Better really late than never. Congrats on first Carol. Chips, you forgot to put D) All of the above. I did want to say that two of my three children are really into soccer. They are like Chips and UT….both on separate sides of the coin. It made for interesting watching of football before they grew up and moved out.

There was a competition between a team of blondes and a team of brunettes to see who could catch the most fish ice fishing.

Once the contest started, it was clear that the brunettes were going to win — they kept pulling out fish after fish. Soon, the blondes got worried and sent over one of their team to see what the brunettes were doing differently. A few minutes later, the blonde comes running back.

“A hole! You need to put a hole in the ice!”

    ///

A blonde was driving across several states to go visit her family. She was already twelve hours late and her family was getting worried. When she finally got there, she was all disheveled and dirty.

When asked what happened, she explained that she had seen sign after sign that said “CLEAN RESTROOMS AHEAD”

Chipsticks, It’s a real shame you’ve decided to emulate one of the right wing GOP tactics: If you can’t win fairly you should do everything in your power to rig the polls! After all, so the right wingers say, a win is a win, no matter how fraudulently it was achieved.

Here is my question: Is Manchester United so bad (may be as bad as the GOP) that you have to resort to rigging the polls? I simply can’t wait to read what UT has to say about your resorting to GOP tactics so as to make sure that Manchester United comes out on top.

Thanx Bob! I learned from you about sticking up for TRUTH. I just can’t begin to tell you how pained I was to go against Chipsticks, a person I love and admire so much. But wrong is wrong! Now if she had come out strongly supporting the 49ers in the Super Bowl, I might have overlooked her temporary bias relapse towards her favorite English football team.

            February 3, 2013 at 12:22 am

Hahahahaha. Good for you Nath. Everyone knows Chelsea’s the best team ever. Chipstick’s poll rigging is just another version of how Manchester United cheats all the time, plays dirty or pays the referees to help them cheat as they did on Oct 28, 2012.

      • February 2, 2013 at 8:53 pm

Nathkatun7, I am severely hurt by your poll-rigging allegations. I mean, jeez, I gave you THREE choices. Are you asking for more? #Greedy

Manchester United, you should know, are the Obots of English football, as proved by Wayne Rooney’s tweet:

Just click A, B or C and prove you too are a supporter of PBO and the one true footballing faith.

        Otherwise? Huh.

          February 2, 2013 at 9:30 pm

Chipsticks, I Love you and I love Rooney’s tweet supporting our President. What I can’t stomach is adopting the GOP tactics of Vote No and GOP wins, vote Yes and the GOP wins and abstain, and the GOP still wins. How can you call those “THREE choices?” Even more egregious for me right now is your prior assertion, in an earlier thread, that the Ravens were the favored TOD team in the Super Bowl. That really hurt me more than your rigged poll. Unless you publicly state that TOD is neutral as to which team wins the Super Bowl tomorrow, I am ready to jump on the Chelsea bandwagon in support of UT.

          • February 2, 2013 at 9:35 pm

“….. I am ready to jump on the Chelsea bandwagon in support of UT”

            Ugly, pure ugly.

            As for the Ravens business.

As Jackie said: “YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH”…. until it’s rigged by Ravens’ fans, at which point you’re good with the poll latest.

            Cough.

This poll is rigged! It was taken during the time when most of us on the West Coast were out enjoying our fabulous weather. It’s absolutely not representative of the entire TOD family.

              • February 2, 2013 at 9:56 pm

See, just like a regular election – while you westies are surfing and stuff, other folk are voting. /runs away

                • 45 nathkatun7
                  February 2, 2013 at 11:51 pm

It’s not our fault because mother nature (or God, for those religiously inclined) favored us with good weather with plenty of sunshine. If we depended just on the East Coast our beloved President Obama would not be in office. More than 20% of the President’s electoral votes came from the great state of California alone. And, if you included all the Western States not on the EST (HI, WA, OR, NV, CO, NM) the percentage of OBOTS is even much higher. So, dear Chipsticks, why conduct a poll that leaves out a substantial TOD/OBOT base? Sorry, Chips, you can run but you can’t hide. The poll was unfair to us TOD “westies.” The fact that some of us may have been surfing when the “easties” were ready to go to bed should not be used against us.

