes spending cuts that won’t harm middle class families while closing tax loopholes that benefit the wealthiest.

Now, Republicans in Congress face a simple choice. Do they protect investments in education, health care and national defense or do they continue to prioritize and protect tax loopholes that benefit the very few at the expense of middle and working class Americans?

The American people overwhelmingly support the approach Senate Democrats are taking, especially the ā€œBuffett Rule.ā€ They support it because it’s simply unacceptable that the very wealthiest Americans can pay less in taxes as a share of their income than their secretaries and other middle class workers like teachers, cops and firefighters.

We hope that Congressional Republicans back off their insistence of putting the entire burden of reducing the deficit on the backs of the middle class and seniors because, as the President said on Tuesday, the true economic engine in this country is a thriving and rising middle class. That’s how we build a strong middle class and a strong America.

He is so friendly. You know those nutty GOP’ers are not going to get to my President….my Vice-President either, for that matter. I believe that Obama and Biden both know that they will have their way and prevail over the naysayers and undercutters.

    • February 14, 2013 at 6:52 pm

I would have embarrassed myself and shouted “I love you” just to hear him say “I love you back”.

      I kid but not really.

      • February 14, 2013 at 9:47 pm

gobrooklyn – I think the fact that they were all waving and saying “bye” repeatedly means that they wanted to keep that conversation going forever, and maybe some of them (even the right wing plants) were secretly whispering “I love you, Mr.President” in their minds… That’s what I saw. The ending was actually very sweet!

One thing I was glad that President Obama did during the hangout was explain his duties as President (to the lady with the immigration question). Many seem to think that his authority is more far reaching than it is and that he can solve everything by issuing an executive order. As he said, his role is not to legislate but to administer the laws that exist. EO’s can only go so far and he had pretty much exhausted what he can do with regards to immigration. Now it’s time for Congress to do their job.

I think part of the reason people have misconceptions about the powers of the President because you have people like Boehner wanting the President to do his job, and no one –MSM — challeging him.

I know there’s justifiable outrage about the filibuster today. This could have been avoided if Harry Reid and the jackass Dem Senators would have done something. They aren’t up to real governance. That said, Hagel will be confirmed when the Rs have their tantrum first. They can go home and tell their tea bagger taskmasters they did the filibuster, so now they an avoid getting primaries. Then come back and allow enough R senators to vote for cloture to get an up or down vote.

That should be the motto in every household, because if we were to be honest when it comes to the household Mom is the one who has to do just about everything. Okay I realize it’s not the case 100% of the time but most of the time. If Mom is healthy, happy, then she can do all she can to make Daddy and kids healthy and happy.

Because I think we all need a little bit of serenity…

Grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
the Courage to change the things I cannot accept, and
the Wisdom to hide the bodies of those people I had to kill today because they pissed me off.

And also, help me to be careful of the toes I step on today
as they be connected to the ass that I may have to kiss tomorrow.

Help me to always give 100% at work
    12% on Monday.
    23% on Tuesday.
    40% on Wednesday.
    20% on Thursday.
    5% on Friday.

    And help me to remember…
When I’m having a really bad day,
and it seems that people are trying to piss me off,
that it takes 42 muscles to frown and only 4…
to extend my middle finger and tell them to bite me!
    Amen.

Similar theme to NYT’s article earlier this week about Montana college students.

In many ways, the president steered his party toward issues that matter to that growing generation.

The GOP civil war is truly a sight to behold; but I hate how they’re unified by blocking the only person who CAN see the forest for the trees, who is truly shaping this generation in his “fair and caring” mold just as Reagan did to a much greedier (think Gordon Gekko) generation 30 years ago.

A patron and I just agreed: NBA season is way too freaking long. 30 teams, should play each other 2 times a year, home and away. That would be a schedule of 58 games. You could play two games a week, which would be a 29 week season. That would cut down on injuries and on games which really aren’t that interesting.

(This is what happens when the reference desk isn’t busy.)

Agree with you 100% LL. I always said the NBA season is about 20 games too long. I am enjoying watching the Heat vs. the Thunder right now as 2 of the NBA best go up against each other in James and Durant.

      • February 14, 2013 at 10:16 pm

But the league loses interest among the general public every year. Right now, Major League Soccer is the third most attended sports league in the country, based on average attendance—over the NBA and NHL. I’ve pretty much stopped watching games because a) Dish Network doesn’t carry Time Warner Sports, so I can’t watch most Laker games (yes, I know, I have other means of getting the games, but, really, with the way they’re playing they’re not worth the bother this season), and b) a 48 minute game shouldn’t take 2 to 2 and a half hours of real time to play.

