Washington Post: President Obama will name deputy national security adviser Denis McDonough, a longtime trusted aide, as his new White House chief of staff Friday, officials said.
McDonough, 43, has spent the past two years as the No. 2 official in the National Security Council, helping guide some of the administration’s most high-profile decisions, including the military drawdowns in Iraq and Afghanistan, the response to earthquakes in Haiti and Japan and the aftermath of the terror attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya last fall.
Obama considers McDonough one of his “closest and most trusted advisors for nearly a decade,” a White House official said.

Whatever the reasoning, however, it’s important that folks understand that when Reid says protecting the filibuster is necessary to keep the Senate from being like the House, he’s wrong…..

NYT: The White House has decided to circumvent Capitol Hill as it concentrates its gun-control efforts on speeches and other public appearances by President Obama and Vice President Biden outside of Washington, according to officials with knowledge of the plans.
With Obama’s gun agenda dependent on centrist Democratic senators who are nervous about their reelection prospects, the administration has calculated that the president is better off helping to build a groundswell of popular support within the lawmakers’ states rather than negotiating directly with them, officials said.

NYT: The White House delivered a strong message to Wall Street on Thursday, taking the unusual step of choosing two former prosecutors as top financial regulators.
But translating that message into action will not be easy, given the complexities of the market and Wall Street’s aggressive nature.
At a short White House ceremony, President Obama named Mary Jo White, the first female United States attorney in Manhattan, to run the Securities and Exchange Commission. Mr. Obama also renominated Richard Cordray as the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a position he has held for the last year under a temporary recess appointment without Senate approval.
With the appointments, the president showed a renewed resolve to hold Wall Street accountable for wrongdoing, extolling his candidates’ records as prosecutors.

Morning!
Hidee Ho O’s!!!! Wassup on another great getting up day on planet TOD!!!
The ‘Pubs are lining up and taking sides. There’s the Bobby Jindal, Chris Christie, Jeb Bush faction calling the RWNJs stupid. You got the RWNJs calling them RINO, elite, Dem loving pos. You got Boner crying cause he can’t get the kids to play nice.
PS: Note to Corey Booker. Though admirable, you no longer have to be a super hero…especially with the cameras rolling….just run for office.
Darn, you are just so quick lately. Congrats.
GM, it’s a tie Japa21, let’s share
Of course Jindal displays the stoopid by cutting aid to hospice care…..smh
And I was busy on the other thread saying that I’m going to claim 1st on the Rise & Shine – and Chips and cookemom are already busy at it without my knowledge!!!
Congrats cookemom on #1!
I’m like the Mod squad that shadows PBO (secret service detail). I stay right on Chips heels.
And I used to think that was vcprez’s job! 🙂
Oh, Morning, Hopef. I handed off my research notes and the baton; and a worthy successor CookeM has been. 😉 The hand-off has proven less wearying on my knees too, for those occasions like today when CC didn’t show up at the crack of dawn and I had to kneel to give my feet a rest.
Your message to CoreyB made me snicker. Corey B as super hero just ……. On reflection, I’ll say ‘x2’ to your comment and leave it at that today.
Morning Cookemom and Japa and everyone!
I do like hearing about Cory Booker saving a freezing dog. Anytime a dog or a cat is saved is a good story.
I agree, however no need for the cameras or for the footage to be released. It’s becoming more about him than the deed itself.
Good morning, congrats.
Morning all from snowy Chitown
President Barack Obama will announce Denis McDonough as the new White House chief of staff on Friday afternoon, along with a mix of other staff promotions, according to a White House official.
Obama will make the announcement at 12:10 p.m. in the East Room. McDonough, who is currently Obama’s deputy national security adviser, will replace Jack Lew, who the president has tapped to be his Treasury secretary.
In a statement, the official described McDonough as one of Obama’s “closest and most trusted advisors for nearly a decade, dating back to when he helped set up then Senator Barack Obama’s Senator office.” The official also praised McDonough’s role on Obama’s national security team, and his experience in working with Congress:
Denis has played a key role in all of the major national security decisions–from ending the war in Iraq to winding down the war in Afghanistan; from our response to natural disasters in Haiti and Japan; to the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.’ As a veteran of Capitol Hill, Denis understands the importance of reaching across the aisle to make progress for the American people–whether it’s on jobs and economy, health care or education, reducing the deficit or addressing climate change.
