@petesouza: ‘Photo of the day: POTUS w outgoing SecDef Panetta at his farewell tribute’

Greg Sargent: John Boehner’s office is circulating Charles Krauthammer’s column, which argues that Republicans should call Obama’s sequester “bluff” and make no concessions whatsoever in revenues to avert the sequester. This is still more confirmation that the GOP’s explicit position is that allowing the sequester to happen – which Republicans themselves say will gut the military and tank the economy – is preferable to compromising at all with Dems, and that they will use the threat of disaster to force a solution that averts the sequester only by giving Republicans everything they want.

….. we’re back to exactly where we were during the fiscal cliff and debt ceiling fights. Republicans are explicitly and openly using the prospect of serious harm to millions and millions of Americans to force Democrats to agree to a deal that gives Republicans everything that they want, while requiring them to make no concessions whatsoever….

Steve Benen: When it comes to the looming, automatic sequestration cuts, there seem to be two broader debates happening simultaneously. The first, more important question deals with what’s going to happen with the policy itself, and the scope of the damage it could do to the economy, the military, and the country.

The second question is a little pettier: who came up with this awful idea in the first place? A Republican National Committee spokesperson, echoing his party’s favorite new talking point, insists this is all President Obama’s fault.

…. Does the GOP have a point on this? Was the policy actually Obama’s idea? No. The argument is not only wrong, it’s dependent on the entire political world having a very short memory …. Since this has become such an important element of the larger fight, let’s take a minute to set the record straight…..

Business Insider: ….  Charles Krauthammer writes that Republicans should “call Obama’s sequester bluff.” It’s being passed around by Republicans and other conservatives on Twitter and in email blasts. His argument – which exemplifies a typical conservative shift on the sequester recently – is that Republicans now have leverage on the sequester over President Barack Obama…..

…. Krauthammer wasn’t always so bullish on using the sequester as a tool for leverage. Last May, he warned in an appearance on Fox News that letting the cuts go into effect would be a “catastrophe” for the nation’s defense…..

…. The conservative editorial board of The Wall Street Journal advanced a similar argument on Thursday. In an editorial entitled “The Unscary Sequester,” the editorial board disputed Washington’s “collective fit of terror.”

…. Then there’s the editorial the board wrote not even seven months ago. It used the same language as Krauthammer – “catastrophe,” which it wrote was “playing out in slow motion.” The board also said that Obama had the leverage, and that it would be a “dangerous game” to play with the sequester.

RollCall: President Barack Obama has agreed to do more than just raise money for House Democrats’ effort to win back the majority in 2014: He is also going to help with candidate recruitment.

Obama will headline eight fundraising events in 2013 for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and more fundraisers are planned for 2014. But Obama’s agreement to help DCCC Chairman Steve Israel of New York make the sell to would-be candidates in targeted districts is also significant.

“It’s transformational,” Israel said in an interview, adding that House Democrats are “firing on all cylinders like I’ve never seen before.”

The president’s efforts to assist House Democrats politically are more than Israel initially even asked for.

Ari Berman (The Nation): In 2006, Congress voted overwhelmingly to reauthorize key provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 for another twenty-five years. The legislation passed 390–33 in the House and 98–0 in the Senate. Every top Republican supported the bill …. Civil rights leaders flanked George W. Bush at the signing ceremony.

Seven years later, the bipartisan consensus that supported the VRA for nearly fifty years has collapsed, and conservatives are challenging the law as never before. Last November, three days after a presidential election in which voter suppression played a starring role, the Supreme Court agreed to hear a challenge to Section 5 of the VRA, which compels parts or all of sixteen states with a history of racial discrimination in voting to clear election-related changes with the federal government. The case will be heard on February 27.

The lawsuit, originating in Shelby County, Alabama, is backed by leading operatives and funders in the conservative movement, along with Republican attorneys general in Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, South Carolina, South Dakota and Texas….

Washington Post: First lady Michelle Obama will join some of Illinois’ most recognizable politicians and clergy Saturday to mourn a 15-year-old honor student whose death has drawn attention to staggering gun violence in the nation’s third-largest city.

