Congrats on first Bob! Happy New Years Eve to all! I am on my way to work and will miss the statement but, like me he is tired of all the rumors and tweets saying he caved when he did NOT! I have called my reps and Senators. On hold for over 40 minutes to the tan man and had to hang up. Bob…hit the media on their fail again! I un-followed quite a few today.

I will be back at ten then toasts with my family. I don’t know if I will be able to type after that. I am using my hubby’s net book because my laptop needs repair.

Why not let Bush tax cuts expire? 5 mins. after midnight U.S. government can print/send unemployment checks. Also if the Republicans don’t mess with the middle class tax cuts, can we give a little on their tax hike? Can these be possible last minute solutions?

I don’t care what nobody says, she is solid! Not one person can link to anything she’s said today or any day that casts any doubt on her allegiance. She’s asking questions of her guests in her capacity as a fill-in talk show hostess.

Well I’m providing TWO links to stuff she posted on Twitter along the same lines: Any talk of DEMS “caving” is just plain counterproductive in my opinion.

          December 31, 2012 at 4:22 pm

Hopefruit you could probably find a link to something Michelle said about PBO that you’d find offensive. I don’t think there’s a soul alive who can pass your standards when it comes to PBO. That ain’t all bad, but realistically folks are allowed to be supportive and opinionated at the same time. I guess I have a different level of tolerance, it’s all good though.

          • 39 hopefruit2
            December 31, 2012 at 4:40 pm

Sorry cookemom but I see strawman arguments in your comment.

Ms. Reid is using the EXACT rhetoric – demeaning and inflammatory rhetoric that is specifically and exclusively reserved for PBO and Democrats whenever negotiations on ANY legislation is taking place. I (and many others) have condemned firebaggers, emoprogs for using that kind of language about “Dems Caving.”
So your bringing up of all kinds of irrelevancies about “my standards” is simply a distraction from the issue at hand.

Happy New Year hopefruit! I don’t do strawmen or snowmen. I don’t entertain the negative and I don’t really care about who says what about what was said about who. I don’t cyber-argue, nor do I spend time (especially as I welcome in the new year), resurrecting old dead horses only to continue to beat them over and over and over and over and over again. So I made a comment that I felt Joy was solid. She is in my book, in your book…. perhaps maybe not so much.

I’ve yet to read a post from you about anyone who meets your standards. Big deal, I was only to try and point out that it is not surprising that you would have found a link to show what a emoprog she really is. We differ, will most likely continue to differ on this, but it’s still all good. I’m just not that invested in proving points is all. I gladly concede the last word on this topic to you. Gotta get back to my dancing.

                Happy New Year Cookemom!

My bottom line: If someone behaves like an emoprog, I will treat them as such. If Michelle Obama starts tweeting in public forums that PBO is caving to Repubs, gives away the store, needs to grow a pair…I will dub her an emoprog.

              December 31, 2012 at 5:29 pm

For what it’s worth Hopefruit, I completely get and fully support your stance…

This idea that we continue to settle for and deem acceptable, the persistent negative narratives that have not only crept in, but seem to have stuck – and become acceptable – and now largely and unquestionably tossed about whenever events triggered by the GOP, but facilitated by President Obama in his capacity as President arise…

As impressive as Joy Reid has been in her role as pundit, she won’t be the first to straddle the fine line of President Obama and Democrats as the convenient and easy target of her effort to impress her bosses to keep her gig…

‘Opinions’ are all well and good, but not when they are disingenuous, gratuitous and feed into a dangerous meme that essentially perpetuates a lie that diminishes a very hardworking President and absolves the very obstructionists and their enablers who effectively hamper progress…

Again for all the ‘oh gee lighten up, people have opinions’, I bet there would be quite the outcry if these ‘opinions’ were ever made about oh say certain other well-marketed people in politics…

Drama is all the Repubs have. They’re all play acting at doing what’s right for the country, so it’s par for the course.

No Drama Obama is happily winning, while Repubs are behind the curtain, changing out of their clown costumes so they can join Boehner at the club tonight.

He said even if there’s a deal today if the Republicans think they’re going to shove more spending cuts down…then he stopped himself…if the Republicans think they’re going to shove more cuts, they’ve got another think coming.

Every cut has to be balanced with revenue. Period. That’s his bottom line.

My smilies are there re: my screen name. NOT the content of the video!!

The content of that video reminds us how far we have come and how far we have to go.

On the last day of 2012, it is VERY hard to watch that video. But watch it we must, because if we aren’t careful, there are elements of this country that appear to be more than happy to send up back to that hateful time in America.