                  GO 49ers!

This morning I drove to Salem to shop at JoAnn’s fabric store. While waiting to get some fabric cut I noticed several people waiting to get SF 49er fabric cut. My thoughts were wonder what they are making and how will they have enough time to get it made for the game tomorrow? Costco was so busy I circled 3x and could not find a place to park. Probably all those people buying game snacks. I should have waited and gone during the game instead.

Until I die (and maybe beyond that time) I will never understand what can be bad about healthcare – I can accept that you have to be rich to own a car elevator (unfit and lazy perhaps as well) – but when people argue that healthcare is a privilege – they have a very distorted mindset.

I have been boycotting Whole Foods for so long, I no longer remember what the original call to boycott Whole Foods was about. Probably nefarious corporate practices of one kind or another. I have never seen a reason to stop boycotting them. And now this.

I went once, a few months after they opened in OKC. I thought it was the most pretentious, overpriced store I have ever been to. Anything they have, I can find at “normal” stores at better prices. The whole thing is an ego inflating proposition.
That info certainly verifies that I will never go there again. Once was enough.

I boycotted Whole Foods during the health care debate because this same CEO lied about Canadian employees choosing health care as one of their optional benefits – implying that the Canadian system didn’t work. Once health care passed, I went back to Whole Foods. I’m back on boycott after this most recent nonsense – haven’t been to a Whole Foods in weeks, and if you knew me in real life, you’d know I practically live at Whole Foods…

Here’s the deal with the Canadian system as it works in British Columbia. You pay for health coverage. For our two-person family it’s $106 per month. It covers all the basics — doctor, hospital, lab, xray, etc. Many employers offer policies that cover dental, extended physical therapy, anything above the basics. That works the way group insurance works in the US.
I love the system here. It’s not perfect — it is designed and implemented by humans, after all — but it has lifted a gigantic burden from our shoulders. I’m 71 and my husband is 65. When we’re sick we fight the illness, not the system. I recommend it.

Yup – my family was in Vancouver for the past 7 years – just moved back to Toronto. I lived in Toronto for years. Never thought about health insurance until I moved to the States and the health care battle began. I had no idea some people lived without health care in the developed world.

Hospital regulations require a wheel chair for patients being discharged. However, while working as a student nurse, I found one elderly gentleman already dressed and sitting on the bed with a suitcase at his feet, who insisted he didn’t need my help to leave the hospital.

After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let me wheel him to the elevator.

On the way down I asked him if his wife was meeting him.

Jesse Jackson led a march in Chicago to pressure President Obama to come to Chicago and do something about the gun violence. He is using the tragic death of Hadiyah Pendleton as a rallying cry, which I feared would happen. Jackson is also demanding that President Obama assign Homeland Security to patrol the streets of Chicago. I agree that gun violence is out of control in Chicago (and across the country) but I don’t think this kind of —–oh, I’ll just say ‘no comment’.

Chicago has a mayor, and Illinois has a governor. They have two Senators and however many Congress critters. They also have a police commissioner and varying levels of local and state government. Let them go through all those layers first before calling on the President to come to Chicago. President Obama’s trying to solve things at the national level – which is his job.

    • 130 anniebella
      February 3, 2013 at 12:16 am

Please tell me what do Jesse Jackson think President Obama can do about the gun violence in Chicago? It is going to take the people of Chicago standing up, and yes working with the police. How about the people of Chicago doing the right thing, like if anyone knows who kill that 15 year old girl, if they have any information they turn it over to the police. Homeland Security can’t patrol every darn city in the country. Why don’t Jesse go to the Mayor and Governor, how about a curfew and using the National Guards.

    • February 3, 2013 at 7:22 am

Homeland Security to patrol the streets of Chicago? Say what now? Should we send them the national guard as well and maybe some combat troops?