But Hadiya Pendleton’s family says her Saturday funeral service won’t be about politics, but about remembering a girl who loved to dance, once appeared in an anti-gang video and died just days after performing at one of President Barack Obama’s inauguration events.

None of the dignitaries are slated to speak during the service. The teen’s pastor and brother will talk, and the musical group Pendleton was a member of will perform.

NYT: Among the victims of gun violence who will be sitting in the House chamber on Tuesday night when President Obama delivers his State of the Union address will be a teacher who survived the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Natalie Hammond, who reportedly took bullet wounds to the leg, foot and hand but narrowly escaped with her life, will attend the speech as the guest of her congresswoman, Elizabeth Esty, the representative for Newtown, Conn.

Ms. Hammond, the school’s lead teacher, and another school employee were the only two people to survive after being shot by the gunman, Adam Lanza. Ms. Hammond will be one of the many victims of gun violence who will attend the State of the Union address.

A right to have a gun does not mean that we cannot control the when…how…and what..as it relates to gun ownership/it is important to ban military style weapons and high capacity magazines/but just as important is upping the penalties on straw purchases of handguns…licensing of guns….universal background checks/ tracking of gun purchases/and i agree with the writer…funding needs to be made available to those entities to be able to upgrade their systems…

bit of a joke for thawing

My husband and I purchased an old home in Northern New York State from two elderly sisters. Winter was fast approaching and the years first snow came early and I was concerned about the house’s lack of insulation. “If they could live here all those years, so can we!” my husband confidently declared. One November night the temperature plunged to below zero, and we woke up to find interior walls covered with frost. My husband called the sisters to ask how they had kept the house warm. The sisters told him “For the past 30 years, we’ve gone to Florida for the winter.”

The 2011 ransom note and the GOP’s sequester

    By Steve Benen

Republicans now want Americans to believe this was all Obama’s fault. Let’s consider the evidence:

    1. Republicans created the debt-ceiling crisis.

    2. Republicans wrote the ransom note and named their price.

    3. Republicans endorsed, accepted, and voted for this plan, saying they’d accept the consequences.

and 4. Republicans now refuse to compromise (again) to deal with the mess they created.

So we’re supposed to believe this is Obama’s fault? That’s only true if you ignore literally every detail and pretend reality has no meaning.

Let’s make this plain: the sequester is a key part of the ransom the GOP settled for during the debt-ceiling crisis they created. It’s a little late to pass the buck now.

That said, if Republicans don’t like the sequester, they have a terrific option available to them: they can cancel it and end this stupidity once and for all.

Keep safe in the snow everyone – I’m cold just thinking about it – and it’s still summer in my world.

Interesting that the GOP pundits are moving on to talk about the sequester. Guess they realize the President maybe knows what he is doing internationally, so lets get back to taxes and expenditure. They keep looking for a debate they can win – even if it means reversing their position on something – anything – whatever.

I’m willing to wager Boehner is not willing to put the country under water – despite the insanity from pundits and the right wing of his party.

Worst Speaker Ever: John Boehner Uses Pathetic Twitter Campaign to Blame Obama for Sequester

    By: Sarah Jones

Republicans held the economy hostage and caused the first ever credit downgrade. No matter what cuts Obama offered, they refused. Desperate to come to some agreement with the Republicans before they destroyed the economy, the sequester was born. The Republicans voted to pass the sequester and Boehner crowed that he got 98% of what the Republicans wanted.

Now that the sequester is here, suddenly John Boehner is sending out pictures from Bob Woodward’s book and the Republican Party is desperate to pin the blame for it on Obama.

The sequester is the direct result of the Republican attempt to use the debt ceiling as a weapon of mass economic destruction. Now Republicans are trying to pin the need for the sequester on Obama, which is like blaming someone for putting iron bars on their window after you steal from them.

    • February 9, 2013 at 10:14 am

This infuriates me. This dishonesty is worth an investment in ad space to air all the press conferences and interviews with Boehner and Paul Ryan bragging about the sequester. There’s even a video with Romney saying the Republicans had made a bad deal because of the cuts to defense.

