Hello Mary and congrats. Lots to talk about today! 🙂

      • February 5, 2013 at 7:55 pm

I’ve been sequestered in school in a Teacher Lab meeting all day – so I’m completely conversationless. Unless you want to talk about teaching Visible Thinking routines to second grades, that is. (Which is really quite awesome)

sounds really interesting, what’s the theory behind it and how is it applied at that grade level?

          • February 5, 2013 at 9:48 pm

This was developed by Ron Ritchart quite a few years ago. The idea is that we need to teach children how to think by making thinking visible to them (because of course they can’t see your thinking and most do not engage in the kind of conversations where they are asked for their ideas and are asked to justify them). So there are simple routines like asking a question and then following up with “What makes you say that?”. We do one called “Think-Puzzle- Explore”. First I ask them what they think they know about the topic, then they generate questions they would like to find answers for, then we discuss ways of finding out that information. If we read a book, we might do “Color-Symbol-Image”-they pick a color to represent an emotion present in the book, a symbol that represents the “heart” of the story, and an important image from the story. Today we saw a lesson called “Generate-Sort-Connect”. The children began by generating a list of ideas from their unit on Economics. They wrote each word on a separate sticky note. They were free to discuss as they worked. Then they sorted all the stickies into groups that they determined and labeled them (I saw “want”s, “needs”, “opportunity cost”, “scarcity”, “business” etc. Finally they drew lines to show connections between the groups and wrote a sentence describing the connections. This was a group of mixed first and second graders. It’s really powerful and exciting work.

not at all. I’ve already copied it to my ‘things to look into for future reference/resource’ file. My grandson is 2nd grade and I like to stay aware of what’s going on at his grade level. this helps thanks.

                  • February 5, 2013 at 11:43 pm

This is a link that briefly describes some of the routines that might be used in lower el. You can ‘like’ MakingThinkingVisible on facebook – Ron Ritchart posts on there frequently, and if you’re interested in seeing it in action, there are lots of youtube videos at all different levels if you search for ‘making thinking visible’ or ‘visible thinking routines’.

Thanks, Bob. Eric Cantor looks like a fool. His trying to emulate PBO in any way is like a little girl wearing mommy’s high heels–only little girls grow up and he can’t. He’s gotten that PBO’s words stir people and he figures if he just uses a few of them, maybe somebody will think he, too, has some star power. He’s a pathetic excuse for a human being and a seriously unpleasant politician. If he thinks he’s going to get the kind of points that will make him the Speaker of the House, as Abby Hoffman suggested, I think he mistakes the lunatics he works with.

A little mind experiment on targeted drone strikes

    • February 5, 2013 at 8:12 pm

I’ll never be President, but I know who I am and I assure you, as in 100%, if I had received the NIE attached to this tweet …

… and I had precise target information, particularly if I had the capacity to verify the presence of known terrorists at the time of giving the command to fire (a specific capacity of a drone), I would not have hesitated to do so. When you take an Oath to protect and defend it means you do everything you possibly can to stop anyone from harming Americans.

I’m an MD and have never killed anyone and have no intention of ever doing so, but I also understand the responsibilities of the Office of the President and the responsibility of protecting lives of innocent Americans is second to none.

Did someone wash those apples and wipe them dry before they put them in the bowl? What kind of apples are they? Were they grown organically? What do they do with the apple cores? Don’t they need napkins nearby? After the first couple of bites, apples can get messy.
Do they don’t eat those apples after they’ve been sitting out all day, what happens to them? Does someone make a pie or applesauce or do they stick ’em in the fridge overnight and put ’em back out on the table the next day.

      These things bother me. 🙂

Let’s see I’ll need a camera crew, private jet for my posse, accomodations in the Lincoln Bedroom (hmm, maybe SLOTUS won’t mind putting up the crew at the Naval Observatory), a limo for transport to off-site dinner excursions (er.. research), new wardrobe, a manicurist, hair dresser (oh maybe Mrs. O wouldn’t mind sharing her’s for a short stint), personal chef (er… food consultant — you know Chef Comerford is lovely, but I don’t think I can trust her to give up juice when it comes to those apples).

I’ll need to stay there for at least a week, so I have enough material for the editors to whittle down my five-part expose’ entitled “Apple-gate: The Scandal That Rocked the White House To Its Core” [Heh, heh… See what I did there? Clever huh?] It’ll be a BLOCKBUSTER!

The people DEMAND answers and I’m gonna get ’em!

Senators ask Obama to justify his authority to kill US citizens

    By Ramsey Cox
A bipartisan group of senators asked President Obama for legal justifications for his authority to kill American citizens during the course of counterterrorism operations.

On Monday, Sens. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Mike Lee (R-Utah), Mark Udall (D-Colo.), Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Dick Durbin (Ill.), Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), Tom Udall (D-N.M.), Mark Begich (D-Alaska) and Al Franken (D- Minn.) sent Obama a letter seeking the legal opinions issued by the Department of Justice, which give the president authority to authorize the deaths of U.S. citizens.

Aren’t these the same people who refuse to let the President close down Gitmo and set up a new facility or even to transfer and try terrorists on US soil? What exactly do they want the President to do if he captures terrorists overseas? Where should he put them? Will they petition for the release of these Americans plotting to harm other Americans like they’ve done with Bradley Manning? It’s an impossible situation. All you can do is shake your head.

  21. February 5, 2013 at 8:30 pm

Why do some policemen just want to harass people? My husband was coming out of a store at a strip shopping center. There was a senior citizen sitting in a parking lot with a flat tire. My husband walked over to her just as an officer came up to her car and told her she had to move the car in 10 minutes or he would make sure it was towed off. My husband told me she must have been in her 70’s. She looked confused and a little scared. My husband asked the officer if he was going to help her change the tire. He said he doesn’t change tires for people. He then left. My husband changed her tire and she was off in less than 10 minutes. The policeman came back in 10 minutes flat. The policeman got out of the car just in time to hear my husband call him a jerk.

All I know was he was in a good mood this morning before I left for work and now…confused and pretty angry. What happened to “Protect and SERVE”?

I wish your hubby could’ve gotten that officer’s name or badge number so he could report that creep. That was totally uncalled for. It’s always the few jerks out there that give the rest of the good ones a bad name. My brother”s retired now and I have several cousins that are either active or retired LE officers. If they saw a fellow officer treat a senior citizen like that they would never put up with it.

There are bad people in every profession. Some of them seek positions of authority so they can bully people with impunity. Members propose new calculation to reflect ‘true’ unemployment rate

    By Pete Kasperowicz
Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) on Monday introduced legislation that would require the government to include people who have stopped looking for work in its headline unemployment calculation — a change that would significantly boost the official unemployment rate.

Under current law, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) uses the so-called “U-3” measure as the primary nationwide unemployment number. That calculation does not count people who want work but have stopped looking. But another, the “U-5” measure, does include those people, and thus reflects a higher unemployment level.

    -/
You see? They would be thrilled if UE rate was 25%! Simply ecstatic!
