I hope everyone (if you can) will do something in honor of MLK/PBO/FLOTUS/ for the National Day of Service. If you can give time but can give some support such as donating to your local homeless shelter. I plan to help at our local homeless shelter collecting/donating diapers and clothes that I no longer wear.

Thank you children for your bravery to speak out on gun violence. You are the beautiful future of the United States of America. Not only is the President, Vice President, your parents and community proud of you, but so am I and a majority of other Americans. My best to you in your future.

CNN: Death Threats Against Obama Increase By 400 Percent

A CNN source with very close to the U.S. Secret Service confirmed to me today that threats on the life of the president of the United States have now risen by as much as 400 percent since his inauguration, 400 percent death threats against Barack Obama — quote — “in this environment” go far beyond anything the Secret Service has seen with any other president.

Really important that everyone viewing this site read the following:

“First, the Second Amendment was written to assure the South that the militia ¾ the very same militia described in the main body of the Constitution could be armed even if Congress elected not to arm them or otherwise attempted to “disarm” them. From our perspective today, this may seem like a small matter since Congress retained exclusive authority to determine the composition of the militia, and, thus, who could enjoy the right to bear arms. However, in the context of the concern and circumstances of the time, it was significant. The Amendment deals with keeping and bearing arms in the militia, subject to federal and state regulation. Therefore, to the extent original intent matters, the hidden history of the Second Amendment strongly supports the collective rights position.

Second, the Second Amendment lives two lives: one in the law and the other in politics, public policy, and popular culture. The hidden history has ramifications in the second realm as well. The Second Amendment takes on an entirely different complexion when instead of being symbolized by a musket in the hands of the minuteman, it is associated with a musket in the hands of the slave holder.”

The floodgates have opened and I am completely useless after watching these four delicious young Americans read their letters to President Obama on gun violence. The only thing thing that is missing from this post is that tissues are required. Seriously, out of the mouthes of babes. I just want to scoop each one of them up in my arms and squeeze them tight. I can barely see the screen right now as the tears roll down my cheeks. The little whippersnapper in the red dress did me in with her reading. I adore these children.

Afternoon all – Yes, nice posts Chips, & I Can See Clearly Now Yardarm! 🙂 I loved the scenery in the video, very beautiful to see during this Chicago winter. Sweet children with common sense is what should be played on TV instead of all the NRA garbage. It would be so much more calming than listening to the opposition. We need to make this world a better, safer, healthier, & wiser planet for this next young generation.
Speaking of winter, they just said Mississippi has had more snow than Chicago, as well as parts of TX. We need the moisture around here!

I can’t shake off this thought: has any inauguration day of the president of the US fallen on MLK day since the holiday was established?. It can’t be coincidental that the first AA president get’s inaugurated on Martin Luther King Jr. day? It might look arbitrary but I sense we are in for a fabulous 4 more years and a phenomenal historical period. During the campaign of 2008, I think the city park ranger asked PBO while he was visiting the site if he is going to be etched in Mount Rushmore and if I remember correctly, he didn’t say no except that there wasn’t enough space for his ears. AMK said there will never be another PBO and I wholly agree. No one can replace Gandhi, MLK, Mandela, Lincoln etc and PBO joins them. Sorry, I am rambling but my heart is skipping and dancing.

Chris Christie Lambastes The NRA For Its ‘Reprehensible’ Anti-Obama Ad

“I’m a father who is a public figure, who has four children. And my children had no choice realistically in what I decided to do with my career and what affect that has had on their lives.”

Christie’s office tweeted out video of the passionate response Thursday evening.

“They’ve got real issues to debate on this topic,” Christie said of the NRA. “Get to the real issues. Don’t be dragging people’s children into this. It’s wrong. And I think it demeans them and makes them less of a valid, trusted source of information on the real issues.”

Christie is the only Republican who has any political sense. The others think they can still win in 2016 by running on hate and to the far right.

Well well well, this is what I am talking about, where is Mitch McConnell, John Boehner, saying disagree with the President all you want about policies, but leave his kids out of it. That goes for the NRA or anyone else. But we have not seen any Republican leaders willing to do that and it has been like that since President Obama became President. But you can bet every dime you have that if the shoe was on the other foot, President Obama would step forward and say leave Speaker Boehner, McConnell kids out of this. I am no fan of Gov. Christie, but I appreciate him saying what he said.

The Labor Department on Thursday issued a new rule meant to avert a repeat of the 2010 West Virginia coal mine explosion that left 29 workers dead.

The regulation, which takes effect on March 25, streamlines the process by which the agency’s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) can crack down on mine operators with patterns of violating health and safety violations.

It comes almost three years after the blast at Massey Energy’s Big Branch mine — the worst mining disaster in 40 years.