Later Friday, the White House will also announce nine aides taking new positions at senior levels at the White House. Here is a breakdown of their new roles:
Rob Nabors – Assistant to the president and deputy white house chief of Staff for Policy
Dan Pfeiffer – Assistant to the president and senior adviser
Jennifer Palmieri – Assistant to the president and communications director
Tony Blinken – Assistant to the president and deputy national security adviser
Danielle Gray – Assistant to the president and cabinet secretary
Katy Kale – Assistant to the president for management and administration
Lisa Monaco – Assistant to the president and deputy national security adviser for homeland security and counterterrorism (upon confirmation of John Brennan as DCIA)
Miguel Rodriguez – Assistant to the president and director of legislative affairs
David Simas – Assistant to the president and deputy senior adviser for communications and strategy

Thanks UT for this info. This looks like an excellent set of appointments. I’m already looking forward to the next 2-4 years with this administration.
Now will Ezra Klein’s wife pen a new column saying that they were wrong – or will they move on to the next issue of poutrage?
Come on. You know the answer to that.
TrumpDog…..Hell No she won’t. We know what that piece of crap Mrs Klein wrote was all about in the first place. It was her and her husband chance to attack the President with lies, and the stupid ass media eat their crap up.
I am loving this!
wow thx UT
Thank you, Utal. It’s so refreshing to me to see the depth of the qualified bench from which our President makes his choices.
Good Morning, Ms Chips! It’s Friday, don’t you know. Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening, TODobots!
Way to go CookeM & Japa!
Thank you VC, got your email, working on it!!!
‘Afternoon’ Chips! /frowning/
ps: No worries. No rush. 😉 😉
Good ol’ boy Saxby Chambliss is retiring.
I think he was worried about a teabagger primary challenge.
Which makes it a possible Dem pickup if we can get a decent candidate. Anybody know the Dem bench in GA?
Kasim Reed, the Mayor of Atlanta, is fantastic, but he may not do well outside of Atlanta.
So long Chambliss, sure won’t miss you.
Gooooooood morning everyone!
Good Morn-ting, All…Lovely Rise and Shine, Chips! The Obama Administration 2.0 looks to be off to a spectacular start!
Have a great day, everybody! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
Good morning TOD, Chips. Way to go cookemom and Japa!!!
g’nite all – have a great day – I’ll venture to sleep to the sound of rain – dripping through the broken tile – sigh – when the rain stops – it might get fixed.
Aw, poor 99ts – keep dry!! And sleep well!
Fantastic announcements by Pres. Obama. I’m waiting for Ezra Klein’s wife Annie Lowrey to issue another round of garbage.
I remember when they ask Rep. Charlie Rangel what he thought of the President’s cabinet and his recent hiring. Rangel call it an embarrassment. It was all negative from Rangel. Just what the media wanted to hear. Then I remember what Rep. John Lewis said when he was ask, he said he know this President, he know he will do the right thing, give him time, he is not through hiring. Was Rangel at the Inauguration?
Seems to me both sides ( L &R) have problems with patience. Everyone is into being first with observations or news regardless if all the facts are out or reviewed.
Happy Very brrr Cold Friday ~ stay warm ya’ll 🙂
Just say I like the look of that wallpaper in the shot of PBO on e phone in the private residence. Not sure we have seen a pic from that desk before? I wonder what is lined up on that desk/table against the wall? See the colorful circles. Morning everyone!
it looks like election pins- the round circles.. I love that desk & clock, first time I’ve seen this room too.
I like the rug and furny and that guy at the desk best of all. I’m not ashamed to admit I got out my magnifying glass to try to figure out that circle thingy board too, did not help. Maybe a task assignment board, who takes Bo out on which days—–or maybe not. 🙂
Update—-think it’s a photo display thingy.
Love the wallpaper, too. He’s made the room very cozy. I have a very similar version of that rug in my apartment.
I am loving the administration’s gun safety strategy. Take it to the people.