True we adore POTUS & FLOTUS. But I also suspect that this photo in particular holds a special meaning for you because it was taken in Kenya. I have passed through and spent some time in the place PBO’s father was born, raised and is buried and this scene looks very familiar. I could be wrong but I seem to have the information about the location of the photo in my huge menta l “All Things Obama File”.

If I recall correctly, this was taken during the first trip that Mrs Michelle Obama took to Kenya to meet PBO’s family – before the kids were born. Photo was taken either in Kisumu or in one of the ourtskirts of Nairobi.

It is one of the photos included in “Dreams From My Father”

Hey Amk, what do you think of this?

FULL DISCLOSURE = A reminder that you all know I’m techie-challenged. In other words, don’t laugh at me. Share a sane, helpful answer please. Thanks.

Assuming you have Windows, have you ever been called by the technical support to say that your system needs attention? They seem to have my name, phone number (obviously) and address. They solicit access to the computer to supposedly clean up malware and they sound somewhat convincing – at least to me. Anyway, late last year they ā€˜cleaned up’ my desktop after I gave in to their persistent calls, fearing that I might be messing up the system for others if I let the malware that was ā€˜found’ in my desktop persist. In the end it cost me $209.99, supposedly for lasting protection.

HOW-EVAH! For the past 2-3 weeks the ā€˜Windows technical support department’ has been phoning me again because there are problems in my system, yada, yada, yada. (apparently in my laptop). Thing is, it’s not yet a year since they collected my $200+ and the guy I spoke to kept saying that my payment must have been for virus protection which they don’t do and which I won’t need once they have cleaned up my system. He rattled on for almost an hour and wouldn’t let me hang up, until I insisted if i didn’t go and eat it would precipitate my migraine (truth). Even then he promised to call back in 15 minutes and kept calling when I didn’t answer. No doubt he’ll call back tomorrow. Just the thought of it is starting to get me mad again. Anyway, is there really a part of the tech department that phones and bugs people?

No. That’s a spam going on of late. Don’t fall for it. And never ever allow them to ‘remotely’ access your computer.

Next time, when he calls, tell him you have got caller id and you’re contacting the police for on-line harassment.

      • 161 99ts
        February 14, 2013 at 10:03 pm

VP – this is a scam – I don’t believe they harm your computer – but they do nothing of use. When I abused them for calling – I got a call EVERY 2 HOURs in retaliation. I now hang up. Friend of mine paid them $AU300 – and let them into his computer – he wouldn’t believe me when I said it was a hoax – until they called again 4 weeks later – asking him to “join up”. Seems to be a world wide group .

The cleanups they do you can easily do yourself & they don’t help for long. The main reason computers run slow – I believe are threefold

        1. not enough memory – upgrade it if you can
        2. Virus programs – nortons & macafee seem to have added slow and slower to my machines in the past. With windows 7 I use the microsoft supplied virus system – no problems at all
        3. Windows updating – makes the operating system bigger and bigger – hence the need for more memory.

Find a local PC shop – or one of the “come to your home” techies if you want useful help/advice. Fortunately my husband is my techie – but one of my cousins (widow) has found a wonderful local guy to sort her problems.

Hi, CB. The first payment was in October last year so I’d think I’m no longer able to cancel it. Also, I’m willing to swallow this as payment for my gullibility (though I hate being a statistic šŸ˜‰ ).

Funny thing is I was so uneasy at the time, that I called the visa company shortly after the approval of payment was received, thinking they may have made more than one withdrawal. That wasn’t the case so I told myself they must have been legit.

Ah me! It pains to know I was taken in. I can survive (and have survived) the loss of the money but my self-esteem has taken a blow. Little do they know that if they hadn’t approached me so soon they might have gotten away with it a 2nd time – although I’m not sure it’s the same people as the company has a different name, and the voices are different.

I’m going over to the next thread, or on twitter – to wash my mind. Thanks, one and all!

Thanks guys. So I’ve been scammed once! Grrr!

I was very wary the first time, but their persistence and several little things they said made me take a chance. When they only deducted the one amount from my visa, I felt they must have been legit, and was only suspicious this time because it wasn’t yet a year since the previous time, so obviously their whatever hadn’t worked. I let them into the system again, and they might have gotten away with it again just by wearing me down, if it wasn’t for the fact that I really needed to go and eat AND they seemed to have no record of my last payment. They did give me a name, employer ID # and phone number to check but I just wasn’t in the mood today – that’s why I was so grumpy when I signed on earlier today.