I mean, really, Gov. Corbett, in PENNSYLVANIA, kicked poor children of all ethnicities, CHILDREN, off of Medicare. It’s not a firehose, but it’s just as cruel.

πŸ™‚ You’ve got the right way of thinking!

          • December 31, 2012 at 6:06 pm

I posted the video because I wanted to remind myself of some of the terrible things people in this country have overcome in my lifetime. When I read these folks that want it all right now, and I see how the people fought and strove for every tiny step forward – the right to sit at a lunch counter! – how they got what they could but never gave up pressing for what should be theirs, it makes me want to smack someone. And I’m not really much of a smacker usually. But I also see that and realize what a short time it was between those pictures and our beautiful President’s reelection. You’re exactly right; we’ve come a long way, and we have a long way to go.

Ok, which lazy gasbag pundit, do nothing GOP member of congress or rwnj will be the first to say that President Obama has poisoned the well by speaking so frankly about where we are and how we got here? Meanwhile, the GOP can disrespect PBO and call him every name in the book without a peep from the media. They obstruct, delay, filibuster, and sabotage everything he has tried to do for the country. But the moment that President Obama tells the American people “A BIT OF TRUTH” the GOP gets their feelings hurt. Oh the horror. Did you hear what he said? They can dish it but they can’t take it.

Booman has a good take on what is happening:

The floated deal provides a LOT that we would not otherwise get, yet I am still not sure that the White House expects it to pass, and a big part of Obama’s appearance this afternoon was about making the Republicans look especially bad and petty if they do not agree to a deal. Basically, the president said that a deal was almost done and that their were only minor, insignificant things left to resolve. He taunted Congress, calling them totally ineffectual and openly laughing at them. This led, inevitably, to a bunch of butt-hurt tweets from Republicans and Republican aides about how Obama was “moving the goalposts” and trying to “sabotage a deal.” Yes, getting them to write those tweets was part of the plan to maximize how bad the GOP will look if they don’t agree to a deal.

In other words, the president promised more than had been agreed to and dared the Republicans to blow up the talks. He can live with the deal he outlined, but he can live without it, too.

    By Steve Benen

Perhaps the most noteworthy thing about the brief remarks was the Republican apoplexy that followed. Apparently, the president’s tone hurt GOP lawmakers’ feelings — so much so that many Republicans are now arguing that a fiscal agreement mail fail because Obama made them feel bad.

Seriously. That’s what they’re saying. Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) said on the Senate floor that the president’s tone represented “heckling,” and as a consequence, he “lost some votes” for a compromise deal. Soon after, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) also said Obama was too mean and made Congress feel bad.

Just when you thought watching Congress couldn’t be any more painful, lawmakers find a way to make the institution look a little worse.

So tired of so many pricks tellin’ us to go off the cliff…like it’s some goddamn ride at Disney Land.

Let’s admit, folks, a great deal of the left would rather score political points than help out their fellow man. They say, “don’t worry, we’ll work things out at the beginning of the year…” just as they say, “YOU CAN’T TRUST REPUBLICANS!” So, all of the sudden, with no deadline, we should automatically believe the Republicans will have America’s best interests at heart and do everything Obama wants – from tax increases to unemployment benefits to other spending. Remarkable.

I still don’t think a deal gets done, unfortunately, because the one Obama is floating is very one-sided – and it isn’t on the conservative side, IMO. I don’t see how it passes the House – but if it does, Obama will have pulled off a fantastic magic trick and should be applauded by progressives from keeping the economy tanking and getting a majority of his tax increases.

    • December 31, 2012 at 3:30 pm

I understand your concerns. And a deal will be done. But the thing is, Apocalypse doesn’t take hold at midnight. The cuts don’t all take effect at the stroke of the clock. So there’s even time after the “cliff” for a deal to be done. Stay calm, carry on, and bhliain nua sΓ‘sta!

      • December 31, 2012 at 4:27 pm

I think we’ll get a deal, but it’s not like the Republicans are magically going to become better compromisers after we go over the cliff.

LL, the people truly at risk are those two million on UI who don’t have the luxury of waiting a couple of weeks or a month for a paycheck. If only that fix could be addressed, everything else could take longer. A small increase in taxes is nothing compared to the plight of the unemployed who often have no other sources of income. These are the people currently living in fear that tomorrow will bring them a very bleak new year.

        • December 31, 2012 at 4:47 pm

Of course, the GOP cares nothing for these folks. The next 2 years will produce nothing legislatively. We have to work as hard for 2014 as we did for 2012. Nov. 6 was just one battle. The war continues until the GOP is broken and unable to do any more damage.