There was a video on a 3 yrs old on HP on 2-08-13 of a tyke, named John….with sprinkles on his face and right below his nose. He was not supposed to touch the sprinkles, but he did…leaving the clear container half full and a little messy as only a 3 yrs old could make. This video is so juvenile for the little tyke was denying that he had touched let alone eaten the sprinkles. Once I saw this picture. I rushed out looking for the 3 yrs old video. I could not find it. I am going to search once more. It is really a funny video. It compliments these two dogs and their muddy feet.

You gotta give the GOP props for always out-crazying themselves on issue after issue. Economy, budget, social issues, VRA, etc. In 2011, Boehner gloated all over the TV and inter-webs that he got “98% of what he wanted” in the debt ceiling deal and now it’s Pres. Obama’s fault? Now they’re listening to Krauthhammer and the WSJ and pushing for sequestration?

Do they not understand that sequestration hurts their talking points, lobbyists, and base? Over $500B will be cut from Defense and the GOP’s talking point goes poof! Sequestration while horrible greatly affects the republican side of the aisle more than the Democratic. Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and the like are spared from sequestration so if the GOP wants to go ahead, then “Please Proceed.”

Pres. Obama has a bigger bully pulpit and has actually put a plan out there to avoid sequestration and what is the GOP doing? Shooting themselves in the foot once again. *sits back and eats popcorn*

    • February 9, 2013 at 10:40 am

Good Morning. This and this again. That’s why Lindsay Graham has been running around for months having a conniption. If they listen to someone like Krauthammer with absolutely no skin in the game the Defense lobby will make Republicans pay big time. So go ahead and listen to these loons who got you into this mess in the first place. Excellent breakdown UT.

A bogus flier from the fictional “Office of Information Awareness” is being taped to trash cans in Tempe, and it has some neighbors worried.

“(The flier) says ‘Sorry we missed you,’ and it’s from the Office of Total Information Awareness,” said Carmen Febus, whose 88-year-old father first spotted the official-looking orange flier.

“Then it said (the ‘agent’ who posted the flier) checked my waste for suspicious purposes,” she continued.

Febus said she wanted to simply throw away the flier, but her father was worried.

“He basically told me ‘You’re going to jail,'” said Febus.

So Febus called Tempe police, who told her it was likely just a solicitation. CBS 5 News checked out the website listed on the flier. Posted on the website are instructions on how to download and mass produce the flier. The site says the flier can be used as an anti-government activist tool. Calls and emails to the website operator were not returned.

    Diary of a Snow Shoveler

    December 6 – 6:00 PM
It started to snow. The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma Moses Print. So romantic we felt like newlyweds again. I love snow!

    December 7
We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Can there be a lovelier place in the whole world? Moving here was the best idea I’ve ever had! Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again.
I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a perfect life!

    December 8
The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a disappointment! My neighbor Bob tells me not to worry- we’ll definitely have a white Christmas.
No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says we’ll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I’ll never want to see snow again
I don’t think that’s possible. Bob is such a nice man, I’m glad he’s our neighbor.

    December 14
Snow, lovely snow! 8 inches last night. The temperature dropped to -20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks. This is the life! The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again. I didn’t realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I’ll certainly get back in shape this way. I wish l wouldn’t huff and puff so.

    December 15
20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4×4 Blazer. Bought snow tires for the wife’s car and 2 extra shovels. Stocked the freezer.
The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out. I think that’s silly. We aren’t in Alaska , after all.

    December 16
Ice storm this morning. Fell on my ass on the ice in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt like hell. The wife laughed for an hour, which I think was very cruel.

    December 17
Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her. Guess I should’ve bought a wood stove, but won’t admit it to her. God I hate it when she’s right. I can’t believe I’m freezing to death in my own living room.

    December 20
Electricity’s back on, but had another 14 inches of the damn stuff last night. More shoveling! Took all day. The damn snowplow came by twice.
Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they’re too busy playing hockey. I think they’re lying. Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they’re out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they’re lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me. I think he’s lying.

