I can’t believe these idiots in congress and the republicans! This is pure insanity. First they manage their bullshit with pulling PBO away from his family and vacation with his family. It doesn’t stop there, they want to take it to the strike of midnight. What a crock of f’n bullshit.

This should bring a smile to everyone’s face from Politico:

Democrats win key tax fights in emerging fiscal cliff deal

The package being negotiated by Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and Vice President Joe Biden amounts to a defeat for the GOP on multiple fronts. It not only raises tax rates, but also extends stimulus-era tax policy, prolongs emergency unemployment benefits, maintains targeted tax breaks derided by the party as corporate handouts and revives limits on deductions for the wealthy that have been dormant for almost a decade β€” all policies that the GOP has fought. It’s expected to raise $600 billion over 10 years.

Above all, the emerging deal would shatter 20 years of Republican orthodoxy on taxes, undercutting a core part of the party identity that had been built around giving no quarter to any tax increase β€” ever.

So to start the new year with a new joke or to end the old year with an old joke.

The pert and pretty nurse took her troubles to a resident psychiatrist in the hospital where she worked. “Doctor, you must help me”, she pleaded. “It’s gotten so that every time I date one of the young doctors here, I end up dating him. And then afterward, I feel guilty and depressed for a week.”

“I see”, nodded the psychiatrist. “And you, no doubt, want me to strengthen your will power and resolve in this matter”.

“No!” exclaimed the nurse. “I want you to fix it so I won’t feel guilty and depressed afterward!”

Question: so I thought the outrage was over cuts of SS/Medicare, but I don’t see those cuts. So that has been completely forgotten over the $400K bit?

Reports saying that Pelosi and Reid both signed off on the Biden deal. So how soon before the Pelosi sell out memes start. Shouldn’t Pelosi WANT to kill the bill if it’s as bad as has been reported?

To our President, our VPOTUS, keep it going. I am trusting in our president. He is a man of his word and he is one who does not have to be in the limelight to kick behinds for that which he strongly believes in. POB believes in helping the middle class. VPBiden believes in the middle class, and what a face to put on all of this for ‘the peoples’ face.’

We have two men who fight for us all the way. POTUS served up the meal first by having the people who he and VPBiden fought so hard for during this campaign, and who did he surround himself with this afternoon, ‘the people.’

I love our president for standing up for his core. President and VP Biden have a great New Year because we are with you. Harry has a smile on his face.

Chips, you give us so much to be so grateful for on this site, and I want to ((((((((With Much Love))))))) You and all of my TOD Family for making this a joy in my life. We worked hard to be able to say to each other all over the world here within our family, “A Beautiful Blessed New Year.”

Let us enjoy our Chips and give thanksgiving for all of the beautiful and difficult work of keeping this beautiful have free of the crap. I love all that you do for me daily, Chips. You bring so much joy to my life on this site. Now we pray and think good thoughts for a great vote. Put out within your space, good thoughts. Our POTUS and VPOTUS need us. We worked too hard to let up now. Now enjoy your celebrations, those of you all over the world. I love you all. Still give Nancy and Harry a big hug as well. We have a gem in our president, and let us continue to move FORWARD.HZ

Dudette, out of respect for you, and the TOD family, I will also bite my tongue about the way I feel about these spoiled emoprogs who have absolutely no idea what it takes to govern a diverse country. For heavens sake, the United States is not exactly a replica of Bernie Sanders’ tiny state of Vermont! If the emoprogs were really serious they would be spending all their money, time and energy organizing and mobilizing voters to make sure that we elect far left progressive super majorities to Congress. The last time I checked the vast majority of members of Congress, including Democrats, were not far left progressives. Given that reality, how in the world do the purity progressives expect the President and Democrats to govern if they are not willing to compromise? The purity progressives offered a candidate, Ralph Nader in 2000, and 2004! The best he could was about 4% in some states. Until the purity progressives are able to elect a holier than thou Progressive President, and a holier than thou majority members of Congress (Something that’s never happened in the 223 years of American presidency), they need to STFU!

btw, what the hell is an emoprog? I haven’t figured that out yet. Every time I see that word, I wonder if they are people I should know and if so, why. I mean, who appoints them emoprogs and why are they important? It took me too long to figure it out so I just keep dancing.

