Heads up everyone, from 8 pm EST tonight (in 10 minutes) some of the good people on Twitter are asking that you “show your support for sensible gun safety policy” by adding

to your tweets – thank you @gratepool for letting me know.

Do your best!

Okay, still first. I had to log in to wordpress too, because my computer had some problems earlier today. Here is an interesting article about Ornstein and Mann on a Sunday talk show.

What a day for truth telling. “report without fear or favor.”

Hey, journos: find a hook—intransigence on the debt ceiling, gun control, climate change, whatever—but sometime before the Republicans crash the economy, arm third graders, and fry the planet, get this discussion out in the open and, as Ornstein says, “report without fear or favor.”

    Trigger Warning (just in case)

Speaking of Gabby Giffords this made me think of an article I read on military suicides (482 in 2012) but what really stood out for me was that most of them that completed suicide had not even been deployed. So while PTSD is a major issue we have troops killing themselves before they even made it to the battlefield. Also most of them were committed with a gun. This leads me to mental health and gun culture. We have got to start taking depression and anxiety in teenagers seriously because if not treated it will only we get worse. I write this as someone who was recently hospitalized for depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. I haven’t deployed and have only been in the military for 16 months but stress from work (interpersonal conflict) became overwhelming. All of this lead to my meltdown.

Gun control to me is the tip of the iceberg of a very big problem. One that the government can’t solve with one piece of legislation. I want assault weapons off are streets but if most gun-related deaths are done by hanguns then we slightly hit a wall. MENTAL HEALTH MENTAL HEALTH AND MENTAL HEALTH. Teachers need to be trained on the symptoms of depression and anxiety and we have got to take away the shame of getting help. If someone had a broken arm or leg they would rush to the hospital but when someone struggles to get out of the bed for 3 months or can’t eat or sleep they just shake it off. Violent video games and movies is also a bigger problem then we like to acknowledge. If a kid gets bullied at school everyday and then comes home and plays Grand Theft or Call of Duty killing his aggressors would naturally come to mind. Like PBO said “parents have got to turn of the Xbox.”

I could go on and on but I’m going to wrap it up. This a topic that I hold dearly. I’m planning on studying social psychology in the spring.

Jessica, thanks for sharing your personal experience. It could not have been easy to write this. Mental health problems are huge and symptoms often go unobserved and untreated. I’m really glad you’re making progress and are looking forward to a career in social psycho psychology. Good luck. You have a lot to contribute to the discussion and to helping people.

Thank you for sharing, Jessica! This is so important to voice. We need to hear your voice.

    • January 13, 2013 at 11:03 pm

Jessica how powerful you are to share such deep pain! I will pray that you continue to find the strength to continually renew your spirit. It will be an amazing struggle but I hope you can do it. I pray so fervently that you will be blessed. Wrap yourself in the love and support of anyone who is available to you. Good Luck!

I live daily with a 17 yr old special needs, Aspergers great-granddaughter who is depressed and suicidal but really should have been diagnosed much earlier. We never understood the danger she was in. Seeing it up close makes me know we have to work much harder to get them the help they need and are entitled to receive.

I am so tired of the media loving to tell us how many people are out there buying guns, it seem like everyday there is a story on the news about that very thing. It would be nice to show the people who is not rushing out there buying guns.

Hi, Chips… I don’t tweet or hashtag… But I already joined Gabby’s & Mark’s group. Thanks for putting this out. Can’t help being an old fart!

Nice to hear Colin Powell talk straight, BTW.

      I love it!!!! 😛

And THIS is what chills the bones of the racists, neo-cons, and other regressives: the children seeing this good, kind, strong leader who happens to be a black man.

Too bad — it’s too late. The world is forever changed….for the better.

Well said PJ! The majority of us in the United States should be forever proud of what we did, not just for the United States, but for the future of the entire world. The “mis-measure” of humans on the basis of color and the totally false concept of race, was dealt a major blow in both 2008 and 2012. Children of color will from now on grow up knowing that it’s possible for them to aspire to the highest office in the land. And, even more significant, today’s children of all races (except those who may be currently poisoned by racist haters), who will be tomorrow’s adults, will have no problem respecting a President of any color. Thankfully, other countries already set examples of electing women leaders. By the way, that includes muslim countries like Pakistan.

Okay, this is WAAAAAYYY off topic here, but I have to share it under the category of “All things bright and beautiful…..” my daughter in law just sent us a picture of our six year old, first grade grandson reading a book to his cat who is on his lap. He is very serious, too. How to thrill a grandma and grandpa, this is how.

A New Hampshire lawyer who works with a virulently anti-gay Christian-right organization has been found guilty of child pornography charges after videotaping her own daughter having sex with two men on multiple occasions.

Lisa Biron, 43, of Manchester faces a minimum sentence of 25 years in prison after a jury convicted her yesterday. The jury deliberated for less than an hour.

Biron, arrested by the FBI last November, was accused of eight felony counts involving the videotaping of men having sex with a 14-year-old girl who was identified by the Associated Press as her daughter. She also allegedly made a cellphone video of herself having sex with her daughter.

Biron, who claimed on her Facebook page (which was taken down, according to the Concord Monitor) that the Bible was her favorite book, had worked with Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), formerly the Alliance Defense Fund, in defending a Pentecostal church in Concord in a tax fight against the city.