Good morning everyone. I don’t know if VC told you, but I got to meet her on Wednesday and we had an awesome dinner before she left D.C.
I also got to meet Theo and her mom. Great, great folks. I wish I could have met more of you all, but maybe another time. 🙂
that’s so cool CK! I’m glad you got to meet one of the TOD gang! 🙂
I was happy to meet you too, young lady. Hang tough as you complete your year! 🙂
Hey, ck, that’s great! I think there will be other opportunities, both there and on the West Coast!!
Glad you were able to meet them. I, for one, was very disappointed that I didn’t get to meet my “Obama niece.” Guess I’ll have to crash your graduation or something… 🙂
Keep them honest UT!
FANTASTIC UT! Now lets see Ms. Lowrey refute THAT.
go UT
UT,
You are a treasure. Your comments and tweets are like delicious morsels to savor throughout the day. And your live blogging is outstanding. Thanks so much for all you do to keep us up-to-date.
LH, I wholeheartedly agree with you about the magnificent work by UT! She is indeed ” a treasure.”
So now Mrs. Klein is trying to chance her lies.
Good Morning TOD family,
Earlier this morning I received an email from Vice President Biden on the subject of gun violence. It is clear that this will be a very difficult process, and it appears that the President’s strategy will be to engage the people rather than negotiate with public officials who are beholden to the NRA and/or fear the accusation of “taking our guns away”.
The only way this will work is for everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, to join in this effort. Only a clear demand by a large majority of each official’s electorate will move this forward.
Here is the conclusion of the VP’s letter which you all may have received:
Right now, President Obama is counting on you.
Each one of us needs to speak up and demand action. It doesn’t matter whether you live in a big city or a small town like Newtown, Connecticut. When our fellow Americans are victims of senseless violence, we all pull together as one American family.
Let’s get this done, folks.
Whether the action we take saves one life or 1,000, it matters.
Thank you,
Joe
She is pitiful, she really is – she refuses to even acknowledge the progress being made on this front. Until it’s 50-50, despite the huge ground that has to be made up because of previous failures to appoint women to positions from which they can be promoted to senior admin roles, she’ll keep on carping.
Exactly Chipsticks. You hit the nail on the head. I pointed out to her that the NYT (which she works for) isn’t exactly diverse gender wise and she came back with well, that’s kinda true but the Obama administration is kinda worse. Umm…no they aren’t. There are women all over State, Defense, Health and Human Services, Interior, EPA etc. that have credible positions and lead policy discussions, debates, and laws. Is it perfect? No. But to pretend that the Obama admin. shuns women, to use an out of context picture and then tarnish the entire administration is gross negligence.
ut, I always heard that people need to sweep around their own back door before they try to sweep around someone else. Mrs. Klein agree with you about the place she works isn’t diverse gender wise. Well what is she doing about that? Where is her article about that? She is just like her know it all husband, a piece of Obama hating crap.
SEE the moving of the goalposts, once their original statement has been swatted down?
Nerdy Wonka (UT) did not even accuse Ms Lowrey of saying that PBO hates women. Nerdy simply asked the rhetorical question of whether she would pen another article about his latest crop of female hires (based on her initial column that PBO’s cabinet lacked diversity with women).
Yet she immediately got defensive by saying that she “didn’t say that he hates women” falsely implying that Nerdy accused her of ever saying that. Anne Lowrey is a fundamentally DISHONEST person.
“Nerdy Wonka (UT) did not even accuse Ms Lowrey of saying that PBO hates women.”
Exactly Hopefruit! When I saw Lowrey’s tweet I looked for where UT had said that – she didn’t! As you said, defensive much?
She’s still smarting from the last go ’round.
Hey UTAL here’s another way to take her on. In general women only hold about 17% of leadership positions in the US across all sectors – business, government, etc.
Instead of complaining that PBO has 30% more men than women, she should be holding him up as a role model. Most sectors have 400% more men than women.
OK my math stinks so I’m not sure I’m right, but if most sectors have 80 men in leadership positions compared to 20 women, I think that’s 4 times as many men or 400%
Shame on her for calling him out when he is an awesome role model!