    December 22
Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white shit fell today, and it’s so cold, it probably won’t melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to piss. By the time I got undressed, pissed and dressed again. I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter, but he says he’s too busy. I think the asshole is lying.

    December 23
Only 2 inches of snow today And it warmed up to 0. The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What is she, nuts?!!
Why didn’t she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she did but I think she’s lying.

    December 24
6 inches – Snow packed so hard by snowplow, l broke the shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch the son of a bitch who drives that snow plow, I’ll drag him through the snow by his balls and beat him to death with my broken shovel. I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I’ve just been! Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was too busy watching for the damn snowplow.

    December 25
Merry freaking Christmas! 20 more inches of the damn slop tonight -Snowed in. The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. God, I hate the snow! Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude. I think she’s an idiot. If I have to watch “It’s A Wonderful Life” one more time, I’m going to stuff her into the microwave.

    December 26
Still snowed in. Why the hell did I ever move here? It was all HER idea. She’s really getting on my nerves.

    December 27
Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze; plumber came after 14 hours of waiting for him, he only charged me $1,400 to replace all my pipes.

    December 28
Warmed up to above -20. Still snowed in. The BITCH is driving me crazy!!!

    December 29
10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in.. That’s the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am?

    December 30
Roof caved in. I beat up the snow plow driver, and now he is suing me for a million dollars, not only the beating I gave him, but also for trying to shove the broken snow shovel up his ass. The wife went home to her mother. Nine more inches predicted.

    December 31
I set fire to what’s left of the house. No more shoveling.

    January 8
Feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep giving me.
Why am I tied to the bed?

The president made banning the further production of highly enriched uranium and plutonium a priority in an April 2009 speech in Prague, but progress on a treaty stalled due to opposition from Pakistan.
Administration officials and arms control activists believe they now have a new window for action. They point to increased cooperation on the UN Security Council and the beginning of John Kerry’s tenure as secretary of State as reasons for optimism.

“John Kerry comes to the position with an immense depth of experience on nuclear, non-proliferation and disarmament issues and he has long supported the risk-reduction measures that the Obama administration has committed itself to,” said Daryl Kimball, the executive director of the Arms Control Association.

“He is going to be a very active and creative force for advancing the president’s nuclear risk reduction agenda, which remains unfinished.”

What’s changed about the GOP is that they’re willing to sabotage the economy

But the GOP is fine with this because they say it was the President’s idea, which is like saying that paying a ransom was the kidnapped child’s mother’s idea. The sequestration only exists because the GOP took the debt limit hostage for the first time in history in 2011 and demanded cuts that have proved to hurt the economy.

I believe they did this because Republicans understand better than anyone else why they won in 2010. It wasn’t because they cared about spending or debt or even Obamacare — growth in spending under Obama is lower than it’s been since the 1950s.

The GOP won in 2010 because the economy sucked.
Now in 2013, the GOP is willing to go right into a sequestration that they admit will “help the enemy” and “tank the economy” because Charles Krauthammer has convinced them that they they will be able to blame it on the president. Hey, it worked in 2010!

Rwnj comments on certain blogs are promoting Dr. Carson to run for POTUS in 2016 because they are claiming he insulted PBO at the National Prayer Breakfast. I wish PBO and FLOTUS could skip the breakfast in the future but the right wing would go even more nuts. The right wing’s only objective is to insult PBO.

So…..this doctor is the some Repukes’ new shiny object…..they are desperate, desperate, desperate. I’m sure part of their fascination is his color…..they keep trying, don’t they. Truly pathetic.
I went to cspan and listened to parts of the prayer breakfast, and listened to the first two sentences of the doctor, did not find him at all interesting or gratifying and skipped to the president. He was terrific. This is just another blip…..the president has left that all behind and moved on! These silly Rs just keep chewing over the same thing, over and over and over.