Amk, I do not have caller ID and I am not a convincing liar, so I won’t try that one. I really would report them if I had it tho and if their number showed. Anyway, they were so persistent that I’m sure I’ll be hearing from them again. I’ll sleep on what I’ll say to them tomorrow. Does anyone know if the fact that they accessed my computer today means they can cause damage if I don’t respond the way they want tomorrow? IOW, can they access it again tomorrow without my help?

vc – fortunately it was not an expensive scam – as I said they are “legitimate scammers” – hahaha – but they only take cash you authorize. They are also stupid to keep calling the same people – because the word of the scam then spreads – my friend would not believe anyone – until they asked him for more money – he got really upset with me for suggesting it may not be valid.

I’m sorry I can’t help with the microsoft virus thing – are you on Windows 7 or later? I’m not sure it works before then – and as amk says it is automatic with a valid windows.

No, they can’t damage your ‘puter unless you give them remote access. Just download the programs I mentioned above and run them all one after another. That should clean up your ‘puter for good.

I did give them remote access this morning, but it was taking too much time so I cut it off to go and eat. What I’m wondering is if my cutting them off, cut off their access fully, or could they continue from where I left off without my help?

Also, the last time I tried to clean up cookies (an idea I got from you), I lost info I didn’t know how to save prior to the cookie eating, so now I’m afraid to try anything on my own. This computer business is way too much for the likes of me, who has no interest in them other than to turn them on to see what TODville is up to and to type an odd letter or tweet or two.

If you are talking about CCleaner, then go to Options/Cookies and then move the cookies from left to the right the ones you want to keep.

It can’t be simpler than that.

Also. Too. Never EVER allow anyone to access your computer remotely. However sweet or genuine they sound.

I hear you, and will check out the caller ID. Maybe tomorrow if i remember to call the telephone company. Of course, it’s just as easy for them to block their numbers if they know they are in a nefarious business.

VC, if they keep calling and won’t take no for an answer, if I may offer a simple, perhaps obnoxious (but successful) last resort suggestion. Buy a whistle. Keep it by the phone. Next time they call, ask them politely to please stop calling, no longer interested in their services, add a note to their records to stop calling you, or else they are going to be on the receiving end of this every time they call. Then blow the whistle as loud as you can into your phone’s receiver. I used this with a couple of very aggressive telemarketers (before the Do Not Call list went into effect) from a credit card company trying to hawk credit card protection insurance and a wholly host of other things, a timeshare company who just would not take no for an answer, even after repeated requests to stop calling and hanging up on them. After a couple of times of issuing a warning to stop calling and blowing the whistle, they got the message and stopped calling.

We have GOT to keep her in the Senate to help the everyday people. I would love to see her one day be President or in a Presidential administration but she could be the “NEW” Lion of the Senate to take over for Ted Kennedy.

Hello night folks – I just logged on to the sad news about GOP filibuster – all I am wondering is when John McCain will vote against someone who said mean things about Sarah Palin. What a waste of space that man is. I could say worse – but as President Obama always abstains from the nasty – I will try and follow his example

It’s hard sometimes to abstain from being nasty, I have never seen a bunch of Republicans like these. They are nasty, disrespectful, racists, liars, and it doesn’t bother them one bit.

Oh Bob – it is more than SICK – in every possible way – McCain is seriously sick – and heading for Alzheimer’s, dementia or insanity. There is no-one, in the world, who truly believes in those WMD that took the US, UK and many others into the war in Iraq. Tony Blair also, too, should not be allowed on the world stage – tine he spent the rest of his years on the ranch with GWB

OT: Watching The Colbert Report and some old guy who worked for .85 cents an hour during the 1940’s or 50’s making minimum wage as a teen and glad to have it….I NEVER worked minimum wage in 1974 when I graduated from high school. Minimum wage was less than $2 hr and I made anywhere from $5 to $7 back then working part time until I graduated from college. When I was a teen working in the summer is the only time I made minimum wage.

So, finally, a happy Valentine’s Day to my beloved TOD family. Missus and I are having a dinner ordered from Bristol Farms—a local chichi supermarket. She’s having the salmon and I’m having the filet mignon, both in pastries. I’m about to go heat the oven so that we can get this show rolling.

Can someone tell me how to share the individual posts from this blog on my Facebook page? I guess I really am almost 50, because I can’t seem to figure it out!! 😦

    • February 14, 2013 at 10:50 pm

If you are referring to a “post” as in a thread, scroll up to the top of the blog and before people enter replies look you will see a little toolbar where is says like and there is a facebook icon. Is that what you are asking?