PS the stat of around 17% is from the White House Project
Thank you Susan – this is the kind of critical thinking that too many current “journalists” LACK. They look at surface figures, fail to analyze the broader context and make a meme based on their petty grievances and grudges.
THX HF…And the electorate suffers as a result. OY!
She’s being super defensive because that’s exactly the meme she wanted to push when she penned that superficial, catty column under the guise of “concern” for diversity in his cabinet. Her agenda backfired and it’s unambiguously clear to the average Joe/Jane that PBO does not hate women, so she’s trying to save face whenever the topic comes up.
You’re right. I was shocked when some of her colleagues called her out on twitter because of her article. They pointed out that she was being hyperbolic and making false assumptions. Twitter was on fire that day. Journalist after journalist kept pointing out in tweets that her premise was false. She and Ezra were really defensive.

A final thought (at least from me) on the filibuster reforms:
Let’s look at how judicial and presidential appointments are going in 6 months.
If there are fewer vacancies than there have been for the last 4 years , we can say with some assurance that the reforms have value.
Thank you Susan!
Let her dig deeper UT. You are making her look more and more like the petty, childish fool that she is.
ooooh, I do love a good tit for tat. Especially, when done with a strong backhand to the noggin of the hard-headed. Hats off to you my dear. I think all debates and differences should be done in 140 characters or less. Imagine, how that would require getting to the point.
Thank you so much, Meta and UT.

You’re awesome UT… happily retweeted!
WORK IT, UT!!
LOL! Work it is right….POW!!!
Exactly. She specifically selected that picture showing Valerie Jarrett’s legs because she WANTED her readers to interpret one way and one way only. She knew EXACTLY how she wanted her column to be interpreted. She’s now trying to feign indifference with that “…it’s up to the reader to interpret…” What hogwash.
Goooooood morrrnnninnnnnng, Chips and TODville. Loving how PBO 2.0 is shaping up.
Mooooooooorning Meta!!!!
I am loving all of the personnel announcements. It was exhilarating to see the announcement of Richard Cordray and Mary Jo White yesterday. And today’s announcements are terrific. All are brilliant and dedicated public servants. President Obama and Vice President Biden have hit the ground running. It looks like they will be pummeling the Republican Party with gun safety, jobs, climate change and immigration reform. I will be waiting for the whining and crying from the GOP that President Obama is trying to do too much too fast. They can either do their part to govern or be left in the dust. PBO and VPB have work to do for the American people.
>>>>>FORWARD>>>>>>
Dow almost 14000…If we get a good jobs report next Friday with no major negative financial news in the interim….hmmm…
Why is she so hung up on the 50-50 breakdown? As Susan indicated, you would hard-pressed to find any major occupational sector besides maybe nursing, early childhood & elementary education, mediocre-wage clerical jobs, and some behavioral science fields where women are on par with or exceed men in representation.
Maybe Ms. Lowrey should look at the gender breakdown of the leadership roles in the TV and print media where both she and her husband work. It doesn’t come CLOSE to the diversity of PBO’s entire administration.
HF totally agree…IMHO no journalist should dare to criticize PBO on this issue unless they work for an org that has done better.
Good Morning Everyone:-)
I am loving the conversation UTA is having with this lying so called journo…I like to ask her.. how many females are working at Washington Post? maybe she can give us some internal data on that? SMDH?

WOWOWOWOWOWWWWW!! Soooo exciting!!
Love it Meta, we have to all visit! 🙂
Yes, we may have to!!
That’s fantastic news Chips……and you are already a part of it.
Ha, I’m going to demand a JoJo statue in the middle of the Plaza! 🙂
Hey Chips! This great news. Tell me, did any spot Cousin Henry at the inauguration? I didn’t.
Hellooooooo Dakota! I didn’t see any photos of him, hopefully we will soon!
Wow…this is excellent! So happy for the people of Moneygall. All this only helps to increase good will towards the US from countries abroad.
Oh Chips, that is so great!!!!!!!!!!! I love those folks in Moneygall.
Isn’t it the sweetest thing Marilyn!
We must have you….right beside him Chips…..I am so thrilled:-) Ireland is where is at!
