Other than the raising of taxes on the rich, can someone remind me what Bill Clinton did for us? Sure, he presided over great economic prosperity, but he left us with the Telecom Bill (let’s start mental health screening based on the paranoia and lies over our air waves), Repeal of Glass-Steagall, banking deregulation that led to the economic collapse, ‘welfare’ reform, DADT (although historically this wasn’t as awful as we see it today), and—– wait for it——-

It was supposed to have started with GW Bush. Honestly, I was looking forward to the expiration of GW Bush’s protection. The TBGOPers pushed for it in 1999. Clinton signed it. But it also had an increase in pap for POTUS….future…. from $250K or so to $400K. GW was the 1st with $400K. That also increased the VP pay too and it also had a 6 month SS protection for VP. Cheney asked for an extension. Pres Obama OK’ed it even though, Cheney started ripping pres Obama with his rants on Jan 29, 2009.
Notice, it was TX GOPers who pushed for the reinstate of this SS protection….because of GW Bush. Had it been Al Gore, they would not have.
Hello TOD. I am so grateful for this bill. I knew it was shortened after Clinton, and all I could foresee is PBO, after ten years, having to have made a lot of money to afford the lifetime of protection his actual act of “thinking” he could be president would require. There are those who were just waiting for him to have any decrease in protection, as they will never, ever forgive him for his daring act of becoming COC in the first place. Whew, didn’t mean to comment so long-winded, but his life will ALWAYS be in danger in Amerikkka ! And ALWAYS, he and his family will be in my prayers…. for as long as I live.

I find those web ads so annoying. I made the mistake of checking out bathtubs on line about a month or so ago, so now even though I have already bought a tub and had it installed every time I am online one or two dance off to the side. I have tried to ignore them, so now they pop up at the top. 🙄

What’s interesting about my lovely state is that redistricting is done by a citizen’s commission. The idea was to make districts more competitive. And guess what? When presented between ideas of Dems and GOPers, Dems win most of the time. We got a 2/3 majority in the Legislature, and we picked up seats in the Congressional delegation.
Well, it’s enough to make me want to move to CA. We’re torn between a daughter on the east coast with a new grandbaby and a son
in California. Some days it could go either way.

I used to listen to NPR and WQXR occasionally in NYC up until their newsprograms were sponsored by Bloomberg. Bloomberg also has great influence, perhaps part ownership, in the NYTimes. Bloomberg View Business Week Washington Post—who knows how many more platforms.

I am so grateful, as well – and I think the whole world appreciates his efforts (especially his early efforts, when his team was being obstructed by the GOP from formation and he was doing much of the work without a team)! Seeing Tim Geithner leaving, and the ridiculousness of the media over this diversity hoopla, makes me wonder just why the media thinks people would be clamouring to join a team that just does not get the respect and gratitude it deserves? We are lucky that President Obama signed up (and won) a second term. We’re lucky that Jack Lew is willing to continue to serve. We’re lucky that the entire team that is staying on, and the ones who are joining, are willing to serve. They serve at great cost to themselves. And they serve a portion of the population that is completely undeserving of their incredible talents – although, a majority of the country really does understand how remarkable they are to step up at this time.
We are so LUCKY as a nation to have a competent President who has surrounded himself and put people in his administration who are smart, hardworking, and have done an excellent job for all americans.

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama signed legislation giving himself and former President George W. Bush lifetime Secret Service protection Thursday, reversing a mid-1990s law which would have capped protection at 10 years from leaving office.
The bill, the Former Presidents Protection Act of 2012, removes the cap, granting all president’s lifetime protection by the Secret Service, their spouses unless they remarry, and their children until the age of 16.
The bill was introduced in the House of Representatives in November 2012 by South Carolina Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy, and passed by voice-vote in early December. Co-sponsors included Republican Rep. Lamar Smith, and Democrats Rep. John Conyers and Bobby Scott. The Senate passed the bill by unanimous consent on December 28th, and sent over to the White House on New Years Day.
“Both men are young, enjoy good health, and have long lives ahead of them post-Presidency,” Gowdy said on the House floor. “This bill proposes to extend that security for the remainder of their lives.
That was my first thought. They were preparing for their beloved Willard, and then they thought they’d be able to change the laws sufficiently that a Democrat would never be able to get elected President ever again… If I’m wrong, then so be it. I’m grateful that this law was passed, regardless.

