Desiline

****

Washington Post: When she set out to her local library in North Miami to cast her vote in the presidential election last year, Desiline Victor had no way of knowing the journey would lead all the way to the White House.

On Tuesday night, Victor, a 102-year-old Haitian immigrant, will sit in the ornate House chamber as a guest of first lady Michelle Obama to listen to President Obama’s State of the Union address.

Victor voted for the president, but it was not easy. On her first visit to the polls on the morning of Oct. 28, the first day of early voting, she waited in line for three hours. Poll workers eventually advised her to come back later, and she did.

….. The whirlwind trip has taken Victor out of her element. She had to buy a coat, since a heavy winter jacket isn’t usually needed in balmy Miami. And here, she’s “Ms. Victor” instead of “Granny”….

But when she meets the president, perhaps the address may be less formal. Victor already feels a kinship with the commander in chief.

“I call him ‘my son,’ ” she says. “I feel like he is my son.”

Yes, 99ts, because no matter what his prejudices and political differences, it is common humanity to applaud a 102 year old who stands in line so long and cares to much about voting. Boenher is completely with class. A low life.

That’s what I thought. He never impressed me as a good speaker and he proved me right tonight. They think $400,000 is still middle class, yet average household makes $45,000. There is something wrong with that idea. $30 an hour minimum wage would be $60-70,000 a year, depending on hours work. Try raising a family of four on that.

‘No body’ found in California cabin

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-21437322

The CA police’s ham handed approach is stunning. Burn off the house to get to a guy who was not there ?

    • 68 theo67
      February 13, 2013 at 1:58 am

Someone posted that the sheriff said the house was too hot, and they won’t attempt to get in there tonight. Any reports about bodies is incorrect. The whole thing is a tragedy. This Dorner character was one of the “good guys” that LaPierre is always spouting off about, and yet, he’s created such tragedy – fr himself and other people. This wasn’t the way to handle it- on all sides.

    • 69 carolmaewy
      February 13, 2013 at 5:48 am

I read in LA Times a few minutes ago there is a body. They are not saying it is Dorner until forensics are in. Will take some time to sort it out. It was two maids he tied up. It was apparently a rental cabin. When the owner saw it on local TV, she new it was supposed to be empty and called police. It’s worth the read to sort things out a little better. I don’t follow LA Times, so don’t know about their credibility, but sounded like sounded like a good police briefing and they didn’t make wild claims. Police still protecting those named in manifesto just in case. I’m still confused about the timeline and just how many people he killed. At least four too many. I’m trying to take in #SOTU so I’ll sort through the facts about Dorner tomorrow.

I’m glad the Big Gulp happened as it was emblematic of the phoniness of Marco Rubio as a potential leader in our country. He lies about his own biography and tries to present his story and his values as something other than what they truly are. He is a phony, a con man, trying to con his way into the oval office. I think his con began to unravel some time ago, but this evening it melted away.

She may be one of the twenty-six victims of gun violence or there as a place filler. Ms. Victor only speaks Haitian Creole. It may have been a long day for her. Or it may be the women who sent the names of the people in Florida who had waited a long time in line. I don’t think those seats would be that comfortable and the traffic and waiting in line, going through security checks, she was caught in a moment. On Morning Joe they’re talking about Calvin Coolidge and praising him to the high heavens. What is it about these people and revisionist history? He was the President of eugenics, who wrote “There are racial considerations too grave to be brushed aside for any sentimental reasons. Biological laws tell us that certain divergent people will not mix or blend. The Nordics propagate themselves successfully. With other races, the outcome shows deterioration on both sides. Quality of mind and body suggests that observance of ethnic law is a great necessity to a nation as immigration law.”

He signed the immigration law that banned Asians, the mentally ill, illiterate, epileptics, homosexuals, alcoholics, etc. He signed the law that allowed mandatory sterilization.

The European Union and the US will begin formal talks on a free-trade agreement, paving the way for the biggest trade deal in history.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso made the joint announcement following President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address.

A deal would bring down trading barriers between the two biggest economies in the world.

    EU-US trade is worth around 455bn euros (£393bn; $613bn) a year.

Mr Obama announced US support for talks as part of his annual address to Congress on Tuesday, saying a free-trade deal would “boost American exports, support American jobs and level the playing field in the growing markets of Asia”.

In a joint statement, US and EU leaders said trade between the US and EU supported millions of jobs on both sides of the Atlantic.

Hi there, LDS! Nothing yet. Can’t decide what to eat. You know that feeling when you want something ‘nice’ but can’t decide what? I’ll probably go eat a yogurt as consolation in a little bit.

What a heroine Desiline Victor is, and I do not think it was a coincidence, that Ms. Valerie Jarrett, was seated right in front of Ms. Victor, very respectful of the inner circle of The White House, though I did not expect otherwise – the humanity of President Obama shows at all levels, in sharp contrast to the absolutly embarrasing and rude
behaviour of John Boehner, who as a host ( in his case a so called “host”) did not at all live up his job, respecting
all “his ” guests. What a small mind, and if I were him, I would have committed harakiri on the spot…
Mario Rubio as “wunderkind” forget it!
President Obama fullfilled the greatest expectations, what a pleasure to witness him.
Thank You Chipsticks for all You do, and last night for the best laugh in a long time!