Seriously. Something is very wrong in that city and Homeland Security is not going to make it better. And the president coming THERE is not going to stop it either. That’s just a test to see if POTUS values black victims of gun violence as well as the white ones. Jesse Jackson needs to come to DC and rally congress. Talk to his senators (even the Repub one) and let’s get this going.

More black “leaders” need to get involved in this gun debate. Stop leaving it up to POTUS to be an ambassador. Get your asses in DC and pester the folks on Capitol Hill.

It was a celebratory mood for the boys at NASA; they had just made the scientific achievement of a lifetime.

As they were uncorking a bottle of champagne, the head of the project, Dr. Wilson, asked everyone to be quiet as he was receiving a congratulatory phone call from the President of the United States.

He picked up a special red phone.

“Mr. President,” said Dr. Wilson, grinning broadly, “after twelve years of difficult research and spending billions of dollars, we have finally found intelligent life on Mars.”

He listened for a second, and his smile gradually disappeared, replaced by a frown.

He said, “But that’s impossible… we could never do it… yes Mr. President,” and hung up the phone. He then addressed the crowd of scientists staring at him curiously.

“I have some bad news,” he said, “the President said that now that we’ve found intelligent life on Mars… he wants us to try to find it in Congress.”

A panel of elected officials and community activists met to try to solve the problem of the high rate of absenteeism in Chgo elementary schools, to “save countless children from failure in school and in life”. 32, 000 elementary kids miss 4 weeks or more of classes per year and some disappear entirely. Big problem. And it is likely a contributing factor to all the shooting deaths committed by teens and young 20’s in Chgo currently.

Poor Mark Kelly. I am thankful for all he and Gabby are doing to help with the gun issue——–but what a horrible thing——having to get up early to face revolting LaPierre.

Jeff Gauvin has some nasty stuff on his Twitter that he reported to the Secret Service…good for him…these haters just can’t handle not only the intelligent man in the WH…but the movement of change and equality in America. Their ignorance and hate consumes them. I won’t post them here.

Watching one of my faves—House Hunters on HGTV——and watching a couple looking for a home in Denmark——and they note that the Danish people consistently rank as the happiest in the world——which they attributed to the fact that the country has the most income equality, all education, health care provided etc. ——-and they’re the least materialistic, simple values.

Yes – most of those Scandinavian/Nordic countries typically and routinely rate as the happiest in the world. I believe Oprah had a show on this a few years ago. And I just read an article on the best countries to be born in – same story. So much for the anti-socialism crowd… I’m proud to say that Canada came in #9. 🙂

      here… http://www.democraticunderground.com/1014388486

LINCOLN — Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy resigned his post abruptly Saturday after questions were raised by The World-Herald about improper cell phone calls to four women, other than his wife, during the past four years.

An investigation by The World-Herald discovered that Sheehy made thousands of late-night telephone calls to the women on his state-issued cell phone, many of them long conversations held in the wee hours of the night.

Wonderful rally today kicking off Ed Markey’s campaign for the U.S. Senate in his home town of Malden, Massachusetts. It was so reassuring to hear his solid support for President Obama’s agenda. Ed Markey will be a great Senator and continue to be a champion for the environment. There was a large and very enthusiastic crowd – a lot of Obama and Warren supporters. “We Democrats” Ed told the crowd “we don’t agonize – we organize”. So it will be a very busy 5 months with the primary set for April and the special election in June. But I believe the grassroots will come out for Ed Markey. The rally ended with the now so familiar strains of “We take care of our own”. It was just like the good old days.

Don’t know if some of you have read the breaking news below.

RIP to the Ex-Navy Seal and other individual who was lost in this report.

but a part of me is wondering HOW the NRA is going to spin this tragic incident in TX where : “a good guy with a gun” who survived years protecting this country, and wrote about it in “American Sniper”, could be killed on a gun range (where I believe multiple guns are within easy access”

Reports: Ex-SEAL Kyle fatally shot on gun range

GLEN ROSE, Texas (AP) — A Texas sheriff has told local newspapers that author and former Navy SEAL Chris Kyle has been fatally shot along with another man on a gun range.