I truly admire and respect all of you who still watch cable news channels! For the sake of my health, both physical and mental, I no longer watch any of them. I did poke in once to see Rev. Al, but some of his guests completely turned me off. I enjoy reading newspapers (old school, I guess) but the msm papers are increasingly just as revolting as the electronic media. My car radio is permanently tuned to our Jazz channel. I completely stopped listening to talk radio in 2009!
the owners of all the major american media have been a crusade to keep president obama down as much as possible ever since he won in 2008. they, and by extension all their employees such as chuck todd, andrea greenspan, etc., know how dangerous he is to their “trickle-down” schemes, and were freaked out by how well president obama can fire up “we, the people.” this latest nonsense is such a clear example of their game. if we had actual journalism from the major media, and the public was presented just simple facts instead of the constant anti-obama propaganda, i’m convinced they’d already be prepping mount rushmore for the new addition, considering how president obama thwarted another great depression, ended 2 wars, and all the other great things. the media has certainly diminished president obama’s support somewhat, but i’m hopeful we can get him the House in 2014, and he’ll be able to improve things so much, that the mount rushmore addition will happen even with the media owners trying to bring him down regardless. forward to 2014!!!

Even Richard Nixon was not this disrespected at the height of the Watergate scandal. I know we have crazies in the Republican party, but these crazies would be no where if we had an honest media.

Isonprize, when coming across a picture, right click on it. If there is a “save as” option select that and name your file it becomes a .jpeg. Make sure you dont do it on a large/small version, just the normal picture. The when creating a tweet, look in the bottom left corner, you will see a camera icon. Click on the icon and it will automatically bring up your wallpaper/ “save as” files. Click,hit open, and it turns it into a twitpic. Leave at least 15-20 characters in your tweet for the twitpic. If you do it successfully, you will see an icon of the picture where the camera was in the bottom left corner of your tweet. I have to go to get my passport, but if you need help later this afternoon, I will be glad to walk you through it.
I was in a hurry earlier, If you are asking about how to get a picture to show up from someone else’s tweet, you click Expand on the bottom of the tweet. Second click on Details. Finally copy/paste the URL and post.
If you are attempting to create your own tweet, based on the guidance above, just make sure when you click on “save picture as” you pay attention to which folder its going into. Sometimes it may go to C:/…..downloads sometimes C:/…..pictures or whatever your computer is configured too. Hope that helps!

I don’t know what to make of Nia. I don’t get her at all. I’m glad the sister has “made it”, so to speak. But made it to what, exactly? With all the issues that we are facing, the MSM chooses to focus on superfluous things, much of which is not based in fact.
The country is still in the process of a financial recovery. Our tax laws give an unfair advantage to the wealthiest among us and make it hard for the rest of us to move up the economic ladder. Our children are being slain by weapons that should not even be in the hands of ordinary citizens. People are still unemployed. Our education system needs improvement. Our healthcare system is being attacked by corporations and Republican led state governments. Our climate needs to be addressed. And even though there are those who seem to try to ignore it, we do have citizens who are homeless and are living in poverty. And we have a Congress, as Jon Stewart says, who is making it hard to resolve these issues.
And what is the MSM focusing on?
President Obama has a deficit of women in his administration….REALLY?
Jack Lew has an illegible signature….REALLY?
Some “has-been” politicians (e.g., McGrampy, Sister Lindsey, etc.) who are only trying to hang on to their perceived importance have [bogus] concerns about the President’s choices for cabinet positions…REALLY?
Oh…and let the MSM continue to lie about what the President is or isn’t doing?
The sad thing is that everyone seems to be on the band wagon. From one network to the next, you hear the same refrain. If there is anyone in the MSM who is willing to be factual, and truthful, and focus on what is really important, they are apparently being muzzled by the powers that be.

Article I of the U.S. Constitution is all about Congress. Besides setting up the structure/nature of Congress (Senate and House of Representatives), it also enumerates the powers and responsibilities of Congress. Sections 7 and 8 of Article I focus on the responsibilities of Congress. Two of those responsibilities, which are germane to raising the debt ceiling, are:
1. Congress shall have the power …to pay the debts of the United States,
2. Congress shall have the power to borrow money on the credit of the United States.
Article II, which is all about the Executive branch of the government headed by the President, say absolutely nothing, zilch, about the President being responsible for borrowing money or paying the debts of the United States.
Without the laws enacted by Congress:
1. To lay and correct taxes, duties, imposts and excises
2. To provide for the common defense
3. To provide for the general welfare of the United States
The President could not have single handedly incurred the debt of the United States that now requires Congress to raise the Debt Ceiling. The debt was incurred as a result of laws and actions taken by the Congress.
You are absolutely right Tally. Members of Congress, like Lindsey Graham, who think that raising the Debt Ceiling to pay for the debt already incurred equals giving a “Blank Check” to President Obama, are “Too Stupid To Be In Congress.” Even more importantly, they are violating their oath of office to defend and support the Constitution.