        • December 31, 2012 at 10:19 pm

“Who is an emoprog?” I’ll take a swing at that. For me, an emoprog is a “progressive” leaning person
[a human being, we might remember] whose
got a weak gizzard about things as they come up, and they start hollering “fire, “fire” if somebody strikes a match
and they tend contribute to the nervous energetic chaos of things, emotionally, and then actually.
I think of an emoprog as somebody who would do well to keep their mouth shut until they have read some history
and gotten some perspective and matured in their emotional behavior.

Donna, I love the song! I am also with you about the “emoprogs.” They are nothing but paper tigers. They are, of course, emboldened by our corrupt media that gives them a platform to attack the President while pretending to be his supporters. I don’t think the President pays them much attention. And I think you are absolutely right that we should stop giving them too much attention, which implies that they are so important. There is absolutely no evidence that the loudmouths emoprogs contributed anything to the re-election of President Obama. Genuine supporters (and I mean genuine supporters) of President Obama trust and respect him. Speaking for my self, there is absolutely no way I would ever rely on media rumors to make me believe that President Obama has betrayed us! Absolutely no way! By the way, that includes rumors spread by people like Ezra Klein and the other so called liberal/progressive pundits on MSNBC!

  48. December 31, 2012 at 9:58 pm

Sorta fascinating watching all the frenzy in the face of the reality that not one word has emerged from Boehner, Cantor, etc., as to whether they House will even vote, let alone have the votes to pass whatever the ‘deal’ is. And, of course, we don’t know if any Senator will filibuster the ‘deal’ – wouldn’t surprise me if one of several Rs as well as Sanders does just that.

For those of you already in a 2013 Time Zone – Happiest of New Years!!!

Bill, all I can say is AMEN to Ken’s twit! The holier than thou progressives believe that President Obama can dictate legislation to the teabag controlled House of Representatives and a Senate where Republicans routinely use the filibuster to defeat almost everything associated with President Obama. Somebody please educate me why we are led to believe that the holier than thou progressives are smarter than the tea baggers! Surely, these smart, holier than thou, progressives must know the complexity of governing in a system which is based on the doctrines of “Separation of Powers,” and “Checks and Balances.” Most so called smart progressives resort to mythology when attacking President Obama. They some how suggest that President Obama, like FDR and LBJ, could use the dictatorial powers of the president to force Congress to enact laws they favor. In attacking President Obama for not using the so called “bully pulpit” to force Congress to enact policies they favor, they conveniently leave out the fact that both FDR and LBJ dealt with Congresses controlled by Democrats.

To Chips and all the TOD family – Happy New Year!
I haven’t been able to participate in a while due to computer problems. But now the old monster is fixed or so I hope.
I am looking forward to the New Year and the years following. As long as Barack Obama is our President, I will always remain confident and optimistic.
We have a lot of work to do, but if we just remain vigilant and actively participate in government, we will steer the ship of state in the right direction.
My special wish for 2013 is that we will see extremism diminished, that we will experience a new sense of cooperation and reason.
To all of you – my thanks for all you do to build our community, to support our President and to share your ideas.

A very happy new year, Chips and TOD family. I’m doing something entirely new this NYE — writing this in a very pleasant hotel room at Ruby’s Inn just outside of Bryce Canyon National Park, one of the most magical of the many magical parks in Utah. (Here’s a great winter pic: http://travel.nationalgeographic.com/travel/national-parks/bryce-canyon-national-park/) We’ve been roaming the west in an RV for the past year and a half, but left it to get some work done and drove to Denver for Christmas with my sister. I don’t think there’s been a month since my sister moved there that she hasn’t mentioned snow, so I assumed I could get some cross country skiing in before we head for the Anza Borrego desert for the winter. But no! So on the way back we stopped here, where they have just enough snow, and a lovely trail to the rim of the canyon. This is the first time I’ve cross country skied in several years, and I took a wrong turn and ended up going for 7 miles, so I don’t expect to have a working muscle by morning. But it was great! And if I can still stand I’ll do it again tomorrow.