Ah Kasai, we don’t want to frighten visitors to Moneygall! 🙂
LOL! No such a thing:-) Too much love is displayed here..you have to give us a better excuse…:-)
Okay, here’s a better excuse Kasai – the last statue of me didn’t go too well, I looked way too pensive:
🙂
LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
I don’t care pensive or not…just be there:-)
This is beginning to have the feel of a Masterpiece Theater ensemble series!!
Had to google “SuperMac”, the sponsor of the Barack Obama Plaza. Looks like an Irish version of McDonald’s perhaps? Whatever; I’m thrilled about this happening. PBO’s trip to Ireland produced my fav pics and videos and speeches of his presidency. There’s talk of another trip back to celebrate JFK, right? Maybe this time, the girls will join him and Michelle? Fingers cross! 🙂
Hiya AJ, you’re spot on about SuperMac, an Irish ‘challenger’ to McDonalds, Burger king, etc. Here’s Henry’s reaction:
Obama’s Irish relative Henry Healy says of the announcement: “It’s always fantastic to see a new facility coming to a small community. Again it will enhance and expand on what we have to offer. The museum is an exciting prospect. It will enrich the experience for visitors and hopefully it will entice them to come into the village to visit us when they stop off.”

BOOM. And there you have it. Busted!
LOL! Nerdy Wonked the hell out of Anne…hahahahah!!!
DANG, UT. I/We just can’t thank you enough for talkin’ back to this bullsh–ter. . .
She can be called out again and again. You picked a good one here, UT. thanks.
Agree! Many thanks UT:-)
But she didn’t put the data out there in full. She uses the term underrepresented but doesn’t put it into context. If she is talking in terms of % of women across the entire administration vs the population, let her say so. But that still doesn’t put it into proper context. Proper context would be comparing it to what is the situation in corporate America or prior administrations. Just using a comparison against the US population is disingenuous at best and intentionally misleading at worst. Nor does she make any attempt to discuss quality.
A belated happy anniversary Amk, I hope everything went great!
Thanks Chips. It all went very well. She loved the rocks. Well, back to work today to recoup what the rocks took.
Great to hear Amk, you romantic divil.
LMAO! A twit on twitter for real.
Perfect words. I didn’t bother to read it, but I love calling out journalists. How was your present accepted by the Mrs? Dying to know what it was. I said yesterday I got a beautiful tree. Very valuable in the short grass prairie in WY. But got rubies for 40. Hope she hangs in there for you. Humor is what every woman loves. So work on that. 😉
It was a rock necklace with matching ear hanging thingies. She loved them. (At that price, she better. 🙂 ).
And some lovely dinner to cap off the night.
Sounds nice. She’s a lucky Mrs.
Nah. I am the luckier of the pair. Must have done something right in my previous avatar. 🙂
I saw that. You old softie.
Heh, stop peeping.
I’m glad you’re both happy! 🙂
UT, you are amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank youk, Thank you, Thank you. We must fight back more. I am so concerned about what is happening. I feel with twitter we are getting to msm more than ever. Keep you the great work!!!!!!!
She states they just wanted to put the data out there and let people make their own interpretations. Now she says they just put the data out there hand have the WH and readers respond. If that was the case she would not have been judgemental about the data which she was. In other words, she lies. Oh, and if she wanted a WH response why didn’t she go directly to the source?
She’s now tying herself in knots, Japa.
I love it….a T’war unfolding right before my eyes. You go girl!
I guess I should read it. She sounds thin skinned and I like to get under thin skin. Stay strong ut. I love it.
*and I like to get under thin skin*
Politically speakin’, carolmaewy, this is another reason to love ya!
The feeling is mutual.
🙂
😍
UTAL you are a rock star! Thank you for your push back on Annie Lowrey. Kudos and deep bow of appreciation.
Oh my GOD, ut just sparked off a major righteous Twitter storm with Ms. Lowrey. EVERYONE has now joined in the conversation!!! 🙂 🙂
TOD’s UT representin’!!
Goooooooooooooooooooo UT!!!!!
Congressional Hispanic Caucus attending meeting in the White House today on immigration reform. Let’s get this party started!!
ole!
I notice that I rarely see women making UPS deliveries – should I pen an article about lack of 50-50 gender diversity on the UPS truck? Anyone has a picture of legs of one of those rare female delivery workers so I can post it with my column? Thanks in advance!