Cheney asked for an extension. Pres Obama OK’ed it even though, Cheney started ripping pres Obama with his rants on Jan 29, 2009.
Notice, it was TX GOPers who pushed for the reinstate of this SS protection….because of GW Bush. Had it been Al Gore, they would not have.

What’s interesting about my lovely state is that redistricting is done by a citizen’s commission. The idea was to make districts more competitive. And guess what? When presented between ideas of Dems and GOPers, Dems win most of the time. We got a 2/3 majority in the Legislature, and we picked up seats in the Congressional delegation.

Seeing Tim Geithner leaving, and the ridiculousness of the media over this diversity hoopla, makes me wonder just why the media thinks people would be clamouring to join a team that just does not get the respect and gratitude it deserves? We are lucky that President Obama signed up (and won) a second term. We’re lucky that Jack Lew is willing to continue to serve. We’re lucky that the entire team that is staying on, and the ones who are joining, are willing to serve. They serve at great cost to themselves. And they serve a portion of the population that is completely undeserving of their incredible talents – although, a majority of the country really does understand how remarkable they are to step up at this time.

The crazier they get, the more likely their rights WILL be taken away from them, because they’ll be endangering society. I don’t want to get caught up in a hail of bullets, simply because I want health care or the right to grow old.
Just made my day this a.m. on the morning news: Walsh is ‘exploring’ statewide office by going around the state to assess his chances. I so wanted to never see nor hear from this jackass ever again.
I am sure there is some rural rwnj area he can move to and challenge another rw’er.

It’s been my experience that people who talk loudly about shedding blood are the first one to run when the actual shooting begins. If Walsh wanted to ‘preserve our freedom,’ through shedding blood, how come he never volunteered to serve in the military? In my book, people like Joe Walsh, Glen Beck, Rush Limbaugh, are nothing but loud mouths cowards.They talk a good game, but they are no where to be found when it comes to action.
the silliness of what passes for discourse on the left is driving me crazy. I dipped a toe back into twitter after not being there for days. No, you loons, you may like Paul Krugman’s progressive ideas but he is UNQUALIFIED to run an agency with ZERO administrative experience and the political acumen of my bichon frise.
Would I love Jennifer Granholm as Labor Secretary? Sure! Gee, in case you idiots didn’t notice, POTUS, particularly PBO, cannot just appoint someone. She has as much chance of getting confirmed as – well – the aforementioned bichon frise.

I can see that….I saw the clip of the bully Scarborough on mediaite earlier because I don’t watch that show but there was such a buzz on twitter about it………so disrespectful, snapping his fingers at Mika, yelling…… but soooo concerned about the lack of diversity in the new cabinet.
I had MSNBC on earlier, waiting for the President……it was painful to listen to Mitchell and her stupid guests. …….sick and tired of this fake outrage but I know it’s going to be like this every day for the next 4 years.
I’ve been working from home this morning – had to mute the tv during that fiasco. Heading to work now, to avoid any more MSNBC.
I truly admire and respect all of you who still watch cable news channels! For the sake of my health, both physical and mental, I no longer watch any of them. I did poke in once to see Rev. Al, but some of his guests completely turned me off. I enjoy reading newspapers (old school, I guess) but the msm papers are increasingly just as revolting as the electronic media. My car radio is permanently tuned to our Jazz channel. I completely stopped listening to talk radio in 2009!
the owners of all the major american media have been a crusade to keep president obama down as much as possible ever since he won in 2008. they, and by extension all their employees such as chuck todd, andrea greenspan, etc., know how dangerous he is to their “trickle-down” schemes, and were freaked out by how well president obama can fire up “we, the people.” this latest nonsense is such a clear example of their game. if we had actual journalism from the major media, and the public was presented just simple facts instead of the constant anti-obama propaganda, i’m convinced they’d already be prepping mount rushmore for the new addition, considering how president obama thwarted another great depression, ended 2 wars, and all the other great things. the media has certainly diminished president obama’s support somewhat, but i’m hopeful we can get him the House in 2014, and he’ll be able to improve things so much, that the mount rushmore addition will happen even with the media owners trying to bring him down regardless. forward to 2014!!!

That was an excellent article, Yardarm! Thank you for sharing it. For an older man like me, the way mainstream media treats and disrespects President Obama is unparalleled! Even Richard Nixon was not this disrespected at the height of the Watergate scandal. I know we have crazies in the Republican party, but these crazies would be no where if we had an honest media.
In my humble opinion, I think it’s time for a sustained media boycott. I just can’t think of another effective tactic to communicate to them our disgust at how they are enabling the crazies in the GOP to destroy the country.
The only options are pressure on their sponsors, twitter and other social media.