      • February 9, 2013 at 11:32 am

Dr Carson is a right wing nut. Before the election he was interviewed by one of the hosts in Fox land and he showed his true self infact he was even mild in the prayer breakfast. Such a disrespect of the Presidebt was DISGRACEFULL just cant stand those that made it do not think others could except they follow his part. Did he notice that some of our billionaires did not graduate college. He was speaking in the presence of a President that beat all odds, instead of acknowledgement he was just giving himself glory we thank God for Dr Carlson achievements but the self blotting just was uncalled for he could not even repudiate the sessionist racist Senator that introduced him and we say we are christians go figure

But they won’t. And that is a serious problem that these communities need to address. Instead of focusing on whether or not Barack/Michelle Obama will be at the funeral, etc., there are some very hard questions that community members & leaders need to ask and be prepared to answer.

Unlike the Sandy Hook, or some of the other mass shootings, this killing was not simply an isolated tragedy. It is a way of life for many of these kids. Many of them grow up not expecting to survive early adulthood. And that is a SHAME. The only reason this girl is getting any attention is that she participated in the Inauguration parade a week before she was killed. Thousands more like her get killed in the same way on a daily basis, without any mention anywhere. Where are the ADULTS? Where are the community LEADERS? What are they DOING?

Thanks for this hf. I didn’t want to comment because I know some folks think that FLOTUS’ being there is a good thing. I didn’t want to ruffle feathers. I’d never felt that FLOTUS should have gone. It becomes about her instead of the young lady whose death only symbolizes the problem that is everyday life for children just like her. It gives Rahm and his police department a way to avoid the spotlight, as all eyes will be on FLOTUS. It amazes me that no one is being held responsible for the lack of apprehending and prosecuting these idiots with guns. But, the idjits also know that

              1. they are not likely to be caught.
              2. they know they better take the law in their own hands cause nobody’s gonna protect them.
              3. there are no alternatives presented to them to live a better way.
              4. there are certain parts of town where any infraction becomes a city-wide APB.
              5. The PTSD that must be prevalent in many of those children are not even taken into account.
              6. The parents are indeed responsible and should speak up when they know their own child has committed the act. How many of them are as afraid of their own kid or their friends?
              7. Why aren’t those children ever looked at as having mental issues? Where are the social services/family services to help before the kid gets out of hand.
              8. When you’re called a thug and looked on as a thug, chances are you’ll act like one.
              9. Chicago hosts international events with dignitaries from all over. They host annual events that attract millions in one day. All this without any dire incidents. If they can do that, they can certainly use those resources to serve and protect the citizens of one primary area of the city where most of this is occurring.

I don’t know the answers, but I know that FLOTUS attending one funeral of the countless many deaths that have happened to children in Chicago ain’t it.

It stayed cold for a few days afterwards, and since I had nowhere that I just had to be, I didn’t bother with it. Well Thursday, I went to go somewhere and the battery was completely dead. Evidently, all that yanking on the car doors had loosen one just enough to open it so the inside light went on. Right now, we have to find some way to get a surplus in or deficit.
As long as their is a deficit, we are fighting an uphill battle.
We need to spend to better this country, but with a deficit adding to the debt? It is nearly impossible.

A space rock about the size of a jet plane will zip so close to Earth that it will briefly come between us and our weather satellites next week.

Asteroid 2012 DA14 will be just 27,700 kilometres from the surface — a mere tenth of the distance between the Earth and the moon — when it makes its closest approach around 2:24 p.m. ET on Feb. 15. At that time, it will be zooming by at about 28,100 kilometres per hour or 7.82 kilometres per second relative to Earth.

DA14 will come 8,100 kilometres closer to Earth than man-made weather and communications satellites that are in geosynchronous orbit, which means they circle the Earth once a day.

In fact, the 45-metre diameter, 130,000-tonne asteroid will come closer than any object its size has ever been predicted to come before.

Her 5th grade class last year came up with the idea of putting GPS devices on fire hydrants, held fundraisers, got grants, followed it to fruition as their community service project. It is especially helpful now when hydrants are buried under mounds of snow and when many fires occur as people are using other methods of heating and lighting their homes with loss of power. Proud of her and her great neighborhood school there. Her teacher, by the way, was in D.C. this weekend getting an Outstanding Teacher award.