“It exacted a terrible toll on the nation, coal miners’ families and coal companies,” outgoing Labor Secretary Hilda Solis said. “The rule we are announcing today will hold mine operators accountable when they disregard life-saving safety measures.”

I’m in an area with weak Internet and while I’ve been able to follow all the great posts lately, commenting was too much for the system. Now I’m waiting in a doctor’s office, so I’ll give it a try. Just want to say, once again, what an extraordinary place and community this is. Thanks for all you do, Chips! You’re one amazing energizer bunny. And thanks to the whole community for this same, humane, loving, thoughtful place. I’ve been so moved by so many comments in the last few days.

Political Junkessa said something that really jumped out at me. I don’t tweet but I recommend it to all tweeters — how staggering it is that we live in a culture where children have to beg adults to protect them from weapons of war.

The children voices are always worth being heard. Now let us make their precious lives remarkable by stepping up to the podiums with their message and let the world know that we heard them, and we are ready to stand with POB and VPBiden to get the work done.HZ

I would suggest half the problem is the poll – and the other half is RWNJs (of the racist variety) looking for all/any reason to think that a black President could not possibly be their reality.

Yes, inside and outside. She said she only has been allotted three minutes for the Invocation. I’m guessing that will be preceded by three minutes of rolling applause from the attendees. This will be such a special moment, among many.

‘Dear Abby’ author Pauline Friedman Phillips dies at 94

The author of widely syndicated advice column Dear Abby has died at 94 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, her publicist has said.

Pauline Friedman Phillips, known for her glib responses to readers, wrote under the name Abigail Van Buren.

The world’s most widely distributed column, it has run in 1,400 newspapers with a daily readership of 100 million.

    (some lol’s from her)

Phillips was known to have a punchy style in her answers to readers’ questions.

Responding to a reader who wanted to trace the reader’s family history without spending much money, Phillips wrote: “Run for public office.”

When another reader asked if the contraceptive pill was “deductible”, she replied: “Only if they don’t work”. (that’s really a hoot)

For decades, Phillips’ column competed with the Ann Landers advice column written by her twin sister Esther Friedman Lederer. Lederer died in 2002.

The sisters, who grew up in Sioux City, Iowa are said to have had a strained relationship as young adults but later regained the closeness they had as children.

Match-fixing revenues comparable to global firms – Interpol

Match-fixing in football today generates “hundreds of billions of euros per year” around the world, the head of Interpol has warned.

Secretary General Ronald Noble said revenues from illegal betting were “on the same scale as a Coca-Cola company”.

He was speaking in Rome at a conference with the world football governing body Fifa on how to deal with the issue.

Both sides talked about the need for education targeting those vulnerable to the pressure of the fixers.

Although football in the North American nation was a very minor sport run by volunteers, even there players were often approached to fix games, he said.

“Match-fixing is clearly a many-headed dragon that we must slay with a co-ordinated national and international effort.”

Echoing Mr Noble’s words, Fifa Secretary General Jerome Valcke stressed that the only way to tackle the issue was from the bottom up, starting with youngsters.

“There is no chance we will change the system without education,” Mr Valcke said.

This is the first time that Interpol and Fifa have combined to organise a forum on the menace of match-fixing, the BBC’s Alan Johnston in Rome reports.

Just want to pop in and say hello. I have been working a lot and have not posted much but I do read every thread. Just a little about South Florida going to see the Inauguration. I have have three groups of people coming up to get winter items as they are paying for Rx. All groups going up to DC for all the festivities. They promised to have pictures when they come back. Also promised to wave at all the cameras so I can see them on the TV. I have everything for Mimosas and have taken OFF Monday.

You have outdone yourself today. The posts are informative and deliciously filled with pics of two of my favorite people in the world. Although some on the right have been condemning PBO for having kids at his presser yesterday, I think it was very appropriate for them to be at the event. It shows that they’re aware of how serious a problem gun violence is, it shows that they have parents who encourage them to get involved in what is going on in our country, and it shows that they care about others. IMO, these are all excellent qualities that any parent would like to see in their kids. I also think some on the right were offended by the kids because their presence didn’t permit them to forget that 20 of the victims at Sandy Hook were kids. With many of them, being able to look at the deaths of 20 kids from an abstract POV allows them to avoid facing the fact that this should never have happened in the first place, and it permits them to continue to live in their RW fantasy land where assault weapons pose no danger to public health.

    • January 17, 2013 at 9:02 pm

Thank you so much Majiir, this …..

“I also think some on the right were offended by the kids because their presence didn’t permit them to forget that 20 of the victims at Sandy Hook were kids.”

…. says it all. 100% spot on. They complained because they shifted uncomfortably through it all, the children there reminded everyone of what PBO’s efforts are, ultimately all about – and they desperately need everyone to forget about the Sandy Hook children.