Do only twitpics show up here in wordpress? There is a “yfrog” picture of the all male, all white GOP stenographers who pose as the White House press corp. I wanted the whole tweet w. the picture to show up, but everytime I try, only the tweet shows up…
Isonprize, when coming across a picture, right click on it. If there is a “save as” option select that and name your file it becomes a .jpeg. Make sure you dont do it on a large/small version, just the normal picture. The when creating a tweet, look in the bottom left corner, you will see a camera icon. Click on the icon and it will automatically bring up your wallpaper/ “save as” files. Click,hit open, and it turns it into a twitpic. Leave at least 15-20 characters in your tweet for the twitpic. If you do it successfully, you will see an icon of the picture where the camera was in the bottom left corner of your tweet. I have to go to get my passport, but if you need help later this afternoon, I will be glad to walk you through it.
I was in a hurry earlier, If you are asking about how to get a picture to show up from someone else’s tweet, you click Expand on the bottom of the tweet. Second click on Details. Finally copy/paste the URL and post.
If you are attempting to create your own tweet, based on the guidance above, just make sure when you click on “save picture as” you pay attention to which folder its going into. Sometimes it may go to C:/…..downloads sometimes C:/…..pictures or whatever your computer is configured too. Hope that helps!

And there’s Nia Malika Henderson piling on, unsurprisingly—–saying it was very concerning about the “dearth of women”. This has reached the beyond ridiculous stage.
I don’t know what to make of Nia. I don’t get her at all. I’m glad the sister has “made it”, so to speak. But made it to what, exactly? She seems constrained to me, guided and controlled by an invisible hand. I guess everyone can’t be Joy Reid. But, I wish I detected more substance and strength of conviction in Nia.
Karen Finney drives me nuts because she talks too much, IMHO. But at least she seems real, has a core, all that. Nia, not so much.
I believe Nia is a Repub. She is always negative when it pertains to Pres. Obama and she always refers to him as “Obama.” I don’t like her politics or her punditry.

For me, because I mainly read papers, the most infuriating is the NYT columnist, Bob Hebert. Eugene Robinson is two-faced. Sometimes he is good and and sometimes he joins the media group think. Good Afternoon to everyone in TOD land. With all the silliness going on, I felt compelled to come out of lurking to comment.
With all the issues that we are facing, the MSM chooses to focus on superfluous things, much of which is not based in fact.
The country is still in the process of a financial recovery. Our tax laws give an unfair advantage to the wealthiest among us and make it hard for the rest of us to move up the economic ladder. Our children are being slain by weapons that should not even be in the hands of ordinary citizens. People are still unemployed. Our education system needs improvement. Our healthcare system is being attacked by corporations and Republican led state governments. Our climate needs to be addressed. And even though there are those who seem to try to ignore it, we do have citizens who are homeless and are living in poverty. And we have a Congress, as Jon Stewart says, who is making it hard to resolve these issues.
And what is the MSM focusing on?
President Obama has a deficit of women in his administration….REALLY?
Jack Lew has an illegible signature….REALLY?
Some “has-been” politicians (e.g., McGrampy, Sister Lindsey, etc.) who are only trying to hang on to their perceived importance have [bogus] concerns about the President’s choices for cabinet positions…REALLY?
Oh…and let the MSM continue to lie about what the President is or isn’t doing?
The sad thing is that everyone seems to be on the band wagon. From one network to the next, you hear the same refrain. If there is anyone in the MSM who is willing to be factual, and truthful, and focus on what is really important, they are apparently being muzzled by the powers that be.

Article I of the U.S. Constitution is all about Congress. Besides setting up the structure/nature of Congress (Senate and House of Representatives), it also enumerates the powers and responsibilities of Congress. Sections 7 and 8 of Article I focus on the responsibilities of Congress. Two of those responsibilities, which are germane to raising the debt ceiling, are:
1. Congress shall have the power …to pay the debts of the United States,
2. Congress shall have the power to borrow money on the credit of the United States.
Article II, which is all about the Executive branch of the government headed by the President, say absolutely nothing, zilch, about the President being responsible for borrowing money or paying the debts of the United States.
Without the laws enacted by Congress:
1. To lay and correct taxes, duties, imposts and excises
2. To provide for the common defense
3. To provide for the general welfare of the United States
The President could not have single handedly incurred the debt of the United States that now requires Congress to raise the Debt Ceiling. The debt was incurred as a result of laws and actions taken by the Congress.
You are absolutely right Tally. Members of Congress, like Lindsey Graham, who think that raising the Debt Ceiling to pay for the debt already incurred equals giving a “Blank Check” to President Obama, are “Too Stupid To Be In Congress.” Even more importantly, they are violating their oath of office to defend and support the Constitution.
I honestly think they’re doing it on purpose to provoke POTUS into bypassing them and then trying to impeach him for it.