Hahahahahahahahaaha. It’s Pres. Obama’s fault.
I also blame Valerie Jarrett, since she likes being “the only woman” in the public eye, under Pres. Obama’s tyranny!
Annie Lowrey couldn’t defend her lies so what did she do? She blocked me on Twitter after admitting that she wrote the article so she could get publicity and revel in the “Obama Hates Women” disgusting. debate it sparked off. This is our media folks. This is our media.
It’s amazing how childish these pseudojournalists can be when confronted with the truth. They are no better than the GOP in mentality. If she is so “delighted” at the conversation, then why did she block you? It’s not like you called her derogatory names or such – you simply presented her with certain facts and refused to allow her to worm her way out of the web of lies she had spun.
UT……wow…what a fierce force you are.
As Stephen Colbert said once: Facts have a Liberal Bias.
Great Job. The Anne Lowery toad blocked you for as today’s Journos are, Facts are Foreign to them.
Thank you UT. You ROCK!
Good morning folks. I don’t know how to twitter yet. Can someone please tell that lady that the President is going through Romney’s binder full of women. He will make appointments from that.
Pat, we HAVE to get you on Twitter!! 🙂
I think I am on there but I don’t know for sure. I will ask my grandaughter or son to show me the next time the come over.
Good Monrning TODers.
Just wanted to give my 2-cents regarding the filibuster reform….
In my opinion, it is often easy for people on the outside to express what they believe should be obvious as to how things should be done. For those on the inside, what is “obvious” is sometimes easier said than done. There may be some history that explains why things are done the way they are and why the participants are hesitant to make change.
Sometimes change has to take place in small steps rather than in one sweeping overhaul. Massive change can sometimes cause more problems rather than fix the ones they were intended to fix. Sometimes even the smartest among us don’t always know what’s best, especially if we have not been directly involved in the process either in the past or currently.
I wondered why Sen. Reid was backing off the major filibuster reform that was being proposed. The article that Bill R referenced in a previous thread (http://pleasecutthecrap.typepad.com/main/2013/01/dont-blame-harry-reid-for-filibuster-reform-thank-him.html) gave an explanation that makes sense to me. Sometimes we have to step away from the “all or nothing” mentality and think beyond the short-term benefits.
Rather than griping about what didn’t happen, we should try to understand the changes that were made. If we don’t think filibuster reform went far enough, think how much worse the process will be if we decide to “show them” and not get out to vote in 2014.
PBO recess appointments 01/04/12 have been ruled unconstitutional by lower court. Ruling is that Congress was not really in recess. This will probably head to the SCOTUS.
I just read that too. How could all the other President’s do it and not be challenged. This is scarey.
Why are you scarey? Have no fear, this will work out just fine. I have no doubt. Keep the faith.
Damn, the GoP will have a field day…
No they won’t. PBO knows what he is doing. And he will win in the end.
Didn’t the same thing happen to GW Bush and the courts rejected it?
What do you want to bet the court who made that decision were Republicans, I could be wrong, but I don’t think so.
I heard that on NPR this morning and wondered if the impeachment crowd would leap on this. It also made me think of the time there was a tricky no recess/recess situation in affect solely for purposes of not allowing PBO to do recess appointments. I think it was something like calling the House to order then dismissing them like a couple minutes later.
Heads up: http://theobamadiary.com/2013/01/25/heads-up-president-obama-makes-a-personnel-announcement-2/
Afternoon, Chips! Love the photo of Denis and PBO at the White House, where Denis is gazing out the window as we’ve seen PBO doing in other photos. They are like kids lookin’ out at the schoolyard, where everybody else gets to play. I really appreciate their contributions to our country and the world.
On a lighter note, I personally appreciate all of the Irish memories and stories here on TOD! When I saw Tipperary in the story on this FP, I was reminded of my old German grandfather who was riding in a car with his Irish brother-in-law in Western Pennsylvania, in the early days of automobiles, and the story goes that they got into a minor fender bender because they were both distracted, singing, “It’s a long way to Tipperary.” So thanks for revvin’ up my own memories! And thanks to Ireland for not forgetting our President!