Thank you all for a wonderful year of information, laughs, links, encouragement, analysis, and fun. Chips, you are a phenomenon. Bless your beautiful energy.

Sounds fabulous betseyc! Long ago, when I still skied, my dream was to start in the Northern Canadian Rockies, hire an RV, and ski every area all the way down to New Mexico following the transcontinental divide, then drive on down to the beach for a swim! Hey, maybe I will still get to do that one day! If I ever retire! Happy 2013! πŸ™‚

Oh Betseyc, you are in one of my most favorite national parks. My husbands family lives in Phoenix so every year, sometimes several times a year we would drive to Phoenix. Many times we would stop at one of the parks in the area just to enjoy the views. Have a wonderful safe time.

This may be harsh, but I strongly believe that any journalist/reporter that has worked for Faux News, should not be hired by other mainstream media as visible journalist or reporters, that includes Major Garrett.

            December 31, 2012 at 11:56 pm

totally agree with that. it’s very easy to make an evidence-based case showing that faux snooze is not a journalistic operation, and clearly a propaganda machine for a specific ideology. they should be booted from the white house press corps immediately too. it would also be nice if so many obama supporters wouldn’t fall into the trap each time one of the faux-people says something that seems sort of reasonable every once and while, and say, “shepard smith doesn’t seem so bad” or whatever, and remember that these faux-people are literally the scum of the earth. they gleefully cheerlead america into unnecessary wars killing hundreds of millions of innocent people, and still promote these kind of policies today. shepard smith for instance is one of the only people who has been with faux snooze since the first day. anyone who takes a paycheck from faux should be blacklisted from any journalistic job for eternity!!!

    • December 31, 2012 at 11:10 pm

This time he has even left his ardent supporters flummoxed, including David Corn. Why are we the only ones who get it? Are we so drunk on the koolaid? as a practical person I always like to bag my victories. There was never any guarantee that the House would have come after Fiscal Cliff to restore the middle Class tax cuts ONLY. The emoprogs forget that any deal would have to go through the House. PBO knows that so he’s taking his winnings NOW off the table while he can still save the unemployed and maintain Child tax credits, Education credits stimulus for energy. That is hard stuff compared to the mirage of an ideological win that leaves the vulnerable with an empty bag and a raving mad House prancing about. See how he took advantage of Boehner’s AWOL to get stuff done.

Norquist has got nothing tonight and his stranglehold has been quashed. Kornacki & PL can squeal all they want, but they are not the ones in the unemployment insurance line

      • 245 anniebella

            January 1, 2013 at 2:57 am

Anniebella, Kornacki, like Ezra Klein, “is getting a damn good check” for appearing to sound intelligent as a progressive liberal. But neither Kornacki nor Klein have an idea what it means, in practical reality, to be without a job and without the meagre unemployment compensation. In my humble opinion, they are what my grandmother called educated fools!

        • 248 nathkatun7
          January 1, 2013 at 2:49 am

That’s it in a nut shell, Aniebella! The holier than thou progressives probably have six figure incomes. They certainly are not facing the trauma of having zero income once the UI payments terminate;nor are they worried of having to pay $2,000 in income taxes that may make it difficult for them to to pay for food, shelter and auto expenses. For them, it’s all about ideology and not the practical reality that a President, with any decency, must always view as his number one goal.

I am one who has stayed at that site. During the run up to the election there were fewer occasions to have the President’s back. It seemed even the worst cynics kept their thoughts to themselves. Very different from 2010. Now I am back at the task of setting the record straight if I can. Only difference is I don’t bother to even enter into a “diary” discussion by certain writers at this point. I just grin when I see the author and the topic line and think how predictable they are.