Americans of all political persuasions agree that lines of this magnitude are a disgrace. As President Obama said on election night, “We have to fix that.” But what — precisely — should be done? How do we fix that?

There are three reforms that would dramatically reduce the excessive lines that plague voting, and have the added benefit of creating a more efficient and secure electoral system:
    1.Modernizing voter registration
2.Providing early voting during a fixed national time period
3.Setting minimum standards for polling place access

        February 9, 2013 at 12:19 pm

This article illustrates some thoughts I’ve been having this morning…This may be a little long, but I think is interesting.
Last night my husband and I had dinner with good friends of ours who were missionaries in South Africa and the Kingdom of Swaziland for several years. They loved their time there and their friends.
In the course of the evening they talked about how the Swazis and other Africans approached conflict. He said they are not confrontational. If a person is being a problem in a group, the head of that group will talk to someone else, and that someone else will go to the problem, and will start to work out a solution. There will be no confrontation. However, the problem will be worked out, but will save the face of the original problem person. I said, “Oh, they work by indirection.” He said yes….and always consider the other person’s feelings. So, then it hit me.”That is how President Obama works.” He replied yes. This couple are BIG Obama supporters like all of us are.
So then this morning I started thinking about the SOS appointments. We forget how far down Hillary was after the 2008 election. She and her supporters were feeling trampled on. I think she could have been a real problem in the Senate. So what did he do? Made her SOS, part of HIS team, saved her face and pacified her rabid supporters.
Now to Kerry…..I am sure Kerry was ALWAYS going to be the new SOS. In 2008 Obama knew he would be a more reliable vote in the Senate than Hillary, that he had great strength and clout as chair of the Foreign Relations Comm. I have a feeling Kerry knew pretty well he would be the next SOS. If not for Kerry, POTUS knew he would never have become president…..so, after Kerry’s undeserved treatment by swiftboaters, and awful illegal defeat at the hands of Rove and GWB, President Obama elevated him to a position he is uniquely qualified for, to the admiration and approbation of everyone.
Ed Schultz et al are always asking him to “Draw a line in the sand.” He won’t. He will win by indirection and patience. This paradigm, which is a combination of his African DNA and his Hawaiian upbringing is opposite of what I call the “Marauding Viking” paradigm of the last thousand years. This old way of operating is on its way out, and once again President Obama is out ahead of everyone else.
Smartypants and a few others have talked about this and wondered, as do I, why the so-called smart class can’t see it. But then, they are all Marauding Vikings.

        • 183 Lynn
          February 9, 2013 at 12:36 pm

This!! This!! This!! A Thousand times!! You put into words thoughts I could not, carolyn!! And “Marauding Vikings” it is!!

I’ve heard of SouthAmerican tribes that use group ridicule to defuse situations, mocking as ‘childish’ aggressive or bullying behavior in youngsters to teach proper respect and self-control while discouraging violence. Not the same approach, but the subtle results can be similar.

I think you have accurately followed the President’s thought processes re the SOS position and the participants past and present.

        • February 9, 2013 at 12:46 pm

          That is EXCELLENT carolyn!!

I’ve seen this but struggled with a framework for it. I’ve thought in terms of the masculine/feminine or the ying/yan. But neither one totally works.

            February 9, 2013 at 4:19 pm

One further thought about Hillary……In Nov 2008, she was hurt, she was irate, she was seething, and she was going to have to go back to being one of 100. I truly believe she would have been a negative force and vote in the Senate. Think about healthcare reform…..remember how hers went down to defeat? Well, President Obama effectively “declawed” her. He then gave her a powerful platform on her very own, and she took it, ran with it and did very well. She now goes out to great acclaim, and politically on the rise. What else could have accomplished this for her? Nothing. She has now achieved status totally on her own. I do think those 112 countries record is a result of her innate competitiveness.
If she is smart, she will look at her age, her present and historical reputation, and retire on a high. Getting down in the mud of a presidential campaign would do great damage to her now stellar reputation.

Agreed, and I think she knows that too. It’s all those other forces who are putting pressure on her, for some reason that I haven’t quite figured out—-making her feel guilty and almost traitorous if she doesn’t run.