I guess Republican whiners in Congress don’t remember what happened when Newt Gingrich complained about his seat in Air Force 1 during the budget showdown with Clinton:

Gingrich was widely lampooned for implying that the government shutdown was a result of his personal grievances, including a widely-shared editorial cartoon depicting him as a baby throwing a tantrum. Democratic leaders, including Chuck Schumer, took the opportunity to attack Gingrich’s motives for the budget standoff. In 1998, Gingrich said that these comments were his “single most avoidable mistake” as Speaker.

President Obama is the first person in history, from either party, to get Grover Norquist to break his own tax pledge. That is a huge victory.

The fact that Grover is now on record for supporting Plan B–a tax on millionaires–is monumental. Now future Republicans can say ‘well even Grover broke his own pledge’ the next time he threatens them.

In their never-ending quest to find betrayals, some ‘progressives’ completely miss the astounding victories of this President.

Well, they got it from the horse’s mouth:

A notice from the House Majority Whip’s office indicates Republicans have no plans to hold a vote on any Senate-passed legislation to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff.

“There will be a Special GOP Conference Meeting at 5:00 p.m. in HC-5,” according to the alert. “Immediately following Conference tonight, roughly 5:30-6:00 p.m. we will have our first and only vote series of the day on suspensions.”

To translate, the House is only planning to vote on a handful of scheduled, non-controversial measures this evening. They plan to leave tonight whether or not the Senate passes a bill to avoid the expiration of the Bush tax cuts at midnight.

      • December 31, 2012 at 5:05 pm

4 years into Pres. Obama’s presidency we have had far too many unfortunate occasions to see the vile bankruptcy of the noisemaking Emotional/Professional Left play out over and over again. But nowhere has this kneejerk tendency to second-guess or downright racist thrash the President been taken to more absurd levels than this year-end macabre spectacle we’re seeing unfold vis-avis the fiscal cliff.

Yeah yeah I know, Dailykos always sucks. But today it was an orchestra of Left blowhards from the entire left media — print, online and blogsites, that sank to their ready racist playbook of hurling personal insults at the competence & humanity of this President.

It is so predictable it makes me literally sick. But today it cut me even more especially when you realize that this President has gone this entire year without a vacation just so he’d fight indefatigably for the thankless job of leading this country. And fight he did with so much heart and administrative brilliance that left these same left blowhards speechless.

To see Dailykos go from diary upon diary waxing poetic about Obama’s unbelievable win and the superlative skills of his campaign crew, and on and on and on to the vitriol today is whiplash-inducing. Just last week they finally came around to seeing the strategic brilliance of Pres. Obama’s 2011 debt ceiling negotiations. Kos himself keeps churning out article after article about one mind-blowing angle of the elections and campaign after the other.

But today, there could be no more bumbling idiot, traitor to the American Middle Class/poor than this same President. From Jonathan Chait to Ezra Klein to Jed Lewison, Slinkerwink, BrooklynBadBoy, PM Carpenter, Kevin Drum et al. How could both statements be true? Of course not. What we are seeing once again is the fundamental bigotry of the Professional Left to ever see this President as anything other than their janitor and at worse, their slave. yes I used that label because that is the perfect description of their downright disrespect for him.

They never demean Clinton who actually BETRAYED their very core policies, in the same way. Naw… he’s a hero, but Barack Hussein Obama? He’s at best a bumbling fool who’s hellbent on delivering the head of America’s 99% to his Wall Street cronies. And at worst he’s supposed to be an evil traitor and insulted in the most racist terms.

You know, if I were President Obama, I’d quit, take my family very far away from this godforsaken country. But I’m not him. He’s a bigger person than I am. His sense of mission is nobler than I will ever summon. So all I can do is defend him anyway anyhow, and wherever. I have been deleting followers like flies from my Twitter Timeline. I can’t stand it

    Yeah…As Ryan Lizza sums the whiplashing Left’s behavior within minutes, in a tweet;

Zizi, DKos needs money. I believe the word went out that trashing PBO was the way to raise cash. They’ll find out soon enough that Hannity’s fate awaits them–people will start leaving in droves. Why they think the world needs another hate site is beyond me, but they must have brought out their little calculator and figured it would attract advertisers. Frankly, I don’t care what happens to them, although going down in flames would be nice.

I said ‘fuck em’ to dkos long ago.. they ARE a mess of dysfunction and yep racists & whackadoos. Heres a very good thing to keep in mind: Senator Obama diaried twice on dkos.. and then he didn’t come back- I believe he had their number from the get go & gave them a chance.. an opportunity. They failed. He didn’t πŸ˜‰

PM Carpenter? Really? God, that’s disappointing in the extreme. The others I expect it from, but he always seemed like he knew what PBO was doing.

