President Obama’s ‘sequestration’ statement

Text of remarks here

****

Steve Benen: At the end of the month, deep, automatic sequestration cuts are due to kick in, hurting the economy, the Defense Department, and the general public…..

Today, President Obama said he and Congress have already approved more than $2.5 trillion in deficit reduction, and got to $4 trillion “with a balanced mix of spending cuts and more tax reform,” with the latter including changes “so that the wealthiest individuals and corporations can’t take advantage of loopholes and deductions that aren’t available to most Americans.”

Is there time for a major budget agreement and a tax-reform compromise? Of course not, which is why Obama suggested Congress pass “a smaller package of spending cuts and tax reforms that would delay the economically damaging effects of the sequester for a few more months until Congress finds a way to replace these cuts with a smarter solution.”

And, of course, Republicans immediately rejected the idea and threatened to do deliberate harm to the economy…..

Severely stressed about it all:

President Barack Obama makes an announcement on sequestration in the White House Press Briefing Room on February 5

He made it plain but now the media is off on another tangent about drones killing Americans who happen to be terrorists. I guess we should have sent some Federal Marshalls to arrest them. So much for due process I guess.

    Well TOD Twitter Brigades:

CBO is reporting that the annual deficit this year is going to be $845B. First time in 4 yrs with below $1T. CBO also says that DC is making and slowing faster progress with our economy had it not been their continued Jingoistic games with our budget.

The six Newtown teachers and administrators who died protecting their students at Sandy Hook Elementary School will be the posthumous recipients of the 2012 Presidential Citizens Medal.

President Obama will make the presentations to surviving family members during a ceremony on Friday, Feb. 15 in the White House, according to a White House official.

Just a heads up, in case you don’t know already, if you tweet Piers Morgan with anything negative (in my case, to start showing respect for PBO by calling him “President” Obama), hard core RWNJ trolls will start tweeting you with sickening stuff. Says more about Piers and his followers than the trolls, IMHO.