I can finally write a comment after catching up on all of today’s other TOD posts. My oldest brother’s wife and their granddaughter dropped by for a surprise visit today, so I was not able to log on until late. I enjoyed their visit, but I don’t like having my day’s plans disrupted by “surprise” visits. Wish she had given me a heads up. Moving on. I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year and a blessed 2013. I’ve deliberately decided to ignore all of the wailing and gnashing of teeth coming from the left and the right. I always remind myself that no matter what deal is reached, there is always going to be someone who isn’t satisfied with it, and that these folks don’t have the very difficult job of having to negotiate with politicians who have zero interest in governing. Most of the complainers couldn’t do what PBO and VP Biden do. If it were left up to them, they would allow the country to go to hell as long as they were able to maintain their “purity.” Purity doesn’t solve problems, is not a good model for governing, and is incapable of moving the country FORWARD. I cast my lot with PBO a long time ago, and I knew there would be many difficulties when I signed on. I also know that nothing can be accomplished if I’m always ready to take my ball and go home when the going gets tough. Adults are willing to face and deal with adversity, whereas, those who are unable to deal with adversity act like kids and cry, suck their thumbs, and whine. Thank God PBO is in the former category, because that’s where I am and where I will stay. I refuse to allow the whiners and complainers on the left and the president’s “fair weather” supporters to depress me, and I adamantly refuse to provide support to his opponents by launching ad hominen attacks against him about this deal that the right can (and will) use as ammunition in the near future for their evil march toward turning our democracy into a corporatocracy.

The Senate will vote on legislation to extend tax rates on annual income under $450,000 on New Year’s Eve.Β

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said the vote would be held after a Congressional Budget Office score was received on the bill, which would prevent looming tax hikes on most households and put off for two months spending cuts scheduled by the sequester.Β

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) predicted a strong Democratic vote behind the deal negotiated by Vice President Biden and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), while Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) predicted the vote would be held before midnight.Β

The House could vote as soon as Tuesday on the bill, though it is uncertain whether it would draw significant GOP support.Β

Ya know, the biggest problem with these commentators/”analysts” is they have no actual experience in anything other than criticizing what someone else does. I spent my career negotiating mult-million dollar settlement agreements and negotiation implies give and take. There were other issues at stake. I always believed the $250 would go up simply because of small business owners but PBO was smart enough to set it lower than where he wanted to end up. Further, from the beginning one of his major concerns was the expiration of UI benefits. Do these idiots believe that the GOP was simply going to “give” those to the Dems along with all of the other stimulus tax credits that PBO wanted to continue? And that he got in this deal? From my perspective, what PBO got here is exactly what he wanted for a short term fix. Of course, he would have preferred a grand bargain but that was not going to happen. The outstanding issue is the House. Given the weakness of Boehner’s leadership, I am not convinced this will make it through the House. Personally, from my perspective this is a huge win for PBO. And believe me, he could care less if McConnell wanted to negotiate with Biden as long as he got what he wanted. He is very results oriented. A great way to start 2013!!!!

Happy New Year east coasters!!!! Trying my best to stay awake long enough to celebrate my own New Year rising. It’s not looking good though, cause the eyelids are mighty heavy right about now. It has to be all that dancing I did today. So with much aplomb, pomp, and circumstance, I bid you all a fond goodnight. May each day of 2013 be better than your best day of 2012.

β€”Other tax changes: Extends for five years Obama-sought expansions of the child tax credit, earned income tax credit, and an up to $2,500 tax credit for college tuition. Also extends for one year accelerated “bonus” depreciation of business investments in new property and equipment, a tax credit for research and development costs and a tax credit for renewable energy such as wind-generated electricity.

β€”Unemployment benefits: Extends jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed for one year.

β€”Cuts in Medicare reimbursements to doctors: Blocks a 27 percent cut in Medicare payments to doctors for one year. The cut is the product of an obsolete 1997 budget formula.

β€”Social Security payroll tax cut: Allows a 2 percentage point cut in the payroll tax first enacted two years ago to lapse, which restores the payroll tax to 6.2 percent.

β€”Across-the-board cuts: Delays for two months $109 billion worth of across-the-board spending cuts set to start striking the Pentagon and domestic agencies this week. Cost of $24 billion is divided between spending cuts and new revenues from rules changes on converting traditional individual retirement accounts into Roth IRAs.

Ed Schultz: “This Is A Big Win For The Democrats”

“The middle class tax cuts are protected, the big 3 (Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security) are protected, the wealthiest Americans are going to pay more”…..”To go from $250,000 to $400,000, Liberals need to realize that is a small move”

    Happy New Year dearest everyone!