      • December 31, 2012 at 6:33 pm

Yep I got mad after automatically retweeting a tweet of his only to click the link and found his creed against Pres Obama on his website. I told him I regretted retweeting reading the link. Then promptly took him off my TJ

      Excellent Comment zizi.

Many of these bloggers, limousine liberals, cable TV pundits are themselves part of or trying to gain entry into the 1%. They serve the EXACT same interests of the Republican party despite pretenses otherwises – line their personal pockets with as much money as possible, everything else be damned.

And as you said, the race factor is alive and well. When Ezra Klein refers to PBO’s presser as “kinda jerky” you can imagine what he’s actually thinking but can’t say.

It not only sickens me, but it infuriates me to no end…

I live in the San Francisco/Bay area and last night I’m coming home from mass and turn on the radio and it’s this guy Karel…

Some call him liberal/progressive, I think of him as a slimy, twisted, racist opportunist…but he is indeed very much a diehard PUMA…

He’s just so besides himself about Hillary being admitted and goes on to say how she must recover fully because she has to run for president and win in 2016 to ‘show President Obama how it’s done’…He then goes on about how President Obama has failed at everything and his ‘many expensive and unnecessary wars’ at ‘the expense of poor Americans who continue to suffer at President Obama’s hands’..

He fields a call from some guy I suspect is a Ron Paul/libertarian who reminds him of Hillary’s hawkish reputation, war votes as Senator, push for war with Iran and tacit support for the NRA as Senator…

Karel flips out, oh that’s just because she’s a great politician, that’s what she has to do…

But shortly after that, he again begins to rant about the NRA and how President Obama has refused to do anything even as he ‘sits idly by and lets people die’…He then declares President Obama a ‘prostitute’…

It is these harmful voices in the media singing for *their* supper to the detriment of *our* democracy, that will be the undoing of our country…

I called the show and told the lady screening the calls that Karel does himself and Hillary Clinton no favors with his blatant disrespect of President Obama while talking up Hillary…

This sort of rhetoric only engenders fury, deep resentment and works against his preferred candidate for 2016…and no, playing music by black artistes, gushing about and taking up for random black celebrities and causes, do not distract from the glaring disrespect of President Obama…

There won’t be a Barack Obama on the ballot in 2016 to help rally racists for the cause…

I know that he is very good friends with Gavin Newsom …and I know that someone has to know how much this hurts Democrats and know to seriously nip this stuff in the bud or else…

I followed up with an e-mail to which he responded with the expected amount of defensiveness and precious little else…

They think it is OK to be vile and nasty and disrespectful to president Obama because they wear the Liberal moniker. Some of their nastiness is no different than the GOP/TeaParty they often have the gall to chastise. I saw that at DKos done religiously, a main reason why I left and have have never been back. But again, you are right, it is not just DailyKos. Many of these people who can’t hold a candle to this president feel the need to disrespect him. I don’t have problems with criticism, but the tone and like you point out their disrespect for him is galling, truly.

I’m noticing that MSNBC is increasingly like that. Now since the election they’ve surpassed FOX in relevancy, and they seem to think it gives them a carte blanche to disrespect this President and their entire morning programming (on any given day) is unambiguously anti-Obama, and neutral towards or pro-GOP.

Great comment, Zizi! I am so sick of these spoiled so called progressives. These people do not have to worry about food and shelter. I bet you none of these holier than thou critics of the President are out of jobs and have to rely on the meagre unemployment compensation to stay afloat. Without a deal, millions of Americans will not receive unemployment benefits, starting today. I used to respect PM Carpenter but something happened to him after President Obama won re-election. He seems to have decided to join the emoprogs. In any case, I am sick of all the people you listed who think they know better than President Obama.

GM from down under everyone – seems while I was sleeping it was shown yet again that they GOP likes to dish it out but can’t take it – everyone said option C was to cry – seems that they got there.

So, the Republicans are now demanding that in order to pay for the Medicare Doc Fix, where Doctors get paid more for medicate services, through cuts to obamacare. Got that?
Oh, and did I mention, that democrats are fighting for Doctirs getting higher pay, and that is a Republican constituency?
Look into my eyes, deeper, deeper, you are now a wackjob Republican, now wake up!

Happy New Year – good health to TOD in 2013. Hang in there – our President has got this. It’s a confusing day and I do not plan to freak out – I will wait until I hear what’ happening from PBO. I think he has handled this brilliantly. Screw the emoprogs, GOPers and anyone who does not support PBO wholeheartedly through these negotiations. Turn off the pundits, listen to those we’ve always known make sense (Steve Benen) and let’s hold hands while we get through this. Keep dancing – we’ve done a lot of work in 2012 and need a little celebration with our loved ones tonight.