      Happy New Year Edwina!!

As to Ed, his behavior is rather bizarre since the Senate hasn’t even voted (and we have no idea if they will) and then there’s the House and we’ve had zero response from Boehner or Cantor since this ‘deal’ began being revealed.

In any event, the one certainty is that President Obama knows exactly what he is doing and he is doing his best for all Americans.

Bob Wapo is reporting that in a memo released by House gop leaders they will allow a vote to go forward on the Senate bill and possibly put it up for amendment. No commitment to try to shepherd it through. My guess is Nancy will be working hard to get enough gopers to vote for it to pass but I am not optimistic. Thanks for all you do for PBO and those of us who support him. Happy New Year to you!

      • January 1, 2013 at 2:00 am

Thank you Foxfire!!! The next 24 h are going to be very interesting. My hope is that Leader Pelosi will be able to convince at least 7 Rs elected to serve in the 113th to flip – that would be the most effective way to blunt the damage of the GOP because then Senator Reid and colleagues would have even more reason to adjust the Senate rules on Filibuster, substantially. We’ll see – we certainly don’t have long to wait because these next three days will spell much of what we can expect until we capture the House and expand Ds in the Senate in the 2014 mid-terms.

Happy New Year to you and your loved ones!

Happy new year TOD village. Yes we are living in interesting times, no? I am in b’klyn NY and just got back from fireworks in prospect park with a couple of my brothers and their significant others. I love fireworks. Crowd was in good spirits. They had live entertainment and as midnight approached car horns and noise makers started going off almost in unison with the fireworks. What fun. Now back at sis house and coming down with glass of wine and guacamole.

Just had to stop by and wish everyone a great year ahead and while I’m not the praying type my prayer for the new year is that ChipsChica find the strength and determination to keep the little oasis functioning. It’s clearly THE place to be. My Obots family stayed in the know the last few days really the republican cliff by visiting here. So a big thanks from all here!

Thanks to everyone here for your companionship on the roller coaster that was 2012. You advanced my education in politics, music, and bad jokes (bad, in a good way!). I found support and comfort here. I spent the evening with two very good and devoted friends; first dinner and then my friend and I took out our spinning wheels and spun our way to the new year. Now I’m home on the couch and my cat has fallen asleep purring with her head on my hand (typing is a bit slow…). She also especially dear to me after losing my dog after 14 tears of faithful companionship. I am so grateful for friends old and new, furry an d not-so-furry, virtual and IRL. POTUS: Neither side got all they wanted. “Agreement is the right thing to do for our country and the House should pass it without delay” Obama argues in stmt that the deal sets precedent for further deficit reduction thru both cuts and “new revenues” “This agreement will also grow the economy and shrink our deficits in a balanced way.”

Pres. Obama’s statement on the fiscal cliff deal passed by the senate.

    Office of the Press Secretary
    January 1, 2013

    Statement from the President

Leaders from both parties in the Senate came together to reach an agreement that passed with overwhelming bipartisan support today that protects 98 percent of Americans and 97 percent of small business owners from a middle class tax hike. While neither Democrats nor Republicans got everything they wanted, this agreement is the right thing to do for our country and the House should pass it without delay.

This agreement will also grow the economy and shrink our deficits in a balanced way – by investing in our middle class, and by asking the wealthy to pay a little more.

What’s more, today’s agreement builds on previous efforts to reduce our deficits. Last year, I worked with Democrats and Republicans to cut spending by more than $1 trillion. Tonight’s agreement does even more by asking millionaires and billionaires to begin to pay their fair share for the first time in twenty years. As promised, that increase will be immediate, and it will be permanent.

There’s more work to do to reduce our deficits, and I’m willing to do it. But tonight’s agreement ensures that, going forward, we will continue to reduce the deficit through a combination of new spending cuts and new revenues from the wealthiest Americans. And as we address our ongoing fiscal challenges, I will continue to fight every day on behalf of the middle class and all those fighting to get into the middle class to forge an economy that grows from the middle out, not from the top down.
